there are currently over 18 different defenses inside of Clash of Clans and they all have their special places and uses in the game but there's one defense which has really just gotten worse over time and that is the mortar despite never having receive the single Nerf the mortar just seems to get worse the more you progress in the game and today we're going to be going over the history of the mortar the multiple failed attempts by super to save it and just why it seems to have missed the mark the m is one of the five original defenses that came out with the game but it wasn't unlockable until 103 and at this town hall the mortar was quite useful in fact it was probably the best and most important defense in your village this is because you could only use ground troops at Town out three and the most popular attack strategy by far was the bar attack which as you know consists of just a ton of barbarians and archers and is a pretty spammy attack strategy and there were now enough walls and structures to keep the moror protected towards the center of the base by the town hall and it would be really effective at hurting and killing large groups of troops on the outside of the walls because of its Splash damage plus it was the only defense that did Splash damage at the time and at that t all level well except for the bombs but those weren't all that useful anyways and a few months later the mortar also got a bit of a buff so that if its current Target got Ked killed it will just pick a new Target instead of restarting the whole attacking cycle like it did before and that made it even more efficient however once you got to town hall 4 the balloons will be introduced and this was the first troop in the game that the mortar just could do nothing against similar with the Canon but I mean the situation is with all ground only defenses so it will be unfair to call the motar useless just yet off of this one thing but it definitely plays a factor the mortar was still about just as useful Against The Bu strategy though at Town 4 and it was more or less the same at Town 5 as the Wizards didn't really change up the situation too much instead of the bar strategy people tend to move a bit more towards the Giants and Wizards and the mortar essentially play the same role and that it was good at dealing Splash damage to both the Giants and the Wizards but it would be a tunel six that the mortars kind of took a big hit well first of all you could now build a second mortar in your base which was obviously good but there was also something else that was unlocked the tunel 6 that was bad for the mortars and that was the healers they were kind of like a direct counter to the mortars and asens just erased the progress of the mortars because if a Mt hit one group of troops then the healers could just heal them back up since the healers also do Splash damage so to say when they heal other troops so both of them just kind of cancel each other out plus the mort can't attack the healers this will be a really good way of making groups of Giants or Wizards last longer in certain situations where the other defenses were either just not there like the air defense or if they were also busy attacking their troops instead of the healers such as the wizard towers or Archer Towers plus you also unlock the heal Spells at 10 six which also obviously worked really well for healing up groups of troops that have been affected by the mortars or by bombs and and overall I'd say Town Hall 6 was kind of the beginning of their downfall but it was still nowhere near as drastic as some of the other Town Halls also I know that there is the argument that the Cannons were also very similar since they were also ground only defense but I think the biggest difference is that the Cannons dealt more damage and there were more of them but more importantly the Cannons actually hit every shot unlike the mortar which could literally just miss and this problem would get even worse as attacks got faster paced but we'll talk more about that later on in the video but now we're on to tanel 7 and I feel like this is quite obvious as everyone knows unlock dragons at this town hall the mortars as well as what seem like pretty much every single defense would just kind of end up feeling useless with the whole Mass dragons in balloon strategies and this was especially worse for ground only defenses as they were completely useless so I won't really count this against the mortar as it pretty much made every defense useless in certain attacks but now we're on to Town Hall 8 and this is also where you see the mortars got a considerable buff so in the first two or so years of the game there were only three motors available with the third one being unlocked at 10 7 but in October of 2014 supercell added a fourth motor into the game which would become unlocked at 108 and that would end up being the last motor you unlocked in the game as the number still four at time tanel 16 which is the current Max but at the time this was a considerable buff as it made sure you could now almost cover your entire base with the mortars due to their large radius which in turn should theoretically make them better overall and well this kind of worked you see the motors have two big problems with them being the fact that troops can L just run away before the motor hits them and also that the motors just don't really do that much damage and are really ineffective against one or two troops since a big thing about them is their Splash damage so while adding another MTAR would technically increase the chance of them hitting the targets more often it essentially didn't really fix that problem especially considering that the Hog Riders are a very popular troop at this tunel level and they move really fast and targeted defenses so the mortars will be even more ineffective against them because they were also melee troops and obviously the motors have a little radius close to them that they cannot attack back in so that basically made them useless when they were surrounded by a group of hog riders so overall despite supero adding a fourth motar to try and buff them they just didn't really get all that better or have any sort of meaningful impact on the game other than the fact that your base had just a little bit more DPS and as for town on 9 I mean it just wasn't really all that meaningful either you saw a rise in the usage of troops like the golems and P.K which are obviously big troops with a lot of Health which really just don't get affected by the mortars but tunnel 10 would actually be significant for the mortars