drawing this holiday mousse is easier than you think and i'm going to show you exactly how you can do it no matter your skill level hello wonderful people it's genevieve and my goal here on this channel is to teach you all about illustration and design so if you're new make sure to subscribe so you don't miss any of the videos and so that you can join our wonderful creative community and with that said grab your drawing tools and let's get started [Music] so as usual i'm going to be drawing in an app called procreate but feel free to follow along with any digital art software are your choice as long as you have layers you should be all okay for reference these are the dimension of the canvas that i will be using it is literally just the size of the ipad screen but make sure you find something that works for your own project requirements now if you're not exactly sure how to pick it in this size i have a video in which i teach you everything you need to know in order to make your decision so i will link that in description below i get a lot of questions about how to get the little image um in the top left corner it's simply if you go in the wrench icon menu at the top of your appropriate menu in the canvas section you're gonna have this reference option here that you can activate and it's gonna let you import a picture so that's that's the way to do it and then you can just put it wherever you want on your screen now if you want to have my illustration as a reference you can get it it is linked in description below that being said we're going to start very simply which is a super super rough sketch so go ahead and create a new layer rename it to sketch and for the color of the sketch you can pick whatever you want we're not going to see it in the final result so it doesn't matter i like to just sketch with a basic neutral gray and in this video i'm always going to be suggesting two different kind of brushes one is going to be a free brush that comes with procreate and it's going to allow you to follow along just fine and the other brush is going to be a brush from my ultimate illustration bundle now these brushes they're not essential don't worry if you don't have them that's okay but if you have them they can help you save some time and get more professional results overall if you want to check them out they will be in the description below and there's always a special chrome account for youtube people and there may or may not be a giveaway later in this video so stay tuned for that that being said again you can pick whatever brush you want you can still follow along with free brushes for the sketch since we're not going to see it in final result just pick a brush are you comfortable with a good option that comes with procreate could be in the sketching panel the hb pencil otherwise if you have the illustration bundle go ahead and pick the sketching brush and here we're going to start by drawing the most basic shapes possible so kind of deconstructing the character and then going back in and reconstructing it so for that we're going to start with just drawing the baseline on which the character is standing in the tree as well so you know nothing crazy here just a horizontal line and then once that is done we are going to roughly map out the direction and the position of our character so here since it's standing upright we're just going to draw a vertical line and here a character is made of two main big shapes the body is going to be this kind of egg shape slightly up for the ground so we have room for the legs and then the other main big shape is going to be a rounded rectangle for the head so just above your egg shape you're going to draw this rounded rectangle and the part where the nose is so the part further away from the egg is going to be a little bit thicker and roughly this rectangle is going to be the same length as the height of the egg roughly once that is done you can draw some little ovals for the leg so one should be in line with the vertical line on which you have the character and the other one is going to be kind of curved like this it's kind of a bean shape more than an oval the second one because our character is kind of you know just standing on one leg and just being all cheerful and in the holiday spirit now having that we might want to go ahead and sketch our tree just so we know where to put the arms so the tree is just going to be this rounded triangle shape with a little rectangle for the base like this super simple nothing more complicated than that for now but it does give us an idea of where to put the other elements especially the arms but for the arms though you might want to go ahead and add a little ear so just a kind of you know triangle like this on the side of the head as well as just mapping out where the antlers are going to be so for that you can start with just two simple lines and then you can draw what i like to call it's either like an f or an e i should say an e shape sideways but to me it looks more like a very big wide tooth comb so yeah it's a very simple shape you can see you're basically just drawing kind of three little mountains on top of your baseline and then you connect it together and it looks like antlers you can also add some little hooves so for that i just draw kind of small triangles at the bottom of the legs and we are going to be ready to add the arms as well so the arms are just going to be little crescent moon shapes one is reaching towards the tree and the other one is uh kind of in the back of the moose once you have your crescent moon shapes arms you can go ahead and add the hooves for the hands so again just kind of rounded triangles we're also going to be drawing some ellipses one for the eye so in line with the ear somewhere like that and then two big ones for the nostrils pretty big nostrils i know but i