How to DETHATCH YOUR LAWN with a MOWER. DETHATCHING UNIVERSAL MOWER BLADE.

okay so here's the lawn that we are going to be doing work on today if you don't remember this one take a look at this video up here on the right hand corner and maybe it'll ring a bell but right out of the gate it is looking way better than it did last year just due to the work and the energy we put into it over last summer so today what we're going to be looking at is removing this stuff here so you can see the bluegrass underneath is starting to come out of dormancy but we want to give it the best chance possible so we're going to go ahead and remove as much of this debris as we can give it some more air flow and help this thing to start warming up a lot of the time this stuff can kind of mat up and you know not necessarily cause terrible problems but it will slow the green up and we just want to give this the best possible chance and honestly when we're done today this thing is going to look more green you're ready to do some work ranger you ready let's do some work want to do some work let's do some work yeah work work is good okay so i am both excited and terrified for this next one i am assuming that everybody out there has a mower if you're watching anything with lawns here's the big reveal we are going to throw this bad boy down now i have an appetite for destruction and i think that's really what this is going to do um this is a detaching blade from oregon blades and i threw it on i have not run it yet this was just dragging it across the lawn i've wanted to do this for a long time and i think it's going to be a mess but we're about to find out together okay [Music] i'm gonna raise this thing up a little bit um holy that is gonna take off a ton of crap uh i think i think i was a little bit aggressive on this let's try that again take two okay that's not near as destructive as i thought it was gonna be i'm gonna lower it back down just a little bit and run through that again it seems to actually be cutting the grass which is unexpected um but i'm gonna do one more time now i still kind of feel like this thing is a bad idea but right now it's actually working really really well 30 bucks that thing link description if you feel like taking a risk okay i i'm not gonna lie that worked a lot better than i thought it was gonna be i was thinking this was gonna be something i was gonna laugh at i was gonna make fun of but i'm not gonna make fun of it it actually worked really really well um but now what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna take that thing off i'm gonna put my new uh mulching blade back on there i'm gonna have to mow through this anyway to clean up all of the debris that's on here it just sort of distributed it i thought maybe it would actually pull some stuff up into the bag but it's not really pulling anything up in there no big deal let me swap out these blades real quick and then we'll do some more in case you were wondering this is a universal kit that's on here um you know it does seem like it held up pretty well but it has different washers and uh you can kind of size it up for your mower just depending on what kind you have so i didn't really have any issues with it i used a washer that was part of the kit came with a bunch of different sizes so you can sort of set up your own mower universal that's a 20 inch this is actually a 22 inch mower and we're gonna use this uh oem replacement from max power max power um and see how this does but like i've said in previous videos um i feel like the the one that comes stock with the toro is pretty much garbage to begin with and um this may be all it takes to make these mowers work better so we're gonna we're gonna test it right now now the thing i'm gonna do here is uh i'm gonna keep the mower blade low i actually want it to be cutting low because that's gonna suck up the most debris so i'll run it first through what i've already cut what i use this thing on and then i'll do a strip just by itself and kind of we'll go from there okay so there you go so you can see just the mower blade mower blade alone doing cleanup which is actually a pretty common way to do this just to get some stuff pulled up the difference in just the color of the turf you just look over my shoulder right there sorry the wind is blowing um i'm pulling more out obviously with that swirling detaching blade and it's getting down to the green grass and you can just see in the color back here between the two however still getting really good removal of that dead stuff and that's really ultimately what you're going for is just the cleanup aspect it's not that you truly need to eliminate everything out here but all of this exercise is going to make a difference on the health of the lawn in the springtime and ultimately this stress that we're throwing on it's going to end up thickening everything up anyway okay so um this thing is aggressive it's very aggressive and i would say use at your own risk at this time of year uh here cold grass is just coming out of dormancy i don't really care about scraping it up a whole lot making a big mess it doesn't really make that much of a difference you know if you feel comfortable popping a blade off switching it out to something else you know making sure you get the adapter on there right and running it this didn't do as much damage as i thought however i would not run this if the grass was actively growing and i was trying to clean up anything underneath it absolutely not the sun joe tried and true thin little blades um the little flail blades are super thin and they work really well at just tearing these things are pretty thick on here by comparison they are five six times thicker than the sun jotin so i mean this thing is gonna tear and rip and um if you don't have your mower height set right it's just gonna shred into the dirt so it works for this kind of thing but just beware if you want to buy one of these do it if you have one of those i guess i'm kind of sorry it actually works fine that blade way