and it would be a buff for them in March of 2018 the gear ups were introduced to the game with the builder Hall 8 update and there was the gear up for your mortar that was essentially let it kind of be like the multi mortar from the Builder base except that it had three shots instead of four then you could gear up a mortar at Town 10 but before we talk about that I actually want to talk about the multi mortar in the Builder base since that is basically the opposite of what the motor is in the home Village but first if you're enjoying the video so far then make sure to subscribe and leave a like as it really helps me out okay so the multimotor in the Builder base is one of the best defenses that exists and that is due to the fact that it has a massive range in shoots four shots which each do quite a bit of damage each it is essentially like four Motors combined into one before the Builder base 2.0 update the multi morar was really something that was almost always a problem to face against and if someone was upgrading their multi morar it would literally be the best thing ever for the attacker as that would make the attack so much easier the multimotor could cover pretty much the entire base so it would usually be placed towards the center and if you didn't manage to get to it quick enough then it'll be able to deal multiple rounds of damage to your troops and that could essentially ruin your attack it was at times even even stronger than the crusher when faced against ground troops which really showed how strong it was but unfortunately after the Builder base 2.0 update the multimotor has seemed to have lost its appeal as the base was split in two with the multimotor only being in one of them and there is also the fact that there are really only like two troops that ever really get used anymore in the Builder base but anyways before all of that the multimotor had been proven to be really strong which is a reason was super tried to incorporate it into the home Village and they did it by implementing the gear up feature so that you could pick one of your four mortars to essentially turn into a mini multimar and this was actually a lot better than the normal mortars if you were using any sort of ground Army that had large groups of troops together then you would actually have to be mindful of the multi motor since it was kind of like three motors combined into one however this would really only feel like a slight inconvenience in most cases though as people typically were able to Target and get rid of it quickly before it did much damage and so overall super cell's attempt at buffing the mortars only somewhat kind of worked it definitely helped in some cases but a majority of the time it was pretty easy to deal with for the attacker but moving on to town 11 we have what is probably the biggest thing that made the mortors almost irrelevant and that is the addition of the e artillery this defense literally overshadowed the mortars and made the mortars just seem so weak this is because the eagle artillery could basically cover the entire base which meant that it had a much bigger range than the mortars the eagle artillery also shot three shots similar to the geared up mortar but these shots did way more damage and were also actually guaranteed to hit the target since they locked onto them before shooting unlike the mortars which would end up missing the shots a lot of times the only time that eagle artillery wouldn't hit its targets would be if the target died in the time in between the shots being fired and them hit him the target but that is also the same for the mortars but the other thing that made the EO artillery so much better was the fact that it targeted both ground and air troops whereas the mortar only targeted ground troops and along with the fact that both of them also did Splash damage this all just made the Evo artillery just better and pretty much every way possible and I believe that 10 11 is really where the mortars kind of just fell Into Obscurity there literally was no purpose for them anymore with the eagle artillery in the game as it in a way just took their job the mortars were now really just an extra defense that didn't matter all that much and just took up space and as you go up with more and more Town Hall levels the motors just get worse and worse and the main reason for this is because they just don't really do that much damage at the higher tunnel levels when compared to the health of a lot of the most popular troops and over the years as more and more stuff gets added to the game and as the mors become more and more irrelevant supercell has still tried to buff their health and damage numerous times in multiple different updates but none of these changes were really enough to bring back the mortars and I honestly don't think there is much they can do to effectively bring them back other than make some pretty big changes to how the m work since right now they are just very outdated they no longer have the same importance that they had when the game only had like eight town hall levels and for the mors to become relevant or useful again some big changes have to be made first of all there has to be some sort of change to their accuracy or something since right now it feels like they only hit the ground Target half the time because of just how fast some armies are moving through certain bases now if super CLE adds some sort of lock on system like the eagle artillery I think that would definitely help and this could be something that happens at like 10 or 12 to essentially make the mottar seem upgraded with new technology and another upgrade could be to make the motors also be able to hit air troops because I mean the MTAR shot already goes pretty high in the air to make it balanced however the motor could maybe only hit some specific troops such as the balloons or minions as they usually traveling groups and are also already quite strong troops especially the balloons and the other change would obviously be to increase the damage because it really sometimes feels like troops are getting hit by paper ball because of how little damage the motor does in comparison to troops with really high amounts of Health at the higher tunnel levels but overall the motor just ended up becoming irrelevant over time as the game evolved because the motor was originally intended for a more medieval period and it just wasn't able to adapt well to the more futuristic direction that the game was going and the Mt just ended up losing their purpose as they were outclassed by the eagle artillery and some other defenses
