watch all them guys in the back back here this is seminars going to be a little bit different is going to feel a bit casual a little bit right down front maybe a little bit Ross honest unrehearsed you gotta watch out when I'm here never know what's going to happen sit these colors back here I mean if we've been doing them on the tank today and unforced couple down there sometime I ought to just get down here with you guys a kiss popcorn a love letter you like that we're going to open this and up series happen think we doing this once the other other got well it's a good case got clapping for that I'm over that today you almost getting flat with me we're going to kind of call this more of a raw seminar this is good pretty much on a personal level number to you straight how I feel when I did a little bit of that and I want to get out here and family questions it'll bit easier to talk about what we're going to do and anything fishing wise you know I'm here working today and I'm checking everybody out of watching everything going on I'm kind of on Facebook and watch my friends practice for the class if you guys qualified and I start taking a lining and then I keep coming across the same amount of questions a lot of people that come up tonight in our life you know if you're going to give advice to young peers or college kids looking to be and that's a very common question and you can you decide a lot of things but sometime I've said I kind of think about you know really if I asked you guys if you go to Shoji is going to give a young get advice to do anything what would it be you don't I start thinking before I give somebody false advice or or lead them down the son of their own Road when I'm talking to a school kids I've kind of come to the realization that it ain't wrong to tell the truth it really ain't it ain't wrong to say what it what fishing is capable of what it takes to make it I used to frown on that if we said much about it and how to guys but just oh they said you come talk to my high school class you know that that they're all finished high school fishing team I thought sure I'll be glad to I said under one condition I said you let me tell him the truth he said do what I was yeah I want you telling the truth I said now I'm not about fishing us did you let me tell him the truth he said ok so they muster say we had us the culture shock that they had the last bit because I think it was high school kids coming out of the college kids coming out I see a lot of this how do we get sponsors where do we go how do I get better and one of the things that I see missing that I thought that kind of bothers me really when I look at I don't see a lot of walk to anymore I mean I'm just going to call balls and strikes this is a very wrong seminar I don't see the desire I don't see the sacrifice I don't see I don't see it in a lot of people they come them in there so my kid wants to fish for a living I said well let me talk to let me sit I'm talk to and the questions I would ask you to son if you want to fish forever yes sir I'd love to fish for a living okay you got the desire down pat I setup are you willing to sacrifice really sacrifice things that you love to do to accomplish what you want to do oh absolutely I said well let me let me tell you what I'm talking about to make it to this level we're obviously standing up here is that only classic stage the standing where your favorite angle would stand on the biggest stage of the world you have to understand what was sacrificed in front of them to get there you see the finished product but you don't see the feel when it's getting plowed and I said example Ben when you get out of high school and all your buddies just going to the concerts that you're going here I said that one guy you got a east train and he's fishing he's fishing he's fishing I said when I was 17 18 19 20 years old every minute I had off work I fished fishing I wasn't no good at it and the worst I felt like I want that the more I fished and this kids looking at me I said see son I said yes sir I want to just fill the gaps and to tell you that you can you through they can't do anything in your life you want to do I'm a prime example I'm sitting here today talking to you guys I've been around the country speaking this year I'm 20 years in the profession of ice fishing I've won a little over three million dollars I want to talk highest paid angers with world I don't have a college education never went to college Keynes failed College dated a girl went to college for about two months God's honest truth soon as I found out I was there had to go home barely graduated high school I don't have a marketing degree I don't I'm Harley I mean everything that I've learned I've learned on my own and people say yeah but you know you might have come from money I ain't telling you in this poll because the poor people had cars we walked a lot when I was kid I want to there's a big difference of being poor and being broke and it ain't cause your parents didn't want it or didn't have it or didn't work for you they do