think it looks really really cute we're also going to draw this kind of a bump i guess towards the bottom of the head which is going to become the smile later as well but for now it just looks like a big bump and we're going to finish it off with a little tail on our moose's derriere so for now this is a good enough base for a rough sketch but if you're like me it might not be in the center of the canvas so if that's the case you can always use the arrow tool in procreate and just put it where you want it to be in the final final piece now we're going to clean up our sketch so for that you can draw on the same sketch layer with a darker color i personally like to create a new layer rename it to clean sketch and then go back and lower the opacity of my base sketch quite a lot until i can just barely see it now again you can do it on one layer and if you're drawing on paper you would just draw you know just more strongly so that your new strokes are darker than the previous ones and here we're sticking with the same brush and either the same color or darker version of your gray and we're simply going to go back and pick which lines we want to use so when we did the rough sketch we went with super basic shapes and we roughly sketched them in and that created a bunch of different lines so now we're just going back picking the ones that we want to use for the final illustration and adding any other kind of detail or element we want to have so for example on a rough sketch i did not sketch a shirt it was just kind of the basic body shape so here in this clean sketch i'm adding this turtleneck situation as well as the bottom of the shirt so it looks like a shirt you know and here for example i was telling you earlier that this little bump was going to turn into a smile so to turn it into a smile i'm just adding the corner of the mouth so super simple so go ahead and here take all the time you need in order to find your lines this is not a super complicated step because you already have the base sketch underneath honestly the base sketch is probably the hardest part of my tutorials so if you made it this far you're good you can keep doing it and you're gonna get a good result at the end but yeah take all the time you need here to draw a clean sketch that you like because if you're not happy with your clean sketch it's gonna be really really hard to make it look better when adding the color so make sure you're happy with clean sketch before moving on now while you're working on that let's talk a little bit more about the giveaway so in this video the prize is going to be the ultimate illustration bundle which is the one i was telling you about and which is the one that includes the brush that i've been using so far so i'm going to pick one winner i'm gonna announce it on my instagram story on the date that i'm gonna write on the screen right here and the way to enter is really easy if you've watched my videos before you know that at one point in the video there's going to be a secret password and if you're new on the channel don't worry it's just at one point in the video on the screen and i'm gonna say it as well there's going to be a secret word that you're gonna have to write in the comments this is the way to enter but be careful though in order to enter the giveaway you need to write this record password both on youtube so in the comments on this video as well as on instagram on the post that is going to look a little bit like this so keep an eye out for the secret password but for now we're going to keep going on this clean sketch layer you might want to add some extra decorations so that could be some garlands on a trees as well as some little ornaments so just basic little circles of different size i like to have one of the ornaments on my moose's hand i mean who's it's not really holding it but it looks like it and i also like to add some ornaments on the antlers it's just funny i think so drawing a few lines that make it feel like there's a string wrapped around the antlers and then drawing vertical lines that fall from the antlers on which you can then attach some extra little ornaments so something super simple like this and you can also add little bows on top of the knots [Music] and with our sketch ready we're ready to start adding the colors so for that you can either work with only the clean sketch so hiding the base sketch layer or you can combine both which is what i like to do i just think having the construction lines really helpful for shading and everything so if you want to merge your layers together in procreate you can just use two fingers and squish them together now i like to use the blending mode multiply and load opacity of my sketch that way the sketch is not too much in the way when we're drawing but using multiply we're still going to see it well on darker colors so it's a good combination and we're also going to be creating a new layer that we're going to put below the sketch and we're going to rename this layer to mousse and here all we're going to do is a basic silhouette of the mousse so just a solid shape and in terms of color you can use really any color of your choice and i really encourage you to try and pick them yourself that being said if you just want to use the same ones as i am using this color palette is available it's free and it's linked in description below for the brown you can see i'm just going with a pretty neutral brown which is pretty much in the middle of the color picker and for the brush you're going to want to pick a brush that is super basic like a hard brush in the airbrushing panel making sure that you lift the opacity back to 100 if you're watching my watercolor videos or if you're using the illustration bundle you can pick the base round brush if you're working with a different software just pick the most basic round