everybody says be unique but have you ever asked why for real have you ever asked does it make sense to create unique music let's see what some of the best producers in the world have to say fox stevenson make music for you let's be real in a world where anybody can produce and distribute music there's a lot of noise so what's one way to compete be you you're literally the only person in the world who can do that best you're not supposed to chase uniqueness it comes from you making decisions purely based on yourself because you know what's unique your brain you don't have the same influence as anybody else all of you all of you here you don't have the same influences as anyone else you might share influences but your parents listen to music that someone else's parents didn't listen to all of you people have your own ideas and you need to remember that because that's actually how you become unique in music is by making what you want to hear because only you want to hear exactly what you want to hear it's all subconscious like the music you like is based on the music you've liked before is based on the music you liked before it based on the music that you're you have fond memories of as a kid etc etc no one else has that experience so can you use it use your own ears oh well this will disciple like this i will liquidity like this will monster cut like this that love those people don't make music for them make music for you zed don't be avicii much love to avicii but this is not about avicii at all this is about trying to be anyone that is not you because if you try to copy someone else you'll always be that off-brand cereal close but never as good okay honest feedback if this came out six years ago i would have said wow this is actually really fresh sounding i feel like there's too much of that in the world to do now um i think your inspiration was probably you know avicii who was the greatest at that um to me an amazing example of nothing wrong with it there's nothing wrong with the song but i also won't remember it after the stream people ask what they can do when they're up and coming and how to help start their career by making stuff that's different if you just do the same thing everybody else does what the point to listen to that there's already a million that did the same thing okay so being unique has value but how high should you jump do you need to reinvent the genre or just add a little twist honestly this question is a whole video in itself but for now if you just want a career in music don't over complicate it and don't forget the basics as ian says give people a reason to care what do you suggest for producers who are making music but don't know how to get to the next step like taking projects or signing a label yeah find your sound and stuff like that but this is like a rule of thumb at this point just give people a reason to care like don't think that you know stacking a bunch of splice loops is gonna make you a producer the playing field is level for everyone now it doesn't take as much as it used to to get into music production so like give people a reason to care like do something that doesn't just sound exactly like the music you listen to you're like i want to be a trap producer and then you just make like the same old trap beats yeah maybe you'll get some placements and but like how much cooler would be to like further the genre and like stand out a little bit this girl claudia valentino that i'm working with we're always talking about like yeah this has been done but how do we push it you know i've never heard this on radio before let's try this and like obviously you got to be responsible a little bit but you know for the most part you just got to give people a reason to care you got to do something different like i never heard that before yeah that's hard that's hard you might be thinking how do i be unique when i still struggle to finish music that i love and i want to be real with you it's not easy it just takes time to find your creative voice after years of stressing about the whole find your sound question here's a way of thinking that's really helped me now i just focus on being the creator creating output producing now and sorting later most importantly i try to leave the question of finding my sound out of the creative process and answer it after making music that's helped me bring less doubt into the creative process and not overthink everything it may seem like a subtle shift but it really has helped me focus on the only thing that matters during the creative process which is creating the best music possible as jsgar says all you want to focus on is the end product doesn't matter how you get to the end product it's all about the end product really um for example i'm using uh downlifters here that are from cymatics some people might be like yo don't use those those downlifters because they're overused if you're making music for normal people they don't really care they just care about the end result if it sounds good do it that's it don't think about it twice make the music that you wish you could listen to then after making the music i try to make sense of it all but three questions what comes easy to me what genres do i enjoy making and what genres do i enjoy finishing the thinking is to try to make finishing songs fun and easy so that you just create a ton of music over time you should be able to notice patterns genres drums sound design whatever finding music that is uniquely you and get closer and closer to your signature sound thanks for watching and see you soon you
