this is just a quick message about this video that i'm just about to show you and basically i just want to say a couple of things i've spent a lot of my life working with powerful circular saws and this is a technique that i've developed over the years and if you're starting out i suggest you become very competent with a circular saw and safety and understanding exactly what those things can do before you attempt to use this technique i really don't want to be held responsible for anybody who has an injury or otherwise by copying or trying what they see me do i really hope you enjoy this video see you soon so i've just constructed this roof structure and one of the final jobs of a roof for me is cutting all the rafter feet and i know in america you call them a tail which amuses me slightly but anyway so i always put my seat cut or soffit cut in now in this case this is an open eve and the soffit has got a little bevel on it which just means when you look up at the rafter feed there's a really nice detail it's just taking on that rough cut edge off [Applause] wow [Music] [Applause] [Music] so what i'm going to do first is attach a line from end to end it's going to be pulled really taut and then using my roofing square mainly and a small level for plumbing i'm going to plumb down and mark every side dead in line and then i'm going to use a small circular saw and just whip down and cut them all off so first of all i'll screw a little block on either end plumb and on the block i've marked the distance off the back of the wall plate which i need so i'll just come around here and do that there's the back of my wall plate that's where i'm cutting them off i'll just pull that one down put the idea and attach that we'll do the same the other end obviously [Music] so obviously the back of my square is just with the line i'm just going to mark them through on this one because i've got a double my square won't quite go in so i'll use a level one right i'll attach the line cut them off so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] that's basically it you can see that it's a fairly speedy process once you've marked it out but most of all it's dead straight when you put your fascia boards on we're using an oak in this situation it's going to be absolutely as straight as an arrow hope you enjoyed that see you all soon
