not very professional but it works and then tack this side in today's video you're going to be learning how to build a wall with a door in it and if you're new to this channel this channel is all about building your own house and saving a ton of money so be sure to subscribe and hit that bell so you get an alert every time i release new video and like this video so that way the youtube algorithm can promote it alright so the first thing you're going to need to do is look at your plans to see where your door is going to go and if you turn around here this is the wall we're going to be building right here so it's going to go from this end over to this end and since it's on a concrete slab we're going to have to make sure we use a pressure treated plate and we're going to need a drill to drill out for those anchor bolts i was just showing you so if you look here we got these anchor bolts we're going to have to drill out for those so let's go ahead and get our tools ready and get set up and let's get this done so i'm using this camera it's a canon m50 i've been using an iphone to make all my other videos so let me know in the comments below if you like this video camera better than my iphone and uh right now we're set on 24 frames per second so it's very cinematic but uh let me know if you like 60 frames better like on the iphone all right so right here is our material to build the wall first thing we want to do is go ahead and start carrying material over and uh we need to know what size door we're going to use and if you're not familiar with how you figure that out if you're using a 36 inch door for instance all you got to do is add two inches to the width of the door and that's your rough opening and if your door slabs 80 inches you just add two inches of that so that would give us 82 inches for your rough opening height which already know that but as far as your height goes make sure you measure because some door heights are different and it kind of depends on what you're using for flooring too so just double check that before you build your rough opening and anything that you don't know about your door be sure to find out as far as far as it needs to be fire rated or not or if it's interior exterior but today it's going to be an exterior door that does not need to be fire rated so um if you're not familiar fire ready it's usually between the garage and the inside of your house is where you need a fire rated door so um but yeah let's go ahead and get some material and get going all right so i got my material over here and now the first thing you got to do is go ahead and get your plates laid out you want to lay it on the edge of the wall where it's going to be and you come down here and go ahead and make a mark right where it ends so if you see there it goes flush with this uh exterior wall here on the band board go ahead and make a mark make a line and then we're going to cut those off right there all right if you look here we went ahead and cut it off flush to where it's going to be setting and i went ahead and made a chalk line right here and if you look all i had to do to do this was simply measure four inches over make a mark you see my little mark there then you come down the other side of your wall here and you just do the same thing just make a mark here four inches out from the edge because you're two by four plus sheeting for an exterior wall and then you hook your chalk line edge of the concrete slab there pull it tight chalk the line and now the next step is go ahead and you gotta lay 16 on center and in this case it doesn't really matter which way you pull but i'm actually going to start it from down here all because i got a bathroom going here and i want to make sure i get it really nice and accurate so i'm going to go ahead and pull from this edge and lay 16 on center okay so if you see here i pull from the edge and when you get to your 16 mark on your tape you just come back three quarter and make a mark this is a mistake a lot of people make is they pull make a mark on 16 then put their stud there that's not how you do it because you got four foot sheets and eight foot sheets of material and they got a break 16 on the center so if you look here inch and a half is your two by four so the 16 mark is going to be the center of that two up that's why you go three quarter back because an inch and a half so you can see i went ahead and made my marks all through here and now what you go through and do is find where your doors and your walls are going to be hitting this wall okay so this is how it works so we found the center of the door where we're going to want to put it and we know the rough opening is 38 inches so half of 38's 19 so we put 19 on the center mark so we know the end of the tape is going to be the edge of the door so you can either put a v or put a mark like that either word doesn't matter we know this side is going to be our trimmer where it's going to be setting if we go over here and we come to our 38 mark make a little mark and we know this side's gonna be where our trimmer sets for this edge so our headers measured 41 inches so that way after a trimmer on one side then a trimmer on the other that's going to give us a rough opening of 38 inches and now after that we go through and detail the wall so detailing is just like a car detailing i'm just kidding so laying out where your windows and doors are going on a wall is called detailing just so you know so right now this process called detailing your wall and we already marked the edge where the bathroom is going to go to so we already got that laid out so now we go through and make our lines where our layout's going to be all right so now that we got our layout on here and just as a refresher i marked three inches back from where the jack's gonna set because after you have a trimmer and a king stud it's going to take up three inches inch and a half for each piece of wood so i put a little x so i know that's where the jack's going and now every wall you're not going to do this but since i'm on a masonry wall you see the anchor bolts here and the anchor bolts here