how welcome back to the channel guys today I've got an interesting video for you and I thought is saying it's a subject that affects everybody especially when you're out to buy a watch and I fought better than getting one dealer's opinion you'll have two dealers opinions especially that points off as most of you know him or all of you know him he's a former dealer and now he's doing YouTube first thing first Paul how are you and what's new not so bad baby thanks touchwood at least they'll keep him well when the Thorpe household been self isolated now for about a week difficult unusual strange what can I say but everyone's in the same boat everybody's in the same boat I've been seven days at home as well but just to make it clear none me or Paul none of us are sick but we're just isolating to help the situation out there ya know Paul you had a short message that you want to include yeah I mean basically die we just you know I'm not there tell anyone what are those like conversations with my son in laws today and I've said the same thing to them look I can't ask or expect you to do anything but I want the truth and that the bottom line is is that over the weekend I am lucky I've got motorcycles so I can still sell faisal a whilst going out and having a ride and that eased my release in the moment and I've been out over the weekend and I've got to tell you I'm absolutely shocked to the core the amount of people who are still socializing still walking in groups still going into shops just as if like nothing is taking place now I think my message is very simple David I've been listening very careful carefully to the government in the last few days and what I think they're trying to do is they're trying to give us the opportunity to do the right thing on our on our own back in a minute if we don't do that if the people don't start to keep themselves indoors and keep us they're going to tell us what to do and that's the difference you know they giving us a chance at the moment to do the right thing if we don't do the right thing they're going to start telling us what to do and you know what I think it's coming to the point we're going to have to because there are far too why why one hour today to get some provisions and she wore surgical gloves and a surgical mask and she actually had people laughing now I just find it incredible I think actually in central London it's become the norm to wear gloves and a mask go into the supermarket but I echo your message I mean if you want the right the simple right to go out for a walk for a bit of fresh air yeah just do it sensibly because it looks like very soon that right is gonna be taken away from all of us because there's been a lot of people hanging in massive groups I mean the government shut down all the bars and the clubs and the pubs and restaurants and then if allowed you to go out for a bit of fresh air but instead of going to restaurants now everybody's gathering mass groups in parks so I mean please do follow the advice and you want to do the right thing the government's trying to do the right thing by which I'll give you the right to breathe exactly exactly but if the people are too stupid and I'm gonna use that word if people are too stupid out there not to get the message the only way they've maybe are gonna get a message when one of their family members gets ill god forbid just take a look that was happening to our close friends it doesn't have enough beds the NHS doesn't have enough beds one day that could be one of your family members and if things keep going up very fast it will get to the point and it probably is getting to the point where the NHS will have to start making the decisions you live you die you live you die because there's just not enough ventilators out there so please do your base stay at home and let's get this you know whole situation sort it and get it sorted there we can get it sorted by staying at home the sooner we can all go back to normal life and enjoy exactly working living having a normal life and I think that I don't go too deep into this subject just to keep the vibe positive but I think it's a message that was worth spreading out and just going back into the watch world now and going back to our video one thing I was going through my messages on Instagram actually and a viewer contacted me and he was super convinced that he's been stung for a fake watch he was very convinced he purchased a fake ceramic Submariner so that's a once one one six six one zero and then he messaged me he said you know I've messaged a few people nobody got back to me can you please help me out I'm a bit stuck I don't know what to do is there any chance of me getting my money back I told him how did he purchase the watch I mean everything he did he took no steps to protect himself I mean he did it in good faith but you've got to use your common sense when you do these things he bought it from a private he paid all straight out cash and he's not very experienced he showed it to his friend his friend told him or his friend who's a collector he told him all the Finnish is not right something's weird about this watch I think it's fake and he convinced him straight out the watch is fake now he took it to a watchmaker and he opened the watch but that watchmaker doesn't work with Rolexes and he didn't want to put his word behind it he said here I'll open the watch free but take the pictures anything you need send it to whoever you want I can't comment on it so when he reached out to me I said are you adamant the watches fell trying to help him out you know but when he told me he paid cash it's a private I said we'll look your money gun is done I said are you sure I thought maybe there's the silver lining I said who told you is fake he said my friend I felt ok I've had these scenarios before [Music] see some pictures and watch what do you have he sent me all the pictures including the movement I'm looking at it and I thought to myself okay if this is fake then I'm in deep trouble this is the thing because most dealers you know they can tell by a picture if this if something is fake or not specially the features a picture it is within our fear if it's good enough the picture yeah exactly we're talking modern watches not vintage here yeah I I told them look with all honesty the watch looks okay to me if I was you even if you have to pay a little bit of money take it to an experienced watchmaker and I looked up actually watchmakers in Toronto this was in Canada so I looked up watch make is there and I sent him a few addresses I said these look ok if it's wrong so I took it there and it turned out to be which is the good thing but yeah weeks the guy was stressing I mean to know that you've lost a large sum of money it's a hard thing to deal with and this takes me on to my first question and I'll just pop this right up on the screen hmm what is the hardest thing when buying a watch for me or for the public for a foreign mumbling for a new becoming dealer okay well for that the hardest thing