in a game with so much to do it's amazing that in under a month speedrunners have already managed to beat it in under an hour but the story didn't start out this way the first completed runs were over an hour and a half and used no glitches but as tricks and skips were discovered the record slowly approached the 60 Minute Mark today we'll be looking at the any percent route the various changes it went through and the many glitches that made the sub-hour speed run possible I hope you enjoy today's video one of the Staples of any speedrun are glitches that allow you to go fast and there's no better way to game and speed than by using this video's sponsor Opera GX regular browsers are boring with white and gray color schemes and zero sound effects but with Opera gx's GX mods feature you can customize your experience I'm using the GX boy mod which has ambient background music keyboard and browser event sounds foreign palettes for the browser and a dedicated wallpaper for the mod it even applies a Shader to websites to give that 90s handheld gaming device feel and it's easy to enable and disable the effects you want to customize your experience further maybe this mod doesn't quite fit your taste in that case the GX store has plenty to offer and you're free to mix and match effects to your heart's desire if you're nostalgic for the gaming magazines of the 90s the GX corner will help fill that void with upcoming releases News free to play games and deals all congregated into one browser tab when it comes to having multiple browser tabs open these can impact performance but the GX control feature allows you to control how much CPU and RAM are used and when compared to other browsers Opera GX is much less resource intensive and if you're hesitant on Switching don't worry the import tool lets you easily bring over all of your bookmarks cookies and browsing history use my link below to download Opera GX today thanks again to oper GX for sponsoring this video and with that let's get back to tears of the Kingdom an overview of the speedrun shows that it breaks down into three different parts with the majority of the length coming in the first and third sections the great sky island serves as a tutorial and teaches you the core mechanics of the game the second section takes place in the open world and at its Essence is a fetch quest to collect a few key weapons and items with it taking about 20 minutes the final section is the boss Gauntlet that ends with the Ganon fight and currently takes about 30 minutes so if the general progression out of the way let's dive into the great Sky Island the beginning is over nine minutes of mostly cutscenes before you're greeted with a fantastic opening cinematic and get full control of link your goal is to get off the great Sky Island through the temple of time but to do this you need to complete four different shrines before the path will fully open out of the gate there's a glitch abused called Moz door jumping named after its discoverers Moz and agdor it's used to repeat a jump slash in mid-air to get more horizontal distance with link landing on top of a hot coated frog which will be used in a recipe in just a bit but for now we are headed to the first of four shrines there have been a few stamina exploits found that involve using the throw mechanic and they delay how the meter drains which lets you sprint for longer durations and you'll see them used throughout the Run especially as players navigate between shrines so let's look at the first one on the list the gutenbach shrine is located in the cold Zone with the intended path having you construct Minecarts to work your way up a rail system on your way to the top but this takes time so a route was carefully devised up the mountain that pushes your stamina to the Limit this Shrine has the Ascend ability which lets you navigate vertically through some terrain and it has zonai wings just outside so when it's complete you can use them as a shortcut to the next location the in Isa Shrine where we get the fuse ability after completing the in is a shrine the third takes a bit of time to navigate to on the Overworld so a duplication glitch is used to brew movement speed Elixir then another Zone eye Wing is taken to get below the third Shrine so players can Ascend up to the entrance after this we head to the Temple of Time where it's revealed we need to do one more Shrine before we can leave which is where we get the rewind ability that allows us to move objects backwards through time with this Shrine complete we get an extra heart and can exit the Temple of Time into the final cut scene before descending to the open world a burning question on your mind is likely if you can skip the shrines and bypass the door in the Temple of Time and the answer is yes but not exactly two players would find different ways for getting around the door requirement nuyan built a wing glider that can get you to the path on the back end of the temple and adralik unlocked Ultra hand then built Bridges to get to the back but they both found the same thing waiting for them disappointment when you complete the shrines there is an object on the pedestal that you need to interact with to send the master sword back in time and start the next Quest