[Music] hello welcome back to Channel Anton Quigley bringing the latest tips tricks and techniques for contemporary painting and draw her needs and welcome back to another video this video hopefully is going to be the start of a new series of work a new series umass yes hopefully it's going to form the basis of a new scheme of work for GCSE now hopefully I want to capture and look at assessment rejected number one two three and four looking at artists research looking at experimentation materials developing ideas and also producing final outcomes but like all schemes of work we've got to start at the beginning and this video is gonna be basics of an introductory task now hopefully this is gonna form the base for the whole project and you're going to be learning along the way so this unit is there based on maps and journeys so why Maps warm-ups is a fantastic unit especially if you're starting GCSE one meaning that it's a step-by-step process and anything nice process led is always going to be easy to follow secondly those simple steps that we'll are gonna be doing are very simple meaning that it's accessible for everybody and thirdly you can easily refine your work and the more layers that you create the more advanced they're more refined it would look so you can reach those high levels so the first thing that I'd like you to do is research what's happen at that you want to look at now I'm looking at Manchester you can look wherever you want to and but also if you have got some ordinate Survey maps or you know you've got some 8's ads or anything like that please use them I just haven't got any to hand so I've had to use the Internet and I wasn't able to print any and so but if you can do print them off they will become in useful okay so we're ready to start on the first thing that you'll see is I've got five pieces of paper got saw my cartridge paper some brown paper and some paper with some coffee on it I've actually put some salt on there to create some really nice patterns and you'll see how that can become useful later on in the task now the first thing that we need to is connect these pieces of paper they don't have to be exactly the same size but you need to work out what you're gonna use to glue them together you could use pretty stick if you wanted to PVA glue you can even use string and a hole punch or gum strip masking tape or maybe even a stapler my choice is masking tape just as it's easy and also adds a little bit of texture now what we're gonna do with this is just work out the placement of the paper it's gonna work out with the first two did have to be the same piece of paper size but you can arrange them so they're similar just so it's easy when standing them up so I've got that one on there and I'm gonna glue also to say stick the mass and tape on the front and then also on the reverse just makes it a little bit more secure it's not fully secure but we're gonna add that many piece of paper on here it will be by the end and I could continue doing that with all the bit of the pieces of paper this one I particularly like I like the torn edges but it's slightly too big so I seem to trim that down if you haven't done it with the ruler that's quite a cool trick really easy but I'll keep try and keep two of the broken edges on there and I'll do repeat the process I might use a bit the Pritt stick on this one instead of using the masking tape and just mix it up a little bit and once that's all stuck on there I'll continue adding them on now one thing that you need to be aware of is try and separating the pieces of artwork of the papers dry and go for the maybe the cartridge pieces of paper the brown paper and then the coffee paper but if you haven't got the used you know you could use the envelopes if you wanted to or maybe you know a couple of layers of newspaper the more layers that you add the thicker it will be so I I'm coming towards an end on their majority I've got my piece of paper all stuck on I'm happy with the outlook of that one now we've got these other piece of paper here I've got newspaper got pages from books which is quite nice I've had a bit of coffee I've got tea bags on there that's a quite a cool trick now with these envelopes I don't if you can see but the white on the outside we've got these cool colors on the inside that's gonna double up as two pieces so have a look if you got at home see if you've got any old envelopes they've also just room rummaging through the newspaper have a look on the Sudoku and the word searches they look quite cool to put in as well so a big rumor ginger who collects and a load of things now what I'm doing first of all is tearing up the inside of the letter a lot of this blue could also symbolize the water in a map and what I'm going to do now is glue the back of it and then think about where it's going to no now I have torn this you can't cut it out into a section of F if you wanted to but I've decided just to place it on there I'm gonna do that a couple of times just working out where our one over the place is and try and overlap the letters on there I've got some lime paper now rearranging that one and that's going to also become useful later on so the final piece of paper that I'm gonna put on is the newspaper looking at the crosswords and Sudoku and the reason why I'm using such geometrical lines is that I'm gonna extend some of these lines which you'll see wants to start drawing so just time let's put on those some of these are ready for the next day's now I'm gonna start drawing now now if you've got images of maps please draw over them okay follow a guide or a line over the top I haven't got any so what I'm doing is using my imagination and then incorporating the lines that are on the map into my drawing now here's an image that I've been looking at so taking some inspiration please do not use your imagination completely you'll just end up with a load of squiggly lines I don't know symbolize nothing now what I'm also doing is looking at the areas of the paper with the coffee on following the stains that I've got on there they're quite organic lines they look really quite nice in my work too so I'm gonna continue putting some lines on there you can see I'm using the ruler again following those lines of those crosswords extending them across the pieces of paper and what you'll find now all those separate pieces that we had before are now coming together with those lines as I draw over the top of them so I'm going to do that for a short while and once we've got those done we can then think about what's next in the stages now try and think about using different pens also I'm using just a fine liner there you could use a biro permanent marker sharp you can even use red pen green pen whichever you so wish just alternate thick lines in lines geometrical lines and organic lines so once I've done that one on there it started to fill up quite nicely now I'm gonna look at doing some stencils now I'm just going to use an old envelope for this one and I'm gonna draw out a section of a map that or one of the maps I've been looking at just doing a nice shape probably do it as I say probably about the same size as you palm of your hand or a little bit smaller cut that out and then we're gonna do a scumbling technique if you don't know what's Cumberland in is I've got a video earlier on on my channel you can have a look at what that is but where I want you to place this is overlapping some of the pieces now you'll see where overlap there and then I scumble using the paint in a circular motion over the top and again that's gonna combine those pieces and