about buying a watch is the vast majority and novice buyers are their own worst enemy lack of patience a lack of common sense I hate to say this because the almost sales row but you know I've had similar things stories like you just told me David and you know sometimes you feel like knocking paper on the head and saying look what he's wrong with you well what are you doing going out funnily enough for just the answer the kind of a similar risk question on the second edition of the what show that I'm now producing and it's a similar sort of answer look if you are a novice buyer then you as we've always said before you really are best advised to invest in the dealer first so go to a dealer look this and you might get a slightly better price privately but you've really got to know what you're doing it is a very deep ocean full of very big aggressive hungry sharks and if you go swimming in those awards don't be surprised if one of them doesn't come and bite your leg off and this is the problem is that too many inexperienced people suddenly decide that they're going to buy a Rolex on Monday and they've got to have it on their wrist by Tuesday afternoon and they ignore all the warning signs that perhaps even its flagging up in their own mind they'll ignore them until they fulfill bet suddenly to get a Rolex on their wrist and then they start asking themselves the questions and what about from a dealer's perspective so when you first started I know you started very young and a while back um I shouldn't say a while back you're still young I know you started very young in this business yeah as a dealer what was the hardest thing for you trust in the bobbin truck trust in me when somebody know when says when a private comes in with a watch yeah that's the hardest decision that you have to pull trust him but is it real or is it fake no no it's not not not so much is it real or is it what I'm saying is as a beginner as it as it always a beginner hard a shot you need to pull yeah I mean the hardest one the hardest go easy Oh am I gonna spend my money on a wrong of Roman you know what we would call the roll in there you know it's you know a fledgling dealer is always gonna have that concern sorry I thought you talked about me as an experienced dealer I mean when I first begin now when I think you build that instinct and that's going with my next point yeah yeah but as a as a as a new dealer I remember when I first started I mean the hardest shot the pole is is this real or is this fake and a large sum of money behind it and of course at the time I didn't make the shots and I and I and I got a second opinion and I asked because it's a lot of money that we dabble with we take it for granted now that your exam yeah your most important shot is do you trust the person that you're buying from because we know straight away if the watch is genuine or not is the story behind it genuine am i putting the alley in the right thing it goes on to my next point which is how long does it take to build the instinct of spotting a fake watch because I see and before you answer Paul and the reason I included this question is because there's a lot of videos out there on how to spot a fake Rolex yeah how to spot a fake Rolex and I know there's a lot of people that do it for entertainment purposes and that's completely fine but a lot of people watch these videos and now think they are heavy gold and what I wanted to ask you is how long does it take to build that first of all I think it's an absolutely brilliant question David and it's one that I'm really gonna enjoy answering I just wanna touch on those videos that you spoke about I've watched the law of those videos and I've always personally shied away from making how to spot a fake Rolex video and that's the most obvious video for me tonight there's a former watch thing and the problem is is that you can't teach that in an hour-long two-hour long three-hour long video it's impossible it's the hands-on experience over a time over a period of time now when you say how long does it take well that could take someone that's really as a good eye because in the business we speak about having a good eye and that can mean you can spot a good watch from a mile off you could spot a fight from a mile off you can spot a bargain in someone's cabinet from a mile off it's all about having what we will call a good eye now that's something that I think you're born with rather than that you learn it's an almost the natural instinct but it's not so much a question a time for me it's a question of experience and someone's ability to grasp what they're looking at I have tried to show people the difference the glaring difference but for instance let me let me give you an example so I've had people in my shop they've bought watches to me they clearly fake they know it's fake they just say oh you know they're almost quite proud of it they'll take the watch off their wrist and they'll go oh I bought this in spite it's a great fake have a look and what do you think and I'll say look do you want me to be honest with you and they'll say yeah yeah be honest with me and I say look I can spy a mile off and they'll say hell and I go a look and I'll show em four or five things that glaringly obvious though anyone that even knows their watch is a little bit and they'll still even under an eyeglass they still can't see it now that sort of person hasn't got a good eye they are never gonna pick it up to any degree of reliability then there are other people where I've seen them youngsters that come into the business in the business for like a matter of just a few months and summing snaps in their mind something clicks and they get it but it's experience it's not holding one watch it's not holding a hundred 1 watt ease it's about holding a thousand and one Morty's and when you've done that and if you've got a good eye then you can say you're on the road to be out how to spot a fake watch never through a video now I'm sorry I know this is a long answer ok another golfer a golfer I want to go back to what you said a little bit earlier in the video about people you know in danger when they're going out by and what is you know hell bath our people to go out and buy a watch privately from a private individual who they've never met before there's no idea about the background the history nothing they've done no research they've not researched the model the watch the brand anything all they know is it's a Rolex also they think and then they pay cash and then they start to moment when everything goes wrong and you know sometimes people are we're not very good at here in this country mate we need to sometimes take a long hard look in a mirror because quite often we're looking at the person who's just as much to blame there's anyone else and that's your worst enemy basically 50 you look at the mirror and are your everything hundred percent 100 percent listen the time so I've given people my solid if I said please please please do not do this do not do that do not do the