How to Install Windows Server 2012,16,19 or 22 on a FREE Hetzner VPS from their provided ISOs

in this video I am going to demonstrate step by step how to install a copy of Microsoft Windows 2012 2016 2019 or 2022 on a hetzner VPS from the original Microsoft CDs that hetzner have made available in their ISO store they're small but still reasonably sized VPS which we will be using usually costs about 5 Euros a month but with them having a free trial offer of 20 euros credit it means that the VPS is essentially free for the first four months I will also show you the desktop configuration that must be done if you are going to access this machine remotely using RDP the result as you can see on screen is an internet-based Windows server that because I am going to go step by step through everything pretty much anyone can build so without further delay let's get cracking there is a link in the YouTube description that takes you to this special offer webpage where I press continue and then the sign up button foreign existing users can simply log on at this stage new customers who want to get the 20 Euro in credits will use the register Now button instead to go to the main registration page whatever route you take you will end up at this main hexner Cloud starting webpage as I'm happy to put the new server under the default project I select it then start the dialog to create a new server for location I select the new USA Data Center in Ashburn for image it doesn't matter what I select here as for demonstration purposes I will be replacing it with Windows server in a minute as such I leave the default in place for machine or VPS size I select the smallest option that's fine for running a basic machine however if I was planning to install lots of extra software later I will probably find the 40 gigabyte disk too restrictive but for now I will leave the smallest size selected I will show you how to resize an existing VPS on subsequent screens that offers more flexibility I give the VPS a descriptive name and then create the server [Music] once created I select the server before I start installing Windows I will quickly show you the resize server options [Music] on this screen I can upgrade just the CPU and RAM which means as I didn't increase the disk size I can always downgrade it again in the future however if I uncheck this box it also lists the possible machine sizes below that will also include bigger disks however that would mean I could never downgrade machine sizes in the future as if I make this change it's permanent so it is something I will leave as is for now and only do it when I need it so to install Windows I select the iso images tab and search for and ISO with the string win in it now for ease during this demonstration I am going to use server 2016 because it's on screen and I can easily switch between that and the vert i o drivers that are also on screen which I will have to do a couple of times if I did not have a preference I would probably install server 2019 or server 2022 as both these newer operating systems are more resilient against any internet-based threats they are exposed to both also use less of my precious disk space than older versions but as I said earlier just for this demonstration I am going to use server 2016 so I mount that ISO foreign [Music] I then turn off the VPS and back on again so it boots from the ISO [Music] and then open a console viewing window and select GUI mode the server install process has started and I proceed in the normal way [Music] at this point I stop because as you can see on screen the driver it needs so it can see the hard disk is not present on the installation CD so I now Mount the vert IO ISO to get it from there [Music] thank you I now select load driver and browse to the AMD 64 folder for the Vos CSI driver I need for this version of Windows server and load it [Music] thank you now I can see the disc I remove all the existing Ubuntu partitions from it foreign [Music] [Music] I now Mount the original Windows Server ISO I was using refresh the installation dialog so it's recognized and proceed with the installation in the normal way [Music] oh [Music] foreign I normally enter a password that is long that is over 10 characters complex and not found in a dictionary for the administrator user ID as this VPS will be on the internet but as this is just a demonstration I just enter a short one so I don't miss key it while recording [Music] foreign at this screen I hit the control alt and delete button then enter the administrator password and hit enter [Music] thank you the server desktop appears however at the moment I will be unable to connect using my local PC's remote desktop connection or RDP but I will fully resolve that in the next step thank you the first thing I am going to do is load all the remaining vert i o drivers after remounting its ISO so I do that [Music] thank you [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign now because Microsoft has patched the RDP protocol since this version of Windows Server came out it won't connect to my Windows 10 client on my local PC until I update it this may also apply to Future other versions of Microsoft server in the future so I would always update it whatever version I was using which will also include the many bug fixes that are needed to bring it bang up to date because I will be applying seven years of patches since this version came out taking about 30 minutes to apply and it will appear hung at various points but it isn't however through the magic of video it will only take a few seconds [Music] thank you I now enable remote desktop and switch off the enhanced Internet Explorer security that would otherwise stop me from downloading an up-to-date web browser like Google Chrome because it is very important that I don't use the unsupported Internet Explorer browser for any longer than is absolutely necessary [Music] foreign [Music] to refresh the screen I click away and then back onto it [Music] at this point just to show or remind you I load Disk Management if I were to increase the vps's disk in the future I will need to enter here and extend the C partition otherwise windows won't see the extra disk space [Music] I now go to computer management and list the users on the machine I have found in testing that when I rename the default user of administrator it means that because almost all internet Bots try and log on using RDP with the administrator user ID and a guest password this reduces random log on attempts by a massive 99.7 percent therefore although this step is not compulsory I always do it [Music] thank you just as a reminder I load the current activation page foreign [Music] it shows that this copy is obviously not yet activated I believe depending on what version of Microsoft server that has been installed it will operate for up to 180 days but don't quote me on that I have linked to the hetzner knowledge base article upon which this video is based that talks about licensing which I encourage you to read but for now this video is just going to explain the process described in that document finally I restart the server to ensure all the configuration changes are in full effect [Music] we are now ready to connect via RDP to connect via RDP I start the windows remote desktop connection software and paste in the server's IP address from the hetzner website [Music] I key in the RDP administrator user ID and tick the box that allows me to save credentials foreign I leave the display as full screen on the local resources tab I ensure only printers clipboard and drives are checked [Applause] [Music] I return to the general Tab and press connect [Music] when asked I enter the user's password as this is the very first time I'm connecting it may take a few extra seconds [Music] finally The Machine's desktop appears and that's it we are now finished during the making of this video I have found the hetzner VPS to be quite fast inexpensive and with an easy to use web-based