everything a good player my parents didn't have a credit card of handing them in say hey you want to go fishing son I'll paint your interface you go around the world you do what you want to do if you catch your dreams it'll be fine my daddy said if you want a fish and if it's your crazy dream and you think you good enough you can work on that when you get done working for me so not only did I pursue a dream behind what he had me do it I never lost focus that this is not one of the tour off where I wanted to be and I tell kids that I said you got to understand that I can le come from inner city I can Delhi was a DJ in a club I can le didn't have a father figure in his life these guys come and beat the odds against so when you go to the Bassmaster Classic what I see behind the stage and what you see in front of stage may be different because I see a guy that I know where you come from and I tell kids that you've got to understand to get anything in life whether you want to be a football player baseball player it doesn't matter that sacrifice has to be made you have to say to be number one I'm on a trade guys Aloha I trained you know and uh my nephew plays college football plays division 1 football he's pretty good athlete he really is God gave me a lot of size he's a 6 5 325 330 big kid I'm not done he's got the best attitude does it make me mad it kills me because he'll call me when a pep talk you called me for a pep talk I'm bout to give me one he said I am trying and if every thumpety I'm trying I said no you know I said you need to be the kid that turns the lights on in the gym in the morning when everybody else is coming to work out that's the kid you need to be you the first one there coach ain't got to tell you to go try I said that's the guy worry about the guy that to God it works out what nobody's looking you got a trains when nobody cares die angler who fishes in the rain because it's the only 20 minutes he's got the fish to get better that's the guy that I worry about I don't worry about the guy that says oh I'd like to get a few sponsors that they don't go my way I'll go home he doesn't concern me but that guy that fights when there's no need to fight when you beat him so bad the first day of the tournament that he's no physically possible way he can get a check but on day two he's fishing like it's the last day he's ever gonna fish in his life I mentally make a note of that guy and say that's a competitor because he doesn't know lose you might have beaten him that day but he hasn't lost the battle he kids are looking at me like what what I don't get it I was like you understand a bass fishing is possibly the losing the sport you will ever play I'll give you some statistics just digit exactly I always say that word I told you I didn't go to college I went by college a lot but we work down below it so I tell everybody our Thomas and I went in University of Alabama about three months I said when we get him House bill I had to come home I've done working down there Kevin VanDam we talked about earlier we could say let's use an example probably the best fisherman in the world has the highest winning record per tournaments won her tournaments pitched to what he's won if he was a major league baseball player Kevin VanDam will be batting about nine percent not 99 399 so understanding that 91% of time he fielded the object he was trying to do which was win the tournament now think about that what other sport out there loses ninety-one percent of the time and still can be deemed the best in the world that's an attitude that that guy has that you can't shake no matter how many times he's lost he puts that boat in water in today's the day that I'm gonna prove I'm number one I've argued with this with some people from ESPN they said fast fishermen are really probably not athletes I said okay I said I'll play you a game and I'll do the test they put up they put the strap on your chance to get risk and they said we're going to monitor how many calories you burn it at nine argue that you guys probably on athletes in a nine-hour tournament their temperature was 50 degrees too high about 60 100 calories and 9 hours 60 100 my health guy said you could eat Blaine table sugar did not get fat at the mentality of the way that you're working and how your body's burning energy so when we sit back down yes Beauty still maybe we overlooked the fact I said you don't understand we don't have a coach I got somebody called timeout say oh let's call a timeout oh gee he's he's fishing in a stripper place and then bass is gone I'm gonna call him out I'm gonna go get him we're gonna bring it over here he's gonna watch a game table what they do it went to catching him and he's gonna take back off again I don't have that I don't have a DL listen if I get hurt I'll lose concert that that's simple I break my leg and I can't fish I lose money you've never seen nobody substitute I've seen guys play hurt I mean they want to know what's it like to play her I was a bum out behind Kevin VanDam two years ago and he would push his helmet up and