when starting e-collar training the number one problem that I hear from new pet parents starting this journey of e-collar training and a lot of dog trainers cuz I coach those too what e-collar what size e-collar what remote for this dog for that dog I'm going to do my best to go in depth and cover the entire e-collar Technologies website as to which collar which remote is going to be best for which dog so stay tuned we got lots to un cover all right so first things first when you go to the website you might feel a little overwhelmed or discombobulated there are so many options in my opinion too many options but you know there's a dog and a collar for there's a collar and combo for each and every dog so they're very thorough first let me get into why ealer Technologies cuz maybe you're on the fence as to like is this the right brand or not I've been training dogs with a ecolar for 13 years but not I haven't always been with e-collar Technologies and this is not a paid sponsorship not at this point anyway in in uh in my relationship with them but maybe in the future it will be but for now this is just my opinion and my experience working with thousands of dogs e-collar technology is the brand the the business is amazing customer service the tool is amazing but the customer service and I've never had in all of these years which it's been 10 years that I've exclusive been using e-collar Technologies I've never once left or had a client have an interaction with the company and been like a they didn't whatever it it's always been good it's always been positive so that's huge there are a bunch of other factors like you're able to swap size callers remotes uh you know two dog one dog four dog different contacts different accessories it's the brand of of choice and I've worked with dog TR and Garmin and Sport dog and a a ton of callers including not on dogs but in my own hand they're really really cheap ones from Amazon they feel nothing nothing nothing and then whack so you're only able to correct the dog punish the dog and I don't that's not how we're doing e-collar training not with my system if you do my online program that's not the point the point of the tool is to be able to have touch on your dog up close or at a distance so the same way you would use a leash pulling the dog a little bit to say hey come back into this heel position or come back to me when I call you or get off the counter or stop jumping up on Uncle Rick whatever the situation is it's about having touch I shouldn't have to always scream at you by verbally communicating with you if I do we got to we got to change our relationship there's a problem there at the core I want to be able to have variable levels in my communication now while the cheap e callers mark it all the same way and so to the expense of ones this is the company that I've chose for the type the feeling of the of the stimulation when you put it on yourself and you feel it it's more of a blunt sensation than a sharp pinch that's because this is the same thing as a t machine a t unit that you'd use at physiotherapy so that's the why behind why I use ecolor Technologies let's get into the which one is right for you and your dog so if we have one or two dogs then we have to decide on style of remote your dial is is the really the main difference in this because function-wise they work the same they both have momentary and continuous and vibration and tone functions but the dial so the way you hold the remote this is the way that I'm holding the mini educator the educator any of the round uh hockey puck style remotes is I'm going to be turning that dial with my thumb in my index it feels weird initially uh but you get onto it quite quickly because you're going to be practicing when it's not on your dog and when it's on your dog you'll get there so this is one option where you're turning up and pulling down some people will use their second hand I'm a big believer that you can you can totally do this no matter your hand size I've got 8-year-old girls in the program I mean their parents are there but they're they're able to do this you're able to do this and so and don't let your eight-year-old kids do this on their own um a side note the other style remote is a thumb wheel I'm sure you could use your nose if you wanted to but um your nose or your toes but it's primarily a thumb wheel and then you've got your buttons over here if this is um a one two dog unit this is the easy educator remote and I'm a bigger fan of this remote than the pro educator but we're going to go through all of the the website to figure out exactly which one is for you but for most people it's going to be one of these two remotes so the very first thing is how many dogs how many dogs do you have right now that you intend but like maybe you're like well in a year or two I'm going to get another dog well you might want to get the right size remote the right capability remote to begin with so there's all the one dog remotes can do two dogs so this uh mini educator the educator the all of them that can do one dog can do uh one or two dogs some of them can do one two and three dogs and then there's the style that can do um three and four dogs so let's let's begin if you have one or two dogs you I'm mostly using the mini educator remote because that it has half a mile range and I believe that if your dog's more than half a mile away it's unintentional or um you should be in