hey guys welcome back to the channel last time you saw us we were putting a floor in the shot bath this time we're gonna add a little bit of privacy by putting a barn door oh we need to start by trimming out the inside of the door frame and we'll continue by building out our own barn door and adding the hardware it's gonna require some modifications to the stuff right here in the way of the track most of that will be doing off-camera because that's not really relevant but if you want to see how to build the barn door how to hang the barn door my name's Alex follow me into my shop let's check to trim out the rough opening of the door to the bathroom I started by cutting down some of these Alouette pieces for the width of the opening of the door [Music] being valid what a lot of this wood goes in pretty rough shape cracks broken spots where I just throw a little bit of glue on there and clamped it down clamped into the workbench and waited for it to dry I'm going for the Industrial / rustic look here intentionally so the fact that these things were broken didn't bother me at all back to even being able to see where it had been glued up I felt like only added to the appearance as for the raw cut edge there where it looks brand-new compared to the rest of it that was covered by trim on the interior side of the door so I didn't mind that too much I used type on three as the adhesive here because this stuff works great for wet areas it's meant for exterior usage knowing that this was going to be the trim on the door to the bathroom I thought it was possible that it can see something on this other piece of wood here there was another crack that this one was close enough to the edge that I can use the nailer to nail it down instead of clamping it so now these two pieces have been repaired and I can use them [Music] so the other day when I made this transition I made it the full width of the rough opening which wasn't the brightest move because now when I have to trim this out I can't go all the way down you can see there's a gap here so I have two options I can either try to trim this particular design into the bottom of this it'll sit flush over top of it or I can cut this threshold to the width of this one of them is finicky cut and the other one is a straight line cut so I think I'm going to cut the threshold rather than pulling that out being that it's anchored in the concrete and it's a little bit more of a pain in the butt I have a multi-tool that I can use that I'll cut it off in place I think so just go get a pencil mark this line come back and clean that up with a multi-tool and then this should be able to slide down in between when somebody please tell this goofball to move his big head how am I supposed to see this video [Music] yep I'm happy with that this little gap right here is just due to the warping of this wood and I'll be talking this up anyway so that'll be just fine now I'm just gonna nail all that in slide trim and that side trim up to the interior opening of the door [Music] [Music] now that everything else has done it's finally time to start working on building the barn door itself the first thing I do is I run all these pieces that are gonna make up my barn door frame through the planer to get rid of the cupping and inconsistencies in the wood some of them are still a little worked after it's all said and done but it doesn't matter too much because the way I'm going to assemble this with glue screws and it's going to be sandwiching a piece of metal more to come over [Music] now we're going to use the table saw to cut off the rounded edges of each of the pieces of the frame to the door following that we're gonna take it over to the miter saw cut them down to the approximate length that we need based on the plans that I made for the frame of the door [Music] [Music] [Music] until potholes into the top and bottom of the door frame now I'm just adding a little bit of glue and screwing it together this will set up for just a short little while and then I'll spend some time getting it tweaked to be completely flat again because it has a little bit of warping in it and after that we'll start the assembly process it's not really apparent in any of this video but I did take my time to come back and clean up any of the glue that sneezed out I sanded or I wiped it off the main reason being that when it comes time to put the stain on there any glue that's exposed will protect the wood from the stain and then you'll end up with these spots that don't get standing that's really funny so make sure you clean up any of the glue squeeze-out if you're planning on doing any stain [Music] [Music] now it was time to cut my metal down to the exact height you'll notice that I'm throwing sparks all over a wood workbench with some scrap wood sitting there even at the time I knew this wasn't the brightest idea what I have a fire extinguisher behind me and I'm paying close attention to what where the sparks are landing and keeping an eye out for any sign of anything igniting take your time set up your guard correctly try your best not to shoot Sparks and stuff if you have to make a risky move like I am here by shooting sparks all over would just make it a calculated one be aware of what you're doings that you can address the situation if one does come now I'm just gonna move my medal over the place that I can mock it up to see how it looks and figure out the next steps for how I'm going to secure right after giving it some thought here's what I think I'm gonna do I'm gonna take this my six and that's three quarters of an inch thick I'm going to put a half inch I don't know if you would call it that data I guess it'd be a wrap I'm gonna kind of happen to wrap it into this get taken out emotional material Woodson's flushed with the frame on the bottom but then creates a opening here for the middle to sit inside then I can screw the two pieces of wood together and then the medallist captive inside of the two frames it's no I'm gonna go make a second frame with this after cutting these rabbits into it here I'm just quickly cutting the rabbits into this piece of wood these are what are gonna allow the piece of board to sit tight up against the front frame as well as overlap and make the metal captive in between the two frames be very careful here this is probably not the safest way with my hands where they are granted I know where the blade is I know what the height of it is and I know that I'm well above the height of it but anytime you're reaching out over the blade like this you should reconsider and I should have reconsidered [Music] so you'll see I'm already attacked the other three places the other three sides in place this rabbit I've got cutouts on all of them this is the final piece you just see that when I screw this down yeah actually sandwiches the metal inside of it or so holes in the metal captain inside of the frame of the door and what I've been doing is I've just been resetting a little hole right there and then driving a screw in just one each end of the wood just enough to you know make sure that everything lines up this before I go through and actually fill in along the way so I'll go through and I'll add the rest of the screws along the edges to hold the metal in captain and then we'll stand it up and see how it looks all right guys here it is flipped over I am really happy with the way that looks my plan originally was to put X's in here to match the vanity and that might still happen but for now my biggest goal is to get this hum get the hardware put on it so that I can get the track put in place and get the main build complete if I want to do a little accent work then that's great and then the next thing will be staining and sanding this will get this we'll get that the brackets mounted on it and all I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna follow these instructions that came with it I got this just in Kaysville which is just about 10 15 minutes south of me the Gala's garage is a local company they manufacture these barn door hardware's so I'm going to follow the instructions get the stuff mounted on here and then get it home all right so I'm starting to hang the rail it's time to use a level I threw one bolt in following the manufacturer's instructions for this kit and I just found the vertical 2x4 stud right here that goes on the inside of the door frame I'll go over here this other one it looks like it's totally gonna line up perfect right there but then before I pre drill this hole I want to try to get it level so I think that's [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] I'm excited I just wanna try it I know I need to still put in a bunch more bowls right there but let's hang in here and see what hats it makes putting a coat of stain on it and it's looking awesome [Music] hany my microphone decided not to work at all this is me telling you about what we did for the door handle for this it's just iron pipe used with two elbows two nipples two flanges in an 8-inch section I spray-painted a flat black and I'll screw them on to the barn door alright guys that's it the doors all done it works really well nice and smooth motion on the track yeah I like the door handle looks it kind of gives that industrial look but it follows along with the look that we have inside the bathroom with the towel racks and stuff that are using this same design the door slides really nice I'm really happy with the way it turned out I love the rustic look ultimately again another project that we're super satisfied with I got the hardware for the sliding barn door from a local place in Kaysville Utah called the gals garage I'll put a link down below check them out again you know another project that we just finished up here on the homestead hopefully you're enjoying our content if you are definitely subscribe hit the bell and why more like it oh