throw up straight out the helmet all over the project or both puking with the flu pull the hammer down when fish all day I made a check that's play it hurt you don't see nobody in the NFL pushing that helmet up at Dukan on sidelines when they hurt they hurt I said the mentality that a bass fisherman has to climb the mountain every day is so underestimated by most athletes the way he is driven do when he focuses there's nobody to stop you in your record if you decide to drive the plane in the ground and I I promise and I can wreck while boys don't get me wrong something when I decide not to kill him I decide not to catch it this trust me I know what it's like I'm the only guy hey I have some here I have some records of Assam never be broken I'm one of the first guys to ever win anger of the year without winning the tournament I'm one of the first guys ever win a million dollars without winning a tournament I want a million dollars getting checks that's a lot of checks that's a lot of high-pitch lemons away fifteen pounds that you didn't win but you climbing that ladder most of the parks got everywhere named of the year and zero in the same classic that's right I'd like to introduce the 2002 for angler of the year Gerald's Wendell crowd goes crazy that's right I'm dancing for the donuts oh I got me nothing so this sport is like this so bad space is this huge ride of emotions and to watch guys overcome that I look at the younger generation and I say are you truly prepared to do that this is not all TV and cameras I said and I'm not trying to discourage you I'm trying to lay the foundation to say to be the next Jordan Lee or to be the next Iaconelli or whoever you want to be like or whatever you see yourself being it's not just honey's and butterflies there's a lot of blood lipids I tell everybody the elite series are famous cooks I said cooks I said yep they cook humble pie every day and they serve it to you in a big splatter spoon when you weigh in and they got to the big cup I showed up used to drink it with on the way home because you just lost $20,000 and got pummeled and you was catching up I said this is the most humbling sport you will ever play because we all envision ourselves catching up and being winners on that particular day and you come in and somebody's out pitch to you you got to suck it up say good job good job where's my humble pie like to give me a fist that on the way out of here I mean I go to California last year I drove 51 hours they make some humble pie two days two back-to-back weeks I filled up on humble pie settled in at about seventy second place that's a long 50-yard drive home tapping on the steering wheel going yeah well you got to figure it out get you that guy's going to drive 50 hours home and get out of the truck and that day's over he's got to start all over so when I talk a little bit about score people said man that might be a little deeper a little harsh no it's the it's the bare necessities to where we're at do you have what it takes to to fight the battle do you have what it takes to want to be number one then work and trains and fish and fish because when you get to that level here's the oxymoron and most people are going to say he's crazy the better you get it fishing and the more established you get the less I get the fish I fish less now than I ever have in my life there's no time to fix any more so you got to learn everything you can with your your age because would you become successful and you win the college championship and you move on to the Elite Series then all of a sudden you wake up one day and go I'm so busy I ain't got time to go fishing what are you doing for a living my fish oh let me get this straight you don't have time to go fishing no you don't if you can see the schedule and the hours at the top 15 guys and the Torquay you would say there's no way they're still living there to show every week they're hustling their true hustler huh and I argued with ESPN I said they may be the most disciplined athletes in the world there's no other sport played for nine hour without a stopper break you have the right to eat or 19 most guys choose not to older i get i'm choosing more to eat i tell them all about three minutes each that peanut butter jelly sandwich is going to keep me from winning and i'll just take a loss today i'm only government gives you a break every four hours you get 15 minutes I'm taking mine I'm a windy they can be fighting sparkplug ranches I'm gonna sit down these families and enjoy today I used to not eat at all well used to when I first started I didn't have the money they people we were laughing about that don't last that I was kind of the guy that pitched when I started I slept in my truck a lot like people right about now but it wasn't real cool what I've done it it was very embarrassing because I didn't have the money for a hotel room I just sleep it around i flood my boat into the bathroom at the outhouse where i find a plug it in a service trailer but when you hear trucks getting up I get up in the morning I'll be walking around a farm