a different category like for certain hunting dogs um but outside of that hunting dogs and maybe some police situations um your dog really shouldn't need to be more than half a mile away from you like that's a long ways away and you can get different antennas that that boost that range and whatever um as you can see here but we'll get into that in the uh accessories section so the mini educator remote is going to be what most people do the thing that I also love about the like I mentioned before about the company is I can use a big receiver with this remote I can use um a small receiver or their micro receiver we're going to get into receivers next about which one is right for your dog but this remote is going to work with just about um in any situation where you're using one or two dog scenario all right the third style of remote is this fob educator and it's not for most people it's not for most uh pet owners honestly like it might be for you if you've been using an e-collar for a few years the way that the dial turns up and down for me is not functional enough maybe I'm an old dog with new tricks but you can move it it's like a a click button on the side that you can go up by one five or 10 numbers at a time there is a ramp function which I never use like if if I do that I'm doing it manually and I would prefer to do it manually than all the like it's it's kind of cool but and the remote is small and the collar is strong but mostly this is not going to be this is this is like a pro dog trainer remote or a pet parent that's extremely versed with e-collar training with their dogs specifically and knows their numbers so out of the two I would probably go with the mini simply because I've had the least amount of tech problems now the good thing is you've got a 2-year warranty so you just call the number on the back and they'll help you out but I've had less problems with this and very few problems overall just to be clear but I've had less problems with this than the easy I do like the thumb wheel uh a little bit more I think it's easier for people the mini educator is also cheaper so see how it is in my hand like this do you want it like this or do you want it like this you can see the mini educator system uh the remote and the receiver for the mini is 219 American and 249 30 bucks is still 30 bucks over here we've got the educator this is the mini educator and the educator the difference is the range it's also the remote is bigger and again for me and the clients that I work with more than half of a mile radius away you got bigger problems so to have a smaller remote that is $20 cheaper it's a no-brainer for me that the mini educator remote now if you come over here to the working dog line which I think is a little misleading because there are a lot of situations where people um will need a bigger receiver which is all in the working line working dog ecolor section however there are more remote options here as well the boss remote and then you've got this pro educator remote which is the same as the easy but has a lot more functions functions that honestly even having trained as many dogs that I did I didn't use any of them the ramp the increase I didn't use any of the additional functions there's a bunch of program you programming you can do there will be dog trainers that completely disagree with me I didn't like the pro educator remote also because the way that it was set up to go between a 1 two and three dog unit which is is the only remote that can do that but doesn't also do four is people would often hit the P button and then they're as they were hitting their S1 button their stimulation button and it would change it from a one dog to a two dog to a three dog unit so they would always come back and like the dog doesn't Dog number two doesn't anyway and almost last but not least is this ul1 1200 remote which is basically a boss remote here this ET 800 remote the boss same size orange skin with an upen thing I'm sure one of these two if you have one or two dogs if you have three or four dogs probably the easy 904 I mean if you have four you you have to use this one okay and very last option for remotes I promise is this ft 330 finger trainer educator which looks like it's basically a mini educator remote but you can't pair a mini educator to this setup so you need to know this this finger trigger system where you wear this little ring and it you can tap the button and it will stimulate the dog at whatever number you have connected to it so if you already have an e-collar and you want this little remote and the finger kick thing turns out you can pair this remote and the little finger thing to a receiver so no matter the size that you have you can do one or two dogs with an rx70 rx90 rx10 you can pair this but you need specifically this isn't the one but um the so you order the kit it's called so if you email them uh and say I want an ft 330 kit you'll get the remote and the finger thing without um without the receiver and you can just clarify that as well or you can email me and I'll help you get it this is going to be perfect for somebody who um because you can do all the training normally right like you can do it by turning it but once you hit that finger it's whatever the number is at so what that means is eventually you get to a point with most dogs in controlled situations where you find a One Tap number where you find a number that is pretty consistent