fail out at Steve Holcomb Pro Auto custom interiors and a lot of you requested to do a video on how they make those consoles that they put in the car and I'm interested in it too because I think that's one of the focal points of his interiors is uh I think the console is the way they kind of waterfall through there and run all the way to the back is awful cool so today I'm gonna have actually spent a couple of days but over the next couple days I'm gonna shoot the process of how Tim that's his cousin that's his partner in this business he usually does the work on him how he makes one of those consoles and kind of give you an idea what goes into to making that part of the interior so let me go inside we'll get this thing set up and started Tim how are you brother tell me what you're doing my pattern that's what you start with a piece of cardboard our angles and get it all lined up where it's going to match up for the dash and this when we eliminated the woodgrain the factory radio because it's going to have a remote commander unit with mount inside the console eliminate it all that may put those gauges right here French those back in there and the head units in the in the back so all he needs is the small remote okay we'll put it in hiding inside it keeps it all clean looking okay get our angle not here for their console make make this make a pattern you'll have a sliding door we'll put a track in here make a lid for it and put cupholders in here a 12-volt outlet some courtesy lights in the side okay whatever else you don't make it out of cardboard you you transfer this over to something else be out of PVC okay she start screwing it all together with some blocks keep the proper spacing so the door will slide nice and smooth right and whatever else you can think that we put in here is it kind of a process that you pretty much know what you're doing or as you're working through it you start making some adjustments and massaging it a little bit yes yeah start getting there start whittling right so you see you start out you know you want to make a console run from the front to the back you make your pattern and then after that once you start setting things in there you may make some fine-tuning to that yeah some of our some of our best works you come from a mistake or something right I cover that up it's like wow I'm glad that with like that song right that's one thing about custom you can figure it out as you go and make it that usually turns out better all right well cool I mean that's uh doesn't need to see that y'all start with a piece of cardboard several pieces of cardboard actually you tape together yeah you just crawl in here and start gluing sheets together and start whittling now is this council gonna run up to the seat in the back or just - yeah it's in the middle we'll have a separate space they'll come down between the two seats so it'll look like buckets okay I have made them all in one piece con so if it's a whole lot easier on a convertible right I got you alright cool Hans it usually take to make one of these about three days usually coming hours so you're not working on every 30 days straight are you 25 hours holy smokes just for the council I've spent two weeks on real everyday like some really crazy console flip-down DVD screens in it yeah actually there's another Camaro same body style 68 Camaro cool yes it's a lot of work all right we'll follow the process through what's next now you're gonna transfer this over on that PVC yep it's gonna be cut out PVC then we'll start could get some blocks and take the two blocks and cut those together screw it all together and then we'll make science for it okay it's easy to make one but you gotta remember you gotta cover it to hide all your edges of your leather and so you got to be thinking a couple steps ahead as you're making onto yeah we've done a few of so you know what not to do that's right all right cool well we'll check back in with you and see how it's going well hope so all right brother thanks what are you doing now there Tim boom we made that cardboard turn into plastic that's cool all right so you just laid those cardboard pieces on there cut them out of this what's that stuff called PVC foam sheet all right and now what are you doing you're putting braces in there we well I had to router these edges over on the bed Mabel the bottom is for the match the contour the transmission hump rounded the tops over and then we cut these too but uh yeah to buy and then screw those in Justin where we think it's gonna be linearly always so the door will slide easily at least these blocks here have to all be the exact same length so you got to keep everything square obviously because it gets wider or narrower or that yeah that door Oh jam up or get floppy this doesn't slide smoothly then we'll get wider just to match him with this - insert here so door the door will come back from about right in here and sliding back well that'd be storage down in there then yeah you drop at least where you can put a Ruger super blackhawk okay yeah it's a good conceal places yeah keep that a functional maybe a couple extra hiding spots right and try to get it to where it all actually come back out so I'm cover it all right so it's not mounted in there you're gonna you're doing you're putting these braces in while they're in the car so you can get an exact fit to the car custom fit tailored to the floor and then it's slide out like such and then what will you do cover in leather yeah then prettification process okay we start stretching some pad on it all right well cool we'll check back with you when you're ready to do that all right Tim how are you brother all right not too bad how's that console coming well it's one four days later so we're still well now it's now to be fair you've been waiting on leather for a day yeah well we're still