*High-five* Top o' the mornin' to you laddies! @TimTheNerdTV on twitter My name is JackSepticEye, and welcome to Game Dev Tycoon. Now, I've never played this game before myself but I've heard a lot about it in the years that it's been out and I've heard really really great things about it. Everybody said they got addicted to it when it came out but I've just never got around to playing it. Now, I've been playing Tube Tycoon a lot recently, well, I kinda finished playing that by now. So I thought I'd try another Tycoon game that people have been saying really good things about. There's another one... I can't remember the other really good Tycoon people were talking about. Umm.. It's something, It's like a movie Tycoon game I think, but not this one. So, I want to try this because I feel like it speaks to me. Speaks to me as a guy who like to play games. Umm, okay so we have to make a company. Company name and player name Also, If you know how to play this game, and how to cheese this game, and how to get the most out of this game. Please bear with me, because I have never played it before. I don't even know how to play it. So, I might, I might be terrible at it, but... Company name: Ooh, that's a good question! Umm.. 'Butts & Stuff' And my player name: 'Jackaboy' There we go! And I are a male. What do I look like? What do I loo- There we go! That's me. You know when I woke up When I said: "Hey, what do I look like?" That's me right there! Doesn't look anything like me! [laugh] "Anchievement Unlocked: Supporter' Support a young startup Okay, so what do I do? I've gotten an achievement unlocked. Okay, cool. 'Develop New Game' So just happen anywhere? Okay, Let's develop a new game! 'Before devolpment can begin, you have to decide what kind of game you want to create, and give your game a name.' Game a name! That's what I call my game. "Game a name" Name a game! 'You can also select which graphic technology your should use.' 'Your options are initially limited, but once you have a bit of experience, you will be able to unlock new options.' Ookay. Ooh, we get to name our game! Uugh, god, I want to name it something funny but god I'm so dumb I can't think of anything. [Laugh] Uugh, aagh Fuck! What do I call it? Umm.. 'Mediev'- No, I was going to call it Medieval Pirates. Umm.. 'Butt sniffers' I don't know, leave me alone. I'm not, I'm not clever. 'Pick Topic' 'Ninja, Werewolf, Music or Vocabulary' Uugh, Mo'fuckin' Ninja! 'Action, Adventure, RPG' It's going to be an RPG!! A Ninja RPG, man, that'd be so cool! Aand, Ookay, Okay! So, Dev cost is 20 thousand for a G64, which sounds like... Is that like a commodore 64? Really?! God, those are old! I remember playin' on one of those! Umm, that's 20k with 56.1 so that's majority! But this is 4 times less with only 13% less. I'mma go with PC. Is that gonna dick me over? I feel like we have a strong market share, But we cost very little to make. Text based or 2D Graphics? I don't fuckin' know! We'll use better graphics On PC. 'Cause our development cost is less I don't fuckin' know. What am I doin'? Butt sniffers is up and runnin' 'Game development runs trough three stages.' 'At the beginning of each stage, you can decide what areas of the game you would like to focus on.' Yeah. So this is a lot of stuff like TubeTycoon, Where you have to, um, pick certain perks Or put your money into certain things, This is a LOT more fleshed out though. 'Picking the right focus for your game greatly increases the points you generate.' 'Think about what areas are important for your game, and decrease the focus on areas you think are less important.' 'If you want to read a brief description of the different areas'- Okay. I feel like I could, umm, do somethin' well with this. Okay, So, we're gonna have a lot of Story and a lot of Gameplay. And Engine can stay like that. Can I just put them all to full? [laugh] The Engine can stay a bit lower. Engine doesn't need to be absolutely extremely important But Story and, Story, quests and Gameplay need to be very important in an RPG. Cool! Okay, 'Game development has now started.' So I have bubbles going into different things. 'While developing your game you will generate game points which you can see bubbling up.' Lovely. 'Game points are devided into design points and technology points. The more points you generate the better the game will be.' Sorry there's a lot of readin' right now, but this is tutorials! 'From time to time there will also be bug points generated.' 'These points become less likely once you gain experience.' 'Bugs should be fixed before the game is released, and increase development time and cost. Okay, So when does our game get made? Okay, I'm gonna have to bring this down a small bit Because, umm, I can't see the entire screen right now, 'Cause my screen-, This game does not go into windowed mode properly. Umm, 'Development Stage 2!' Okay, things are just kickin' off already! Research 5 and Design 3. Okay, Umm, Level Design, Dialogues is very important in an RPG. Level Design and AI are not super important in an RPG, That, oh, I mean it's not an action RPG, I'm thinkin' more of like a 2D RPG. Somethin' like a Final Fantasy type of game. Although, yeah, that's 2D, right? Yeah. Now, I'm not thinkin' of somethin' like the Witcher, Because, that costs way too much to make. Umm, So maybe, ugh, 'cause Level Design I guess is important and AI kind of. I don't know. I don't know what I'm doing yet. I'm gonna figure it out. I'm gonna get better. 