hey how's it going all you addicts Eric Swanson hear from Eric swamps outdoors welcome to another tutorial series we're gonna be talking about keep research efficient in the winter time stay tuned we're dumped a bunch of great info on you guys go for it [Music] all righty guys so when I'm looking for an acre spot to target sturgeon I'm looking for an e fold you know anywhere from 70 to 100 feet and what I'd like to do is I like to drop anchor above it cuz what will happen is on this outgoing current you want to be above the fish and the current will take the scent of our squid or whatever they were using back to the fish so always anchor above where you think the fish are toss your bait back towards them and that scent trail is gonna bring the fish in so finding a nice deep hole you know say 90 feet I'm gonna go drop anchor in about 70 feet we're gonna be casting our bait back to where we think the fish are now as you guys can see here we're marking the fish kinda right on the backside of this ledge there's all sturgeon laying in camp you can see the bottom starting to rise up a little bit so we'll go through off anchor you know somewhere up and we'll be casting our bait back here on the slant ride with you specially party guys now I thought I found this part I want to anchor in let's go up on the bow and drop anchor so my anchors already all pre-prepared [Applause] what I like to do is just free spool it all the way until it hits the bottom then I'll go back and pop my motor and reverse go back till I get all my line out we'll toss the ball so I hit the bottom let's go pump it reverse so put the motor reverse we're gonna back down [Music] and as you guys can see on the binder here we drop in about 70 feet pull back and we'll be casting our stuff back in the deep stuff so as our anchor rope goes out I like about 20 feet of rope from the ball to the bow of my boat that's how you guys successfully drop anchor or surgeon fishing a really important thing guys for successful sturgeon fishing is keeping your boat as straight as possible so that's where these drifts awesome handy they catch the current pull the back your boat straight so that way you're not swinging around [Music] the next thing we want to talk to you guys about is the proper real rod line and terminal set up to be successful up here I like to run these Okuma guide select classics he's washing my salmon rods what makes this really fun up here is we're reeling in a lot at thirty to thirty five inch fish and the salmon rod every fish fights like a keeper so that's why I like running my salmon rods and just you know really soft and it's a ton of fun next thing guys is the Okuma low pro line counter the cold water I run 65 braid super abrasion resistant that way when we're getting lines wrapped up the you know the fish the sturgeon with the sharp scoots are twisting in the line this doesn't break as easily next thing I like to do guys is I like to run an eight millimeter bumper bead on top of my swivel so that way when we reel up the school doesn't go through the eye of my rod then for my slider let's have a simple barrel swivel with the dual lock snap down to my weight to another eight millimeter bumper bead that's protecting my not from the weight down to a six-speed Bradsby chain and a hundred pound Dacron leader and when the fish spin and twist up in the line this 100 pound helps stop break off next down to a six aught Mustad hook alrighty guys let's talk a little bit about bait you know these fish up here they bite just about everything one of my favorite baits use a squid seems like you know if I catch four or five finish on you know a smelt or herring you know I catch 10 on a squids most of time I run squid until I need to change it from real fight so how I like to rig the squid is a fine one I really like lots of tentacles and you'll see here there's like the spine of the squid right now so there and I take my hook and I run right to that spine what I like to do is connect the head and kind of run it right off the eyeball just like that you want your hook nice and exposed so when you set the hook you get the fish then I like to kind of bury that I just in there like so then I do about four half hitches to keep that bait on there and the sturgeon won't be able to pick it off as easily and it'll lay nice on the bottom just like that always do one right at the end to make sure it lays real nice on the bottom for it just like that another thing I really want to emphasize guys is using the right amount of weight so up here the winds blow and the boats kind of swinging back and forth you have too much weight the weight won't swing with the boat you'll see all your rods kind of get stuck so having just the right amount of led to keep your stuff on the bottom without getting stuck so you have to play around a little bit cast it out there if you you know if it's taking you 300 feet of line and hit the bottom put a little bit heavier weight on but trying to try and perfect how much weight you're using the next really important thing we want to make sure and do that is when we cast that we don't get our stuff all tangled so what you want to do is kind of a long lob slow cast you don't want to do a sharp one everything will get tangled up so I'll show you that right now what I like to do is right before his water put my thumb on the school and slow it down that way everything lays out this and if you watch you can generally tell if your self gets tangled and if it does obviously reel in and recast because the surgeons gonna bite it everything's twisted up once it hits the bottom like to pick the rod tip up and you can see the weight hitting off the bottom perfect go ahead put in a rock check the drag percent already guys so it's really important that when you're getting the bite that you're really gentle with the rod so the bite is gonna look something like this really subtle you look these a big fish bite very soft will suffer like that and what you want to do that's why I really like them small be juniors just lift the rod out of the rod holder and what you do not want to do don't want to lift the right foot up because that sturgeon is gonna fuel it and it's gonna drop it so you get the bite the proper way to do it lift it out real gently keep the rod tip down you'll feel that surgery go cap cap cap and generally I like to set the hook on the third good cap you know single cap cap get your watch up right next to the water and when you feel that good third just swing as hard as you can reel down on them you'll get them almost every time great [Music] alrighty guys so Oh as you can see it's a little better fish but Jim did a great job of picking out of the rod holder keeping the rod tip low and on that third good tug swung too hard and I'd stuck the fish so we'll see if it's uh we'll see if its keeper now talking a little harder than the fish before so I think we've caught about fifteen shakers now we're at we're due for a keeper now we'll see who's gonna tire out first Jim burr the fish it's really important guys when you're fighting these fish always keep a nice bend in the rod you don't really want to give him slack who's using eight ounces and you started dropping the rod tip it started causing that lead to drop you could pull that hook out of the fish's mouth so kids doing a real good job here doing a nice pump and then he's reeling faster than he's letting down and it's keeping a good bend in the rod which was a result in a landed fish almost a jumper so this is a sub legal fish also known as a as a shaker did a pretty good job of sucking that squid down but that's a Columbia River white sturgeon it's the baby so we'll send them back [Music] highly doubt it but the other one go go that's definitely the better fish [Music] oh hey 34 inches you have to be 38 we kept this nice healthy fish guys all righty guys another cool thing you can do is you know if the fight slows down you want to change it up using some of the pro here bait oils in an injector it can really work well what we'll do is we'll take our squid I'll ring it up on here kind of come right up to the eyeball bear that up do your three or four or five half hitches on there just like that then you take your injector with you know you can anchovy herring basically any fish oil will work I like this probe but juice seems to work roll up he has a lot of anise in it take our injector stop it I like to put a nice little to eat right on the outside just like that there's a Rocket Center for about 15 to 20 minutes on the tougher days when the fish don't want to bite or you know the bite stops this can really help get them going again so always have your procure self have have your injector injecting your bait allows the bait through you know the scent to leech out a lot slower doesn't just wash out off the outside [Music] one last little tidbit for you guys is when you're fishing a stacker rods like we are here with five one thing I really like to do is you know stagger them in the bowl because some days the sturgeon don't really want to move around too much so when I have five rods here I'll run the back one really poor out there these back corner rods you know not quite as far as the back rods you know about seventy five eighty feet and then these pop rods haha them pretty close to the boat that way we get a smack salome coverage on the hole it's possible drop the comment below if you guys have ever disturbing fish you guys want to get out and stir the fish or if you have any tips of your own please like this video share it subscribe to our Channel see you guys on the water [Music] you
