[Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh yeah [Applause] [Music] you know what would go good with that red romaine lettuce [Applause] [Music] you welcome back we're going to talk a little bit on how to plant these red romaine lettuce seeds and I wanted to do a little quick video on how to do lettuce because people have a lot of trouble with it and its really very easy and I like to grow all my lettuce in little starter cups and then once it gets up transplanting size I put it in containers and I grow it out on my grow table and that keeps it up off the ground so it ain't getting a bunch of dirt and stuff splashed on it when it rains or when I turn on the irrigation so it's pretty clean when I go to harvest it and it's up level on the table so it's easy to harvest I'm not bending over breaking my back getting down on my hands and knees but I can just simply walk up to the table and snip off enough for lunch you tend to make a lot more salad when it's easy to get to so that's what we're going to do here's the lettuce we're going to use it's a red romaine lettuce pretty easy to grow and it's pretty good pretty tasty pretty hearty so let's get started first thing I want to do is use some potting mix and I like to use this right here because it's sterile it's easy to work [Applause] what I do is I get the cups up to like the top and I level it off where I can see the seams in between the cells see I like to get that if I lead this dirt on here and it laps over from cell-to-cell even in here what happens is when these things root those roots run horizontally and they tangle up with the other cells and then when I pull them out to transplant them they're on all tangled up together I end up stressing them out because I'm really tearing the roots a little bit so if I lower it down like that or I can see in between all the cells that makes it a lot better once I have it in there I wet it down just a little bit we'll let that soak through we'll be back in about just a minute okay you can see the water has made its way through the cells and what I do at this point is I tap it see how that exposes these tops a lot better and it packs it down a little bit more so it's not quite as loose and full of air so I get a lot of that out a lot of that air out just by tapping it a few times and I take the lettuce seeds [Applause] and you see how small they are they're hard to deal with see they're hard to get a hold of them so what I want to do is put just a couple of - two or three of them in a cell and can you see past my hand mm-hmm there you go get two or three in a cell and if you get more that's alright ain't the end of the world just put you a few in there like that save this for another day now here comes the tricky part is how to get these covered up these are real delicate you don't want to get them too deep until you get yourself some chopsticks if you ever get Chinese dinner and you get some leftover chopsticks you want to save them because they work perfect see there so I take the chopstick and I go into the cell where the seeds aren't and I actually see how I mix it all together it's just like you're mixing up baby food you get that seeds where they're mixed into that soil where they're going good contact with it and it's kind of mixed together that's really what you want it to do you can't do that with your fingers I put my fingers in there all I do is bury them too deep so you get some of these sticks or any old stick a pencil will do it and you get them in there and just kind of mix it together okay next step is I take a little more my moderate potting mix just barely cover them up because remember you we already kind of mix the seeds and the dirt together so it's kind of blended in pretty well right now [Music] now I have the d'etre does not have any drain holes in it and these do so I'll add water to the tray and let this absorb the water from the bottom up whenever our water now I'll put this in my underneath the arm in the house and start these seeds in the house and when the lettuce gets up and emerges and breaks ground and I'll have it under the grow light for you know a couple of weeks or so until we get this up ready to transplant then we'll come out here and put it in a container so we'll be back in a couple of two or three weeks here and when this is ready to go into the little containers and we'll we'll take a progression of the lettuce all the way up through the growing stages until we harvest it so we see back in a couple of weeks okay after I got them the soil covered I want to always remember to put the sentiment on this is a natural fungicide so it keep that those starter cups from getting a fungus started because once we get fungus started then the fungus gnats attack and I can't stand on little things so always add your sentiment well it's been six days since we planted our lettuce seed last week and I wanted to show you an update on where we're at with those everything's emerged and it's time for me to do a little trim work on this so let me show you what it's time for me to do what I'd like to do with my seedling for my lettuce get up about this size there's two ways I can go here the first way is I'll let these grow up until it's time to transplant out into containers and I'll take that cell and I'll I'll break that cell in half and use it that way this way is the preferred way I like to do it is I like to trim them down to where I have about two I want to get about two seedlings per container and I don't like to pull my seedlings out I like to trim them off like that because if I try to pull them out by the roots that it could damage the ones that are you know next to them so I carefully try to just cut them off at ground level like that and I take out the the trimmings I take them out so that they're not laying in there decaying which can cause more problems with my fungus gnats so let me go ahead and finish this up and we'll go to the next step okay I got them all trimmed out and last thing I want to do is I add a little bit more of my cinnamon on here because this still got some more days to go in the seed starting wrack my seed starters inside the house so still a little cool for them to create that fungus so I put that cinnamon on there to stop that okay I got it trimmed up thinned down and I'm going to put it back into seed rack for a little while longer and we'll be back it will be back in a couple of weeks so we'll see it in red romaine lettuce is really coming along really nice as you can see it's