hi everyone thanks for joining me today we're going to be making this gorgeous fabric rope this is made out of nothing more than fabric scraps from my stash all I did was cut them into 1 and 1/2 inch strips and I wasn't even super careful about that some of them might be one and a quarter or more they're just roughly one and a half inch fabric strips and they're just scraps they're all different lengths nothing magical about it you can see I have some that are shorter some that are longer some that are really long just I just went through my scraps and cut approximately one and a half inch strips and then I wound them together I'm going to show you how to do that and it creates this beautiful one-of-a-kind twine and I am so excited about how these turned out I made this ball of twine last night just sitting down watching a movie and had my hands working while we were watching the movie my daughter-in-law made this one last night and a gun she used all different colored scraps and I love the way this one turned out so I'm gonna sew this went together for her today and you can see when I experimented I made it some twine and I just made this little coaster now you could keep going make this a rug you could make it a placemat you could make it a trivet whatever you wanted but I just thought these would make cute little coasters and I'm gonna have all different designs and I may even add on to one of these and see if I can make a rug size depending how much I have left so I can't really tell you how much fabric you need it really depends how tightly you wined yours and how long your strips are and just your did your different techniques going to create a different length and it also depends what you want to make obviously if you're gonna make a coaster you're gonna need less obviously than you are for a placemat so this is super easy to do so I'm going to I left this one so that I can keep adding on to it but I'm going to show you how to start from scratch so again you need two pieces of fabric and roughly cut to an inch and a half is what I used you could use whatever you want if you want to use wider strips and have thicker rope and you could absolutely do that so I'm just going to choose two strips of fabric now you want to make sure that they aren't the same linked you don't want them to run out in the same spot so I'm going to use a long one and a short one just like that and all you're going to do is place them on top of each other and tie a knot at one end just to get started so I'm doing two tying them together at one end just to get started nothing hard about that okay so the first thing you're going to do I'm left-handed so I find it easier to hold this side in my left and twist with my right if you're right-handed you might want to hold it in your right hand and twist with your left whatever you'll see you it'll be pretty obviously pretty obvious pretty quickly which is more comfortable for you but for me I'm holding it in my left and I'm going to just take my fabrics I'm gonna hold the nut so that one fabric is towards me and one is towards the back and then I'm just going to twist this one and to start with I'm gonna twist it pretty tight and then I'm gonna take this one and my thumb in my finger and just pull the pink one ahead and then I'm gonna clip grab it with my hand I'm gonna twist the next one and you can twist as tight or as loose as you want and then again I'm going to whoops then again I'm going to pull that one over the front one so you're twisting away from you and then pulling towards you twist away and then pull towards twist away pull towards so you're creating this twine that it'll stay together if you again you're twisting away from you and then you're pulling that side forward so your going to need a some kind of clip I'm going to use one of these clover wonder clips but if you don't have one of those this is what we were using last night you can just use a binder clip or a clothespin whatever you have but you need something to hold it when you get close to the end okay so when you get to a point where you have about an inch and a half of fabric left you need to add more fabric on it to keep going so there are about three different ways that you can add a fabric and I'm just going to go over the one that I use because at for me it works the best and creates the strongest join and but if you want you can just sew it so another piece of fabric on here but since I'm doing this in front of the TV or watching a movie or in bed I'm not necessarily near my sewing machine so I'm not using that method the other math that is you can just roll this take another piece of fabric and roll them together and then keep going I found when I did it that way that I often had a piece of slip out and it creates a weak spot so this is the method that I like to use you take the end that you're working on this is the end that I want to add fabric to and I'm just going to fold it over about a half an inch or so just like that and I'm going to take some scissors and I'm just going to cut a snip right in that cut so now I've created a hole right there and my fabric hopefully you can see that all right so now I'm gonna take another strip and I don't make any rhyme or reason to what color I kind of try to make so that when I have two strips going they're kind of contrasting or not real close in color but that's totally up to you so I'm going to take this end and do the same thing I'm gonna fold it over about a half an inch and I'm going to snip so I've got a hole in that one and a hole in this one I'm gonna take the end with the hole in it and stick it inside this hole just like that so I have this hole sitting here I'm gonna take this end stick it through that hole and then pull it tight and there's my join and if you have some ends sticking out like this you can just trim them off or just twist them into your rope whatever works for you all right so now I can remove my clip and keep going I'm gonna twist away from me and bring it forward and you'll get into a rhythm where this just goes really fast I'm going to twist away from me and pull it forward twist away pull it forward and all the while I'm this hand is holding the net that I just made or the twist that I just made if you find you have a lot of strings you can just snip them off but I actually like the look of the strings but if you have an excess amount you can just twist or take them off so you're always twisting the one in the back away from you and pulling it over the one in the front twist the one in the back pull it over twist the one in the back when you get to this join I'm being I'm gonna twist where that knot is just to try to cover it you'll see it a little bit but it actually just adds to the character twist away pull it forward I'm gonna keep going until we have another join so I can show you that one more time and you can see already how pretty this twine is getting and you can use this rope for whatever you want you don't have to just make rugs and coasters and placemats all right so I've got about I don't know two 1/2 two and a half inches or so I'm gonna stop here put my clip on I'm gonna fold this end over about a half an inch snip grab a new piece fold that end over snip and put that hole through the other hole so it looks like this and if you put it pretty side up so you're looking at both pretty sides when you loop this through it'll come out the right way but it really doesn't matter cuz you end up twisting it anyway so I'm gonna take this end stick it through and pull now I have enough to keep going undo