this is the door I'm going to be installing believe this is a home depot or lowes door customers supplied it let's see if it's gonna work all right rough opening 38 and 1/4 82 and 1/8 this is my first thing to even figure out if I can start now the jamb four and 9/16 that's not gonna be big enough I see that it already has the brick molding on it I'm gonna need a jamb extension these are 2 by 6 exterior walls this is for a 2x4 wall and on these jamb extension kits you've got to pull the brick mold off install the jamb extension then reput the brick mold back on so one other quick measurement I'm gonna take is right here just to eyeball that's two and a half inches right there from the gasket to where the brick mold attaches hey this is the existing door it doesn't look too bad but they've got some rot underneath here yes I bring my dog with me sometimes you've got some plastic brick mold even though it looks just the same you can see how it's cracked out there and right off the bat I can see that this Jam is 4 and 1/2 right there it's 4 and 1/2 inches so I could do a jamb kit to extend it most likely I won't be reusing this interior trim whoever put this on put it right straight up to the jam and then did all this custom carving and insides even even weirder they had room to go over but they decided to do this whole notching thing for the hinge pin in the hinge plenty room there so I'm not gonna worry too much about saving it even though it someone put a lot of time into it this video is powered by jabber jabber is your all-in-one business management system it's for people who work in the home services industry from scheduling communicating billing it covers everything that leads us to our second jabber minute permanent is where I take a viewer-submitted question that relates to this project question actually just got asked again last night I'm always talking about market research for people who are trying to figure out how much to charge and this this specific video took me way back probably 2010 I was working on a house Stiga I was remodeling a basement bathroom and a neighbor comes over and says hey I've got this new front door that I purchased at Home Depot can you take a look at it we have a quote from Home Depot and they want to charge $1200 so that was one of my early introductions into market research well what are other people charging that's what you need to find out and as a homeowner you need to get multiple estimates you need to get at least three so you know just who you're dealing with what what the options are as far as quality confidence in the guys that are gonna do the work for you and the price when you work in this business long enough you just kind of figure it out you do trial and error you start high and work your way down or you start low and just keep bumping your prices up and up and up until you start to see you're losing job pretty simple to figure out what the market in your area will sustain for a specific job don't overthink it it does take some time trial and error asking around I always am fishing to see how much other contractors are charging for this type of work that I do so as you can see them taking off the the plastic plastic trim this is a first for me I have never seen a house that is screwed to the outside by a metal flange watching it over here to the left the door jams were also metal so it is pretty common to have the thing held in place by screws that go through the hinges the hinges and just inside the the weather stripping little later on you'll see me take the weather stripping off pre-drill and through the the latch side to the house [Music] now jumped a little bit ahead of you I put this house wrap on or this this window indoor rubber membrane it's very very sticky and it seals up very very tight I also made this piece of flashing here to try to keep the water out it doesn't have gutters it currently doesn't have a storm door the deck is at the same level as the house you usually want to have the deck down a step if you're building the deck don't put it up to the that'll let the the same level as the the doors so in there I'm just popping off the brick molding this is the same day I went and got a jamb extension kit it comes with three pieces of wood and a threshold extension that you'll see me right there I'm showing you what the threshold extension looks like and it just sits got a channel and it slides on it's it's pretty easy right here's slides right down this is for a 2x6 wall wait now I'm going to use my 15 gauge brad nailer to tack the the jamb extension in place later on you'll see me actually screw it to the the door jamb here I'm screwing the hinge side to the framing through one of the hinge holes here I'm pulling off the weather stripping and pre-drilling for the other side now everything is shimmed into place there's a lot of shimming that didn't quite make the final cut of this video got to keep moving along there is a lot of trial and error where are you shim and screw and you go inside and you look at the reveal you back the screw out push the shims in a little bit more to move the doorframe around a bit it just takes 20 minutes maybe not not even 20 minutes 10 minutes at the most of just going back and forth here you see me checking out the reveal and making sure that it's perfect all the way around you don't want it wrapped you don't want one side closer than the other you'll want it rubbing you want enough gap for expansion and contraction with different seasons high humidity seasons early summer things swell up and you don't want the door hitting Oh already putting in the deadbolt alright like this like I said this project goes pretty quick putting in this sort of a fancy handle it can be a little intimidating at first drilling a hole through a $500 door but once you do it a few times and you use the directions it you just get out your drilling wood built right in so what am I doing here now oh now I'm screwing the brick mold to the original door jamb it just gets it to stick on there just more structurally sound when you screw it on there and it's covered up by the brick molding I'm adjusting the brick molding right now hammer are nailing it in and it's this projects about over it took maybe 30 45 minutes to get the old one out the new one in doing the the rubber flashing around the outside and cleaning out all the the rotted siding the bottom corners like I said earlier we're broke and rot out freezing and thawing water when you set the door you want a whole bunch of bed of silicone caulking it didn't make the final cut or I didn't have the camera on because it's not here I'm using on the inside trim I'm using an 18 gauge nailer I think they're about 2 inches long makes for a smaller nail hole my battery's about to die so I got to wrap this up things left to do is put the screw hole covers on everything in get some sort of trim piece for that threshold and then the inside is done the outside they're getting this house painted supposedly so there's bottom row a siding here is gonna be repaired or replaced maybe even a couple boards of siting when the house is is painted if it wasn't gonna be painted I might use some some door glass it's like a couple hundred percent waterproof bondo type stuff to repair those those cracked areas where it just completely rotted away there's no gutters and there's just a ton of water and a ton of snow that falls off this house and goes ker-plop right there that's why they had that water intrusion if they had a cover over it or even just gutters it would have kept thousands of gallons of water from dumping right there over the last I think this house might be 20 years old 20 not quite 20 years old maybe 15 16 years old and the warranty most doors warranty are void unless if there is no cover there's no cover your warranty on the door is done everything is justed correctly the threshold is adjusted and everything is shimmed correctly for a good reveal many questions put them in the comment section below
