How to Measure and Cut Crown Molding (Even the Crazy Angles)

[Music] I'm gonna be really quick here because my baby's crying in the other room but I just wanted to show you how I use one of these contractor protractor things for measuring angles for mitered corners for example I have this really weird outside corner right behind me you can see and if I measure it you're gonna see it's a 132 132 degrees but just really random but I'm gonna show you how I would make crown molding for this corner okay so when I stick this in the corner here it's 130 almost two hundred thirty two inches kind of between 131 I mean 13 inches okay so here's how I measure it 180 degrees minus 132 equals 48 divided by 2 is 24 so we're gonna make two outside cuts of 24 degrees the crown molding we're gonna pretend the wall is here so the top needs to be longer than the bottom now I really should have a really sharp pencil but I don't have one and this is just scrap it anyway so it doesn't matter but the angles gonna kind of come like that on the side and like this on this side what 24 degrees okay just kind of make a little light Marky doesn't matter because you're gonna just saw over it anyway okay so you've got your pieces marked next thing you want to do is you want to take your crown we had these two pieces like this so this kind of crown molding actually doesn't have a bottom profile and a top profile it just has the same profile on both sides but let's pretend you have the very generic builder-grade crown molding and this was your bottom and this was your top you're gonna want to flip it up and over and now your angle goes like this you're going to want to change - off to 20 23 24 and now you're ready to make your cut so you want this flush with the top top profile flush with the base [Music] [Music] once up this side we're gonna flip it upside down wash replicating the spring angle of the wall [Music] this comes together perfectly here let's see how it looks today have it 24 degrees outside for perfect fit thanks to my protractor and this is Aaron it touched off the MRI standing out over and out [Music]