line well you got here yeah come down and ran a little bit this morning it's going to be a good day sleep around the trucks aren't anything nowhere you know but at that time there was nothing in this world that could be toward what I wanted to do sleeping in that truck or not having the money or eating hoop cheese if anybody know what hoop cheese is you've got hoop cheese you can't hurt it you can buy where I lived in this big old block weigh like 11 pounds for like a dollar you can live on it for a year I would cut that stuff off in that big wagon we don't get them saltine crackers I do cheese breakfast cheese belongs cheese for supper but it never crossed my mind that this wasn't what I wanted to do or maybe I should quit I didn't even think Whitman was an option I had five back surgeries on the third fourth and fifth back surgery when I laid down in the hospital bed he said it would be in your best interest for your long-term health if you'd never get back in the boat again I told my surgeon I said you do your job where the stitches and let me make the decisions okay I said I'm the only guy that you've ever operated on it's probably willing to die to go back to work I said think about that doc think about it if you can let my feet walk if you take for my feet they'll move again I'll fish you don't worry about me I've had five surgeries I'm 46 I still do what I want to do Devin was not going to hinder how I wanted to play the game so when we talk mastery sometimes you don't realize the sacrifice and something was some of the guys made not not just myself talk a little bit about my story it's not me it's a lot of guys ski race lay tile for living that's right late I'll crawl right on his hands and knees inlaid tile dead broke ski didn't have a father in his life had a part ivan ski kind of raised herself on the streets this is a guy to just you wasn't gonna tell him no he knew what he wanted to do I met eat Reese sleeping in the parking lot at Potomac River there's the one who goes back occasionally we've both been doing it 20 years we met he had a white band like a painter I thought he was like a kidnapper something when I stay in my this guy who kidnapped me fit he was sleeping in his fan and I was sleeping out of home 150 that had 300,000 miles over 300,000 nice right she was a beauty about to force on 12 gallon of gas I could make it about 50 miles I do again and that's where skeet not formed our relationship at the still to this day we're great friends but I've a huge respect for him I mean I know where he come from I knew this guy just mr. Hollywood flashy that's really not steep Skeets of God is very driven I'm a driven you can't hardly beat it so a little bit of that without getting too deep into it and guys I think does it take big money to start fishing yeah the entry fees are high now there's no doubt about it it's about 50 gram maybe 25 to 30,000 of travel so I'm eighty thousand before I'll make a cast it's expensive no doubt about it but I didn't have that when I came in that's what I'm telling you don't have to start out so many kids it cause give us say well I need to give me some sponsors and I'm gonna try to make it you need to catch it but they'll find you you worry about catching them and when all the other guys are worried about running around trying to get somebody to do something farm they're going to look over and say who's this kid to won the last four tournaments in a row that's who we want I tell when you're that young you work on your games you fish you fish your fish they'll find you oh they'll find you just actually brothers prime example two kids left College both I'm calling them they found them they found you and to me that's the fairytale story where you could be those they just had to drain the fish this a little bit different seminars else if the you thought I was gonna learn something I'm teaching real quick like you basically when you get down on me you say you have fishing ain't that hard you just got to go throw it out there in line we will pull it back in its the decisions you make in between that and how you handle those situations and that something's not talked about much what feels that what builds that stamina what there was that guy to be able to perform at the highest level and not be rattled most people don't quite see that the ability to do that to hustle and not quit on my mom and dad we laugh now we go to have family reunions sit around my mom and Easter zombie laugh and we look back at my childhood and my day to be laugh and he said I asked they ask me all the time who is your hero growing up did you have a bass fishing hero I bet I my daddy I said of course Bassmasters HTS ourselves we didn't have cable TV or a tradition so I was in my early 20s 21 to 23 years old I've never seen cable TV so I didn't even know the Bassmasters existed and I surely didn't have time to read no magazine so I didn't know who Kevin VanDam was I didn't know who reclone was nor did I care I knew my daddy in aluminum boat in the local river could beat you senseless with a white