brush you can find inhale are you going to be doing is drawing the outline of everything that is going to be brown in the end so you don't really have to worry about doing the shirt like i was doing there just going to stop somewhere within the shirt and kind of close your shape so that the legs are fully closed so something a little bit like this and then you can move on to the the head now the key here is you want to make sure that your shapes are fully closed so that we can fill them in later you also want to make sure that they are smooth so these outlines here you're much better trying to draw them in one stroke and undoing if you don't like the stroke is to erase a little section and start over that way when you erase sometimes you get bumpy strokes and the flow is not there but if you do draw one stroke and then undo until you get it right you're gonna get a better flow overall once you have your shape just fill them in with your brown so you have your basic silhouette now we're going to repeat this technique with all the other shapes and the main colors so we're going to create a new layer this one is going to be below the mousse and then with this one we're going to draw the antlers so you can rename it to endless now here i'm going to go with a lighter version of my base brown so you could just make it lighter yourself or pick it in the color palette and here same thing you're just going to draw the outline super simple and then filling them in now one thing that i really like about creating basic silhouettes before adding all the details and everything is you can kind of double check that your sketch looks good so when you have blocks of colors as opposed to just sketch line your illustration is going to look quite different so if you notice that like a shape is not exactly how you want it to be or if you notice that you forgot a shape like the ear in my case make sure that you go back and tweak that until you're super happy with your silhouettes we're going to create a new layer above the mousse this time we're going to rename it to sweater and for the sweater i'm gonna go with this kind of turquoise color but seriously for now just pick whatever color i'm gonna show you a trick later to change it very quickly and easily so if you want to create your own color palette this silhouette technique is also really really cool because you can start with just super basic colors that are roughly what you think you might want to use and once they're all mapped out you can go back and play with them until you have a color palette that you like so i know building color palettes can be really hard at least i struggle with it i think it's tricky but if you start and start building your illustrations and use separate layers and later go back and tweet the colors i think it's a better way to do it because you get to actually see what's happening with your color palette as opposed to having to figure it out beforehand so for the sweater same thing you're just outlining it and then filling in the color and we're going to do the same thing with the hooves as well so just creating a new layer above the sweater layer picking a super super dark version of our base brown and then outlining and filling in those so in order to have a really nicely organized file we're going to group all the mousse layers together before adding even more so for that we're going to just swipe the layers towards the right with one finger then click the group option at the top we're also going to be able to rename the group so we're going to rename it to moose and you can collapse it by tapping on the little arrow on the right once that is done go ahead and create a new layer put it below the moose group and this one we're going to rename it to tree so we're going to do the same techniques of the silhouette technique but just for the tree so i'm going to go with a super vibrant green but again feel free to pick any color of your choice and later i'm going to show you how to change it so you get a nicer color palette so same thing here you just outline your tree and then you fill it in we're also going to be adding the trunk so for the trunk i'm using the same color as the mousse so that it's coherent and it's a nice color palette so for that you can just color pick by holding your finger on the moose color or you can go back in your color history then same thing you outline the trunk and you fill it in now i'm going to draw the decorations on a separate layer so that i can change the color later if i want so you can feel free to do the same or draw them directly on the tree layer so i'm just going to create a new layer above the tree rename it to garlands and here i'm going to go with super pale like silverish garlands so this kind of super pale gray i guess and same technique outlining the garlands and then filling them in [Music] and you probably know what i'm about to say we are going to create a new layer this one is going to be above the moose group and this one is going to be for all of the ornaments so we're going to rename it to ornaments and you can pick whatever color you want again i'm going to go with a bright red but feel free to just pick a random one and tweak it later i'm going to show you how in just a second now this is a really cool feature in procreate if you draw a basic shape like a circle or a square or triangle if you hold your pencil on the screen it's going to kind of smooth the shape and if you're drawing an ellipse like we are right now you can hold your pencil and also tap on the screen with the secondary finger and that's going to create a perfect circle so you can use that to create your ornaments so just drawing a really quick ellipse hold your pencil tap with another finger and it's going to turn it into a perfect circle that you can then fill in awesome so now that we have all