That first episode lacked a lot of the subtlety the show had later on, which makes sense as you want to get a lot of info out there so the show gets picked up. The pilot hits us over the head numerous times about Sal's sexuality. I thought the best (if you want to call it that) moment with Sal was when he is acting out Bye Bye Birdie for the commercial he was directing and his wife realizes that something is not right with their marriage.
A little "on the nose" but a great line nonetheless.
The pilot episode had a few of those "wink-at-the-camera" moments - another one was when Don accuses Pete of stealing his notes directly from his garbage bin "unless they've invented some machine that makes instant copies" (or something like that), for example.
I'm kind of glad they did away with those after the pilot. Mad Men wasn't really a show made for 4th wall humour like that (except maybe the episode where everyone gets high).