other and then I'll bump into and six weeks later and they'll like look a bit sheepish and go oh I did it and you think I can't help you I mean look for me getting into the watch industry and then I remember asking Alan how do you know like that you know you're putting the loop to your eye what are you looking at here how do you know this style is real or fake how do you know this watch is real or fake and literally he will tell me in good time you will know and he just kept repeating that sentence in good time you know and I never got it and he started to frustrate me you know yeah but luckily for me and again I use the word how long is because I wanted you to expand on our answer for me it's it's how much you do in that time it's how much it handle in that time and do you have the curiosity are you a curious cricket world yeah yeah every single watch that came on our table every single watch and you know we used to deal in bulk we are we were a wholesale business before we became a retail business every watch would pass through my hands and I just want I just I would put a loop on it just to understand what makes this watch different from that watch your effort from that watch yeah and then slowly slowly things just started sparking up as soon as I pick up a watch it just feels different you know yeah one example I used with my customer and it might sound like a very stupid example he asked me in the office he said well I was buying a watch from him he said well that was quick I just put it in my hand I said okay you know we started negotiating he meant he said what do you mean okay you're not gonna check the water I said no I'm happy with it you know I can tell it straight away now before of course before we pull out the money I'll open the watch and everything but yeah my first instinct I'm happy I don't yeah so he asked me how do you know I said well me and you have exactly the same phones right and we also had the same exact covers yeah I said if I was to put my phone on the table here upside down and you were to put your phone right next to it upside down I tell you turn around I swapped them I change the positions and I say turn around pick your phone by feeling it would you know which phone is yours he said what do you mean I said go for it he picked up my phone and then he put it back he said no that's not mine this is mine because it feels different yeah the wear and tear on his case just feels different because he held it from certain spots it might be a stupid example but what I'm trying to get to now there's a good example yeah once you've handled enough watches if you if I've held that Submariner ten times a day for the past ten years when you give me the fake one it just feels off you know when your life when your I feel as you but your gut feeling is saying this watch is wrong but it has all the right things to please your eye but yeah I feel like this feels wrong yeah absolutely I've said in previous videos that good experience these you know don't really need to even use their eyes their fingers and their touch will pretty much tell them what they want to know within that you know maybe 30 seconds of holding the watch you're absolutely right but it does take to be fair to the people watching and by the way I just want to go back if anyone doesn't know Alaniz because I know you mentioned Alan Alan is the owner of the company that you work for the owner of what scale is very good for in the morning for many many many years he's a great guy and I would say that you have been lucky to have such a mental because your boss as far as I'm concerned is one of the leading authorities in many areas in the what industry and I'm not saying that because he is my friend but I am quite happy to admit I have probably learned more myself from your boss Alan than anyone else in the business over the years he's an absolute minefield so you have been lucky in having such a great foundation if you like to be fair to you and entices you I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear this I think both of you you and Alan one thing I think you did right is diversity you were never just the only Rolex dealer you were never the only Rolex dealer you used to do everything shoot from Chopin to breguet to this to that a ruby set diamond set sapphire and Melania you know I remember your stock when you have items of beauty back in the days I knew yeah right you you you used to always say this saying and I think and I think it's true if I am stupid enough to buy it right and I'm an experienced dealer I'm sure somebody else is out there yeah I know yes the word stupid as in to love between each other but the thing is if if I'm crazy enough to like it yeah somebody else is just as crazy as me yeah exactly million people in the world exactly I'll just clarify that what we really meant by that was if the watch was unusual looking and I'm looking at the watch thinking you know what I love this watch but it's really wacky now if all math and after loving someone out is gonna be just as mad as me and they're gonna love it even more so that was much yes those much is that we can think wow it's so ugly it's beautiful yeah exactly you remember some of those noise the odor we used to get together we go a little bit off track but years ago we would get together I knew my new boss and we would do business [Music] in the evening in private in in the office when was alone and they work they were crazy days good and I think once you've handled such a diverse like portfolio you know of watchings you build that instinct so when you go to a trade show I'm sure someone like you you've dealt with so many brands to the point if you go to a trade show that doesn't have a single Rolex piece you still manage to do business because you've done a fair bit in each brand yeah you're always open for business and I think that's a nice thing to be to be able to call yourself an overall dealer it's the nice thing and you start to learn pick you know actually you know before I go on further because some of my next points what we say now will lead onto some of my next points and for example how do you authenticate the dial because I think that's one of the hardest things sometimes especially when you're looking at vintage how do you authenticate the dial that's a question I get asked by sometimes viewers sometimes on Instagram some and even in the office it's like you're put in that loop onto a dial you're looking at a metal slate that has a bit of printing on it what says it's fake and what says it's ring okay well this is a difficult one to answer because again I'm we're looking at instinct and experience the same because in some respects the the answer to the question is no different to the one that I gave a little while ago that it's all about experience having seen many roles you know we see errors on both give me an example you know the a page that I won the Daytona now if he wasn't aware of the IPS though when he was looking at that you think this is not right because