[Music] hey guys welcome to Jenna and Jason's outdoor project we are day five here over two weeks we've had nothing but rain unbelievable so today max was able to come out we're gonna show you who are finishing elements unfortunately we couldn't show you the whole build just that time of year everybody's crazy busy what we have is we have two different levels of platform this one's attached to the house because it was designed that way originally there's footings poured when they bought the house last year but this section down here it wasn't and we did the neighbors deck there a few weeks ago we found that the backfill around these houses was crazy huge boulders massive trees anything and the biggest stuff you could find these builders just kind of really went to town and making it difficult to put anything in the dirt so what we're doing is this one's attached to the house this one's a floating deck we showed you that in the video before and we're connecting the dots now so we have to be a little bit creative because we're gonna get some frost there's gonna be some movement on this side there's gonna be noise in the background today because we don't have the luxury of time this stairs these are bolted to the upper section and just resting on the lower section so in the winter time things can move around and it'll settle in the spring and everything can be fine we're finishing the transition from one to the next with planter boxes again these they're not attached to anything okay they're just resting in the gap so we're going to show you how to make a planter box like this a couple of simple little tricks we're gonna finish a few pieces of skirt board we're gonna put in some posts and rail for the stairs we're gonna finish off some decorative handrail work that's almost done my son's been taking care of all the handrails here is doing an awesome job and we got to build a quick little set of two stairs to get off the deck other than that this one's just about done again it's all cedar it's picture framed it's just gorgeous you got to love all the black accents even the gate these everything here you can buy the local building store so it's really simple for you to just kind of take this kind of project and build at your own house we don't have any time to waste so let's get right down to it sup everybody so today I'm going to show you guys the deck that I built with a little help with my dad this is the deck that I started about two weeks ago you know we it's a full cedar deck so we got some really nice good-looking wood here and to go with the nice-looking wood we need some nice-looking railings so that's what I'm going to show you guys today we got some black spindles with some black caps looks very nice and we got some cedar posts to make it look all very sexy so here we go alright so beginning with the spindles we're using some black painted aluminum spindles so we don't get any rusting on this nice cedar wood to start off we wanted to begin with these little black post caps are not caps little slots I would say what I wanted to do is I wanted to strap my like hard concrete black pieces to the 2 by 8 which is the substructure of the actual deck by doing so I had to create some calculations and make sure that every single piece is exactly the same measurements as my corner piece that way the deck looks very linear looks awesome and here we go alright so starting off with our cedar slots we got some pre-drilled holes here we bought these at the store and they actually fit perfectly with these black looms aluminum spindles which is very helpful for us the best way to install it is by placing your piece completely and exactly where you want it to go and the best way to work from it is by working left to right a little strategy I created was twisting the little spindle so it's 50 down here and 50 or sorry 50 down here and 50 up here right and as we work left to right we get every single spindle in all I have to do is smack the top and screw it on the back and make this deck look very nice and finished at ah alright so don't smoke it down here nice alright so this is what the finished product looks like without screwing it in because this is our outside of our deck I want to start with putting a screw here and here that way on the inside of the deck where the people are going to be hanging out they cannot see any screw holes looks very nice and very neat so we're gonna start off with that the way I screwed in is I'm gonna start off with somewhat of a pocket screw type strategy without the actual pre-drilled hole I'm gonna go on a 45 degree angle now these are inch and a half screws so I go inch and a half back with a 45 degree angle and it should pull my piece of wood my 2x4 top rail here to my 4x4 I know looks super nice there we go there's one down we'll get our second down right now again on another 45 and let in very nice and easy comes up each screw that I got into this railing right now it's got about eighty pounds of sheer strength so that's about 600 pounds after every single screw that I've put in all right so putting my last screw in I've created a bit of a triangle type shape here so if I just jump on top of this deck right now if I try to shake it it's not moving a muscle so looks like I did it correctly we're gonna install the handrail same system they got cute little hardware and these were shorter thank God because I don't know how it fit on us premise being that we put a 4x4 post we mount it to the deck okay then we're gonna cut our rails to fit in the gaps put in our spindles we put on the cap relatively straightforward the secret here is to make sure that you got the right angle so you want to have your 2x4 on the nosing of your stairs okay check your spacing try to get the gaps of same Rick your shoot my pores in the inside throw that on and cut that bad boy for me shoulda half into the post the reason for doing this so we have something to screw to we want to really kind of tie this all together I mean this system is great through the floor but wouldn't want to rely on entirely [Music] okay let's see how that's gonna all right all right so I'm just gonna attach the rail to the post a couple of screws on a 45 I am a boat three coordinates and just want to duplicate that effort up here boy it's time to buy a new bit when your black bit is all metal shiny it's time to burn it all right so you can check this simply by taking a pencil marking off the center of the see if those two kind of line up all right so to start off my nested of using it is putting in your first three spindles and then I've already cut it for you guys