foreign welcome to my growing space I wanted to show you guys some raised beds um that I have in my garden I have an old gun case I have a metal raised bed I have these grow bags you could get these on Amazon I'll link the ones that I have down below I also have kiddie pools I have these metal raised beds all kinds of raised beds okay but today I'm going to show you how to make a raised bed for next to nothing out of discarded palettes um these palettes that I use for this bed were thrown by a dumpster for anyone to take and they were already cut in half so most of the work was already done for me when I measured them they were about 23 inches in width and I cut them at 11 and a half inches okay so I cut both pieces at 11 and a half inches so just find the center if you do find them in half like this find the center mark it and then cut it as always Jack is here supervising giving me some emotional support he has been the best little fur buddy animal for a child the last year and a half um dealing with some of the things that I'm dealing with some of you know some of you don't um but yeah he's always around when I'm doing stuff okay before you use a saw like this make sure you have gloves on and glasses always use glasses okay clear ones to protect your eyes from potential splinters or you know the saw kicking back anything like that okay so if you don't have a saw like this you can use a handsaw um the only reason why I'm using this is because I have one if you don't have one just use a handsaw this saw though the blade is not long enough to cut all the way through so it's just cutting almost halfway through on both sides and then I'm using a handsaw to finish the job all right to use a handsaw you want to have it on something where you can hold it down and then cut through and then you saw that I used my foot to hold part of the palette down and saw it through all right so basically this is one palette cut in four and again like I said most of the work was already done for me because it was cut in half perfectly okay so making one garden bed out of one palette and this will be about a four by four by four foot palette um about that size okay basically a perfect square almost okay and I feel like it's really aesthetically pleasing I know a lot of people want to start Gardens but you don't want it to look um tacky or too shabby or anything like that and you know I understand I like my garden to look a little bit shabby but also a little bit pretty so it doesn't really you know bother me so long as you're growing food that's all that matters if it works for you that's all that matters if you could grow food in it that is all that matters now I'm going to use some four inch um four and a half inch long screws these are deck screws to connect these pieces I use three to four screws per section you do not want to just use two screws because that's just doesn't um make the bed stable enough it will be wobbly once you try to move it so use three to four screws and try to stagger them just a tiny bit okay so I'm letting the screw grow and grow I'm thinking about plants go through the um what looks like a two by three or yeah that's a two by three to go through that and then into the two by three and then there is a one by three or one by four whatever that is um I could be wrong that's okay I'm okay with being wrong all right but make sure you use more than you know two screws at least three four will be best I used four okay and this drill bit is my favorite drill bit I'm pretty sure somebody's going to complain um and say I should use a smaller drill bit this is my favorite drill bit I spent eight dollars on this drill bit six years ago and it's still here I lose it sometimes but I still find it it's my favorite okay anywho once you have your sections connected like this you're just gonna check um if you did use three screws just check see if it's wobbly and if it is put in another screw okay I also did put some screws in like a angle um instead of straight in like a like a I guess like a slanted angle where the screw goes in a slanted way to make sure it is stable so here I'm just checking to make sure it's not wobbly it felt a little wobbly right there so I'm putting in another screw and that's pretty much it um you can pick this up yourself I could pick it up myself but um my son decided to help me so we moved it to an area where I first wanted to put it which is behind my palette fence and then my son said it looked weird there he was like just put it in the fence so I brought it in the fence and put it down where I wanted to do some no dig beds so now it is where the no dig beds would have been okay my fence my garden fence by the way is made out of pallets so that works for me as well and it cost me almost nothing all right so to keep the soil in this bed this is meant to be an affordable garden bed if you want to go out and buy extra material to close the little gaps around the pallet bed that is completely fine it will still be super affordable you can buy material to close the gaps but I'm not doing that I'm just going to use some landscaping fabric or weed barrier fabric this is the cheapest one I could find it was about 3.99 for a roll and I'm just going to staple this on the inside and then to fill this garden bed that's also going to be affordable what I do first would be leaves mostly leaves and small twigs and then my soil and I'll do about fill it about all the way at least two to three times and wet it every time I fill it because if you're using leaves they will break down to about 70 percent of their volume so if you put in you know a whole bunch in there 70 percent of it will break down and you know shrink so so yeah all right and then I'll put like about a good four five inch layer of soil on top of that okay so as you can see I'm stapling the insides to hold the fabric in place if you do not have weed barrier fabric you can use cardboard use the cardboard cut it to size and fit it all along the side staple it in place and then you can fill that with soil I would double up the cardboard because I do use cardboard to block the soil in on my kiddie pools that I use to plant in I think I showed that before in a previous garden video and that has been working for me for about five years now and for the little sections you can staple the garden Fabric or landscape fabric if you want in there and plant in there as well but I think I'm going to use cardboard for it I didn't have cardboard on hand because my kids used it in their little bonfire that they made but I hope you found this video helpful I hope it inspired you to at least try to make one of these so you can grow your own food especially with inflation this would probably be the best and most affordable way to start a raised bed garden and this will last issue a few years with proper care of course and like I said if you want to get extra material you can close the sides in but I'm just going to use cardboard this video is supposed to end but I decided to add in the part where I fill this new palette garden bed raised bed whatever you want to call it okay so this is how I fill most of my raised beds this is also how I do my no dig Beds which I grow directly on the ground so every fall or spring I'll do a really thick layer of leaves and soak that in okay and just kind of layered it up like a lasagna so leaves water leaves water leaves water and I'll do like a thick layer of compost soil on top and that's for my no date bed for garden beds I like to do leaves Twigs small sticks things like that today I'm adding in some unfinished comp post I also added in some kitchen scraps which I did this with my tomato beds last year sometimes I'll dig a trench in my no dig bed and put in kitchen scraps and just cover that up it's basically like composting in place without you having to turn things and you know do all that extra work I'm basically composting in place okay and the reason why I'm adding the water this is just to help everything break down faster the earthworms are going to be able to come in and help break everything down and this bed will be ready to use for summer crops in about three to four weeks so that is my timeline for when my summer plants come outside if you follow me on my gardening page on Instagram at Garden of Queenie you'll see everything that I have gotten started for this year's Garden I'm actually thinking about starting some extra Peppers tonight um I'm obsessed um but yeah I hope you guys enjoyed the video I'm looking forward to Growing lettuce in the little sections so this is lettuce that I actually grew in my dresser bed which is no more I had that for five years and I finally took it apart and I do plan on putting some squash in here maybe a couple of bell peppers maybe some Tomatoes maybe some kale lots of different options can be grown in this palette bed okay but I hope you guys enjoyed the video hopefully it was helpful and hopefully you can see that you can start a garden for a very small amount of money especially if you could find a pallets for free or some people now sell them it's really hard to kind of come by pallets where I'm at so I try to get them for free if I can thank you for watching and see you soon in another video bye guys