we're related own makers place where they do and so other companies as well and I've seen some major ones there for sorry yeah a pH dial is wearing a pH is separated from the rest of the cosmos six yeah sorry so I mean I've seen those from some of the larger manufacturers that I've had a look at Andrea station and if I wasn't 1 million percent convinced the berries originality I'll potentially call it in the question because I'm used to looking at such high levels of quality and I'll give you an example if I was to go into a local branch of say Goldsmith's I could take one or two what is out of their window from different watch brands get there what's under a loop and it wouldn't necessarily the print wouldn't necessarily be to the quality that I would expect from such a company so there are different levels of perfection or different levels of quality quality control on the brain pending on the brand and you have to get used to each range level of quality because because you can't you can't compare tag highest quality necessarily with Patek Phillipe it's just not gonna be the same so you have to expect and look for different levels sure I mean it's it's kind of I think you can relate to this I'm not to say to any brands but you said you can't compare Tag Heuer to to Patek Phillipe but if you are a person that is used to handling Patek Phillipe sand and you know we've been fortunate enough to to with a lot of perfect you know and and if you handle bragging and if you handle angers and and anything that is upmarket and then you go and hold a who blog put a loop on a who blow if your experience is with protec you're the first thing that will strike you is that who blows fake yeah because the quality of the finish it's not up there with the rest of ya the manufacturers yeah again not to say any brands but it took me quite a few who blows to understand because I kept looking at me and and the finish on the rotor or the finish on parts of the movement or now on those who blows I'm looking at it if I based it on my experience that I have with Rolex Patek ap and all the other brands then I would call that what fake so I had to train my eye that these are the standards of that brand and it's not gonna get better than that then you know next time you have a watch mmm then you know you bring it you know you take it and you check it yourself and I'll be honest with you the problem with brands that don't have very super high standards on finishing is it becomes so much easier to replicate absolutely realistic yeah the less nice finishing you have on a movement the easier it is for anybody to replicate the watch and that's why there's a lot of brands that I'm not even I wouldn't say a lot but there are brands that I'm not even satisfied with my own judgement of it I would take it if I'm happy with it then I'll pass it to Alan or a posse even with Alan he would as well just say you know what let's get a watchmaker take a look at the movement because those brands are so highly faked and they are their own enemy the reason they're highly faked is because they don't include enough nice finishing on their length let me summarise this and make this even simpler for our viewers to understand if you're producing an object and the quality level is three out of ten three out of ten is fairly easy to the the fight manufacturer to replicate if you're producing an object these seven out of ten it's going to be more than twice as difficult to produce that as a replica if you're producing and watch that is ten out of ten and white anything so I'm up there almost it's almost impossible I mean listen I I personally have never seen you know and laying a fake laying a Rolex there's been some super fakes but there are ways around them as well when we look at the real blue tip brain to the look the world's real best they are impossible to replicate give you an example why are you wearing tonight no flexing I'm having real trouble seeing that from here wage a so it's a laying oh yeah I can see that beautiful how long it's it's this is this would be quiet of a struggle to think this would be quiet of a struggle not only just the design but the functionality it's too much the fight there's too much to face too much to fight now and they'll have a go and they will do it but the functions will be cheap be nasty they won't work they'll be stiff they're deep or they'll be loose they'll rattle some ink won't work some time they're actually they're easy to spot even someone with relatively low levels of experience but they've had enough of that type of quality watch will very quickly spot the fakes but you've got it right perfect the only one you hit the nail on the head the lower the quality the easier it's the replica here and it's as simple as that and to jump just a bit more kind of specific to the dials because I know if I just use one word you're gonna smile vintage dials the one word is vintage no matter what Brandi is a lot of old vintage dials or vintage hands or or vintage cases that there was a lot of hand work involved in them and when you start include hand work means there's going to be some imperfections but these are highly skilled people and it's your job to know which imperfection sets the watch is fake or real which one is like a fluke and which one is a professional imperfection but when I say how do you authenticate the doll what I mean is again it's one of those things that you can't teach it's one of those things that you build the instinct for and it takes quite a while but as dealers when we're staring at these dogs with loops what are we looking for personally I go straight first the surface of the dial and then I hit well actually probably the first thing I check is the print but depending on which what she is the surface and the print most people are looking only for symmetry now symmetry is very important because if something doesn't look nice and symmetrical if things are out of place then something's wrong but also again it depends on the brand but I think your anger the print is one of the most important things and if you have diamonds on the dial it's the setting it's now being when you when you mentioned vintage you give me what solving arrange arrange for me vintages from very very old up to nineties you know nothing optimal I mean it's like if I I'll use a word that maybe isn't really news much in the watch business but for me when I look watch and do as we all don't David next the first thing is they're getting hungry loop I'm actually looking for an atmosphere now I know that sounds a bit weird but if you ever walked into a bar one night and you haven't even spoke to anyone you've never been there before you don't know anyone no one said anything to you you won't read or anything I don't like they're in here it's not for me right okay so when I look at a bar I'll survive that entire Bowl probably in 10 to 15 seconds depending on nothing that's your instinct but what I'm testing but what I'm saying is when you dig deep so when you start