but initially what I had done before is I had the spindles upright and I move the 2x4 comes up and then I placed my guys in correctly and then once I had that done I traced my lines cut my piece and then I install as I am right now now it is a little tricky so I do need a helper I'm sure guys aren't leather I don't know if you know my helper this is Jeff he's been working with me forget to spread us from my side of the family I guess well you got any more fingers Kiwi government we brought a third guy in because we're one hand short all right so let me twist these guys just get your online already Bam Bam Bam alright the moment of truth ladies and gentlemen [Music] so I'm using the same strategy as I did with the straight railings that I had done talked about earlier we're just going from left to right side to side [Music] all right don't move three quarters in we're just going to go with a couple of pocket screws why not but there's a little jig it's not really a pocket screw that's going to angle [Music] all right so now that the railings are finished he's gonna jump on the saw for me what we're gonna do is we're just gonna take a couple of dimensions we have 2x4 across the structure of this deck which can take our load from these planter boxes so the idea basically is we're gonna have something sitting here that's also sitting over here all right and that's how we're making our planter box nice and easy and it doesn't matter if things are moving around because there's lots of space there's a little overhang and this skirt that attached the planter box I'll determine if it's in or out you can just adjust it every spring not gonna hurt anybody else we need a top and a bottom rail and we want to cut it in and we wanted to be pretty so the front of this box we want to be the same dimension as this we want to have this board mirrored on the front so we're gonna go with a 43 inch size planner we've already got the top and bottom for the front of this cut at 40 minus the thickness of the two-by-fours we're gonna build the sides first and then measure and cut them in and we'll show you how to do that really simple because the boards are gonna be coming across the front flush to mimic the skirt it's actually gonna finish like this and then this side will come over top just to set this up we're gonna go with flush everything we're doing here is designed for simplicity just go flesh to flesh no measuring weren't necessary okay so that sets my size now I can attach my boards going from front to back never leave the stickers on guys I know it looks like junk so we're gonna go like that we're gonna just put in two screws left and right side we're not gonna stagger them when a piece of what is that shirt I don't need to stagger it if I'm installing this on a skirt that's real over three feet then I'll stagger the screws just to help keep things from twisting try to put the nice pieces out from the cut keep everything square as you go measure flesh for me the nicest ones have a little bit of red color in them but the truth is when it comes to wood anything that's unique is gorgeous and that's the rule every time I see a knot it's gorgeous which I'm I see live edge bark gorgeous every time I see a piece of board that looks like a piece of plastic that's been mass-produced I hate it I don't want it I want something with character all right now we're gonna go four pieces in that's it this is gonna be going through the skirt and we will measure and cut the last piece as we go now because we're making both sides exactly the same from the same cut size of wood I can measure this side of the platform and the other side at the same time to cut the holes and anybody got a pencil Thank You Connor hold green one never seen a green pencil on the show before all right and all I'm doing here just generally tracing the area that I got to cut out [Music] so with these holes I made them bigger in every direction we're gonna be adding framing flooring trimming it doesn't really matter right I just want to make this easy I stick it in that's the side of the planter box life is simple there we go so half of my life has just cut measure repeat here we go you don't have to chalk line and measure and just go flush cut your wood first make everything flush knowing that flush makes square as long as you're cutting square flush is square perfect that's gonna work awesome no this is my inside because I measured off for the back skirt and I'm using the same size building material I know that this is automatically square soon as I put the screw in this is the front again I'm using the pre-cut sizes of wood to determine my design life is simple like this I don't have to think very hard and a day like today in this kind of heat that's a good thing to have hey here's the floor you just set this right on top of the two by fours I'm gonna throw a couple screws in there just for good measure this is getting awfully cozy now nothing special here we're looking for gravity to do most of the work this is just a planter box after all so this is basically just a structure we're gonna use to carry the load we're gonna line this box with the landscape cloth and that's basically it okay because we're landscape cloth and we have all this board here just wanted to add a one more layer of drainage I'm gonna drill a few holes with a spade bit just to make sure I don't want anything to start seeping out all through the front all over the deck so somewhere near the front of the deck I'm just gonna toss a couple of holes into the board Versailles [Music] that way if we ever get a heavy rain it gives this planter a chance to drain out without causing too much of an issue so the last thing we need for our box is a little lighter mitered framing Wow so my outside corner measurement is the width of the box plus the half inch each side for overhanging nice and simple of course we're gonna blender the outside 40 sometimes that's just the easiest way to do it that's a lot faster there we go that's sexy pretty just burn that edge there we go and now we can fire that into there we're gonna connect the outside corner here alright we're gonna set up our overhang which is what half an inch [Music] well guys thanks a lot for joining us hopefully max can come back a little bit later and get the after shots of the deck as it's finished we've only got about a half an hour so before the storm hits and it's got to get done today so we're gonna turn off the camera and put them to work thanks for helping out max see you all next time if you're enjoying these videos subscribe to the channel hit the like button but most
