i've got some new lights for the video um i thought without my game you know especially this one look at this [Music] this episode has been brought to you by poundland they haven't actually sponsored me but uh i did buy a lot of stuff there this week hello welcome to bill making stuff episode 17. today i felt like making a bit of terrain i haven't made some terrain in a while i think i've only made one video about a piece of terrain and it's just up here convenient it's convenient isn't it yeah i haven't really got much to say for this intro i'm gonna make a piece of terrain i'm gonna be using magnets and uh yeah should probably add a joke in here uh let me think so my two-year-old son told me a joke the other day i assume it's a joke he said uh daddy what's brown and sticky now in my head i've heard this joke you know it's a stick a stick is brown and sticky so i said i don't know what's brown and sticky son the pooh my nappy change it useless father it's two years old [Music] hello everyone and welcome to bill making stuff episode 17 how is everyone doing stop it bill you're not a nice person so this truck called out to me in poundland and uh i thought you know i have to make this into a piece of terrain so that's what we're gonna do uh [Music] so to make my apocalyptic most probably rusty bit of uh terrain without this truck i'm gonna want to cut it in half and uh remember when i said i didn't have a dremel and then i said i lied i did well that was kind of a lie too i don't have a dremel dremel is a brand i have a cheap rotary tool which is embarrassingly cheap and we'll probably barely cut through this thing but you know let's give it a go look at that it's like one of my son's toys roto craft [Music] so five weeks later and we're through so i'm just moving it around seeing what looks good so i don't really tend to base my terrain um but i think i will for this and i'm going to use these uh vinyl floor tiles out in the tiles wow and you know i saw this i think i might have seen this in 52 miniatures use the vinyl floor tile as a base and it doesn't warp with glue so it's quite good plus it's got a sticky bit underneath i don't know if that's useful or not i don't know if this tile is going to work as a basic material but it's pretty easy to cut and it's cheap and you know i don't think the glue is going to whoop it at all i don't think so but we'll give it a go plus you can cut it with scissors which is good sorry everyone i've got these new lights that don't seem to want to stand up um but you know things happen i'm sure nothing else can go wrong so i think the setting is going to be you know my kind of scrap planet the grim dark future everything's rusty broken and i don't think vehicles would have wheels left on them do you [Music] i'll probably just scatter these on the base at some point so the reason why i make apocalyptic terrain and the reason why it's fun is because you just get to mess things up you just smash it you know melt it cut it bash it you know warp it like this and stick a knitting needle into it to make dents with fun [Music] so there's a set of doors on the back and did they open i mean it feels like this oh they do they open look at that instant production value see these uh doors look like they've been pried open adds a bit of narrative looks like you know people have been in there looking for supplies i should probably mess you up now should i here we go knit a needle inside uh you know oh sorry what was that did something just fall off oh sorry let me just melt this and then stick something in there [Music] so what i normally tend to forget to do is to position my little 28mm guy in places you know make sure there's enough room for him to slip through there you know walk through there or stand up there like a i want a big hole in the side of this truck um but i want to make it look like it's melted so uh yeah that's actually how it was sold on amazon as useless foam cutter so i want to make some bullet holes all over this thing um because there would be especially a lot of bullet holes around the o because i imagine people would use that as target practice i think this base is a bit too big it's taking up too much space so i want to cut it down a bit you know to be honest does it even need to be attached am i am i that stupid i could just uh yeah i mean that makes more sense right having it a bit modular i can move it around i don't think sometimes [Music] so it's springtime uh the flowers are out the bumblebees are out and uh i took my son for a walk and a big big fat bumblebee flew over to us and uh he started to panic you know oh it's gonna sting me he's gonna sting me and i'm like it's not going to sting your son you know bumblebees just do a job you know they're not they're not out to hurt anyone i put his mind at ease and um in my mind all i could think was yeah but what about if that bumblebee is mental you know he's the mental one in the hive i picked him up when i left so talking to modular i kind of want to have some accessories with this terrain i want to create like bridges and fence panels and things like that but i need them to be level so i'm going to raise the back of this truck with some xps foam bricks i feel i should warn you there are several time lapses in this video nothing could be done [Music] so before we get to all that modular fun i want to do the base and i want to use some polyfilling or speckle from americans out there the best speckle tool of them all now i don't usually have things like this but i found some barrels and i'm just going to stick them in now i feel like a little bit of a cheat like i didn't scratch build these barrels but then again i didn't scratch build this truck so uh whatever so i've been talking about my son a lot this episode uh not so much about the build well because you know show don't tell i don't need to talk about what i'm doing you can see it you know i've also been speaking to a lot of people on instagram on youtube and there seems to be a lot of dead crafters out there and i'm thinking should there be a group for daddy crafters maybe not quite