laminating them all together and make them look as one map now try and fade them out as best you can do not sport too much paint on there and you'll ruin it so just just lightly do it and then you can add more and more and more and you'll see that I'm moving my stencil around the page adding more as I go along connect in those pieces of paper together triamese needs as possible now with these stencils you can do positive and negative now I've been doing some positive ones and negative around this outside what you'll see I'm doing now I'll scumble one way and then use the stencil on the other side to create a block shape so that's just the next tip there if you want to have a go at doing it so just crumble on one side get another piece it's couple on the other side and you get a blocked out area which is quite nice also I'll do that a couple of more times now the next thing that we need to think about doing is just put some extra piece of paper and stop adding those layers this one I'm going to use in some gum strip doing some strips I've also got some labels as well you might have that at home or even the ring binders where it stops the paper from ripping you might have some of those things at home and what I've done I've just cut it out I don't even if this sticky civ already on the back and then I'm just placing it over in certain areas and the reason for that is we're going to be using some coffee afterwards and you'll find that the coffee reacts to different service it goes darken some and lights on others and with a con trick there I've just put some strips on that I thought look quite nice as well so this time for the coffee it's gonna go over the top and you follow in the lines there can you see I'll need some begin and you are going to be creating those certain shapes these are going to symbolize almost the boundaries of maps so if you see certain lumps it might be in a certain color and you see them being as nice as possible highlighters were those where ever done thus crumbling it's showing a little bit lighter and wherever they paper is on waxed is soaking into there just like the Lions paper so I'm doing that in a few sections just remember with your coffee train and make it quite dark so don't add too much water to it and then you can add some other areas on there so I'm going to do this and a few sections and then see what the outcome looks like up to now [Music] so I decided to add a few more lines kind of felt like it needed it just adding some different variety of liners like dashed lines then hair dried the coffee now the next thing that I was thinking about using was more layers of paper the more layering I've got the more complex it's going to look and the more advanced is going to be I'm using tea bags that can if you can see it's quite transparent the only thing I did with them was cut out the tea open them up in half soak them in coffee and then actually just put them in a low heat in the oven and then they just dried what's have done that I've cut them into a quite a nice shape and then started to place them over other areas where new lines would show underneath them so we've got that layering process very cheap technique and as I say everyone's got some tea bags at home so very accessible for all so I've just got the negative and the positive space of the tea bag there and I just used them all basically don't waste anything now the last thing that I'm going to be doing or one of the last things is just using some white acrylic you don't have to do this I'm just being extra layers in there using some masking tape so you've got a nice straight edge or should run out in a couple of areas and then outlining it using a permanent marker this just accentuates the line makes it more prominent and also it looks like kind of motorways rather than just back roads and things like that so you've got some really quite bold lines and very fine remember you need that variety of lines to make it look interesting now what I'm thinking about here just going back to the sticky labels again do some lines of roads just using your imagination how you could use it because it's got an adhesive on the back it's just Eddie's only pulls off really simply as well and then you can just make up your own Road map on there so very very simple task of just adding some contrast between the dark and the lights lines now this is another area which I've left to the end on some darker areas because I feel like it's lacking that in contrast and I've used in the pencil and the graphite just using these stencils like you did with the paints but then using your finger you'll get the same effect but you'll get some really nice really dark areas and the way the graphite goes over the surfaces adds a really quite nice texture when you see it more or less done on that one there I'm just got out a few more Graphite's areas and then I've got to think about adding some highlight lines now the lines I'm going to be using you might not have these at home but I've got a white gel pen correction pen a fine liner that actually bleeds as well got to remember some bleed and some don't so just be aware of which one you use you can use a green pen red pen wherever you have you have to hand you can make it look quite cool and add some lines on there and just refine with a pencil like in some darks and the lights and there you can add some gradients see them go around the Royal Mail just making that stand out a little bit more and but you could go on forever and ever with this one I've decided that this is probably going to be the last layer on here and but if you put certain particular about it and you want to really work it and work it and make it really intricate then you could keep on going but yeah one of my favourite things to do on here I know you know you agree of the outcome looks quite cool now the last final thing and this is done a final thing go is just cut it around some of those edges and so we over the course of this task you wouldn't be aware of it but you know you'll have lots of different sections and what I'm doing now is just being decisive of where I want to cut out and what I feel that would be quite interesting as a final outcome now you'll see some bits that I've just cut off there you can keep hold of those especially if you do in a title page which I actually might do in my next task just using scraps a piece of paper but yet don't waste anything especially in this topic it's all going to become useful and here I'm just adding a bit more correction pen a bit more pen just working out areas and possible some houses in there as well just needed some housing estates and buildings just be creative and just try and do your best I've also added some fields some blocked off areas and I'm really trying it to the nitty-gritty now I'm not really using wet materials now it's going back to back to the dry materials and the more intricate the lines are going to be the more or you know the better the outcome will be there I've just finished off with a bit of white paint just because it needed it so that's it now it comes to phone and get a fold in half and then it's going to fold it back on itself so it should have four sections on there this is quite tricky this a little bit but it's worth the outcome on the end and then what you can actually do is draw from each section and that's what we're going to be doing next so yeah hopefully you enjoyed that one well that's it guys for the first episode of the new series let me know what you think about it in the comments if you liked this video please give us a thumbs up if you haven't