when the circumstances changes like a cat runs in front of them the number's going to go up you're going to have to adjust this manually but um most dogs know to respond at that point that you're going to be using the finger remote so this would be amazing for like a hunting situation or somebody with a physical disability or even arthritis you're going around in the winter and you've got gloves on um put it inside your mitts kind of thing but you have to understand that that the DI whatever the number on the dial is that's the number that you're going to be at therefore um you got to keep that in mind so it's something that you'll use later in training but the cool thing is you can use it with any size and uh it's pretty nifty and final final Final remote decision I promise I want it to be done too is do you need two remotes for the same colar I've never done this in all these years I've never done this but I'll tell you who it could be that I'm thinking and leave it in the comments if you can see a different scenario I could see this working very well for a very forgetful person Yours Truly but in all these years uh I just if I lose my remote I just pair I just buy and pair another remote to it um but you know if you go into the description here of this it's like for somebody that wants to leave it in the garage and in the in the house um I could the the only other scenario that I can imagine is because you wouldn't want two people stimulating the dog at the same time I could see this being in a training scenario where the dog trainer wanted to have the remote as well as the client but you would need a lot of communication and typically whoever's working the dog should be the one holding the remote sometimes I'll get the clients to hold the leash and work the dog and I'll work the remote but in those scenarios like I have the client's remote they're working the dog on leash but I'm working the dog with the remote and that might be because the dog is aggressive and I don't trust that the client won't go high enough fast enough to work the dog through the scenario or I just want them to see me working the dog but maybe the dog can't be handed off to me so there's a lot of scenarios around that training wise but it's an option it's an option you just can't once you buy your system you can't pair two remotes of the same style or different to the same color at the same time it has to come from the factory that way so and you can get any system you can get mini the micro the pro the easy you can get all of it uh in a twod dog system two dog system one dog system two remotes which way it's like basket Robins over here but do you need two remotes talking to the same caller at the same time for most people no been doing this again 13 years I've never bought one of these but it might be for you moving on to receivers okay there's a lot of options with this one too but for most people it's going to be one of these two receivers you might need to double them like you see here for my dog peepa we's two two mini Educators we'll get into her two um et300 okay now when talking about receivers they have different names for the same thing so if by accident I slip or your trainer is referring to it in a different way just know that it's the same thing so this is an ET 800 receiver it's also as you can see right here an rx20 don't know why I didn't I'm not going to call to find out this is an et300 that you would have seen with the mini educator but it's also an rx90 and then so like the higher the number the the bigger the caller and then this is a micro educator also an rx70 so um yeah I can see how that might be a little confusing for you guys too all right now for most of you you're either going to need a big receiver an rx20 or a medium receiver on rx90 in a lot of scenarios it's going to depend on the dog's size will be your first determining factor and the second determining Factor will be disposition or temperament of the dog because I've had 40 lb dogs need the big one and I've personally owned 130 lb dogs that used the small one and probably could have used the smallest one but they didn't have it when I add him all right let's start from smallest to biggest and I'll tell you the difference between them okay so this is the micro educator it came out a couple of years ago in high demand for a smaller collar but as you can see the rx70 and the rx90 not much difference so the micro the rx70 weighs 56 G and the next one up weighs 67 gr so 11 gram in the difference unless we're talking about marijuana that's not much it's not much lighter but the big difference for me is there's a quarter inch difference between where the con contacts the width between the contacts and that can be make or break for a tiny dog so the dogs that I've used this with are like bons and dogs typically Under 12 lb all right the et300 probably your most popular receiver the rx90 most people would call this a mini educator that's really the remote but this is the collar that you've seen most often on social media in training all of that stuff this is very versatile collar uh they all have the same functions in terms of vibration tone momentary stimulation and continuous stimulation so um this is it can still be very strong but it often gets put on dogs that need a bigger receiver this is going to work for a dog of any size from you know again it's that like did we need this for that quarter inch difference