the basic slots mapped out it's really easy to go back in and tweak the colors until we get a coherent color palette that we're happy with so i'm going to show you the example with sweater because that was the main one i was telling you about so you can go back and select your sweater layer like this there we go and if you go in the adjustment panel here at the top you can pick hue saturation brightness for the entire layer now it's going to open up the sliders here at the bottom which are going to allow you to change the color so if you use the hue this is going to change the kind of color then the saturation is going to change how intense and vibrant the color is and the brightness is going to change the like the darkness or the lightness of the color so you can that way create a super nice color palette that you like by actually seeing what happens when you change the color as opposed to having to just guess so i'm going to keep the sweater as is because i like it but you could go ahead and change all the different silhouettes play with all of them until you get something that you like overhaul now i'm also going to be adding some secondary colors on the mousse mainly some white around the belly and the face so for that you're going to create a new layer above the mousse layer and we're going to apply it as a clipping mask i'm going to show you how in just a second but for now we're going to rename it to white so if you tap on this layer you're going to have the menu option here the the layer menu i should say and you're going to be able to activate clipping mask just tapping on it which is going to create this little arrow next to the layer now we are going to pick a i said white but it's more of a cream color so a super super super light version of our basic brown and the reason for that is if we use pure white we're not going to be able to add highlights later which would be very very sad in terms of brushes we're going to go with something that has a bit more texture so from the sketching panel you could use the 6b pencil otherwise if you have the illustration bundle go ahead and pick the outlines brush and here we're simply going to do kind of a silhouette but this time it's going to be within the shape of the mousse and the reason we activated the clipping mask is so that we don't have to worry about staying within the mousse shape you can see here now everything we draw on this white layer which is actually cream it's going to stay within the moose silhouette because we applied it as a clipping mask so that way you can quickly go in and add a little bit of a white belly a little bit of a white bottom part for the ear as well as kind of a curvy i don't know mountain over the eye on the face so something a little bit like this and here it's really a personal preference but i also like to add some straight lines around my secondary colors like the white patches like this i just think for animals it looks cool it looks like it's a bit more fur and not just like a straight clear clean cut and the last little thing we're going to do before adding the details and the shading is we're going to add a color in the background so it could be a shape or just a solid full on background i'm going to draw a shape so for that go ahead and create a new layer put it below the tree rename it to background shape and you can pick really any color of your choice here the idea of having a color is so that the garlands and the secondary color on the moose pop more so i'm going to go with this super super light blue and here again you can fill in the entire background or draw some sort of an organic shape the main purpose again here is just so that we can have a little bit more contrast between the garlands the background and the like cream color on the mousse and you can also use the arrow tool here at the top setting it to either uniform or distort to change the orientation size of your background shape until you really like where it is [Music] at this stage we're ready to start adding details and outlines to make this illustration a little bit more interesting so for that you can go back in your mousse group and above the hoops create a new layer that we're going to rename to details so here we're going to draw all of the details in one solid color and later we're going to recolor them that being said if you want to have black outlines well just go ahead and pick black but i like to have colored outlines so i'm going to pick a darker version of my base brown color and with the same brush so either the 6b pencil or the outline brush we are going to well outline everything so here it's a very simple step it might take a little bit of time and that's totally okay because you want to make sure that your outlines and details are really really smooth and they flow nicely so kind of like when we're creating these silhouettes if your stroke is not super nice if it's not exactly how you want it to be you're much better instead of erasing to undo and redo your stroke in one nice flowy movement then again just trying to erase and then do it like a little bit by little bit so here take really all the time you need and outline everything in your uh what are we drawing in their mousse sorry guys i'm getting a little bit tired i think so the mousse itself the antlers the sweater everything you're not gonna draw the tree and the decorations yet because it's gonna be a separate layer but everything that is the mousse you're going to draw and with that it is time for the secret password so if you've watched this far please go ahead and leave a comment with the color you used for your sweater so in my case it would be teal or turquoise i should say and if you want to enter the giveaway don't forget to both leave the comment here on youtube as well as on instagram on the post that is going to have a v moose