here friends Terry and Josh snake yeah we're gonna draw a garter snake we hope you're gonna follow along we've actually seen one of these in our yard yeah it was really cool look what we found a little Jack found came out of nowhere little snakes it looked like it was in the grass you need your drawing supplies and we're using markers but you could use whatever you have at home or in the classroom you also need some paper and something to go with yeah you ready to start yes because we're using markers to draw and color with we're also using marker paper to draw on but if you're using regular colored pencils or something else you could just use regular paper yeah let's first start by drawing our snake's head and I'm going to draw over here we're going to draw a little flat line like this just a diagonal flat line yeah and then we're going to draw the head shape coming out from that flat line and then we're going to curve right at the end and we're going to try to match that same shape over here for the other side of the head of a simple way to draw a little snake head then we're going to draw two lines coming out what do you think this is for uh the tongue yeah the tongue and snakes have little splits in their tongue so we're going to draw a little V to connect the end of the tongue yeah okay now let's draw the eyes we're just going to draw a little oval here and a little oval over here now for the really fun part we're going to draw the body and we're going to draw winding around so first let's start here we're going to draw curving this way and you could really change your snake to curve any way you want you don't have to do it exactly like us so I'm going to curve down and maybe I'll stop there for for now do not want to go too far because we also need to draw the other side of the body yeah we don't want to overlap too much so let's start here and then we're going to try to match the same curve and keep the same distance all the way around oh this is a pretty thick garter snake there we go I'm gonna stop right when I get about here now because we only Drew part of the snake that way we can come this way now and we can actually curve around and watch this we can get close to this side of the body so then I'm going to stop here and then it will extend or continue the other side so come back and catch the other side up to where it really stops yeah okay let's keep going I'm gonna do another one see how I'm gonna get close here and then I'm gonna come way out like this and then maybe we'll stop like that oh you're doing such a good job okay now let's come back here and we'll continue the other side and because now we're drawing the tail we want to start getting closer to the other side until we get really close and finally into the point at the very end yes we did it there's our garter snake that's a pretty simple way to draw a cool snake yeah and I better our friends can memorize those steps so they could draw lots of snakes you could add even another one right next to this one we finished using our black marker let's pick out the colors for our snake next we're using our art for kids Hub markers if you have the same set the colors that we're using are 26 yellow this is really light yellow also 11 red and cg9 which is a really dark cool gray yeah and it don't worry if you don't have these exact colors you can use other art supplies something completely different like colored pencils so let's first start with our light yellow this is number 26 I'm actually gonna use the Chisel Edge we're going to go all the way around our snake right down the middle this part we might speed up or if we go too fast during any part of the lesson you can always pause the video next let's use the same color and we're going to add another stripe just right along the side of the body and because this is a light marker if you get really close to the black marker it might smear the black or bleed so I try to just be really careful not to go over the black line too much to pick up that color then when you get down to the tail I'm actually going to stop so that we have because we'll just get too close to the middle and it will just look yellow then I'm going to come back over to the where the head starts and I'm going to draw another stripe on the other side of the body then I'm also adding yellow to the side of the head we go through the eye and we'll do that on both sides oh and we can also do it a little bit across the front of the head and on the other side of the head now the type of garter snake that we're drawing or and coloring we're going to add little red stripes all the way down the side in between the yellow stripes so I'm going to start here next to the neck and I'm going to add it right here and we'll just add a little stripe like this we can just go back and forth and make it look natural and then follow the shape of the body going all the way down to the tail there are all different types of garter snakes and some of them are brown some some look a little more black and some don't have as strong of this red texture and some have a lot of red yeah and I even looked up and saw that there is a California garter snake and it has blue like really bright blue and red and that's a really fun snake to draw or color that would be really cool to do this lesson all over again and do that one let's speed things up and we'll finish the stripes on both sides of our snake now we're ready to switch to our dark gray this is cg9 and we're going to color in the rest of our snake so we're going to color in between the yellow stripes and also the red little spots and let's fast forward again so remember to pause the video and take that extra time to color in your snakes the way that we're coloring it is actually really tricky and I'm just realizing that if you want to color let's try something a little different you want to color your entire snake solid with this dark gray and then we'll use colored pencils to color on top to add those stripes back in do you want to try that yeah okay that was a lot easier huh yeah okay now let's add the little stripe back in you can use a white prismacolor colored pencil and start right here just like we did with the yellow and you can add this back in right down the middle of your snake all the way down to the tail oh let's sharpen it first I think I'm also going to simplify my snake by coloring in the side stripe so that there's only one yellow stripe right down the back that's the part that you really want to see is the single stripe going all the way down the snake this looks really cool too but I think I I just want to change it so that it's a little easier and simpler to make oh yeah now that looks a lot more like a garter snake yours too Austin you're doing a great job keep going then you can also use a red color pencil to add the red stripes back in it won't be as bright as mine but that's okay it's still looking really cool and you could also use that red colored pencil for the tongue while you're adding those red stripes back in I'm going to use my cg1 to add a little Shadow underneath our snake to make him look more 3D and I'm just going to draw on the bottom side of the snake so we'll come up here and then we'll get a little thinner right here and then I'm going to add a thicker Shadow up here so just on one side of the snake this will make the snake look like it's laying on top of my paper I'm going to add a little curve right here and then we'll color this in to add that shadow down here at the bottom [Music] so we did it color in our garter snake and yours turned out so cool thank you I especially love that you colored yours differently our friends could do the same thing I think it was a little easier to color the whole snake solid and then add the stripe after yeah and you could also change your snake any way you want you could color it completely different I think if you want to draw a garter snake the most important part is to get that little white or yellow stripe down the middle of your snake all the way from the head down to the tail yeah you could also add what would you add for your background lots of grass yeah these like to hang out in the grass in our backyard and also you could add rocks you could also add maybe sticks and some other cool things you would find on the ground yeah we will be a lot of fun drawing a garter snake we do we hope you had a lot of fun and we'll see you later our friends goodbye [Music]