but if you get behind find the temple without completing the four shrines the object won't be spawned which means the quest to venture to Hyrule won't be active leaving you stuck in the great sky island but with the tutorial clear let's look at the second section of the run the collect-a-fawn under normal conditions you'll jump off the platform and land in a lake below but this leaves us considerable distance from the next destination so a wing glider is used to get us over Lookout Landing before we dive down into a small pond to avoid fall damage once we arrive there's nothing stopping us from running to the end of the game but there is one key item we need to get so we complete the quest line to unlock the paraglider this has us detour to Hyrule castle and will activate a shrine on the way so we can warp back after tagging the objective which brings us to the major part of this section Gathering weapons and items for weapons there are a lot that get picked up but the three we're mainly concerned with are all in Lookout Landing by the training dummies the three swords stuck in the mud each have different properties the soldiers broadsword allows you to perform charge attacks quicker while the knight's broadsword offers a damage increase when you're down to your last heart the Royal broadswords Property increases the Damage Done during a flurry rush and as we'll see later the night and royal properties put in a lot of work but first we need to finish the quest line for the paraglider by talking to Pura before heading for the Hyrule depths for some more farming the weapons on their own aren't enough to get the job done against the end game enemies so part of the route involves farming up items that will be confused to our weapons and arrows to close the damage gap for example the knights broadsword has seven base attack but when fused with a diamond it gains an additional 25 for a total of 32 putting it on par with endgame weapons items that deal area of effect damage when attached to an arrow are also high priority so electric key swings and topaz are routed in and will be put to you shortly and you may be noticing that gymnast intentionally ran through the Loom to reduce his hearts and the reason he does this is to get the damage Boost from the night sword online because the most important enemy in the entire game is about to be fought the Gloom white Lionel Lionel drops some of the best weapons and fuse materials in the game but with no armor and pot lids for Shields where a bit under equipped to deal with it so the diamond fuse night sword is used to initiate the prone enemy to get some early boosted damage in with it now engaged we switch to the Royal broadsword which had a black Bucklin horn fused to it that greatly increases its damage and since it retains the flurry bonus of the base weapon the Lionel is fought by perfectly dodging all of its attacks and countering with a flurry in addition to having great fuse materials this enemy is guaranteed to drop the Savage vinyl bow which has great attack power and fires three shots per arrow and if you fuse an AOE item like a topaz or a ruby you get three applications of the fusion so you're able to chunk large enemies down incredibly fast fast however for the speed run one of these isn't enough so we use a duplication glitch with several duplication glitches being found the one we use here requires the item you're picking up to be one you've never grabbed before you'll press Plus in the item pop-up then sort your inventory and equip another bow this has Link holding the new item in the Overworld but when you look at him in the inventory menu he has something else equipped if you then drop the item you equipped it will turn into the item you wanted to duplicate when it lands on the ground in this case it's the Savage Lionel bow which gives us plenty of Firepower for the final section of the game but there's one more duplication glitch we need to do before we get there now that we have all the base weapons we need it's time to get all of the item attachments for better weapons and Powerful AOE arrows to do this you'll jump into the air with a shield jump then hold an item you have exactly one of then you'll hold the items you want to duplicate it's important that the items you want to duplicate come after the single item in your inventory list and when you pick your items back up you'll start seeing extras in your inventory this was originally called The Shield hop item transmutation but a more family friendly acronym was selected with it now being called the midair item transmutation and with our inventory now full of weapons and items it's time to head to the final leg of the speedrun the first part of the boss Gauntlet the Demon King's Army is broken down into four phases bakoblins lizalthos gibdo and moblins the bakoblin phase had an early Strat that had you fire a topaz so you could kite the group to the edge of the cliff and bomb flower them off the edge but this takes time so vivox developed a new Strat the item duplication We performed was precisely for this phase by attaching a bomb flower to your Shield you get sent into the air which gives you a perfect vantage point above the first wave of enemies and with three well-placed