on it now if you're new on the channel you might be like what's the deal with the secret password well it does a few things mainly when we're drawing doing giveaways you know it allows you to enter the giveaway but even without that it does a few really cool things one of them is it gives me a lot insight into how to edit and paste my videos better which helps me to create better tutorials for you guys which is what we all want in the end but it's also really cool because you guys know me you see my face in the intro you hear my voice throughout the entire video but i have no idea who you guys are and whenever you leave a comment i get to see sometimes your name sometimes your face and it's just really cool to see who's part of the community that we're building here on this channel so just leave a comment with the color you used for your sweater and if you want to enter the giveaway make sure to leave this comment on instagram as well and then we're going to keep going so we're just going to keep drawing our outlines and you can see here i also like to add on this layer little dots while little short lines to kind of show that it's first so just groups of two or three little lines that's you know a tiny little detail that i like to do we're also going to be drawing details for the tree so just creating a new layer above the garlands layer and renaming it to tree details here we're going to go with a darker version of our tree color and we're going to outline everything that is tree but also garland so we're going to do this all on that one layer and later we are going to recolor the outlines so that they match the garlands as well and not just a tray and here feel free to add some little spirals or curved line on the trunk to add a little bit more texture small details like that that are going to make your piece feel more interesting overall and the last little details and outline we're going to do are for the ornaments you probably guessed it so we're going to create a new layer above the ornaments layer rename it to ornaments detail and this side we're going to pick a darker version of the red that we use for the ornaments or any other color and you guessed it you're just going to go over and outline the ornaments here you can see i'm not using the perfect circle technique i like my ornaments to not be perfectly circular but having the perfect circle as a guide is really helpful so you have a perfect circle base but then you go over and kind of manually add a little bit more uh what could i say like a rawness i guess to your illustration so it doesn't like it doesn't feel like it's a clip art or something like that so do all the ornaments including those that are on the antlers and you're also going to be drawing the little strings so here just a straight line that connects to the antler as well as a little bow on top of the ornament do now before we move on to adding the or recoloring i should say the outlines and the details we're going to draw the eye so for that go back in the mousse group and create a new layer above the details and rename it to i now you could draw the eye on the details layer but i'm going to show you why i separate it and for that we're going to use just a pure white by the way and you're just going to draw the oval that you're then going to fill in we can barely see it right now because it's on the cream color but we're going to change that in just a few seconds so fill in your white for some reason i'm really struggling there we go and once you have your eye we're going to go ahead and create a new layer yes a separate layer we're going to apply it as a clipping mask and this one is going to be for the iris now we are going to pick a super super super dark brown i'm going with the same one i use for the whos just so it's coherent and then you can go ahead and just you know draw your your iris pupa whatever that would be since it's just one i guess we'll call it iris but the beauty of having it on the separate layer with clipping mask is that if you use the arrow tool you can then move it around and it's always going to stay within the base eye shape but it's going to allow you to change the direction of the like where your character is looking which can be really handy we're also going to create a new layer applying it as a clipping mask as well and using the blending mode linear burn this one is going to be for the shadow where we're going to add the shadow in the eye that sounds strange but that's what we're going to do and for that you can pick really any color of your choice i recommend just trying to avoid using neutral grays so i always use a gray dye as a little bit of purple in it i think it just looks a bit better than neutral gray which ends up looking muddy and you're gonna draw a kind of a shadow on the top half of your eye and then you can play with opacity so that it's not quite as intense so maybe putting at 40 or something like that we're also going to create a new layer for the light so it's also going to be a clipping mask and this one we're going to use the blending mode add which we're going to set right now around 40 50 it really doesn't have to be super precise and here we're going to use a super super bright yellow orange color and we're just going to draw this little oval on the eye which is going to really make it pop and the last thing we're going to do for the eyes is we're actually going to outline it so it doesn't look as crazy as it does right now so just creating a new layer this one is not a clipping mask you're going to rename it to eye details and you're going to go back to the super dark brown that you use for the hooves you might want to decrease the size of your brush and here you're going to outline the eye so that we can actually see it now in terms of eyes usually i like to outline the top outer edge and kind