to analyze part by part what we staring it's the print it's the setting yeah quality of the stones Rolex would only use high quality stones and usually they're matched by color size Cartier ''tis they only name depending on the period I would add to that it could be a combination of all those things so if we're talking about a nineties diamond dull bite just for example the setting is going to be one of the first areas that you would look at if it was a 1920s Rolex with just a regular bar one might be a die or whatever and then I'm going to be looking for a bit more there the a little bit more with a finer detail just gonna be because I'm happy to find one or two year old minor errors on the some of the older what is pre 1930 because there was a lot more hand working both even down to the hallmarks and a lot of people don't know this but back in the day you know during the First World War Rolex were still a very very prestigious company even going back to so the First World War II is and they wouldn't allow British watchmakers to case their movement so Rolex with and and by law that what is coming into the UK would have to have a UK s a mark or a hallmark so Rolex would produce the cases individually in gold sometimes in silver they would then send by ship and buy rile the case on its own so the UK he could be it could have been Glasgow it could have been Burma me could have been London for the SA mark it's a tight place so that makes it a new kylie --gel duty paid the assay office then ships that case back all the way to Switzerland by train and by a rival for Rolex then to put the movement into the watch and then ship it by rail and see all the way back to a retailer who would often have to put their own strap on the watch and that's why you find some relics is there any Rolexes with venison my paces so there are many many reasons and little errors or things that you could look at something to think that doesn't sound right how can I have a Rolex or the Venice in case you need to know the story to understand but sorry I'll kind of digress a little bit it's always interesting it's always interesting for the the diamond setting is a big giveaway on some of the eighties and nineties watches because that specific type of same back in the day and a lot of the fakers or the aftermarket dolls they use and later setting on an earlier watch if that makes sense that's a beat mistake that they make and you can see I've switched a question on to the next point which is that how do you know if a diamond what is aftermarket okay but the first thing is is that your deal if you tell you yeah by the way sorry just just to clarify here when I'm saying how do you know I'm not actually talking about I'm not we're not making a guide for the public we're not yeah like farming you we're just telling you I'm just telling you how intricate you know how small the meetings are involved in this well generally Rolex diamonds will seem to you know speaking if I got a bit of a salt if that makes sense they look a little bit special and having said that to be fair I mean I'm not sure point wise but we're probably looking at you know just a few points diamonds size-wise I'm talking about now on each particular owl marker so you wouldn't necessarily expect the layman to be on a spot and difference between you know the vs one stone to an S ice though you know we're getting into the scientific to throw em of the thing so that's difficult but generally it's the quality of the bowl the print the quality of the diamond is usually lower you must have looked very very carefully with a jeweler's loupe at the settings the settings should look on a genuine Rolex they should be perfect they should all look the same they should all be just just as they should be off them with aftermarket dolls and the I'm suspection you will find some anomalies usually with aftermarket dial I think sometimes a little bit like wonky with the setting sometimes by the way they're making them really good nowadays I mean I've seen great stuff but if you concentrate if you concentrate hard and you look at the edges of the print and you see that wrigley kind of finish which by the way even some original dials in the past were not in very perfectly print area word list let's kind of go back to modern modern downs are quite perfect on rolling I can so on so yeah you're looking at that finish and usually what we say is the watch talk to you but you've got to as well do a fair bit of reading and I think again things go back to experience is that your gut feeling and instinct you know I remember again when I've kind of around first started then going to trade shows and I would hear döner say yeah 8/8 they're picking up car tears in the same 88 I was like aw stallion I said what are they talking it was 88 or sometimes they use the word half yeah I can see it's half I said it just doesn't make sense to me what are you talking about and then Alan told me look at this vintage Cartier diamond set watch right and take this Ronix here what's the difference between the stones a lot of the cartier there's a lot of Cartier watching especially in the same 90s and so on I'm not sure Paul if you've concentrated on this but the diamonds are not actually full cut hmm they're not they don't have the full number of facets on the top yeah and that's actually one way when I see this now on like a on an older Panther lady's Panther diamond set when I see this now it sparks genuine to my eye as soon as I see that because nobody most of the diamonds now are cut in phone they're not they don't do half cuts and you know and the things we must remember as well particular with Cartier's is that they are predominantly or have been a juice company as well so they are a completely different color fish something I wanted to pick up on that you kind of mentioned a little bit earlier and that was you know when someone comes into your shop well one of the first things that people would often though very often with with say let's pick a reference a one six two three three one six zero one three they'll pick the watch up and they'll go and they'll weigh in there in in a is imaginary and then they look at you and go it suspicious right and I would say what's the problem and they say that's a weigh as much as a full year would weigh and I said well there's the king it didn't it doesn't weigh as much as you thought it would weigh it's your perception now some of the older what is there a lot lighter than somebody knew their counterparts and that imaginary said scales that people use or based comment of firm makes me laugh a little bit because it's not people often associate weight with anticipation of some other what is from the sixties seventies eighties that way wasn't necessarily there certainly by today standards and such on the aftermarket dolls as well something else and I'm going to be honored to be David you know what I know a lot of people actually did he test the art aftermarket scene and I'm not I love with it but I have sold what is