gotten up pretty good-sized to bring it outside to let it harden off so I'm going to put it out here on the UM on the seed rack for about three days three or four days and let this harden off and get used to using this photosynthesis skills and soon as it gets a little stronger will transplant it over into the containers I'll put it right here where it can gobble up that morning Sun and we'll be back in about a week okay well the red romaine lettuce as you can see is now ready to plant you can come up take a good look at it see where we're at I'm going to plant twelve containers today that's all good one that's all we can do and I got the containers ready I'm using the five quart container for lettuce notice that I got the holes drilled in the bottom plenty of holes I wanted to I want that water to fall through I don't want a root rot my Thai lettuce seed they root rot easily now I'm going to add a little bit of bone meal I mean not bone meal blood meal from nitrogen because I'm looking for extra growth on the lease so if I add that nitrogen it pushes the leaf growth which is what I want for lettuce so I'm going to put about two tablespoons in each container and you notice that I do this with my hand I'm not sitting here measuring it that's because I put two tablespoons in my hand and I know what they what two tablespoons feels like in my hand so for years whenever I want to do this I don't have to get out amazing or anything I know what it does and then what it feels like luckily that blood meal smells Bingbing you can leave it now you know that's not for you now I got the bone meal in there next thing I want to do is saturate the container I want to saturate it because I want the lacquer gin to dissolve somewhat and I want to soak that container soil really good because this dry it's got a lot of peat mixed in with it and everything so I've used this reclaimed soil one-third reclaimed soil from last year I amended it you can look at our soil amendment video Nancy I put a little link at the end of this one to show you how I do that so that that's been amended one-third reclaim soil one-third peat and one-third cow manure and I ended it with bone meal nitrogen in line now that I'm getting ready to do the plant I want to add a little more nitrogen to the pot to give it that extra boost to get that get that leaf birth going so let's get that watered in [Music] mutter and I'll let that that pot soaked all the way down through say that it's it's been moistened and it's pliable it makes the transplant process much easier if it's good and pliable and pre-moistened so it's easier on the roots it's easier to plant and it keeps up the the mortality rate of my transplants go a lot better when they don't have to go through a lot of roof shock you definitely don't want them to dry so saturate that soil really good I'll be back back in just a minute when you get all these okay what I do to transplant my lettuce is I dig me a hole and I want that hole to be about the same depth as the cups so you see that cups about two inches deep so is that hole okay once I get that done I come to the bottom of the cup and I push it with my thumb so they pop out easily you can just pop them right out see then you can carefully take the whole root ball and all and drop it right in that soil and close it up pack around the sides [Applause] a little more soil on the top tuck it in good and now I'll go over to the grow table and water these in so let me put this into the wagon and I'll fill up the wagon I'll take it over there and we'll set them out water men so we'll be back let me get the rest of these plant and we'll head over okay we got a pretty good little stand on the of salad dress of salad out here on the salad bar all these I planted a couple of weeks ago now here's all the red romaine we just did all I got to do now is just water each one in [Music] [Music] okay we got all over red romaine transplanted and in the pots and will be back in a couple of weeks ahead and we'll take a look at the progression of these until we get them up big enough to come out here and make a delicious 3-letter salad so we'll see you back shortly well the red romaine has been growing out here in the containers for about two weeks and as you can see it's made quite a bit of progress even in our twenty-five mile an hour winds we've had for the last 10 days in a row but these are almost ready to eat so we'll leave them right out here and probably in another week week and a half these things will be up nice big you know like the the size of the green romaine see how much it's grown so it'll be that same size very shortly as soon as it is will come out and you can start harvesting this and enjoy it for weeks and what I usually do is when it gets to about this point I'll go ahead and start another round a seed I can get another harvest on down the road so we'll be back in a week or two and we'll take a look at them well our romaine lettuce has finally got to the point where it's time to start eating some so we're real happy there they turned out to be beautiful all the way from seed so today I'm going to harvest some so we can have half some pearl unch and I wanted to show you how I harvest these so you can get multiple harvest out of it you'll come up over here kind of close where you can see it it's coming probably right here you can see how beautiful the plan is and what I do is I come down here to the bottom and I cut these plants cut the leaves off around the bottom and I leave that core in there so it can keep continuing to grow vertically now it is possible to come in here and cut the whole plant off I'm going to show you one right here here's one right here I'm going to cut the whole plant see how I cut that whole plant that right there will grow another lettuce and the days ahead that's the one way to harvest it I prefer to come around the bottom and take the leaves off the bottom and leave the middle see how I left the middle now that will continue to grow and it'll get taller intolerance it will get like this tall and it keeps putting on leaves and it's for me it seems that when I just trimmed the bottom and let them grow from the bottom up and trim the bottom they produce a higher yield so that's the way I do it instead of cutting them off like you know right across the whole plant so we're going to go eat some lettuce I appreciate you watching today and if you like her videos I ask you to subscribe to our Channel be a part of our YouTube family so until we see you next time
