are you wondering how to connect studio monitors into your audio interface this video is going to cover how to go ahead and connect some studio monitors into your audio interface so you can monitor your recordings check it out [Music] hey my name is matthew welcome to my youtube channel on this channel i like to help people create music and record audio monitor their audio so i do set up videos and tutorials like this one if you're new to the channel and you're interested in that kind of thing consider subscribing let's get into the video connecting studio monitors to an audio interface is fairly straightforward you're going to need your audio interface you're going to need the cable to connect your audio interface to your computer you're going to need audio cables to connect your usb interface to your studio monitors and of course you're going to need studio monitors i'm going to leave links to all the items i'm using in this video in the description of the video so remember to check the description of the video for links and show notes to this video so the audio interface i'm using for this example is the focusrite 2i2 and the first thing that we do need to do is make sure the drivers are installed in the computer and once those are installed we need to connect the audio interface so i'm going to connect the cable into the audio interface here and i'm going to connect the other end into my pc after you plug the cable into the audio interface and into your computer the next thing you need to do is make sure that the volume is turned down on your audio interface and it is also turned down on your studio monitors keep in mind the studio monitors are unplugged from power and they're also unplugged from the speakers and the volume is turned all the way down the next thing to do is to take the audio cables that you have and plug the audio cables into your usb interface and into your speakers in this case the outputs on the scarlet 2i2 are balanced so i am using balanced trs cables trs stands for tip ring sleeve there is a tip there's a ring and there is a sleeve to this cable right here okay so these are actually balanced cables and i'm going to plug the cable into the interface now when you do this there is a line output section here and it says right and it does say left so make sure you do connect the cable into the appropriate one so just make sure that the left speaker is plugged into the left output and then your right speaker is plugged into your right output of the audio interface so i'm going to plug the cable into the left output and then i'm going to take the other in that cable and plug it into my left speaker in this example i'm using the krk systems rocket 5 these are the classic rocket 5 speaker systems and if you look on the back there is a balanced input okay so it says balance trs that is the input i'm using for this speaker you can also see that there is a balanced xlr so if you did have a quarter inch to slr you could use that as well either one of those are going to be balanced this example i'm using the hosa technology professional low noise audio cables with the ring silver connectors so after you plug in one of your speakers go ahead and plug in the other speaker this is going to give you the stereo field so if you look at the back of the audio interface i am going to plug in the right speaker now so i'm going to use the cable plug it into the right line output and then take the other end of that cable and plug it into my right speaker before i turn on the studio monitors i want to reiterate i do have the monitor knob turned all the way down on the scarlet 2i2 and i do have the volume turned all the way down on the studio monitors at this point in the process i'm going to go ahead and plug in my krk rocket fives into the wall and then power on the speakers now that the studio monitor is turned on go ahead and turn up the volume of that speaker now i'm going to turn it up all the way to zero on these studio monitors they do go to zero other studio monitors might start at zero and go to ten so you're going to have to play around with the levels there to see what works for you but in this case with the krk rocket fives there is an option to put the volume at zero if you're finding value in this video remember to give it a thumbs up it's gonna help this video out it's gonna help this video get seen by those who might need to see this information i do appreciate you for doing that let's get back into it i do want to briefly mention that the high frequency level adjust is at 0 db and the low frequency level adjust is at 0 db as well you're going to need to adjust these for your particular setup it's going to be different for everybody at this point your studio monitors are connected to your audio interface and when you start playing music in your computer you can now turn up the monitor level in assuming that you do have the driver set up correctly inside of your computer whenever you play music or audio on your computer you're going to start to hear audio from your speakers i do want to talk about the unbalanced inputs on the krk rocket 5 so on the back of the krk rocket 5 we do have an rca unbalanced input so some audio interfaces like the behringer euphoria um2 usb audio interface have an rca output and generally speaking these rca outputs are going to be unbalanced unbalanced inputs have the voltage of minus 10 db v balance inputs have the voltage of plus 4 dbu so ideally you would use unbalanced rca outputs of an audio interface to go into rca unbalanced inputs inside of a speaker given the option is likely a good idea to choose the balanced connections from your audio interface to your studio monitors but if your audio interface only has rca unbalanced output you would simply use your rca cable plug it into your audio interface and then plug the other end into your unbalanced rca input some studio monitors may only have a balanced input with an input sensitivity switch in such case it might be a quarter inch input and you would need to use an adapter for your rca cable or simply buy cables that go from rca to your quarter inch and then you would flip the switch so make sure you are aware of the type of connections that your audio interface has and the type of connections that your speakers or your studio monitors do have i hope you enjoyed this video i will do more videos for you about audio interfaces and how to set up your audio interface i kind of want to cover the inputs of the audio interface next so if you're curious about how to kind of set up the inputs of your audio interface to record go ahead and click or tap the screen over here and i'll create a playlist for you and it's going to contain those other videos about you know setting up your audio interface and if you enjoyed this video remember to give it a like subscribe to the channel for more videos like this one my name is matthew continue creating music we'll talk soon