on the neck size but this is where it goes size and then disposition she's the kind of dog that if she sees a porcupine she goes let's see what the inside tastes like so only because I had an extra one we've doubled up the collar on her so because she has that level of aggression towards wild animals squirrels she wants to eat I can't stop her at a 100 with one of these so if you have a dog that weighs more than 45 lbs and has serious aggression you may not be able and it's like I don't Define her as an aggressive dog but she can act aggressively towards certain things and I had to learn the hard way that I couldn't stop her with this size receiver so you can add on a second receiver or you can size up so for dogs with either aggression or very high levels of prey drive this collar may not cut it again if your dog weighs between 40 plus pounds and your dog is really Jack so you've got a hunting dog you've got a Shepherd you've got a terrier this collar May not do it and for everybody else this thing will be awesome but if your dog weighs more than 80 lb and even if they're not aggressive even if they don't have high pre Drive I would still probably go with the rx10 the ET 800 this is the second most powerful receiver that they have and the contact points are the same distance it weighs 34 G more it's significantly more powerful so if you have have just a big dog a big golden retriever a big German Shepherd especially the boys a massive a Great Dane you're best off going with one maybe two of these and that's just because the sheer size of the animal before we even get to disposition they're just so big it's like how a massage therapist has to work on a much larger person than me I'm you know 6 foot 160 pounds I'm pretty lean the massage therapist doesn't have to dig very deep to to get to my muscles but on a larger animal there's more muscle to move and therefore you need a a more powerful caller to get their attention again regardless of getting to that disposition Factor but on that note if your dog has extreme reactivity aggression very high prey drive but personally a lot of times I don't know that the dog is going to be that aggressive I just add on a second re receiver and that way I'm able to connect on both sides at the same time and apply the brakes in that situation and last but not least is this PG 300 which as you can see has no contacts at all it's just a vibration collar so it does tone and vibration it's got 100 individual levels of vibration personally as someone that only uses the vibration as like a corrective measure because even though you can turn it up 100 individual levels most dogs like 95 n 99% of dogs are going to learn to blow this off very quickly there's just like just doing Food Training there's always going to be something better than the cookie the only reason I have this vibration collar was uh a to try it out on a few dogs to see how they responded most of them didn't like the vi most of them don't like the vibration period which is why I use it correctively but I use it with students so I'll pair this to my remote that way when I'm working your dog view this so you can feel when I'm hitting the button so you get the timing down all of that is displayed in my uh online e-collar course as well it gives you that sensation you can feel that tactile works really well with students guess those 1 to 5% dogs that will respond no matter what with just a little bit of coaxing from that vibration so by now you should know whether you want a round remote a candy bar remote which size receiver you are going to get for your dog pause now and write it down and we'll figure out the rest of the stuff like the contact points do you need special contact points um and accessories and whatnot okay let's get into contact pads there are all kinds of different versions now standard your your package is going to come with these ones and ones that are slightly longer that I never switch out they're like marginally longer and it's it's not long enough to really make a difference and I've Ever Needed to swap out these to the other Factory ones they just put it on that much tighter just a little bit tighter and you'll get contact but contact is the most important thing because if it doesn't touch it doesn't work so if you've got a super fluffy German Shepherd really really really fine coat dog that this is too much we can disperse the pressure having the right contact points is Paramount okay so contact pads first we need to come here and then figure out which size receiver you have so the uh tiny the rx70 has all the same versions as the uh as the other color most of you are going to have the rx90 or the rx10 so here we go they we have these uh plastic contact pads which is just if your dog has irritable skin it's going to work for them so you can see here if we zoom in I think this is some sort of 3D printed uh contact so there's no actual metal there personally never had to use them but I can see it being applicable with some pitbulls it seems to be the pitties that have extremely sensitive skin but a lot of times in my case that's a nutrition problem and when you get their get them off of the yeasty Kibbles and you get their skin feeling good and not itchy and whatever that the contact pads aren't a problem the regular Metals aren't a problem okay so the Comfort pad also something that I've only ever really put on pit bulls you can see it right here um it