How to evenly space anything

all right this is how you make even spacing you can use this on all kinds of stuff fences staircases birthday candles anything is how you evenly spaced an area I've got these two start pieces and we're gonna call these posts and I'm going to call these pickets we're gonna pretend we're making a picket fence it seems easy I got five pickets I got two posts and you think you would just divide the space you know I got six spaces I'll just divide the measurement by six so I take the measurement and I have twenty inches here I divide it by six and then I install my pickets and they look pretty good and so you step back and look at them and you see you've got a big one on the end that's almost three inches and then you got two and a quarter for the rest of them and then you've got three inches here it doesn't matter how many pickets you have or how big your space is you're always gonna end up with a screw size at the end and if you drive around town and look at people's fences they're all like this they all have this weird spacing on the end and that's not how you do it this is how I do it there's a lot of different ways to do it this is a simple and foolproof and you can see it happen rather than play the calculator and hope it happens so again it doesn't matter how big the space is between your posts and it doesn't matter how many pickets you could have three picots you could have 500 pickets system this works no matter what the dimensioning is you gonna take all your pickets in my case I have five pickets and you just tie them together and you put them against one of your posts now you're gonna count how many spaces between the pickets so I got one two three four five and what a lot of people forget is that this is a space too so I have six spaces overall I push them tight I take a measurement of what's left and I had 15 inches there and have six spaces so what I do is I divide the 15 by the amount of spaces 15 divided by 6 is two and a half inches now you can cut yourself a block to whatever you come out with you can use a tape measure it doesn't matter I'm just gonna I'm doing this because it's easier to show you on the camera and you start installing your pickets and what happens because you end up with perfect spacing post to post and that's the way it's supposed to look and there you go perfect spacing every single time it's quick and easy now if your if your posts aren't plumb if they're out of level so say that the measurement at the top of the post is different than the measurement at the bottom of the post you can do the exact same trick you can stack up all your pieces and you can measure the top and the bottom and you end up with two different measurements and you just write top on this block and bottom on the other block and it will fan the pickets perfectly every single time and it works like a charm and you can't even see that you're out of plumb you don't end up with like a weird trapezoid on one end it's a good trick