with aftermarket dolls in the past I make no bones about their honey back around 2010 that's all people wanted but it was very new yeah they want to think they wanted aftermarket they wanted bling they wanted aftermarket dolls and after set bezels etc etc and if you weren't gonna supply it they would go down the road but the cases of always safe you gotta tell you cuts them up you know what they're buying it's fine and I mean in America today I think it's more frowned upon in the UK and I've spoken to Roman about this you know the custom market and the United Spidey's absolutely nice and anything no one says a word and I think we kind of maybe you know we have a little bit of watch snobbery not only in the UK probably in Europe right so but your opponent I'll tell you something Europe are quite tight on watches I mean yet Germans the Italians they pay attention to strict detail all day yeah you know I know a lot of Italian dealers and I tell you something you know when you have the ideas of like a flat four or a or a a pH dial or or floating dial and all of these terms where do you think they actually started they didn't start in the UK they started in Italy it's usually the Italians that you learn a lot from them oh listen there are some hugely educate watch ajke countries around Europe and I think Europe is probably the center of the world as far as watches are concerned in many respects and you know look I don't want to upset our American viewers because I think they're very very aware of what I think of him I love our American viewers and I think highly of death of the people in a country by think Europe is the place when it comes to watches yeah and I think I think as well law wise we have to as well be quite you have to get it where it's due I mean the UK law is quite tight on what should we say on them Trading Standards yeah and you fight the super super clean with your custom yes yeah sorry we're actually strict sir I mean I've even recently you know I've been to countries such as Spain and Portugal when I've seen counterfeit watch is quite openly on sale you could never do that in the UK would last like five minutes you're asking for your shop to be closed I mean just kind of touching up on banned I'm not going to mention any names but I am I had a I'm doing now actually before everything kind of her before we close the office I was doing a deal on a submariner 18 carat Submariner on a bracelet sorry let me just pick up on something there you saying your offices are now closed yeah okay so just run past me what's going on there I know what's going on done a full video on this okay I need to catch up on it let's scoot though I'm innocent - mom - you it's good that you're putting people before profit I've done very deep in that maybe on that subject in my previous video maybe you want to watch it but just to kind of give you an update and yeah we decided to close the shop because it's it's it's right it's the right thing to do we've made enough money you know you don't need it and to be fully frank as well and I did mention in my video Alan Alan just said look it's not worth it especially you know I've got a pregnant wife you know and some of our staff their parents are diabetic just it was a very touchy thing you know so Alan just said and this is before the government started forcing the closure of or just over a week now yeah he just said go home your salary continues as usual literally and that's before the government offered any support because we closed way before the government asked people to start closing and so on and they didn't ask our sector to close they asked the hospitality and the area catering and retail and stolen but yeah that's tell me something I tell you something about me tell you something you know you won't know this but three or four nights ago I sent Alan your boss a text watch related and this is a man that eats sleeps breathes consumes I mean if this guy could have been born or watching that's what he would be right that's how much he loved he's watching I send him a a what tree like he question the other night something I wanted to talk to him about any message that to me was Paul at the moment I'm too upset to talk about what is that tell you something it's just not worth it seriously it's not worth it I'm still getting messages matter of fact today a guy got quite annoyed with us when you go on our website you get a big pop up saying that you know due to the due to the virus we're closed bla bla bla and protect our staff and so on and he still called us which you know because arm by vert and the reason we have the phone line active is because what if any of our existing yeah you've got you know after sales service so anyways this guy calls he says I've got a GMT steena rose gold to sell you know one of the nuance age in our and how much would you pay me for and I said I'm you know it was actually tomorrow my wife she was speaking to him and she picked up the phone and she asked me or somebody's often what I told her you know we're closed I said just say sorry we're not actually buying because we're closed at the moment he told her okay you know I know you're close but how much would you offer I said we we are closed then because I'll make you an offer now I might not be able to honor it later I don't want to make an offer and then he got offended you know he's saying well if you're closed you shouldn't have your lines active I said well how do we answer our existing customers if they haven't any problems but it clearly states on our website we closed so there's a lot of people just not be an understanding of the fact that it takes you know it's a big financial hit to close your business especially if you decide to carry on paying your staff and your rent and that's a decision that we've taken in the interest of our own health and the stars hence I mean I'm a Croydon it wasn't a decision taken lightly and and and I'm surprised that people are complaining why we're not still working it's look I'm not gonna risk I'm not gonna risk what we have health wise family and so on for a bit of money simple notes yeah so just one thing for know we had shown up on your saying people not stating watch his being after marking so on of you you really have to be super clear with customers what yours sadly enough and I've had several cases I'm not gonna mention the company's name because it's a UK company several cases with me by and watches from customers and I he said I said look like this is not genuine or that's not genuine you know like parts bits and bobs you know for example if a customer's selling you a watch with box and papers right everything on the table has a value the main value is the watch itself and then you've got some value for the box and some value for the papers because the box itself as retailers you know when we run out of boxes were actually continuously buying boxes because you can't sell a 10-grand how take on Rolex or whatever in a cardboard box it's nice it's the presentation that counts