[Music] hello everyone this is jack in this video i'll cover everything you need to know how to grow lots of onions first thing you want to make sure is that you have the right planting medium onions like loose swell you can also grow onions on berms however i like to grow my onions in raised beds add compost to your growing medium i also made a video on how you can make your own hot compost check the video out if you're interested i'll leave a link to the video in the description you can also include some commoner or chicken manure in your growing medium to grow onions one tip for growing onions is to know what climate they grow in onions like cool dry season they do not like humidity another tip is to know what type of onions you are growing there are three main types of onions shortly onions long day onions and intermediate day onions short day onions start forming bowls when the daylight reaches 10 to 12 hours these onions are best suited to grow in california and southern states they also grow really well in southern europe northern india and other places in the world that experiences cold but not freezing winters short day onions are planted in fall they grow throughout the winter and they're harvested in spring long day onions begin forming bowls when the day length is 14 to 16 hours per day these onions are best suited to grow in northern states in the us in canada northern europe and other parts of the world that experience really cold winters long day onions are planted in spring and they grow all throughout the summer and they're harvested in fall intermediate day onions start forming bulls when the day length is 12 to 14 hours per day these can be grown anywhere except for areas that are too humid like florida onions can be grown from seeds seedlings or sets i like to grow my onions from seedlings you can buy the seedlings or grow your own it's really easy to sow some seeds and start your own onion seedlings once the onion seedlings are about 6 inches tall they're ready for transplanting make some space in your soil and start planting onions planting space between onions should be 4 inches apart and row spacing should be anywhere from 6 inches to 12 inches apart crowding the onions will produce more onions per smaller bulbs spacing the onions a little bit further produces larger bulbs but fewer onions per space practice crop rotation when growing onions to reduce pests and disease in denmark danish people traditionally grow onions with carrots it is believed that the pests that like carrots don't like onions and vice versa do not over water onions keep the soil moist and water again when the soil begins to dry out onions grow rapidly after just one month onions are about 18 inches to 24 inches tall this is how tall the onion plants will get after this onions will start to form the bulbs another tip to grow big onion bulbs is to snip off any seed pods this will focus the plants energy in growing the bulb rather than making seeds you can also just pull off onions that are bolting or producing seed pods and just eat the onions onions can be harvested at any stage smaller green onions are harvested early on in the life cycle however if you want big onions you must wait for the plant to mature you will know the plant is fully mature when the leaves on the plants are beginning to die when the leaves fall over onions have produced the biggest bulbs they can my onions have been growing for four months if they've become really big it takes about four months for onions to mature i've left quite a few of my onions to maturity and the leaves have fallen back and now it is the time for harvest [Music] let's pull one of the first onions well look at this one i also have some red onions growing i'll check out this fresh red onion looks so delicious i'm harvesting more and more onions and filling up my box these onions are just amazing look at these beautiful onions these onions are amazing i can't wait to eat these onions these onions are really good in burgers tacos salsa and guacamole it is so fulfilling to harvest what you grow it gives you a lot of satisfaction well check out this onion this is a really good bounty well there's a really big onion let me show you this one well look at the size of this one this is a big onion i'm really amazed at the size of this onion well check out the bountiful harvest of all of these onions this is why i love growing my own food this is absolutely amazing i'm going to love snacking on these onions i really hope you enjoyed this video and i'll see you in another video [Music] you
