How To Find a Ski in Powder - Skiing Tips and Lessons

[Music] damn lost a ski now if you've ever lost a skiing powder you'll know how annoying it is and if you are skiing powder it's probably the best day of your holiday now you better hope your friends like you because not only going to be wasting your time but also theirs but there are some ways to make this easier and more importantly quick quicker now the first thing is you really want to treat this area like a crime scene the last thing you want is everybody coming in and going over the tracks you've left because there's a lot of Clues there the other thing that can happen is that they will actually push the ski deeper into the snow so leave this area untracked because there's some hidden Clues there then I can take my ski off put that somewhere safe in the snow last thing you want to do is lose another one while you're looking for it and if you are off pieced you should have your Avalanche kit with you and we're going to use your probe and maybe your shovel to make it easier to find that ski I can get everything ready first thing to do is try and go through in your head exactly what happened you may remember or feel the ski actually coming off and in which part of the turn that happened so looking back I've got a vague memory that I remember that ski coming off right in that turn and I think it came off about there now if you don't have a probe you can use the ski poles and start with just use a bit of visual look you might even see a little bit of the ski poking out of the snow but I've got the probe out so I'm going to use that it's going to give me a much bigger arm all right so if you got one of these in the bag you may as well use it now I'm actually going to start probing through the snow pack like this and that's going to cover much more terrain than if I was just probing down and if you've got a few people on the sides they can start coming up and if you haven't disrupted that snow pack you should feel anything in there that's going to be hard like a ski and we'll lead you straight to that without messing around for too long I think I felt something there so I'm definitely feeling something in there I can grab the shovel and you will feel and hear a definite difference when you're hitting something hard like a ski than when you're hitting the ground yeah definitely getting that so I can get my shovel so I'm going to leave that probe on what I think is a ski I can start digging oh felt something there there she is my ski perfect now I can just pack up and I'm on my way again and that took about 5 minutes rather than an hour and five minutes now if you follow that procedure not only will it save you some time but it'll probably save you a very expensive round at the bar buying a beer for all your friends that rolled around in the snow snow for an hour and if you really can't find it in that area maybe look below sometimes the ski can torpedo under that snow and it may even disrupt the surface slightly now take your time survey the area use the equipment you've got and you'll be back in the powder in no time at all [Music]