there's an anchor bolt over there so you're going to have to butt your bottom plate against the anchor bolts and then make a straight line where it's going to hit the measure off the edge so you get the center of it and drill it out because it has to go over those so that's what we're going to do now and after that we'll go ahead and slide it out of the way and start putting it together all right guys so my dad showed up and i was gonna build this wall back here without sheeting on it but changed my mind since i got help i'm actually gonna slide it over here where i have more room to work and these plumbing pipes aren't in the way that you see there in the background so i'm gonna take these plates already got the hole drilled in the side of it there where uh um those bolts are going to hit so that's all ready to go so i'm going to remove the stuff there we go and lay it out and shoot together door opening first and then start putting the studs in but i'll show you how to shoot the door opening is pretty simple but you may have never done it before so we went ahead and roughly laid where the door is going to go and here's our layout from before so we're going to go ahead and take our jack and put it up against our header go ahead and get it lined up right up top um you can see it's flush here and then sticking up a little bit there go ahead make sure it's down all the way on this trimmer and get attack a nail up top so if you look here it's not flush right there to fix that what i like to do sometimes just lift up your jack it'll help line it up so i put this end on my foot i know it's not very professional but it works and then tack this side and then pull it off and as you can see it's nice and flush and now go through and just put about 10 nails this side and about 10 nails on this side boom that's all there is to that and now you go and do it on this side so as you can see we got this opening built and put together and now since it's uh just sitting here and the plates aren't nailed on go ahead and line it up with your layout it's kind of hard to see probably but it's over there on that edge and it's right there now if we look on the other side you can see it's on the layout too so that looks good and uh go ahead and nail those there and come down here put on layout and tack it together we're gonna measure and get our cripples that go above the header here that let the weight go down to the header so that's next all right guys um i went ahead and got these blocks cut and i used my nice little rigid saw over there i don't know if you can see it but um i got four of them here ready to go so all you gotta do with these is pretty simple let me show you get your handy-dandy framing nailer come back down here and let me flip the screen around here all right so go ahead and get your block put it put one on each side of the header here all right looking good and tack that in spot all right got a few there and uh whenever you have a block like this and you got an edge missing like that i always like to put that on the inside it i don't know i just like to hide the nastiness all right so i'm gonna take that one in all right and now get these blocks here on the layout that you put before might set the camera down for this one let me see and now the rest of it all you got to do is go on your layout and each one of those x's where a stud goes lay the studs out and you just nail it together all right so i went ahead and laid all the studs out as you can see here they're on the layout but they're not nailed yet and uh i got to go through i'll nail off one side then nail off the other and uh we'll start on this end right down there let's run in down there and come this [Music] way yeah got that nailed off all right so now we go to the other side we're gonna nail this side off now this one i recommend you get a pipe wrench if you watch my other video uh you see me get a pipe wrench to uh straighten out a twisted stud so you're bound to get a twisted stud when you do these walls trust me i've never bought material and it been um no twisting at all just telling just telling you the truth okay this one's a little twisted but i can twist down with my hand i don't need a pipe wrench all right all right you have to check this one out i don't know if you can see here the lighting but it's not on the line all the way he's twisted pretty hard so best thing to do take your pipe wrench on it like this and then push down you can see it lined right up on the line all right so then just hold it down and nail it all the studs are knit off on the wall there's that door opening there it's looking pretty sweet and uh now since there's an exterior wall gets cheating on it like i said earlier since my dad's here we're gonna go ahead and shoot it now even though if i was by myself i'd probably just not sheet it and shoot did afterwards to save some uh oh look at this there you go to save the weight on it but now we're going to go through tack this bottom down and then square it up then tack that top so that way it squares up the whole wall all right we're going to switch to these nails these are 2 and 3 8 regular sheathing nails um the other nails we're using were framers let me show you those now these are the nails you want to use for framing the studs and like i said these are sheathing nails you just don't need a big nail like this for sheathing so just a little tip all right so we're going to start down here in this corner and nail this sheathing down all right so you want to come to this corner and get it lined up right on the corner so get one edge on the line or one edge on edge and then this side on the edge and tack a nail in it all right now come over this side get it flush with the uh sill plate all right you can see there it's nice and flush go ahead and nail off this bottom side of the sheathing all right so now we come up here and we get this one flush all right you see that's nice and flush attack one there and that should be square over here now this one's going to stick up above a little bit because this sheeting is a little taller than the wall so that's fine