3 bugs. Is that bad? During development you can also select additional features for your game. Right now you can only pick basic sounds, but your options will increase quickly. Selecting additional features makes a game generally better but also increases cost. So, am I like in my garage now? I like how I have a DeLorean here. Am I in my garage making the game on my own? And then after a while I'll be able to like get a game studio You can also see the graphic type you selected when you defined the game This is just to remind you of your choice. You cannot change the type of graphics mid game. Oh, ok. So I only have basic sounds now. Are sounds usually important to an RPG? World design is and sound, I guess. 'Cause you need good dialogue. You need good dialogue and that, so. So there's a time allocation Ok. I don't know what I'm doing! I'm just gonna hope that I make the best game accidentally. I've 4 bugs, 5 bugs 6 bugs! Is that bad? 'The development of your first game is now complete.' That took no time at all! Made one game just like THAT But I am down a lot of money I'm down like, what? 28 thousand Jesus Um, 'The devolpment for your first game is now complete. You can press the finish button to publish your game, but you should only do that once you fix the majority of bugs.' Okay. 'Releasing a game without fixing bugs can severally affect your ratings, so you should only ever consider that if you need to cash in and can't afford to wait.' See, this was a thing Back in the old days- oh God, there's more bugs coming in Oh no, the bugs are disappearing. Nice! Bugs are gone! Yes. There we go, I'm gonna finish it. Finalise, finishing. Bugs were a thing, that when a game launched years ago Years and years ago, that you were stuck with them. A bad game was a bad game forever back then. You could create expansions for your game, but they basically just refined different things or added stuff And these days everyone's like "Oh, day one DLC, updates" all this kind of shit. It's important, because games back then, they were released and they had like A lot of bugs in them, but you couldn't fix them, you just had to work around them. Um I guess, people kind of spent a bit more time developing them though To make sure that those bugs didn't cripple the game and now people kind of rush them out and hope that they can fix them later, which is a shame Not everyone. The development of your game is now finished. While developing games, you gain experience and improve your skills... Yes. Plus one biceps. When development is completed, you will be presented with a summary of the experience you gained. I got nine and nine! I don't know what the fuck that means. So, are these the things that I'm good at now? Like, I'm better at dialogues, I'm better at world design, I'm better at gameplay... Those kinds of things. Cos I got more points for those, what else did I get... sound... Release game. I think this is going to be a great game. The ninja-RPG that is "Butt Sniffers." *Chuckles* The game is now complete and will be handed off to the publishing. We should see reviews and sales coming in for the game soon. Okay. This is also the game that, wasn't there like, if you pirated the game All the games you developed in the game did terribly. To like reflect that you, pirated the game? I- I think that was a thing I read. Game review: The first reviews for our newly released game, "Butt Sniffers", came in. Oh pl- Oh god please be good. Please let the steam reviews be good, or I can't handle life any more... Aw come on Star Games, "Not bad. Not good." RPG games work well on PC. Yes! Informed gamer, like game informer. "Waste of money": Game Hero. Game Hero... Go fuck yourself. My game is the best. "Uninspiring" - all games... Your review is uninspiring. For a first game, it's not that bad. For a guy, who literally just sat down and said "I don't know how to play this" and then I made a game... Not too bad. Not fucking great, but not too bad. After publishing a game you can invest a little bit of time to analyse your creation and generate a game report. Game reports are a great way to gain research points as well as valuable insights into what- works and what doesn't work when developing a game. This is going to get very confusing, I probably should have looked up uh... A how to, before I started the game. Ah, "To generate a game report, close this message and then click anywhere on the screen to bring up the action menu. Oh-kay, uh, generate game report. Units sold... why do I not have units sold? Oh, I have to generate the game report, I get it. "Butts & Stuff," a newcomer in the