today I'm going to show you how to make a truly seamless looping video I don't know about you but it sends my OCD into overdrive when I see a looping videos where you can tell where the beginning and the end meet and it drives me crazy so let's get started so today I'm going to be using iMovie yes I know there are plenty of much better video editing software programs out there but iMovie is a really easy program to use and the concepts you learn here you can take into your own video editing software program when you're trying to find a video that's good for looping there are certain things that you want to look for videos that have fixed places in this case we have some fixed objects we have the pier which is a fixed object we have the shoreline which is a fixed object meaning these things are not going to move within the video but you still have some interesting elements within the video which would be the moving clouds and the moving water but how can you integrate these elements into a seamlessly looping video I'll show you how the first thing you want to do is make sure that your video clip is no longer than 35 to 40 seconds long anything longer than that there's too much time that has elapsed which has allowed the environment to change and it will make looping the video much more difficult so try to stay between 35 and 40 seconds in this particular case my video clip is about 35 seconds long now what most people tend to do is they'll take this clip they'll copy it and they'll just keep pasting it into one big long clip but what happens when we hit play is you see that jump let me do that again do you see how the video jumps one more time you're going to watch up here in the sky and you're going to see the video jump so let's get rid of that and what you're going to do is you're going to take your playhead and you're going to put it right in the middle of your video clip you're going to split the clip you're going to take the end of your video clip and you're going to move it to the beginning now in order to get that seamless look we need to do a cross dissolve and to achieve that look in iMovie you go up to transitions choose cross dissolve pull it down between the two video clips and now let's take a look at the video what we're looking for is any obvious signs of a transition let me enlarge this a little bit so we can see I'm still not satisfied with that I can still see the transition in the clouds and that still is not seamless enough for me so I movie default to a one-second cross dissolve what we're going to do is we're going to increase the amount of time in that cross dissolve by right clicking show precision editor and what we're going to do is just increase this cross dissolve to about three seconds we're going to close the editor and now let's take a look at what this looks like now let's take a look and see if we can see that dissolve in the big screen very minor very faint to me it just looks like the clouds changing shape I think this is great now once you have a clip in the loop that you're satisfied with you can copy it and you can paste it and you'll see once you go between this transition here there's not going to be any type of jump and you're just going to have a wonderfully seamlessly looped video you all right and that's all there is to it I hope you enjoyed this and I hope it was helpful come back and join me for some other video and audio tips