of lead the front bottom open that's a personal preference you could outline everything but i just feel like this is part of my style i guess so if you want to do that feel free to do it as well and at this stage feel free to hide the sketch layer just to double check that all your outlines are fine and if you're happy with them you can group your eye layer to create a new eye group within your mouse group so just selecting all your eye layer and then creating this group and the beauty of having all the eye layers in one group is that you can use the error tool to put the eye wherever you want it to be because the position of the eye is super super important so that way having them all separate is going to allow you to just move them around quickly and if you have a few layers that you can use in procreate because procreate does limit the amount of layers you can use within the canvas you can always just tap on your group and flatten it which is going to combine all of the layers for the eye in one eye layer anyway once that is done we're going to swipe the details layer with two fingers towards the right which is going to activate alpha lock you can also manually activate alpha lock by tapping on the details layer and activating it in the menu now everything we draw on the details layer is going to stay within the outlines that we already have drawn before so that way we're going to be able to pick colors and recolor the outlines so the color that we have for the outlines right now is already good for the mousse but we're going to recolor the antlers so you can color pick the color of the antlers and make it darker or if you go in the color palette you can just pick the brown that is right next to the base antlers color so to the right of it it is a darker version of it and you can just quickly as you can see here brush over your outlines to recolor them so that's a really quick technique to go back once you have all your outlines once you know you're happy with your color palette you can just brush over them to recolor them so we're going to do the same thing with the sweater the hooves and all the other outlines that we have so same technique just color picking or going back in the color palette and making your color darker if you go in the color palette every color that is a base color if you look to the right of it there should be a darker version of it that you can use for the outline so i made it as easy as possible for you guys that being said you know making a color darker is quite easy as well so if you're using your own color palette which i encourage you to do it's quite easy to just make your color darker so doing it on the hooves the sweater i think that's pretty much it for the moose i keep forgetting the name of this animal it's not a good thing because that's what we're drawing on um oh and yeah i realized i did not outline this hoove so you can always deactivate half a lock by just swiping it with two fingers towards the right so activating it and deactivating it is the same so you're going to need to deactivate it if you want to add anything so you can sketch anything that you're missing and also i'm going to go ahead and pick the red that i used for the ornaments make it super super light so i have a nice pink and i'm going to add a little bit of a rosy cheek to my character to make it feel like it's wintry and cold so we're going to do the same thing we're going to recolor the outlines on the tree as well so just swiping the tree details layer with two fingers towards the right to activate alpha lock and then picking a darker version of our garland color so no matter what your color is you just make it a little bit darker and then you just brush over your outlines and details and on the tree layer don't forget to recolor the trunk as well such as taking a darker version of your base brown and brushing it over the tree or the trunk [Music] and we're also going to do the same thing on the little strings here that we have on the ornaments although you could keep them dark red sorry my voice is getting um it's going away i'll try to finish this tutorial hopefully you can still hear me but yeah you're going to do the same thing on the strings for the ornaments here i'm just going to go with pure black and just recoloring the strings not the outlines for the ornaments themselves and at this stage we're almost ready to start shading to really bring this illustration to life but first we might want to add some little lights on the antlers while on the little strings so creating a new layer rename it to lights and going back to the blending mode add this time we're going to keep it at 100 and we're going to go back to picking our super super bright yellow orange color and with the same brush honestly you might may even make it a little bit lighter and you could go with a different color you could go with red lights or green lights or even outstanding multicolor lights seriously here feel free to do whatever you want but basically you're just going to draw these little dots around the strings which is going to look like light in a few seconds when we add a little bit of a glow around it but for now just focus about drawing the basic shapes and in order to add a glow once you have your basic little lights drawn all you have to do is duplicate this light layer so just swiping it towards the left with one finger clicking duplicate and then you're going to go in the adjustment panel you're going to pick gaussian blur you're going to apply it to the entire layer and with your finger you're going to be able to increase the blur by swiping towards the right on your screen or decreasing it by swiping towards the left so you can see you have a little number on the top i'm gonna put mine around six percent but you can see it just adds a little bit of a nice glow around