game industry has just released their first game, "Butt Sniffers." Maybe that stopped me. Butts & Stuff created Butt Sniffers. Maybe that wasn't the best naim- name for the game. The game had a moderate response from reviewers. We are curious how Butts & Stuff will deliver in the future. Bless my heart. Good God, I'm selling a lot. But my money should go back up right? Yeah! 14.5K in sales. Butt Sniffers sold 2,000 units in its first week on the market. I mean, it's no fucking Undertale. That game was a MONSTER when it came out. Still is a monster. Now that your game is on sale- I mean not compared to something like fucking GTA 5 But for an indie game. For a, like a self made game. Now that your game's on sale, you'll receive the income from your game every week. You can now- you can see how well your game is doing by looking at the sales graph at the top right of the screen. This is cool! Aw, I'm really digging this- God, I'm moving my microphone. Hopefully that's still recording, is it? Yes, I can see it. Our post release analysis of Butt Sniffers is complete and we got the following results: Ninja and RPG is an okay combination. Maybe, I should have picked something else for RPG. Story/Quests eems to be very important for this type of game. Yes! I told you. I know how RPG do. Now I'm back up to 49K Not in the black. Not in the re- What's the good one? Cos red and black are two bad colors when it sounds like, when it comes to numbers. In the red. Is a bad one, because black Friday is the good thing, right? I don't fucking know. Ah, okay So, it seems that Combinations of stuff are really important. That's really interesting. Game reports are a great way to gain more research points and new insights, it pays off to generate a report for each game you release. Now that you've copleted your first game report, it's a good idea to look at the research menu. To open the research menu close the- okay Research! There's a lot of fucking reading and talking right now *making sounds with mouth* Research is important to unlock new options and make better games. You should try to save enough research points to be able to create your ga- your own game engine This will greatly improve your games. Oh! So I'm not using a third-party like propi- proprietary engine I likely made this in RPG maker. Hint: Try to develop games with different topic and genre combinations for a slight research boost. Oh- -Kay Fifty RP? Okay, so I can't afford this yet? I can afford this, Okay. Wow! What can we put our money into? Ooh, Dungeon. Dungeon's gonna be good. Dungeon's gonna be very good. For a RPG. That's what I'm gonna be known as. Butts & Stuff is gonna be an RPG company I think. So we have 8K in monthly costs. And we have 5K in... weekly sales? Research complete. You have successfully researched a new topic: Dungeon. So now what can I do? Can I develop a new game already? I think I should- Ahh... A Wild west, dungeon, aliens, dance comedy... Comedy. Dungeon and comedy together. That's kind of what Undertale was. I'm just gonna replicate Undertale That's all I wanna do. Okay. So we- we're staying, we're staying well ahead We have 8K monthly costs. But our- our weekly sales seem to be pretty good. Um, okay Develop a new game. Okay, what's this one gonna be called? Actually, let's see what topic we're gonna have. Um... A dungeon... A dungeon RPG. Should I go for an RPG again? A dungeon adventure. Oh God, I don't know. A dungeon RPG, yeah Pick platform... PC again. And we're gonna call this one... Um... Pundertale! It's gonna be a- uh, humerous Uh Undertale. I don't know, comedy RPG? Dungeon RPG? Dungeon and RPG, I think would go better together. 2 Day- 2D graphics V1... 10K, can I afford this? Yes. Okay! Here we go. The new game is ready to go! Butt Sniffers is now off the market. It sold 5, 302 units generating... 37 thousand in sales. That's really good! For a- for a little game I made in my own room. While generating game reports you start to gain insights into the development process and learn about What works well and what doesn't work so well. Shit. I probably should have waited. These insights are shown as hints on the development screen, unless you have turned this option off in the settings. Oh I- did I turn it off, I don't fucking know. The hints range from plus, plus, plus to minus, minus. And indicate how important an area is for this type of game. When hints have a question mark at the end. It means you have insights from a game of the same genre But that you are not yet about whether this holds true for this particular genre-topic combination. Good God, this is fucking complex. Umm... Yeah. Gameplay and story. Bring down this a bit. There we go. There we go. Do I have that turned off? Settings. Gameplay hints on, okay, I'm good. So where do I see this shit? Game history... Ooh! Cool-io! I don't have anything else. Umm... Right... 