yeah so the print you know the box has a price and I'll tell the customer I'm saying look I'm sorry yeah I'm very interested with the watch and the papers but the box is not gonna be for me it's a fake Rolex box it I have nothing to do with it and then they they say are you sure and you know you get a lot of that when you're a dealer are you sure it's what I do for a living you know this is what I eat and breathe this is this pays for my food so yeah I'm hundred percent sure I'm really sorry but this is not gonna be for me and you know you knock a little bit of money it's not big money I mean what's a box worth right now 100 quid yeah it's probably on the retail market it's worth a bit more maybe 120 150 but let's say a hundred quid and you say look sorry I don't want the box and it's happened to me a few times now from the same company people that bought the watch from the same company they're selling the watches with box and papers and the boxes are fake high-quality fake fake you've got to tell your customer a few of them if you give in something that's kind actually you shouldn't give counterfeit you shouldn't have their own Explorer on it but if you're giving something that is aftermarket just say it yes I yeah because when they come to sell to someone like us or another dealer the dealer is gonna point those things out or for example if you're selling me a EA and this happened as well from the same exact retailer talking about the same retailer and I had a ceramic Submariner show up at the office the glass is fake and usually with fake glasses on ceramic watches sometimes the waterproofing is not the best so I have to account for that and I said I said look I'm sorry this is gonna cost me a bit of money to replace so my advice to you is go get your money back or ask them to replace it to an original one because they all yet they sold you the watch as a fully hundred percent all parts or onyx said they owe it to you go change it and bring it back I'll pay the full money or just return it you know they refuse to change it for him because they said we sold it to you have decent price and now we can get more for it so if you want we'll give you a full refund which actually I don't think is fair treatment just because he got it off you for a good price it doesn't mean you saw the Tim as a fully genuine all parts and I bet you one thing that glass is most likely actually not waterproof on ceramic watches yeah got to have a perfect fake glass yeah this opens up a whole can of worms from many circular and I'm sorry a lot and I'm wondering how these people are getting away with things I'm not talking about fake glasses sorry but you know the deal I was telling you about with a submariner 18 karat my customer he's born in 1993 so it's very important for him they every watch he buys since 1993 or made in 1993 so the one that we have is made in 1993 so he called me up he said I'm very interested in this watch can I come and see and this was before we closed he came and saw it and he's very interested in here and he told me the story that he had with this exact same retailer I know it sounds a bit maybe stupid but when you're buying a luxury item you're buying it with your heart not with your head it's a luxury item is something you don't need so little specifics that may not mean something to you as a dealer they mean something for that customer so in 1993 is a very important thing for him so when he bought the watch off him he asked him is this a 1993 watch they told him yeah 100% 1993 so the watch took the watch back home that an earth done a bit of research it turned out to be three years off so he said look I bought the watch and I asked you specifically in writing by email he asked him is it in 1993 watch it told him yes he bought him and he told him I know it might seem silly but I bought it based on that because he it relates into the year that I'm born and I like collecting watches from the same year I was born again I know it might seem stupid for a lot of people but for some it's an emotional purchase and it's a lot of money it's not even now I mean it that's a fairly straightforward questions well yeah I mean anyone but but here is and this is the same retailer by the way so took the watch back they they didn't refund them which I actually told him you should have fought for a refund because item not sold as described and they bought it off him fifteen hundred pound loss that's very no way I mean how do you get away with these things fifteen hundred pounds lost the guys had the watch for a few days and you sold it to him based on and he told them upfront it's a very important thing to me to be not buy we listen you know me I'll always try and stick up for dealers whenever possible but that's nice that sort of practice is unforgivable I mean the only the only caveat I would say with the public sometimes is it and I'm just being honest now and I'd be careful why I say because people need to you know hopefully try and understand my words very carefully here is that often or on occasions you can tell the public one thing and they either don't hear it or they fail to listen or for some reason it just goes in one ear and out the other and then when someone else tells them later on suddenly they understand and I'll give you a perfect example you will see this happen with aftermarket dolls where I know for a fact that some people have bought aftermarket watches with aftermarket dolls knowing full well what they're buying it's been explained limiting writing etc clients as well yes on the invoice you know it's been done everything is been done in the way in which it should have been done three four five years later they will take it the Rolex from a service products to say we're not going to services what because the dolls more original we want to replace the the doll when he said to all they'd not going to do it so and then the customer suddenly didn't hear what he was told and what's annoying four or five years ago so there is another side to that coin because as a dealer and I couldn't say this when I was a dealer I can say no I'm retired but let me tell you now there is a lot of deaf people out there when it comes to a complaint or a problem something you told them that they they they should have listened to they didn't listen I mean how many times have I stood in front of customers and told them how an automatic watch works and in less than a week they'll bring it back saying it needs a replacement battery come on you know so I stood there and explained this to you and you can but I think as well it's you know as a dealer it's also our job to be kind of you have to understand these people we take it for granted for what we know these people don't know what is they're buying and to enjoy them and you know what sometimes you have to explain once twice three times and I think we make enough money to justify the multiplier and solutely I'm not talking about the amount I'm not ever talking about the amount of time or education and I'm