will disperse the pressure is kind of a con so um you know 50 will feel more like 40 42 is kind of thing uh it's dispersing the pressure between these four separate contact points for short-haired dogs this only works for short-haired dogs like gsps German short- haired pointers use that one specifically uh pitties some like um Jack Russell I suppose could use this it also helps with like getting um displacing the pressure so they can wear it a little bit longer and something you might need to just buy and try so same thing with longer hair dogs so being able to get in there a little bit longer uh so that it cuts through the fur a little bit easier it doesn't literally cut the fur but goes through the fur a little bit easier long-haired Comfort pads okay so the big question I get from trainers a lot of times is the soft wing tip or the ultra wing tip this one there's a couple of things about the soft wing tip so they say that it's only good for like single uh single coated furry dogs so like um I don't even know what that would be would that be a German Shepherd do they have a single coat anyway is the big difference for me is like see how this is looped at the end it kind of looks like a a paper clip you can see it here in person it's like a paper like a paperclip folded over versus just the end of a paper clip so so you can see here these are the soft wing tips and they're kind of folded over metal versus the ultra wing tips it's just like a paper clip folded over for most of the long-hair dogs so uh huskys fluffy German shepher birds for NS for even some Doodles but for the dogs that are going to be wearing it a little longer and have a little bit thinner coat like a doodle like a long-hair doodle would be I guess a single coated long-hair dog I would use this soft wi and then we've got the titaniumsalute04 or the plastic I feel like this titanium would be more conductive than the plastic even though it says the plastic is conductive which obviously it has to be so that's contact points onto accessories all kinds of options you can really bling out your collar by having all sorts of different colors make sure you get the right size strap so the big biggest receivers will need this 1 in biothane and then you can get them in all sorts of cute colors I'm really surprised I don't have pink collar I feel like that's a new Option and the other two sides the rx90 and the rx70 have your 3/4 in biothane so ecolar Tech also has these bungee collars with a buckle this can be great for where you size it once and you put it together I just don't like buckles now I've never had a client say the Buckle came undone but buckles Come Undone I've got a ton of clients that swear by it they love it I personally just use your regular what it comes with or you can look online on Etsy see people that make these um these collar systems that your e-collar the box would just kind of slip over this area right here and you would have kind of like this but then your bungee would be there these are great they're super easy and convenient to just slide on I use them for my dogs but I use them for my dogs because my dogs don't play rough with other people's dogs where they'd be grabbing by the collars when I go hunting I don't use this uh type of collar on my dog anymore she's been caught on enough fences and whatever that the you know the the individual straps are just pulling out uh but for people that are really struggle to get the right level of um tension on the collar getting that contact on their clients with arthritis or really fidgety dogs just having buying these and uh and putting them on can be really use useful I just find that the there can sometimes be complications with the bunge itself but it's always a it's always a trade-off these are really cool these are good only two products that I haven't talked about are is the uh bark collar and the containment fence the containment fence I've sold one the people were happy you have to bury the line so it's not the same as the um above ground Wireless one the problem with this system would be uh burying the line but it's much more robust than the above ground Wireless one if you were going to go with the cheaper above ground Wireless one I'd still recommend doing e-collar training properly so that way your dog learns how to turn off the pressure and then the bark collar I've had a couple they work pretty good there's a bark counter built in there's an auto function where basically it'll give your dog the opportunity to bark and be corrected a couple times uh per level before it goes up personally I always stuck to manual and um yeah it was pretty good I'd give it a four out of five stars write in the comment what e-collar size and combo has worked for you and your dog I think it would be very helpful for the whole community and if you have questions just put it in the comments below I will do my best to get to you if you want more help with e-collar training just go to doyle.com and get a copy of the e-collar 10 1 plus it's got all kinds of information from how to condition your dog properly all of your obedience dealing with unwanted behaviors including reactivity dealing with your dog in social situations when people come over when there's other dogs involved a troubleshooting section and more it's all there in one spot I've thought of it all out for you I really hope that this helps know what you're loved see you in the next one bye me