100 plus. That was pretty good for our first game, I gotta say. Um... So how do I...? How do I do the thing then? The hints? I don't know. Ohh, this is confusing. Um. Level design... AI can come down a bit. There we go! Yay! I still have no idea what I'm doing. But I'm enjoying it. I'm having fun. Um. Basic sounds. So I can't get any more, better sounds. Graphics... Oooooh... World design, graphics and sound can go up. There we go. We're still learning! God I'm down to 19K. Recent market studies suggest that the- Govodor... The Govodor 64 is steadily outselling competitors in the PC sector. Consumers prefer the lower price, The greater availability and the flexible hardware... Configuration over other home computers. A Commodore 64 is not more flexible than a PC. Actually, I guess, In these days it is, but back then it wasn't, I can't remember. Experts say that this might spell the end of competing hardware manufacturers. Shit! Why am I developing for fucking PC? Kay I have a lot of- God, I have a lot of research points. Can I actually click research? I could click it a little bit ago. Okay, we gotta- we gotta save time. Our bugs have to go down. The longer we wait the- Ah shit. Okay there we go, there we go, we're finished. We'll see how this game does. Yeah! We got nine and nine last time! Fuck yeah! I- I assume that once I start getting these things up, that I'll be really good at them after a while. Okay, there it is, bring it all in Bring it all in, Yes. Plus 94. Release game, Oh God. Good Judgement. Create a game with a good topic-genre combination. Yeah! I got another achievement but they're not showing up properly. First reviews of your newly released game came in. Oh, this one's gonna be high. A seven! Another seven! RPG games work well on PC. You said that last time you fucking, piece of shit. Dungeon and RPG is a great combination. Get it- round out that seven- YEAH! All Sevens! It's an average game! Actually it's slightly above average. About a five and a six would be average, I'd say. Seven is on the- on the upper scale. Yeah...! We did a good! Now what do I do? Create- Generate game report, okay, there we go. Need to generate a game report. I am fucking selling a shit-ton. Yeah! 34K in Pundertale sales already. Pundetale was so successful that we now have 24 fans. Oh, the people love me! This is so much fun! Good God, I'm selling a lot! Okay, Pundertale. Dungeon and RPG is a great combination. Gameplay seems to be quite important for this type of game. Okay, so I gotta focus on, gameplay. Got it. Should I, keep making the same ones? Keep making like a dungeon RPG? I'm up to 79K now, I'm- I'm higher than I started with. Pundertale has achieved a company record with over 10K units sold. This is an important milestone. An important milestone, in the history of Butts & Stuff. According to the rumours- According to rumours, the Japanese company; Ninvento, Is planning to launch it's very own home gaming console Ninvento Is known for the widely successful arcade game: Dinkey King. Money industry experts doubt that home gaming console will take off But we are eager to see what Nintenvo will deliver. It's gonna take off. Nintendo changed the fucking world with their consoles. Much respect Nintendo! Good God, I'm sellin' fuck - I'm sellin' a SHIT-TON! Um... research. I'm gonna wait for f - Oh god. Should I get a new topic? Pirates? No... Wild West, Aliens... Um... Pirates and action might go well together. I don't know if I should've waited for 15... Or for - for 50! I have 15 now. Should've waited to 50 and got a new game engine. That's what it was, wasn't it? Game history: Look how fuckin' well Pundertale is doing! Our first game had a profit of 6.2k Pundertale already has a profit of 90k! Maybe we should wait for all its sales. You've successfully researched a Pirate. Should I be waiting for this until it's taken off the market? Yeah! Game off the market. Pundertale sold 17 thousand, 123 thousand in sales. That's fucking AWESOME. Research! Nah, I'm not researching, new topic. Okay, I'm actually gonna pause this here and save. AH, I really like this game! This is cool! It's like - again, it's like Tube Tycoon. Tube Tycoon is obviously inspired by this Um, and other Tycoon games But I've never played a proper Tycoon game Like a proper fully fledged one A proper released one, so I'm really looking forward to playing more of this. I think we can be the greatest, the greatest Devs. 'Butts & Stuff'. But anyway, THANK you guys so much for watching this episode If you liked it, PUNCH that like button IN THE FACE, LIKE A BOSS! And... high-fives all round! *wapish, wapish* But thank you guys, and I will see all you dudes... IN THE NEXT VIDEO! 'I'm Everywhere by Tenoaxe' Okee-smokers! It's up to you guys now to help me. If any of you guys have played this already, please give me some tips in the comments I likely should have said this in the normal part, because a lot of people don't know that these outro slates exist But if you have any tips, please let me know. Or any combinations that you think will do well, or if you guys have looked up research on the game and can give me some really decent comments. I'll look over them for the next episode. *tiny claps* YAY!