waiting well we had we finished up the seat so we had enough to where I can start putting out something to the side let's don't have for the centerpiece - case I got that covered a little while ago so once you get once you get it put together then you put another piece what's this black stuff you put on here this is the 8 inch PVC sheet I put it on there then give this little sculpting line right here and mainly cover the screws for the little box so it keeps that off space right so I guess yeah yeah but there'd be no reason you'd have to get in there and adjust those braces or anything like that after this point no that's done yeah there hope you get it right yeah that's right and then this here you'll dress that up I'll get the top and then you've sprayed it with glue what kind of glue do you use vinyl top adhesive okay put it on there let it tack up real good this took a while to get it all exactly fits all right cool ya know it looks like it's now it's got a cover it what's this big hole gonna be poor up here that's okay I mean here's our radio control alright Sony remote cool I'll go in there so got a pretty good bit of room yeah yeah yeah I think you can lay a pistol in there yes little 380 or something like that so I got our gauges in there little holes for the when they come in right dawn shipping on everything right alright that's the thing about it you're gonna work as fast as the parts get here yeah I've got blue start stacking up on Kevin Sumlin it's all gonna be the dark blue dark blue okay all right well cool well I'll stick around and watch you apply some of that letter leather if you don't mind when it gets tacked up we'll all right brother that turned out nice voila so you put one piece of leather and then you come you come around here with a tool in dumb tool and tucking tool tuck it in like such I got you then they hides all our screw hands here and then that's beautiful no no that's beautiful that was cool that's cute yeah yeah yeah let's that's what you do the other side one sad yeah that's the thing too with the glue you gotta let you view spray done then you let it tack up so you can't do it like when it's wet that's how you learn early on to let this he do something like such you're gonna have enough to I just nope whether these two sides all this stuff is hand-cut so it's not like he lays it out and you see them laser machines get all the pieces out of one hide the best they can now folks I mean how it works around here stay you can still work how long does it take to dry before it's for its good forever you how it'll be yeah the morning yeah well the bond increases with age it says on there so okay face it's on there weaker so you can try to pull that stuff back and we'll come with it yeah I know I hope do that before the trick you work down in this curve so I can get it around here like this on this little notches or something yeah really cuts are feeding it back in you see all that technical terms he's using really relief cuts yeah that's it Tim's trying to embarrass me makes me sound like I'm talking about a little notches normally cuts well everybody knows something you don't pay attention really yeah I don't know anything well I don't know anybody you ever seen my videos I don't know nothin either people tell you I get told every day you get the view that yeah well you know as long as there's some people out there more people appreciate it then don't so that's what I got to go well I'm surprised we make as me people hitting people happy I don't y'all a real craftsman ye right you would think that there'd be plenty of monters didn't think that was uh they weren't happy but pretty much they're all happy a lot more than I thought with you make happy for some of them act happy when they're in here yeah you find that real quick people go to show you talk about you well they really like you're not yeah that's why I told grip has a divorce is when they just come pick their hot rod up you don't ever hear from them again right well you've had someone can't we didn't know if they like this or not and then I can't bringing cars and that's what tells you they like is when they bring another one bring them cars and bringing friends with bars so I guess that's a good sign can't always read them easier to cut a little deeper if you need it it's amazing is you're able to pull on that like you are and it still keeps that creasing it that you got on the other yeah put a lot of blue in there and let it in factor in these shapes when you're making it so you don't get too sharp of a curve right paint yourself into a corner i guy see you don't come up with something that's impossible to cover yeah there's always a way to fix it is just something I'll have their yards have been you fix your mistakes yeah that's right how will you hide them say they're some of our best works been hiding mistakes the Nathans 2d could or no stretch don't fall the leather be right there that's the worst thing okay long time you don't see later on table you look it all over and you get it stretched on you don't know any has you stretch it the applause do anymore problem was that it was a bad man especially on the door panel or something right there right in your face top of the door or something can't have that - bed right there on around over the gauges where you're looking out over the window really learn too much for man push the leather companies to say that's natural music goats running it's not a flaw it's natural you win this looks like it's gonna do if it helps having good leather stretches renewed attack good time to bond to that plastic so it don't lift back up if you do it too soon pull your leather back up and it makes a mess you learn the hard way yeah you've been doing this how long as 20 years or so well learn what not to do make sure when you're buying expensive leather yeah