a daddy crafters you know crafters who are deads so i thought i should make like a facebook page or a discord group you know you know if only just to prove that we've had sex at least once so as per the usual i sprayed the model black and then gray from above this is some mod podge with a brown acrylic paint i'm going to use it to seal in all this speckle uh just add a bit more strength i should have probably done it before i sprayed it but uh whatever i want that brown color [Music] and some rusty color paint for my rusty on the coat i mean you knew you knew it was coming right you knew there was gonna be rust how could i not make this rusty so here's a lighter rust color um i'm running out of this stuff i need to get some more and a sponge on a stick for when you know you need to sponge stuff from a distance [Music] [Music] so i don't know if you saw the last episode about my rust technique she probably didn't he didn't do very well but um i used some brown mod podge rusty cutter paint and some baking powder to make my rusty textured paint it's fun you should try it i'll put a link up here for the video uh if you didn't see it already and you know who you are so this textured paint you know it dries very quickly for some reason i think it's something to do with the baking powder it makes everything dry quickly but uh yeah get it in there get it everywhere you can always paint over it [Music] so [Music] that was a pretty bad spill i woke my son up um effingham blind him but uh you know he's back to sleep now and i'm calm time to dry brush now look at all that lovely texture dry brush so in last week's video i did the all of the above method for rust and i'm gonna do that this time it's the uh basically use every method i know and uh combine it starting with masking fluid [Music] i don't know why i own this little sponge on a stick i don't know so word of warning this stuff is latex if you have a latex allergy like your dad then you should wear protection unlike your dad i know i made that joke last week but no i watched last week so i couldn't resist also less is more don't put on too much latex like your mum that wasn't in last week's that's an extra one for you once it's dry you can paint over it with some of the green or just i think it's green yes green so stipple the paint on um because that you know you don't get the brush strokes and also stipple to the edges but not over the edges it makes it look a bit rustier that way and i did pop masking fluid over the edges which was a bit of a waste um i never did say i was good at thinking and doing things today so this is a kids toothbrush i'm going to use this to wipe away the paint on top of the masking fluid and expose what's underneath this is one of the most satisfying stages in the build it's like when you were at school and you used to take all the pva glue paint your hands and uh spend ages pinning it off it's like that you keep peeling until it exposes all the rust underneath and the kid next to you in class would be like hey bill you got rusty hands i'm like i know john i know shut up john just me no no one else really so this is my homemade brown wash it's oil paint i think it's burnt umber oil paint mixed with white spirit or mineral spirits for you americans and it's the best wash in the world [Music] then use a paper towel to wipe off the excess okay everyone stand back bill is about to do some detail work with a fine brush and i'm going to do rusty drips from these bullet holes um yeah i don't normally do detail work like this and i know why because at the end you don't even see it [Music] and here is my homemade pigment powder rust colored this was in last week's video i'll put a link up here again uh and this is the final stage in my all of the above rusting technique which is just basically everything i told you you wouldn't see those details make sure you brush off all the excess otherwise you end up with cheesy what's it fingers whenever you handle this thing and this is the darker pigment powder it's a brown i'm going to use it for the darker rust at the bottom you guys missed so much last week and that's it that's the final stage of my rusting technique the all of the above look at that you can't get much rustier than that [Music] so i was talking to my friend the other day and he's like bill you know how are you doing on patreon and things like that i'm like i'm doing good i've got some good patrons on there but uh and he was like do you want more i'm like yeah of course who doesn't want more patrons you know um and he said you should probably talk about it more on your your uh your show and like no it's not really my thing you know talking about patreon you know i don't like to mention the links down there and you can click it's not really my thing and he's like what about you know your amazon prime wish list thing you know you can click on it you can buy things for the channel like no that's it's a bit tacky you know i don't i don't want to talk about that you know uh wait and then he said will you at least ask people to subscribe and like and comment i'm like they know to subscribe if they like the show i don't need to tell them i'm like look mate it's just not my style all right and you just stay there and watch teddy tubbies okay i love your breakfast really soon so i'm going to flock the base of my model and i don't usually use bases which means i don't usually flock but um i have this big sherbet lemon tub full of sharp sand and it's like build builder sand with stones and bits of grit in there and i i figured it might make a good base i can always paint it later and add more i might actually come back to it in another video and base all of my models and terrain with the same stuff you know and maybe you might add some flock and some bushes and you know whatever you're rambling shut up so i have to be really generous with the uh pva glue get it everywhere as thick as possible and this is the fun bit you just sprinkle the flock on the glue it's like when you used to sprinkle glitter on glue when you was a kid unlike when john would sprinkle glitter over my