vinyl bow multi-shots you wipe out everything except the he knocks this is intentional as the buck goblins drop a lot of loot so you can run around and collect weapons and arrows for the later fights before finishing it off the topaz Strat is used in the lizalfos and moblin waves with single Target fire fruits being utilized in the gibdo phase before we arrive at the first boss colguera this fight is incredibly easy as you just attach items to your arrows so you can one shot the crystals the first phase takes about 20 seconds with the second being about 30 before you're on to the next boss marbled goma goma has an interesting Strat where you use recall to send a rock back into her eye so you can stun her then Ascend and get enough damage in to force phase 2. this time you'll use ultra hand to move a rock instead of recall but the Strat is the same Ascend to the top and get in massive damage so we can fight the next boss muck to rock mukter rock isn't hard as long as you're good at aiming with the bow as you just need to fuse choo choo jelly to an arrow for its water splash effect then hit a few shots to make its surface before getting in damage this process repeats for Phase 2 then we're taken to the queen gibdo fight Queen gibdo's first phase is straightforward you'll hit her with an electric key swing attached to an arrow then follow up with two fused Arrow shots that stun her for a long enough period to get in the required damage to start phase 2. this time she has lots of friends with the ground gibdos being the largest danger in this fight as they can grab you so to avoid them some ice Keys eyeballs are used for their combined Elemental damage and homing property to ground her once again then to avoid the risk of the gibdos a bombshield jump is performed to get Link in the air so the boss can be finished off safely this brings us to seized construct a boss that doesn't take much damage from fused items so we'll equip the Soldier's broadsword and make use of its faster charge attacks as the quickest way to defeat this boss is by knocking it into the boundaries of the arena with spin attacks we are now on to Phantom Ganon who is easily defeated with two topez shots in each phase bringing us to the final boss Demon King Ganondorf Ganondorf has three different phases in the first you fight him in his base form in the second he summons some Phantoms to help out and the third is a more difficult version of the second but they all use the same strategy in gymnast's early records he used a one-handed weapon to dodge Ganondorf attacks and getting big damage with flurry rushes across all three phases but vivox altered this slightly instead of a one-handed weapon he used a two-hander because it dealt more damage so much more in fact that Phase 2 is over in just two flurry rushes compared to the four that using a one-hander required this puts you into the final Ganondorf phase where two more flurry rushes are all that's required except this time Ganondorf will counter your first flurry with one of his own so you need to dodge two attacks before you can successfully Land one this brings us to the final form the demon dragon all you need to do is land on ganon's back and Destroy damage points until one opens up on his head with the final time coming on the last input to save Zelda so how fast is this route gymnast would set the first sub hour and a half time with vivox setting a time of 1 hour 22 minutes and 40 seconds but given that this game's speedrun is in its infancy there's more that can potentially be routed in so let's have a look at what speedrunners are currently cooking a full nine minutes are spent unlocking the paraglider as you need to go from Lookout Landing to Hyrule castle and then double back to town with a few cutscenes being involved as well if you could beat the game without the paraglider this entire detour could be eliminated so is it possible there are two issues that stand as roadblocks for routing out the paraglider first navigating The Depths would become considerably harder as the paraglider allows you to fall through the cavern and deploy it to avoid fall damage a method where you climb down would certainly be slower but this would be a plausible route change if a climbing descent was faster than nine minutes the second issue is the colguera fight without the paraglider getting into range to damage the boss is incredibly difficult and Phase 2 would require very good RNG with the tornado's spawn location as the paraglider is the only way to navigate reliably so a gliderless fight will become wildly inconsistent you might think that the demon dragon fight would be an issue but this boss doesn't need the paraglider at all as Zelda will swoop in to save you if you miss landing on ganon's back but the time lost waiting for her to grab you would be large so unless you land on Ganon each time you'll be in for a Time loss without the glider given these issues you'll probably find it insane that Not only was a way through the depths found without the paraglider that doesn't lose a lot of time but a strategy for colgara was developed as well when it comes to the depths you can get a fall damage cancel by precisely grabbing a wall as you're diving through the air with the other