today we're going to be talking about genuine batteries versus aftermarket batteries versus counterfeit batteries as you can see I have various different DeWalt batteries up here a couple of these on this table are a counterfeit battery however from just visually looking at them they appear to be genuine I'm going to show you here today is how to identify a fake battery versus a genuine battery so the first thing you need to understand is there's different categories and the first one I would describe as aftermarket batteries now these are the people that are online selling batteries and they'll be just a generic lithium ion on here and it'll say DeWalt or something on there it's pretty clear that that's not a genuine battery the seller's not claiming it to be a genuine battery and you understand that it's not so that's similar to if you go to auto parts store and there's aftermarket parts in there for your car very similar there's no problem with that if you want to buy the cheaper aftermarket one fair enough you know I think those are fine the second category is where it starts to get a little bit Shady where you'll see all the packaging over here looks very similar but then the seller will slip a little forward up here on the front and I'll show you a side-by-side example of one of them that I recently saw on eBay there for me if I walked into a place or if you know I'm looking online I can easily spot that out someone like my dad who was in his 70s he's probably not going to pick that out and then that seller is basically selling you a aftermarket counterfeit battery that's not a genuine battery but you might have thought it was then the third is the downright criminals that make packaging just like this and everything's 100 percent looks legit but it's not and these two back here I'll give you a little hint those are not genuine batteries and as you can see they look pretty similar to the regular you know nine times out of ten people look at these they're not going to spot a difference in that battery and they're going to think that's a genuine however those are knockoffs in the back and I'm not sure if DeWalt realizes how big of a problem they have if you go onto eBay right now you will see pages and pages of these out there people think they're buying genuine batteries and they're not for this example here a seller sold roughly 25 to 30 of them there's all kinds of positive feedback and all those people that have bought those they all thought they're getting genuine there was only one person out of that entire 50 that that seller sold that's put a negative comment out there and said those are counterfeit batteries so as you can see they're tricking a lot of people here so my goal here today is to kind of help you figure out how to identify a genuine battery versus a fake battery so the one thing you hear a lot of people talking about online is simply open them up and you can tell yes that is accurate however if you only have one battery you have nothing to compare it to and obviously that's going to take more time to open it up I recently came across a pdf online there from DeWalt support pages and they talk about a couple ways that you can identify how to see if it's a counterfeit battery versus genuine I'll post that picture here in a second now I do think some of that might be some of the older batteries but nonetheless depending on what you're looking at and you know it's relevant here but the first thing they talk about is the screws and if you see the screws they talk about theirs being more pronounced versus the generic ones and I'll show you a picture of this one here you can see a little bit of a difference there between yes the genuine is a little bit more pronounced this one is matte now I'm sure people selling these counterfeit batteries out there that's something they could adapt to but nonetheless I do kind of see a difference in these two here and not something to check the second is they talk about the recycle icon on the front and the CC in the back according to their support Pages there they say you will never see the CC and the recycle on a single battery it's always going to be one or the other the third thing they talk about is spelling mistakes obviously if you guys have got any spam email before you understand what that's all about the extra space is the extra commas just downright misspelled words obviously if you see any of that on the back here that's a sure bet way to know that it's a counterfeit as well the last thing that they talk about and this is the one I would recommend doing almost immediately because it's the sure bet way simply called DeWalt give them that number right there and they will tell you yes that's a valid part number that we have or no it's not and obviously if it's not then you know somebody made this number up so it's a counterfeit battery so to me that's the best way to identify if it's counterfeit battery or not and that's actually what I had to do with these over here because you know as you can see that looks a hundred percent the same the only thing I can see a little bit different are the extra holes up here for the air vents I'm assuming what those are now I don't know if that's just a different packaging or maybe an order I have no idea but all the ones I've looked at I I do not see that so that's the only thing visually and maybe a little bit of the screws not being pronounced as the genuine but other than that this thing looks identical now there are people that talk about the QR codes and as you can see on this one it does not have a QR code but if you go to dewalt's website their batteries on their own website some of them don't show the QR codes either now I'm not sure if that's because they're trying to phase out the QR codes because any of you guys that have ever skinned any of these DeWalt QR codes even on the genuine you know even some of these brand new power Stacks over here none of those QR codes work for them I'm not sure what's wrong with dewalt's I.T Department why they can't figure out how to get a QR code to work but you scan these they're all going to come back and say product not found so if you scan that QR code and it comes back not valid for one of these batteries don't be alarmed by that because I'm not convinced any of them work their tools appear to work on the QR codes but not their batteries so then the last thing we'll talk about is how can you figure out what sellers to buy these products from so you don't even have to go through this process and it's pretty easy obviously your retailers your home improvement stores you know they're getting them directly from DeWalt so there should be no problems there if you look at Amazon the one thing I always tell people is buy products that are shipped from and sold by Amazon if you go in there and it shows yeah that's Amazon Prime but then it's sold by a third-party company look at that third-party company if it's a valid third-party company you recognize you know a major retailer there's all kinds of them out there I'm sure that's fine if you look at that seller and it's some random wholesale name or some random name there's a good chance that that's probably going to be one of these out here or at a minimum you're gonna have to go through this process that we talked about here today to figure out if it's genuine so don't waste your time with that to me stick with the retailers that have it and again there's nothing wrong with buying stuff from Amazon you just have to understand the products that you're buying from buy it from Amazon not from the third parties again you can buy from the third parties but just make sure they're Major Brands all the reviews out there on all kinds of tools that you see people saying these are counterfeit or these are fake from Amazon they bought it from a third party they didn't quote buy it from Amazon so that's one thing to keep in mind uh you know as you go through the process of trying to get a genuine battery and again sometimes it's easier just to go to those National retailers because you don't have to go through this process that we've talked about here today so hopefully this information helped you out here today if it did please give me the thumbs up if you're interested in more content like this please hit that
