finding a good deal on last minute flights can be difficult but it's not impossible in today's video I'll be revealing industry secrets and clever strategies that I've picked up after booking hundreds of flights online so that you can score the best travel deals the next time you fly [Music] a long flight always start by searching for a round-trip ticket as opposed to searching for two one-way tickets take a look at this example a round-trip ticket from New York to Amsterdam costs 987 dollars whereas a one-way ticket just from New York to Amsterdam stands at 972 dollars that's a 15 difference and with the first option you're getting two flights instead of just one searching for round trip tickets can often be cheaper because airlines offer discounted rates for a two-way Journey as a way to encourage passenger loyalty and secure the booking for both the departure and the arrival legs of the trip this is also due to how Airline fare rules and systems are set up certain lower Fair classes may only be available for round-trip purchases however this isn't a universal rule low-cost carriers and budget Airlines often price their one-way and round-trip flights simply as 2 1 one-way segments so it's always worth checking both the one way and the round trip options always search for flights one passenger at a time Airlines divide seats into Fair buckets each with a different price when you search for multiple tickets the price shown is the cheapest bucket that has enough seats for everyone so if there is only one seat left in the lowest price bucket you won't see that price if you're searching for two tickets instead you'll see the price for the next most expensive bucket that can accommodate both passengers by searching just one passenger at a time you may find cheaper fares available for part of your group sometimes Fair buckets also have only one cheaper Ticket available at a time but then once you book that ticket the fare bucket is refilled and you can then book a second ticket at the cheaper price as well you may also want to consider using booking portals to find exclusive deals that are not available elsewhere major credit card companies like American Express capital total one Chase and City have their own travel portals offering unique deals for last minute flight car and even hotel bookings when I surprised my parents in Portugal a couple of months ago I booked the flight hours prior to departure with a fantastic last minute flight deal from the chase booking portal it was by far the best deal that I could find anywhere on the internet and I was able to secure the flight for only 35 000 points instead of the usual seventy thousand points this was a fantastic deal for a long-haul flight from North America to Europe you're probably watching this video because you have a last minute trip and a flight that you need to book let us know down in the comments how soon you're hoping to fly out hopefully it's longer than a few hours like in my case when I flew to Portugal another tip when booking a last minute flight would be to check multiple departure and multiple arrival airports many cities have multiple airports nearby for example if you live in New York City check flights that are departing from JFK Newark and LaGuardia Airport the same concept applies in Reverse if you are traveling to New York City where you could consider landing at any of these three airports not just JFK and then if you needed to you could commute to the City Center by public transit and then consider this strategic approach if you are looking for a last minute flight to Europe instead of booking a flight directly to a final destination consider flying into a major European International hub first Europe's extensive connectivity means that you can score remarkably cheap flights between countries sometimes costing as little as ten dollars for a ticket to leverage this strategy most effectively use the explore feature on Google flights by putting in your travel dates you can quickly identify the cheapest airports to fly into for example if your ultimate destination is Athens Greece instead of getting a direct flight from New York to Athens think about first flying into a major European Hub like Paris or London and from there you'll probably be able to book an inexpensive flight with a European airline that is going to take you the rest of the way to Athens this is often much less expensive than if you had searched directly from New York all the way to Athens this strategy also works well if you're traveling to Asia as you can often find cheap flights between countries in that region of the world as well when it comes to booking last minute flights you'll want to be extra careful to avoid mistakes that are going to end up costing you time and money stay tuned as in a few days I'll be posting a video with the biggest red flags to look out for when booking a last minute ticket in the meantime you'll definitely want to check out the beginner and the advanced tutorials that I have on Google flights down in the description safe travels and best of luck with your flight bookings bye