difficult Parts being done by Shield surfing to avoid getting killed by the Gloom for colguera it's almost impossible to damage him in either phase without the paraglider since you can't ride gusts to gain height and you don't start in range of the boss's weak points however it was realized that you can attach a zonai rocket to your shield and use that to get within Striking Distance in phase one as long as colguera doesn't move into a portal right away the rocket Strat is consistent enough to get routed in but in Phase 2 the timing is a bit more tight as you're already in the air so you have to maneuver into position then get your three shots in before you fall out of range to a game over now that we know it's possible let's see how much time it saves over getting the paraglider the paraglider detour takes about nine minutes so if it's going to be useful to the Run gliderless has a Time Bank of nine minutes it can make withdrawals from but two of those minutes are shared by both routes as you need to go to Lookout Landing anyway so now we're down to it needing to save about seven minutes if we look at the depth navigation thanks to the wall grab fall damage cancel it's only about a minute of difference from having the paraglider and a gliderless colgara fight is about even in length compared to using it which leaves the demon dragon fight without the paraglider you're forced to have Zelda pick you up after falling which means you need to be very accurate when jumping to the damage points on ganon's back or you'll have to repeat the process additionally Zelda can take you to a bad location where you can't reach a damage point on your next dive forcing you to dive to the bottom to trigger another pickup if everything goes good you can finish the fight without the paraglider but it costs a minute and 20 seconds comparatively so we have about two to three minutes of time loss which gives us a total time save between four to five minutes so while the Run gets a bit harder the gliderless route is definitely faster this puts the run in the hour and 15 minute range for final time in fact gymnast and v-box have both set records using gliderless strats with gymnast getting a 11536 and v-box setting a 11455 it's worth noting that gymnast died four times in his record so the time can go lower and you're probably thinking is a sub 1 hour run possible with current strats the answer is no something else would need to be found and there's one glitch that could potentially get the job done zuggle or zuggling is a glitch with great power as it can get you a glitched master sword that has infinite durability put multiple weapons in your hand with active hitboxes and even get you out of bounds the Ganondorf fight takes place in a separate room from the initial boss Gauntlet and it may be possible to zuggle Out of Bounds then navigate to that fight skipping the boss Gauntlet entirely this would eventually be tested and just like the Temple of Time skip it was confirmed that without doing the prerequisites which in this case are the fights in the boss Gauntlet the trigger to enter the Ganondorf fight won't be active so while it would save close to 10 minutes unless a way is found to skip satisfying the boss Gauntlet completion check a zuggle clip won't be saving time but clipping out of bounds is just one application of the zuggle glitch putting weapons with active hitboxes in your hand is a good way to increase damage and that's precisely what speedrunners have done a zuggle does take some time to set up so any use of it would have to be faster than doing a fight normally but the Lionel fight is exceptionally long so it was a prime candidate for zuggling initially Runners would Dodge attacks and initiate flurry Rush five times to end the fight which took about a minute and 10 seconds now they spend about a minute setting up a zuggle so that they have multiple Spears in hand which lets them defeat the Lionel just as it's drawing its weapon the fight itself is faster but given the setup time the Zucker Strat ends up being about even so why was it routed in the Strat actually pays dividends later in the run as you use the bow for the demon horde and colgara fights which lets you carry the zuggled weapons into the Goma maktarak and queen gibdo fights zuggled weapons do have durability so they will break after a certain amount of hits so the gauntlet is routed to get the maximum usage out of them before they break you might be wondering why weapons aren't zuggled again for Ganondorf and that's because it appears as though he has a damage cap or some other restriction on how much he can take per hit so zuggling again would only incurate time loss unless a way to break the damage cap is found the demon dragon fight on the other hand had a minor development where before you deal the final blows on the first damage point you land on you'll fire some Ruby arrows to another point to destroy it while you get the last hits in on the first one to get two points in one dive with the implementation of zuggling Samurai man would be the first person to set a world record with a new route setting a time of 1 hour 10 minutes and 57 seconds and within 45 minutes of Samurai man's run zdi would set a record of 1 hour 9 minutes