the clip twist away bring it forward twist away bring it forward just away bring it forward just away and again you can twist it my daughter-in-law twisted hers a little bit less than I did and a little she didn't make her twists as tight and you can see hers has a little bit longer of a in-between colors but it's equally cute there's no right or wrong way whatever rhythm you get into whatever feels comfortable and it really doesn't matter of the fabrics because you can't really see the pattern just the colors so you'll see in here I even have like a thing 1 and thing 2 piece fabric you won't be able to tell what that is you'll just see the spot splashes of red splashes of the turquoise so any of your scraps will work and it really looks cool when you have different types of fabric like flannel you throw some flannel in there or some silk fabric or some cotton really I think it looks neat when you have different thicknesses of fabrics and different kinds okay so you guys get the gist I hope so you can see how my rope is taking shape and it's super pretty okay so when you're done you can just tie a knot and end it I'm just gonna put a clip on here because I'll go ahead and finish that later but I wanted to show you how to do this if you want to make a coaster or something okay so this is the one that Maggie made and she just tied a knot at the end and and then I just take the scissors and trimmed off the excess fabric so it does if you have a you know an inch sticking out here just trim it off so that it's nice and snug up to the knot and then you're just going to start twisting it like this keeping it nice and flat if you want more of an oval you can make it more of an oval I'm just going for a circle and you want to get it to about the size of a quarter or so and then just take some straight pins and stick those through just to hold it together temporarily okay straight pin there and that's actually going to be probably hold it enough to get it started so we're gonna take it over to the sewing machine and we're going to use a zig-zag stitch to start sewing this together so I'll meet you over there okay so here I am at the sewing machine I've got my little coil started and I had put the ball of twine in a bowl just off to the side here I think that helps it from going all over the place so the first thing you're going to do is put it under your sewing machine and I'm just going to use a straight stitch to start with and I'm just going to go across just going to sell a straight line top to bottom I'm gonna backstitch all right so now I have just sewn a line as straight like that now I'm just gonna turn it 45 degrees I'm gonna remove my pin I'm just gonna sew another one so I just basically I'm sewing an X so here we have the Center secured snip off that thread okay so now you want to put it so that it's shaped in this would be the letter P we're gonna turn it backwards so the circle is going to the left and your twine is coming over here on the right you're just going to put your sewing machine on a zig-zag stitch and I like to put it on pretty wide I like to keep it doing about a 1.5 length and 7 I was 6.8 whip so now what you're going to do is zigzag in between the current coil and the fabric coming on and you're going to just keep twisting it it's kind of hard when it's little but once you get get it just about a couple of rounds maybe two or three it starts getting a lot easier so just take your time and go slow so I'm going to line it up so that my center line is right between where the coil is and where the new fabric is coming on and I'm just going to turn my speed down just to keep me from going too fast and all I'm gonna do is zig and zag this close and then keep twisting it you might have to turn stop adjust your fabric and again you can make this as close of a stitch as you want if you want yours to be very noticeable if you want it to be less noticeable make it a little bit wider so now that I've got going a little bit I think I'm going to widen mine up to about a 2.5 and again I'm just going to keep adding the fabric okay I'm going to try to rearrange the camera here so that you can see a little bit better so again I'm just feeding the fabric through on the left all right sorry on the right keeping the foil on the left you can see what's happening and again you might need to stop slow down adjust and mmm okay so here I am at the end when you get to the end or it's as big as you want you can nod it off if you didn't want to go this big you could cut it at any point not at all and then what I like to do is kind of cut this tail I'm gonna leave a little bit on there and then we're just going to keep sewing and we're gonna just sew that right down so I'm just gonna go right off the edge now when I get closer to the end right here I'm gonna make my stitches a little bit closer so I can make sure that stays put and it's gonna keep going just around that edge in a back stitch cut my thread and then I'm gonna go back here again and if this is sticking up a little bit I'm gonna take off a little bit of fabric there I'm just gonna go off right off the edge and zigzag again I'm zigzagging at the edge and pulling that down one more time I know pass it a little bit exit and there we have it so it kind of has an end and you can cut off any loose threads right there at the end if you want you can kind of tuck it under and end it that way but I don't mind it I think it looks really awesome the way it is I love the spiral look of it so here's our finished hot pad I don't know how you can see the stitching so you can see the zig zag throughout I just used white bobbin and white thread and this will flatten out as you're sewing I mean if you wanted to make a bowl all you do is start instead of just adding the thread around this way you start lifting this up and it'll make a bowl which is also very cool but if you want it flat it just keep it flat as you're spinning it and then you can give it a press and it'll flatten out the rest of the way you can also go through and trim any of those strings that are left but like I said I kind of like the shabby look of it so this is the size that would be a trivet you throw on the counter to protect it from your hot pans so I hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial I think these are so fun I know I say that every time but I really do enjoy quick and easy projects and these are pretty much a no-fail you can't go wrong Maggie that was the first time Maggie had ever made this rope I showed her about I don't know a little five minute lesson how to twist it and how to join and she took off and you can see I told her I would sew this together for her today and it turned out absolutely gorgeous this is the one I made my very this was my very first attempt at making the Rope and it turned out absolutely perfect there really you can't go wrong and like I said you can make your strips as big or as wide or as small as you want you can use whatever color coordination you want to use but I'm really excited about this I'm can't wait to do this one I think I want to keep making it a little bit longer because I want to attempt to do a whole rug so thanks so much for watching again if you guys make these please tag me on social media you can find me on Instagram and Facebook and Pinterest and I would love to see your version of these fabric rope coasters and placemats and trivets and bowls I think they're so much fun I have everything linked in the description below the video thanks so much for watching as always never stop making see you guys bye