your lights making them look like lights and not just little white dots i guess [Music] okay so let's bring this illustration to life shall we so we're going to start with some super basic shading and i know shading can be intimidating but don't worry we're going to make it as easy as possible so for that we're going to go back to picking the purplish gray that we used for the eyes and on a scrap layer so just a random layer that doesn't have any name or anything we're going to draw a light source so just a basic little circles as well as some little lines that are going to represent where the light is hitting our character so you can put your light source wherever you want i'm going to put it on the top right as you can see here now with that it's going to be super easy to start shading because we're going to be able to just follow the shadows uh follow the rays i should say to add the shadows so we are going to start with cast shadows and we're going to start on the mousse so we are going to create a new layer and i like to create it above the details so that i can shade my details as well but you could put it below if you wanted we're going to rename this layer to shadows and we're going to use the blending mode linear burn for now we're going to set the opacity around 30 but we can always tweak it later and in terms of brushes you can stick with the 6b pencil in the sketching panel otherwise if you have the illustration bundle go ahead and pick either the shader or the basic texture it's really a question of a personal preference i like the basic texture brush i think it's a little bit more precise and for an illustration that is more complicated like this you might want to have a bit of precision so for cast shadows all you have to do is start from your light source follow array and see when the ray hits an object or a limb or something like that for example here the ray hits the arm which means the arm will cast a shadow on the body so you can just draw a shadow that follows the shape of the object that is casting it you can also see that the ray hits the shirt so the shirt would be casting a shadow on the body you can see that the body is casting a shadow on the tail and so forth so you just follow all the rays and see when they hit an object or a part of the body that is in front another of another one and then you draw your cast shadows that way now i encourage you to try and place your shadows yourself but if you're new to illustration and this is a little bit too advanced for you feel free to just copy the placement of my shadows that's totally okay that's what tutorials are for i just want you to learn and i don't want to be you know stressful or anything [Music] awesome so that should be pretty much it for the cast shadows but the mousse still looks pretty flat and the reason for that is you know we have the ray and it's not casting necessarily a shadow on the face but since the face is curving away the light is not reaching the left side in my case the left side because the light source is on the right but in your case it might be different so we also need to take into account what is called form shadows so the form shadows you would put usually on the side that is opposite to your light source and that's to indicate that the object or the animal or whatever you're shading this time is three-dimensional it's not just flat it's actually a form that is curving away from the light so when it's curving away that's going to create a shadow that being said form shadows are quite soft so for now you're just going to basically just you know super roughly place them and later we're going to blend them in so that they are different from the cast shadows cast shadows tend to be a little bit um well tend to have a little bit of harder edges so again feel free here to just do the same placement as i'm doing for your form shadows otherwise you can experiment again you're just kind of following the rays and whatever it seems to be getting far away from the light source you could add a form shadow there so once that is done with the roughly place like i was saying later we're going to blend them but before we blend we're going to move on to adding some shadows on the tree and the ornaments as well so for that go ahead and create a new layer above the garlands i should say sorry above the tree details so a new layer there you're going to rename to tree shadows if i can type it properly there we go it's also going to be the blending mode of linear burn and you're also going to lower the opacity around 40 now same thing here you're going to start with your cast shadows so here i did not activate the kind of light source sketch but you could if you want it's basically going to be cast shadows below the garlands below the ornaments so you know something quite simple and don't forget a cast shadow on the trunk as well as a general basic form shadow on the left side of your tree and you probably guessed it we're also going to be adding some shadow on the ornaments so just creating a new layer above the ornaments detail layer renaming it to ornaments shadows and same thing we're going to use the blending mode linear burn blowing the opacity around 40 and just doing you know same things that we're going to be drawing this time mostly form shadows and they're going to look like crescent moons towards the bottom left of your ornaments at least again if your light source is on top right like mine is awesome so a character is way less flat already we're going to add some highlights too and that's really going to bring it to life but before that we might want to add a little bit of a shadow on the floor so it looks grounded and not just like floating in the middle of nowhere so go ahead and create a new layer right below or right above sorry your background shape rename this one to ground shadow