so if we know this corner is flush and this bottom's flush we know the sheet's sitting square on the wall so go ahead and nail off this top now you can nail off the rest of the whole wall every six inches apart on the edges all right you see it's breaking nicely on this stud remember i told you at 16 on center you got any tips for us for building a wall yes it looks good but hey that top part you're talking about a little bit high you double plate that that'll cover that take care of that yeah that's right because all these walls that we already built and this one you all get double plated so you don't put the double plate on until the walls stood up all right so we nailed the edges 16 so now the edge is six inches apart with nails so now you go through check your stud you can see it's just offset from this line just a little bit so hold about right there and nail down every about eight inches all you do you go through and just lay the other sheets on all right so we got all the sheathing done and usually we don't cut the doors out ahead of time but what happened was we had enough scraps to fill in up here above this header so we just got some scraps on the edges and now we're going to go ahead and put the house wrap on it's pretty simple too best thing to do on this is uh just go ahead and line it up on the edge and tag it but i'll show you so i bought this thing off amazon it's actually a cap cap nail nailer and it's pretty sweet um it was refurbished by swear it's like brand new it's only like 100 bucks and they typically go for like 200 and something so it's a tachy brand we're going to try it on this house wrap and if you look here it comes with uh these staples these are just little uh i think they're yeah 7 7 8 staples they're only 18 gauge and it comes with these roll of caps and they just load in the gun and it just self feeds as you shoot so it's way quicker than nail them on by hand if anyone's ever done uh cap nails before knows it sucks all right so what you do with this stuff's pretty simple um since we have uh no band board beneath this since we're on a slab we just line this along the top unlike this wall that we did in the other video so all right so all you got to do is line this on the top and uh tack it there all right and then you come along the top come on i'll drill it up here first [Music] what we do we roll this across the top and then pull the tension pull the slack out line it on the top just like that and pack a nail or attack a cap and then come down here in this corner attack another one so now we uh have this squared then pull the slack out of it in this corner then we're going to attack another one boom so now it's on there where we need it and we just nail every couple feet or so on the edges just like this come down and then oh out of caps but we just go along the edge every like i said a couple feet along this edge and this edge or two feet then the fields just put one every like four foot across there just to keep the fields held down and that's all there is the house wrapping a wall before you stand it oh one more thing go ahead and cut this off leave about a foot to overlap and do the other wall all right guys we found the easiest way to set walls uh is to lift it up on these work benches first i don't know if you can see that get them setting on these workbenches first that way it's already up to your uh arm height so and just kind of power it up from here put a nice little kicker on it tap on it right to that block so should i lift it up and get that right in those anchor bolts should be good to go all right so we forgot to put the liquid nails under it we like to do that where there's concrete floor so went ahead and just propped it up on top of the anchor bolts here and we're going to squeeze a nice bead underneath so better late than never that way it just helps seal between the concrete and the uh um outside and the seal plate put a nice liberal bead under there like i told you guys before the only thing i'm literal about is my liquid nails all right so we got the wall back down on top of that glue and uh bolts are lined up pretty good you can see we're right on that line i don't know if you can see it in the camera but looks really good now we're going to put our washer on the bolts and tighten them down nice and tight and then you can use a just regular socket but i actually got a pair of these pliers let's tighten that down really tight and do that on each anchor bolt here and then we'll plumb the wall up see what it looks like that looks pretty damn good all right let's attack that all right so if you look here we just put a brace onto this band board connect to the upper side of the wall that's just going to hold temporarily plumb until we get the other wall up against it and now we're just going to do that over here to that other side it's looking pretty good all right guys there it is that is how to build a wall with a door opening and here's the final product and if you take a measurement here it should be 38 and a quarter let's take a look maybe a little heavier but that's good and if we check the bottom we should have our rough opening of the same and if you look here that looks good at 38 and a quarter a little heavy sign and our height measurement look at our height we got about 82 and 7 8 or so so that is good um like i said we like to do uh 82 and has fine but what i did is all these jacks for the whole house work on the windows into your doors and everything so it's a little taller than what you really need but that's fine and you know what and don't forget though uh this gets three quarter rubber floor for the gym in here after this plate comes out you gotta cut this out yet and uh then it's gonna boost it up another three quarter inch before you set the door in there and if you're curious to see what the outside looks like this is what the outside of that wall looks like [Applause] it pretty much looks just like it did laying down all right guys i just wanted to tell you thanks a lot for watching be sure to subscribe if you haven't already and i will see you in the next video peace