how much for one of those skins you know I mean I guess depends I guess but what's in the price range 250 to 1500 really I mean it's just depends on what kind no diminution is an answer yeah I mean of course the master are the more expensive hands have fewer flaws so it's wrong to use do they grade them or something yeah of course you can you can work with the cheaper ones you just got to work around the flaw but if it's something like a big panel that needs no flaws in it then about one that doesn't have as many flowers look further to do the insert okay I'm go ahead and bolted in the Carson look at our lights coming in wire that up now I set this in this centerpiece will just be removable okay wouldn't put it in after the fact course I'll leave it life gets two in case you want to get in there work on any of your wine you just pull that centerpiece that will have more seats and the console and all that I got Rick makes it a little more functional right down the road all right we try to think of think ahead like a head if I was a car owner having to get back in there and you're in another state yeah of course they call up and say you remember how you did so and so nice I want to remember the car but yeah you're not reinvent the wheel every time you do out terrier but they're all unique in one way or another this won't fit another 68 Firebird right be similar right and got time for organization got cars to do alright play me in my kitchen yeah so I was prepared I could put a good cooking video together right got seats done for yeah those are nice right once you see them - all the wrinkles and everything that's gotta go good you did to us no Dave did OC take the seats he'd be here bragging about me getting birthday parties sure sometimes you get it like the next morning and the other times they lose weight a week later to build plenty of cars work on oh yeah wait I still gonna make this the console it goes up between the back buckas work on that I run out of something on this console we've done a bunch of different ways over the years but this is the way that seems to be the best bang for the buck as far as strength and speed no it looks beautiful I mean I love these consoles I think that's one of the things about your interiors although most of those console agility run from the front to the back you know make buckets in the back I think that's just cool yeah that's what most people want was the super works I call it yeah everyone's want somebody wants to a bench in the back but sure there's nothing wrong with the bench especially home kids or grandkids in it but yeah most people say they'll never be anybody in the back no more than two you know but you know what person watches I wouldn't want to be in the back seat I want to be in the back seat year cars because they get those condos bucket seats back tell you look comfortable well you can see I make these things coming if you could sit on the console if you needed to something that's amazing back seat so I said it doesn't look good it's built with quality and solid - oh yeah yeah it's strong right it's kind of bearson if somebody comes back and said why did this fall apart but not that I've had that happen yet because you over build them right on what takes back quality not just the good-looking probably probably - that's right yeah fortune cookie or something let's write that one down that's right nice job people sometimes they get painted they'll build some type of console and offended know I've seen those coming here - that's impersonal but yeah you gotta put your name on it in the end well I'll get out of your way and I'll let you finish working that leather that's looking good I'll come back and check it out when you get it done more leather right and then you're gonna do you've done here's the lid and then the panel that goes in the middle you're gonna do the same way you're doing this it is wrap it in leather that's that piece oh so you'll cover the inside - oh yeah all of this somewhere gets that takes more time with that yeah we think so yeah make that course that's one thing you can make a consult you gotta remember to make it coverable right so this piece comes out and drops out the bottom so it'll move in and out right and it'll all be the same color then I'll be leather yeah yes are you try to make it leather on the inside cool or something all right brother I appreciate you let me come on get in your way and uh shoot you're making a council so I'm excited to see when it's done and in the car that's the next time we'll check back with you maybe tomorrow okey-dokey see you tomorrow then thank you huh hey y'all I thought I would put this as a parting shot here on this console video Tim got it done looks nice brother everything with the lights yeah still waiting on those wait on they're wired and ready to go know that turned out really nice I like how you did that thank you and we did this way so that the seats wouldn't be in and you could see the console that our flow yeah flows all the way up almost like it's made that way all the way back to that what's they called some kind of tree baggies tray and then back around them speakers - very cool open that Center for me that's nice you know it's good can you see it's hard to see that dark colors yeah no yeah there's a little bit but no you'll see it Oh what's good radio remote yeah cupholders yeah cool no you did a nice job thank you engages mounted up there yeah goes up into the - go into the heads no that's cool man good good well I'm excited to see it when it's finished Tim I sure appreciate you give me a time to uh follow you around no welcome I think you're like family I know that I appreciate that well folks there you go that's how you make a console at least that's how a pro auto does it out here hope we all enjoy it and learn something have a good day see you
