Hi everyone, i'm eloy from knowledge sharing tech in this video, i want to show you how to get a free microsoft office alternative and how to install it on your mac computer. The free office alternative i'm gonna show you is libreoffice. There are many other free offers applications on the internet but the best one in my humble opinion is libreoffice. You have like wps office, open office and so on but libreoffice is the most widely used and and it is a most compatible with all the platforms. So you have libreoffice for linux you have libre office for windows and for mac and it is also the most up-to-date so it is updated regularly. To perform the demonstration i will be using mac os monterey but the instructions i'm going to show you also apply to other mark os versions. So let me switch to my mac computer and show you the instructions step by step. So let me switch now and this is my mac computer. So as i said, this is a monterey version. First you need to start safari. So click on safari and then in safari go to libreoffice.org And in libreoffice here click on download and then select download libreoffice. And then here you have your operating system that is here. If it was detected by error, another operating system, click on the drop-down list and make sure that mac os is selected and then click on download. And the download should start any second now. So here's the download started so it's not a big download. It's only two hundred 80 megabytes. So now the download finished. Let me close safari. We don't need that anymore and let's go to the downloads folder. So under find out here click on downloads and you see libre office it is downloaded here. So now we need to mount it because it's a dmg file. So double-click on it. And it will be mounted as you see here it is mounted. So let me minimize. Yes! And when you mount the dmg file, you have this auto start screen here and it's sending you to copy libre office to the application. So simply here, click on libreoffice and drag it to applications when you have the plus sign, the green plus sign, as you see it just to drop it and now it should copy libreoffice as you see, and applications. So it is performing the copy. Now let's give it a minute to finish. So i'm going to accelerate the video now. So now the copying of libre office to applications is finished. We can close this splash screen here and we can unmount libreoffice. So i just right-clicked on it and i'm going to select eject and we can even also, if you want to like clean your desk, you can even delete this. So let me move it to thrash also here so we don't need it anymore. What we downloaded from the internet. And now we have libreoffice office in your applications so you can find it here in the launchpad. Let me click launch pad and you notice libre office is here. So let me start it. Just click on it. It will start you see at the starting here and for the first time when it starts at, we'll verify it. So give it a couple of seconds to verify it. And this is here also. It will ask you if you want to open a libreoffice because it was downloaded from the internet and it was not installed from the app store. So simply click on open. And here is the welcome screen of libreoffice. So we can dock it here if you right click on it here and you select options, you can keep it in dark here if you select keep and dunk. So it will be docked here always so you can access it more easily and you are the applications of libreoffice. So you have writer which is equivalent to microsoft word. I just clicked on it and here it will give you a tip. If you don't want to see this you can uncheck this here, here. Check a show tips on startup and just click okay. So let me show you here in writer how you can modify the menu. So it will be a tab menu like the new microsoft office look. So click on view and then click on user interface and under user interface here click on tab and then click on apply to all. So this way you apply these settings to the writer, to the calc, which is equivalent of microsoft excel to impress, which is the equivalent of powerpoint and so on. And then click on apply to all as i said and then click on close. So here you see you have your tab menu and how it is here. So this is writer if you type anything here and you try to save it. It will save it by default as odf which is open document format i think. So of course here you can change it toward but i want to show you also how you can change it to be a default to save as word and office documents. And this will apply also to writer and all these applications and libreoffice. So here in libreoffice, click on libreoffice and then click on preferences. And under preferences click on load save and then general and the under general you have document type and you have always say bars. So if you want to change this to always save and microsoft office format. So first we need to do it for the text document which is writer here. So at the selected so click here and then select word. 2007-8. 65 and then click apply and then here select spreadsheet which will apply to calc and gonna show you later on. So when you select spreadsheet here, click on the drop-down list here and then select excel 2007 dash 365 click apply. We still have powerpoint which is impress presentation. So select presentation and then here click on the drop-down list and then select power powerpoint 2007, dash 365 apply and then ok. So let me close now this file. So if i want to click on save, it will automatically put word here. So let me save it anything to keep it on untitled 1 and then click on save and then click on ok. So now it is saved under documents. So let me start for instance calc just to show it to you and let me fight anything here. So in calc 2 here, i'm going to save the document, so i'm going to click on save. Let me keep it also untitled, and it will save it as excel document. I'm going to show you why i am saving these documents now. It is also to change the default association so that when you double-click a document, it will open a libreoffice. So i'm going to click on save and i still want to do this for impress, which is the presentation, which is equivalent of power a point. So i'm going to open anything. And then let me save it also. So here i'm going to keep it on untitled and you see it will save in pptx, which is a powerpoint 2007 365. I'm going to click on save. So let me close impress and now let me show you how to change the default association. I'm going to show you why. Also we are doing this. So if you go to finder on the documents and you see here, if you double-click The dock which is the word document it will open by default. And the application that came was mac os which is i think the text editor let me close it. So to open it was deeply office and to associate it permanently with libreoffice right click on it and then choose open with and then choose other. And he had selected in the list libreoffice and then here make sure to select always open with. So i'm going to select it and then i'm going to click on open and you see it opened in libreoffice so let me try it now. And it opened in libreoffice. So let me try the other two extensions to see if they are associated correctly. Let me double-click on the excel file. So you see the excel file is associated correctly so we don't need to change its association and the powerpoint file. It is also associated correctly with libreoffice. So that was it for installing and configuring libra office on your mac computer. I hope you enjoyed this video and you found it useful.
