let's have a look at how to do an instrument approach brief there's no one correct way to do a brief other than the way that works for you in the cockpit a good brief will include everything you need to review and plan so that when it comes time to fly it you've already been there in your head now here we've been told by atc to expect the ils to runway 2-3 approach at frederick our brief is going to more or less move from the top of the plate to the bottom and from the left to the right let's first confirm we're looking at the right plate this plate covers the ils or localizer approaches for runway 2-3 we're going to be flying the ils so let's be sure to note that let's also look at the chart currency to make sure that chart hasn't expired if you're watching this video in instrument ground school then this chart has definitely expired but at press time it was still good let's next move down to the nav8 information this ils approach will use the localizer frequency on 110.3 and involve an approach course of 229 degrees we can set that into our avionics in the cessna here first on the garmin 530 which has the nav 1 we'll move down to vlook set the frequency 110.3 and move that to the active frequency make sure we're on vlog mode by hitting cdi also notice the vor receiver on the top left of the screen should read nav and we can identify the station by tuning in on nav1 on the audio panel we should hear the morse identifier for the localizer let's also set the inbound course of 229 degrees into the vor receiver next let's brief the landing information we have available runway landing distance touchdown zone elevation and airport elevation we should already be familiar with our aircraft's required landing distance from our pre-flight planning having looked at the performance information in the poh to ensure we have enough runway on this approach our cessna should be able to handle the almost six thousand feet of runway here with no trouble next let's look at the procedure notes to see if anything applies to us no circling allowed at night helicopter visibility we don't care about ah for inoperative approach lighting system or als we'll need to change our visibility to one and an eighth statute miles since we're in a category a aircraft we'd know about inoperative lighting by listening to the adis next let's have a look at the approach lighting use on this runway this is an odow's or omnidirectional approach lighting system there's a diagram here too that will give us an idea of what the lighting will actually look like as we fly the approach on shore final it's not a bad idea to review this in very poor visibility it's nice to know what kind of assistance the lighting will give us when we get close to the runway now let's set up our communications we'll work left to right first step is to get the aedes information on 124.875 i like to put that in my com2 so i can keep my primary frequency active and listen to both next we'll look at our approach and tower frequencies potomac approaches on 126.1 so we'll make sure that's in most of the time we'd already be talking to the approach controller at this point so there might not be a need to set this up but later on when you're flying the big jets you might be talking to a center controller first when you brief in this and need to cue up approach on a standby frequency since that's not the case on this flight and we're already talking a potomac approach we can set frederick tower on com1 standby on 132.4 a lot of times when you're flying ifr you'll be given a off and just told the contact tower without being provided the frequency since it's assumed that you've done so in your brief so be careful with that there's a star next to the tower which indicates part-time operations so consult the chart supplement for hours over here's the rest of the frequencies you could set ground on com1 standby after you've you've switched over to tower some people put ground on com2 it's up to you there are clearance delivery frequencies for closing the flight plan if the tower is closed or filing a new flight plan after landing and a separate unicom frequency for services probably no need to brief these or set them into our comms alright let's get into the nitty gritty and brief our approach entry there are two initial approach fixes one at numbi and one at the westminster vor so it depends where we're arriving from which we'll use let's say we're approaching from the south we might be told to proceed to numbie notice the race track pattern indicating a hold in lieu of procedure turn what we'll need to do is fly to numbi make a parallel entry by turning to the outbound course of 049 degrees then make a right turn to intercept the localizer and fly inbound on the approach let's say we're approaching from the northeast and we're told to proceed direct to the westminster vor we'll fly to the vor fly the feeder root course of 295 degrees until intercepting the localizer at numbie then turn inbound on the approach because the westminster vor is part of this approach we'll need to set that up too so let's put it in our nav too we could set the feeder course of 295 into our receiver or proceed direct whatever the case may be okay let's have a look at the profile view now to brief the altitudes for the approach one thing i always do when i brief an approach is to say whether it's going to be flown as a precision or a non-precision approach because that's going to determine how we fly the altitudes when we configure and when we go missed this is the ils approach which is a precision approach again i always say which it is when i brief so the altitudes are pretty straightforward we'll start at our altitude assigned by atc when we're cleared for the approach somewhere between 2008 and 4500 feet once we intercept the glide slope we'll configure for the approach and descend down following the glideslope when we arrive at our decision altitude we will decide whether to continue the approach down to the runway or execute a missed approach let's look at how we brief this if it were the localizer only approach so this is a non-precision approach changes how we fly it now we start at our initial assigned altitude after passing number intersection drop down to 2200 after fisan down to 1700 ricky is our final approach fix after which we'll drop down again you don't need to brief every step down especially on these approaches with many intermediate fixes but maybe at least brief the final approach fix in mda this approach doesn't have a defined missed approach point so we can go missed when we decide notice how different the brief is whether we're flying a precision or non-precision approach so make sure you identify what kind of approach you're flying as you brief now let's look at our minimums again it depends if we're flying the ils or low cure the ils has a decision altitude of 689 feet and required visibility of one statute miles so we'd make sure the adis report calls for weather that's better than that if we were flying the loc approach the mda is 1080 feet and required visibility is only three-fourths of a mile for our category a cessna it's interesting on this approach the non-precision visibility requirement is more restrictive than the precision requirement usually it's the other way around why do you think this might be it's kind of a special case here so definite brownie points if you can get this i had to ask too so i don't feel bad anyways also notice that if we can identify the zibat intersection we're allowed to drop down to an mda of 1020 feet last but definitely not least let's brief the missed approach there's three depictions of the missed approach on this plate so let's look at them all the first action is to start a straight out climb to 1 300 feet once there we'll continue the climb in a left turn up to 2800 feet intercepting the 048 radial of the frederic vor which we'll also want to have on our standby frequency on nav2 we'll track that radial until we get to numbi make a parallel or teardrop entry and hold so that's our approach brief for this ils-23 of frederick again tailor it so that it works for you the point is to get everything prepared on this approach when it comes to instrument flying you never want your plane to be in a situation your head hasn't already been in and that's why we do this brief pick up some more instrument approach plates and practice briefing on your own
