[Music] like stricter techniques or contemporary painting and drawing needs and thank you if you've been watching the last video I had an amazing response and thank you if you've recently subscribed to the channel um it's really great to have you on board and follow me on my own journey now this video is going to be a very very similar style to the other one the last one was on transfer techniques this one's gonna be on subtractive techniques and you may think to yourself a subtractive technique well basically it's almost like a removing governmet area rather than putting a material down so once you remove it you may reveal layers underneath it so I've got five of the best ones that I can possibly give you there is other ones and I will maybe touch on them in the video but there might be on another video so I might direct you which one is on which one so hopefully that helps you so without further ado let's get on with the video let's get on with the first technique see you in a minute okay so we're moving on to the first one the first one is a crackle technique and basically the paint's gonna look crackled over the surface and what we're gonna use is the gum strip here the only difference is that I'm gonna glue it down on the matte side so the shiny side is facing upwards now once I put these two pieces on here I'm gonna use some acrylic emulsion is gonna be the best option for you well I actually did with the acrylic is that didn't dilute it with water slightly so it didn't really work so I did again so once I scraped the acrylic over the top here I decided to do it again add some water in it and then start reading apply it and it was a better much better result and as you can see you start getting that lovely crackled effect whether you want to do an aged portray or maybe some ruins of buildings that's the first one done the crackle effects now moving on to the second one I'm just gonna put some collage on here yours could be images and of you know real images whether it be people the landscape objects whatever you so wish putting some different variety pieces of paper on there now this one is going to be a petroleum jelly effect now what I'm doing on here I'm just scraping like I've done previously so nothing new using that technique but what I'm going to do once it's dried is use the petroleum jelly now if you haven't ever heard of it it's basically Vaseline so just using a bit of the Vaseline you can do it quite thick if you so wish and what you want to do is put it in the air as you want to protect so I'm going to protect the text that is just there it also might protect some other areas around the page just using a finger it don't plate don't use a paintbrush on there cuz it probably ruin it to be honest so once I've put that one on there I'm actually going to use acrylic over the top of it now again don't dilute this acrylic that I'm comports over the top I'm gonna go for a burnt umber just going back and forth over the top and have been quite gentle with it don't be too rigorous with it just so it doesn't move around the petroleum jelly too much now what you'll see is that because petroleum jelly is a oil substance it's not going to Alette the acrylic dry so using the hairdryer over the top of it I'm gonna use some paper towel I can then rub across the surface and it comes off straight away revealing the text underneath it so really really cool effect on there almost reminds me off of peeling paint and but really quite nice one of my favorite techniques on that one there and after a while once it's dried feel free to do some more drawing or painting over the top of it now moving to the next one I've just used an old piece of paper I was just working on before and a few more bits of collage over the top from newspapers and some page from books and on this one I'm actually going to be using some coffee now that isn't the technique that I'm doing which is a subtractive technique but I just thought I'd just let you know what I'm using layer wise so using some coffee over the top and here and we're actually gonna be using some sandpaper so we're gonna put the coffee on first of all if you haven't got any coffee you can use some gravy browning just be aware try not dilute it too much otherwise the color goes really faint and you can't see it and what you'll find actually by using the coffee over the top of the paint it does go really light if you use coffee over the top of the newspaper where there isn't a motion it goes through in a quite dark so you got that beautiful contrast between dark and light on there so once I've got my sandpaper it's going to fold it up a couple of times and then once it's completely dry mine's slightly a little bit too wet I'm gonna look where the emulsion is there all the acrylic and then it's gonna rub back into the surface now you can be as rigorous as you want to with any piece of where it depends how worn you want your effect and some areas will start to peel up and butts hopefully you'll start in areas that started to reveal in the artwork yourself so really lovely technique on there and also goes really smooth the surface so again drawing or painting over the top of it and it's really nice thing to do as well so once that one's worked back in there you should be able to see a close-up of just to scratch it in the surface the worn edges and just again making something look really old and worn is really cool in a piece of artwork so once we move on from there we are going to be using the masking tape technique now it's quite self-explanatory to be honest masking tape masks things do anything I've just done there if you saw was I torn on the edges now if you don't sometimes it just looks a little bit too manufactured so you'll find that I have stuck two pieces together there and I've got war-torn edges on either side and I'm going to be using a scumbling technique on this one the scumbling technique is using the dry paintbrush technique I've done it in a previous video and just working in a circular motion over the surface and then also once that's done I can start pulling back the masking tape and revealing the text underneath it so very very satisfying technique really simple really quite nice and effectively than a piece of artwork on there now I decided to carry on adding a few more areas on here again don't use any water with the acrylic because it'll go to water and go underneath the masking tape but pulling it back there even if it tears it's all looks quite nice on that one now this is one of my favorite materials for a number of years I was using it with my own work and it's quick so if you're ever at a Parker Pen before that's the quick ink in there I'm also using bleach so what first of all do before using the bleach which is a subtractive technique we're going to you apply the crink back and forth on the hair you can download if you want to or you can use it straight meat from the bottle I'm just going to cover areas and some of my work you can see it's still quite wet so it will blend and merge and create marbled effects within a piece of artwork but I like these happy accidents that happen again we just want to be loose with this in the piece of work on here and also do some expressive splashes on there also now once this has started you're happy with the amount that you've got on there I want you to just hair dry it dry and and then once that's nicely dried on there we're gonna start using the bleach again you can dilute the bleach if you want to if you use it neat it's going to be the most potent a powerful and really lift up that quick I've got some bubble wrap to use on this one again you can use whatever you so wish and then going to place on the surface and instantly you will see that the bleach has an effect with the Queen now you can use this with drawing inks brusho inks and it will just work with all inks set for black Indian ink it just won't work with that unfortunately so as I do this a few more times I think decided to maybe just do some splashes and they you can see the text coming through from the books which is really quite nice and but yeah just being a little bit more expressive in that piece of work on there and that's it guys really to be honest for those techniques hopefully they were enjoyable and you can do them in any order you want to as you can see on here it just instance you should put that bleach on there it starts lifting up and changing kind of go to that beautiful orange well that's it guys for the subtractive techniques hopefully it's interesting for you hopefully you've gained some knowledge of materials or processes that you've not known before and over myself it's always exciting finding out something new and trying it out for the first time so please please do and let me know if it's if it's worked for you or if you've enjoyed it in the comments below what I'm going to do I've got many different pieces of paper here and I'm gonna try and turn it into a piece of artwork and the town ups for you don't remember if you've got little piece of paper liner please don't throw them away they are useful for in sketchbooks or just playing around with alright and you know you'd have to worry about them they're just little low sketchbook investigations but if you like this video please give us a thumbs up and if you haven't subscribe to the channel then please hit that subscribe button and something that a notification bell see you are aware when I'm next uploading but yeah until next time guys stay safe stay creative and I'll see your next video see you later [Music]