glowy hands and i'd be like leave me alone john i don't like you john why'd you why am i even sitting next to you john save with the excess pour it back into your sherbet lemon tub or you know whatever type you have so we want to seal this uh sand in we don't want it to come off every time you take it off the shelf uh so we're gonna use some water down pva glue or mod podge and just basically soak the whole thing in it with a pipette so this would be a good test for the vinyl bases to see if they warp you couldn't get much more soaked in glue than this so you can leave this to dry overnight and you can sit there and watch it uh some i usually do as a treat but today i think i'm gonna move on to phase two of the build which is a modular fences and bridges um and i'm gonna try this technique this is a bit of bill thinking for you so i want some uh old wood that's been painted and it's cracked and i figured you know if pva glue stretches and warps card and wood then would it stretch and warp the paint oh it's a stick up [Applause] sorry as i'm saying uh yeah if i use a lot of pva glue let it dry a little bit and then paint over the top will it warp and crack the paint this is a just a little experiment so i didn't wait for the glue to be completely dry like me i waited for it to be just a bit tacky like most other youtube channels and then i painted over the top of it and uh oh look at that it's already working there [Music] and it's actually worked on this one not the other one um but look at that that looks pretty good to me we can make it look better so i'm really happy with that look i mean things don't usually work it's strange when it does this one not so much that one can just uh you can have that but this so i was on a roll i had another idea i thought you know maybe i could uh try some other kind of weathering technique for this and i'm just gonna basically paint a layer of acrylic paint and then burn it with the uh the heat gun just heat up so much that it bubbles and burns and you'll see and look at that i've walked my cutting mat with the heat gun on the paint i could see bubbles appearing i've brushed off the excess there and uh washed it and look at that that looks like some old painted wood i'm quite happy with that i thought i'd try another one you know it didn't really work as well but i think i quite enjoy melting things is there a word for that so along with this painted wood i'm going to use these old rusty sheets of metal that i made in my last video i'm sick of them sitting there judging me for making such a poorly received video so i'm going to cut them up so i needed some wood as a structure and i got these cotton candy sticks now i already had these cotton candy sticks because i am an avid lover of cotton candy and sticks and i beveled the corners and chipped it and made them look weathered so i received the package today and it contained these snips that were bought for me by reinvented modeler he bought them off my amazon wishlist down below thank you very much i have no idea what the original modeler was like but the reinvented modeler is a very nice guy thank you so i use a wire brush and a little mini stanley blade that's my sons by the way to weather and bevel these little wooden stirrers to turn into wooden planks i don't know about you but i hate painting individual planks and sticks and little bits and pieces so what i do is i just fill a tub up with wash or paint and i just chuck everything in the tub [Music] and here we go this is like apocalyptic lego let's just uh start putting this together that yes that is a glue gun so the trick here is to be as kind of random as possible like all these pieces have been salvaged like hey look hey look bob i've got this bit of rusty metal can you add this to the fence all right then i'll stick it right here what magic is this what is this sorcery what oh magnets so they're just magnets so i should probably measure these uh you know the spacings of the uh the magnets and stuff but i don't really i'm just gonna kind of eyeball it you know you know me so i was looking for my pin vice drill and i couldn't find it and uh i guess i just have to use a drawing pin instead it did the trick and i'm gonna use some of these dressmaker pins oh sorry professional dress maker pins uh to fill the holes and add little bits of metal here and there for the magnets to stick to that's how magnets work [Music] you know it's hard to tell on camera but it actually sticks there but let's give this a little test run with my little more on here is that fun so bill did thinking again and i've been thinking lots and i thought you know i had more metal and i can start putting these bridges as barricades or fences and you know there's somewhere for my little guy to stand behind and shoot pew pew pew pew pew pew so let's turn those uh silvery pinheads into little rusty bolt heads so after i made this one bridge i thought i'd make another one and uh you know another one and another one and i'll probably make more in the future but four would do for now and a few more pinheads and i could have some fun [Music] so here it is here's the one here it is and here it is and uh you know here are the other bits but um yeah i'm you know i'm really happy with this this is a nice bit of terrain it gives me it's a perfect excuse for me to rust something the wood cracking effect i was quite proud of that maybe you should uh try that let me know it's been quite a long video but hopefully you've got something out of it um now i have to go and watch something called star wars it's for next week's video i have no idea what it is or why but episode one i mean obviously you should start from the beginning right so that's it for this week i hopefully see you next week um something big next week you glamour shots as per usual a big big big thank you to my patrons um if there's anything i can do to make your lives better let me know [Music] look at that that was a quite a long episode never made an episode this long and if you stuck around to the end thank you very much i mean it's going to end any time now anyway you