and you're going to use the same blending mode so linear burn around 40 opacity again and not with the eraser but with your paintbrush you're going to be able to just draw a really really rough ground shadow something a little bit like this now it doesn't need to be super precise but you can see it adds a lot of dimension and it really really grounds the piece and you can skip to the highlights now if you wanted i think it might be nice to just really quickly blend in our form shadows so just going back on the shadow layer and the mousse group and picking the smudge tool here which is the finger icon i like to use the stucco brush from the painting panel it's a free brush that comes with procreate i think it has the perfect balance of texture but also allows you to smooth really well and easily so you would just go over and smooth your form shadows so you want to keep the edges of your cast shadow pretty clean and crisp but your foam shadows like i was saying earlier should be blended in a little bit better it doesn't need to be a perfectly smooth blend i mean honestly that would look quite weird actually so just just some sort of a blend that looks a little bit more you know polished and finished as opposed to when you just roughly place your shadows but again it doesn't need to be super precisely clean and uniform now you can if you want also blend the shadows on your tree i think mine are fine so i'm just not going to worry about it but if you want to blend yours please by all means go ahead that being said once you're happy with the blending of your shadows we're going to add the highlights so for that you're going to create a new layer that you're going to rename to highlights and we're going to use the blending mode and for now we're going to put it around 40 and this highlight layer right now i'm making a mistake you're going to have to put it below the details layer in your moose group and you're going to go back to the super bright yellowish orange that you used before and for the brush you can use either against the 6b pencil from the sketching panel or the outlines brush from the illustration bundle now you can reactivate your light source sketch if you want i find it really confusing for the highlights but you could if you want and basically here what i like to do is just outlining my outlines that's kind of i guess my my technique now that's what i've been calling it in the last few tutorials and i think it's the best way to describe it but every edge that is facing towards the light source i just added highlight that outlines the outline so it's not necessarily the most real well it's definitely not realistic in terms of you know lights usually don't just create a super crazy sharp line towards the edges of your character other unless the light is only coming from behind but that's i guess that's part of my style and i think it looks really really good it's quite easy to do and it really helps make your character pop a lot from the background and it makes the different parts of your character pop more and kind of separate them from each other so i think it's a super easy technique that has really good results so that's what i do but if you want to have different kind of highlights please again you're totally free to do whatever you want in your illustration it's your illustration i really really love it when people experiment kind of go off track a little bit i love to see what you guys can create with your own techniques and your own style otherwise you just go ahead and outline your outlines and add your highlights that way [Music] i also like to add sometimes a little kind of shiny spots so outside of the outlines really adding just random little blobs of lights where it is really super close to the light source and on elements that would feel a little bit uh more polished like definitely not fur but something that would be either like plastic or metal or like here the antlers you can imagine that they have a bit more of a shiny finish such as adding these shiny highlights as well so we're also going to be adding highlights on the ornaments in the tree so for now create a new layer above the ornaments layer rename it to ornaments highlight use the blending mode at around 40 or something like that and for the ornaments highlight i think it's really cool especially for the one that are close to the lights on the antlers to kind of pretend that the lights are reflected on the ornaments so you can draw little spots on top so you draw your regular outline highlight and then draw little dots that makes it look like you know the lights are reflected on the ornaments so you would do that on the ornaments that are hung on the antlers and maybe some of the ornaments that are on the top of the tree maybe but definitely not on the ones that are on the bottom because they're too far away to be reflecting the lights on the antler but i mean you could experiment if you want but that would be my advice and you probably guessed it we're going to do the same thing over the tree and the garlands so just creating a new layer above the garlands layer below the tree details layer renaming it to tree highlights using again the blending mode add and the opacity around 40 you're just gonna go over and outline your outlines [Music] and at this stage it might be a good idea to reorganize your file a little bit so it's not quite as messy as it is right now so you could go ahead and select all the layers that are related to the tree create a group with that then select all the layers related to the ornaments and create a group with that and maybe including the lights or maybe not that's that's up to you and if you enjoyed this video and want to learn how to draw more cute animals just like this one i highly recommend you check out this playlist in which i'm going to teach you exactly