and 55 seconds the first sub-hour 10 minute run in the game's history despite all of these awesome discoveries I do have a bit of unfortunate news on May 25th Nintendo released a patch that fixed all of the duping methods as well as zuggling meaning that runs done on the current patch will be significantly slower than runs down the previous patch however despite Nintendo's efforts Runners have continued to break the game on the early versions and there have been some major discoveries one of the biggest would be the inclusion of the zuggle out of bounds trick which has two requirements a zonai control stick and lots of zuggled weapons once the weapons are zuggled if you stand on the stick link will fall through the floor due to the number of weapons being zuggled this trick is called the zuggle overload out of bounds and it's used to get through the depths incredibly fast being out of bounds makes it very hard to do a fall damage cancel by grabbing a wall so fairies are duplicated and three zonai control sticks are picked up because there's more than one overload we need to do the obvious spot we are going to is the Lionel fight so after Gathering the items we'll do two overloads to arrive at the Lionel where it's one cycled due to the amount of weapons from the zuggle overload after making some weapons another overload clip is performed to get us to the boss Gauntlet and you may have noticed extra zonai sticks in the inventory Runners actually duplicated them because a major oversight was discovered in The Gauntlet previously players had tried to overload to the Ganondorf fight since it takes place in a different room than the gauntlet and they found that the trigger to start it wasn't active the Assumption was that the boss Gauntlet had to be fully cleared for the trigger to appear but that's only partially correct it turns out that the check to spawned the Ganondorf trigger is satisfied after the Demon King's horde is defeated this means that when the colguera fight starts you can clip outside of the room with an overload and walk to Ganondorf this does have a few strange effects for instance in ganondorf's second form the game has his name and health bar as colgaras but you're still able to defeat the bomb us so that's all that matters since you're skipping four bosses the zuggle overload saves a ton of time but would it be enough for a sub 1 hour gymnast would be the first to try and answer that question setting a few World Records before he arrived at a time of 1 Hour 3 minutes and 15 seconds [Music] 103 15. uh with a lot of time lost it's worth noting that there was a death on Ganondorf that cost a minute along with a few other segments that could be optimized so the sub-hour Run was indeed possible the next day zdi would start a run that used the same route as gymnast coming out of the great Sky Island he was just nine seconds ahead but after the final fight he saved almost a minute over gymnast's run due to tighter routing when it came to duping he has a cleaner fight during the first phase of the gauntlet as well and going into colguera he's two minutes ahead if he can defeat Ganondorf without dying the sub hour is achievable with near perfect Ganondorf phases he's four minutes ahead going into the demon dragon as long as he doesn't miss a dive the sub-hour record will be his he destroys two eyes on his first dive using the Ruby Arrow Strat then sticks his second die for a single as long as he doesn't miss the next dive things are looking good he Nails the last eye which leaves ganon's head and with perfect Precision he slays the dragon grabbing Zelda's hand at 59 minutes and 22 seconds the first sub-hour in the games history this was a Monumental record for tears of the Kingdom but it's not where the story ends first a route was created using a trick called Auto build cancel slide or ABCs that let you navigate the skies incredibly fast by exploiting how the auto build works it requires detouring for the ability but it saves Time by skipping the Lionel fight not requiring a zuggle setup to clip out of bounds and by being a faster method of travel than riding on zonai wings the ABC's route is incredibly close in time to the zuggle overload route and Samurai man would use it to set a record of 58.51 just one day after zdi's record but things didn't stop here apart from the great Sky Island being rerouted enough times to have its own video the biggest change was Runner SVA finding a way to use zuggled weapons against Ganondorf it involves playing on the 1.0 patch and by using a zuggle overload combined with an attack up plus three meal you can defeat each Ganondorf phase in a single flurry Rush which saves a huge amount of time on the demon dragon fight he also managed to two-cycle the damage points knocking out three on his first dive with all of these developments helping SVA set a record of 57 minutes and 19 seconds what seemed impossible when gymnast set the first record was slowly realized as players broke the game piece by piece stripping away anything that wasn't required there's still a lot of routing and glitch hunting going on in fact the record has already been lowered to a 55 minute time and if you want to watch History happen for yourself check out these streamers at