man's Spenard I wanted to be able to catch him like my daddy so when I went out on treadle everybody was like that's any bride I'll be like who's that I mean I was just told how is this done to them yeah I truly didn't know the only way the first I'd ever seen fish was my father I grew up on a farm we didn't have pirate last folks I was in my 20s with this type of lumina boats I probably started aluminum boat anybody here know how to truly scum even though that's is scuttling a boat that's when you take one hand and twist your wrist or rotated you never make a noise in the water that lemon are fun to just go straight down the river my daddy had a harness about that back around when he was 40 years old he can hold that paddle and do that boat it was like running a motor guy told water straight down to Manteca fish left that he real that thing and that's when he let me go I'd get tired he cooked the water to make of the fool I get in trouble if I ease it up or smooth so I mean growing up I didn't see that side of Bassmasters that you can see now I didn't have the stage I just didn't know it you know I didn't know any different but I knew when I started fishing I loved it and I knew I wasn't going to stop and they asked if you have a plan you know did you have this because everybody said I wanted the fish I hated framing now does anybody in here Carver that's what I don't I hate it baby so why you Fisher whorehouse sickles I hate your framing house my uncles are Kraemer my daddy was a house primer my brother was a house framer I hated it I started fishing them a little tournaments right after I got out of school and I went fishing or Tuesday night tournament we want $200 being a buddy of mine I can remember riding home if I could hang on I just fish for hours we want $200 I said they got troubles I didn't know nothing but we were fishing every night from then on out so I would frame houses all day a fish all night for the first couple years I would fish four or five nights a week and if you've ever been Alabama summer time you know it's about 135 degrees at 8:00 a.m. in the morning the humidity is like a thousand because like somebody just dipped you jelly you just burned it up so when you bring houses you work for 6:00 to 2:00 every day so for 6:00 to 2:00 we frame houses I go home get the boat go back fish we fished with 5:30 or some evenings to 6:00 to 11:00 for 5:30 to leaven so every evening I fished at a different lake and for the first couple of years my my fishing when I started I literally bankrolled my opportunity into the bias office by fishing what we call fruit jar terms and they still say why they don't fruit to our Congress because they would literally put the money in a fruit jar you have 25 posts show up really where I learned many money it was so funny I just hated fish $150,000 I can member driving back home on I went to the sign bank you know when your frame houses had a little bank I went to there with every Friday a little chick in there you know below $300 whatever it was he's he's a chicken and a little girl she was cute she with him give me a sucker you just put your check in another deal and you've gone to the house I couldn't wait to get back to garden devil if I might roll down out of that Bank I rolled in there not to slid that I don't know whether she looked at that check she loved me that check I said I want my sucker and my brother women I said I want my sucker and I want my sucker now been coming here for years giving you 300 odd I want my sucker you know and that was really my break that set everything off you know I won the money and I put the money up and started trying to fish perfection and having qualified so people always want to know the backdrop of the story where the hangar come from I come from a 100 acre farm in locust fork al Alabama we were truck farmers and car parts that's pretty that's a pretty rough way to make a living my bad 74 still living still wakes up every morning at 4:00 a.m. every morning I could call my dad in the morning at 4 a.m. and he'll answer the phone it's those at rates and if he calls me at 6:00 and the phone rings three times the first thing they say you don't sleep your life away you can get up you lazy what's problem my daddy never knew nothing but one thing work work well when I was growing up I didn't understand at that time where that was going to play a factor of my profession no idea I know we just work if we could hey we hold we did our whole farm we broke the ground by hand planted the brother ground with the tractor you done everything else by hands I've hold about 6,000 miles in my life oh hey your picket you'll hate my mom's new if I ever get off this phone it's like it's like I said I ever get off this farm they ever have any money I ain't never eaten vegetables again as long as I live she said what I said I'm not because all we ever have a Sprott overpriced watch anything to think of fry the south and you picked it to feel that's what we ate every night because this is yours still to this day I need your places I go right over