always happy to do that for free with people I'm talking about people's finish the side yeah and a lot of the public out there buying and selling what is I'm sorry it's the plain truth if you want to be a something nice and fluffy maybe it's the wrong person to be listening to buy I'm telling you now there are a lot of sinister people out here when it comes to buying and selling what is they will not think twice about working something into you as a dealer if I've got a problem with their watch they're not going to come and try and sell you that watch very few people maybe more faith in humanity isn't it should be but I'm telling you me very few people will openly tell you that there's an issue with a watch they'll let you find it ya know and I've been and that's the truth and there's a lot of noise people I know I've had a lot of genuine people would have bought me watches said look I bought you know I want to sell this watch but you know I've got to tell you how I dropped it last week you know what she's fine there's no need for them to tell me that there's nothing wrong with it they will tell you but then I've seen I've seen both sides you know buying and selling you're gonna see both sides of this you're gonna see the most people and the people are trying to deceive you but I can assure you one thing the three scenarios that I've given you are actually from exactly the same retailer yeah matter of fact over the past few months and I said I'm gonna put these away because it has I'm not I really want to be very careful not mentioning their name I have three fake boxes Rolex boxes modern ones in the office that I've put for disposal on the side and it has their sticker on it you can't sell fake boxes and say original box and papers I know it's only a box but it's just it's it's no it's only a box to a dealer to a private customer it's a lot more than just the box you know let's just lay it out a fake box is worth hardly anything hmm okay a fake box is cheap it's worth hardly anything on a rainy day you can probably get a hundred quid for your real box am I being honest there yeah if you put it on eBay maybe you can get 120 150 from a private individual yeah simple and so you can't do that to people and and I'm actually kept them aside and and it has their stickers on there I'm not going to name and shame but I don't think it's right oh I would actually ring them up and just politely sign some look you do know that this stuff's fine in my way five minutes five minutes and leave you know and make of it what you will you know you can't tell people what to though you can't tell people where to run their lives out to run their businesses but you can put them ways you can make them aware of other people I've seen what's going on here and you can know that you don't approve I don't think there's anything wrong with that I mean there's a lot of people make it also uses one of us one of the big boys by the way it's one of the big retailers but I think let's just leave it there I know it's paulus it's been great you know I mean we said we're gonna do a short video but you know what the floor the car I really liked it I really enjoyed it and I think I'm just gonna do it exactly as it is I'm not gonna cut it Mike we've got we've got a lot of time on my hands this is what I was telling Paul actually you know we might as well drop the question here I've never done a live stream and I was telling Paul this was actually going to be a live stream and I was telling Paul should we do a live stream should we're not and he said he said up to you if you want to do a live stream I'll do it live if you want to do it record it I'm just not used to doing live streams I don't know if that's something like if my channel is big enough to get enough people to watch if that's something you'd like to see on my channel I've got a lot of time on my hands right now so I'm more than happy to do so I'm sure Paul you don't mind popping on my live streams here and there so listen I'm making an extra effort in a moment to put some ink up for people who are stuck at home oh by the way David I know you won't mind I'm gonna give my new one okay yeah I actually wanted to ask her the stuff but you started answering my question straight away when I asked you what's new you were supposed to drop that yeah okay so what snow eater I am producing a new watch people's watch so I'm trying to do something a little bit different I'm hoping it's gonna be long lasting I did it tell you a couple of little funny things maybe because you know it does to me a little bit how bobbing fair and say that I put out a number or what's that number and I said to the guys white guys what's that machine is only please no phone calls no text messages what's a only right that was like 9 o'clock at night I've got fancy I go out the next morning and I'd 17 missed calls 17 missed calls 17 missed what sound calls I think you did say mainly to message isn't it I just saved message only guys you know bless them I mean they're very very key so look you know I'm hoping that I can deal with the I think I've had over 1700 what's that messages in less than a week and that types give you busy they just keep me busy but I'm trying to put together this new show and I'm gonna introduce all your different bits and pieces I want to bring in other people I want to bring in guests other dealers I want to do some reconstructions yeah well I want to do all sorts I want to do a little bit of humor although my humors a little bit dull sometimes a little bit Troy so not everyone will get it I had a taste earlier on before this time yeah so yeah I mean it might not be everyone's cup of tea but learn the ended up by I think we are in a position everywhere in the world right now on I'll finish up with another little read is that we all need to be doing something for someone else right now now if we're stuck at home wearing the headphones we've got the advantage is that we can help people by doing what we do and I'm gonna try on my name forever it's taken me three nice so far ready to try and get episode number two ready so I think I've bitten off maybe a bit more like and cheering so sorry when is the first one going now I'm hoping at the end of this waiting for ID I look forward to anyways guys I really hope you enjoyed the video I've had a very nice chat with Paul again I we always say we're limit how long the video is and we just go full on but you know what at this time we've got nothing better to do if they get fed up if something sometimes I think they get a bit too much of me in any case Burnie and like I said it's all about choice they can turn me off whatever they like and by the way I'm getting quite attached to the one go I don't visit my channel baby they tell you oh I've got well I think it's more than one actually you know whatever video Artois even if it's an hour long within the first five minutes it gets four dislikes regularly I mean I can count on it and I'm getting quite in last time as well we will discuss this I'm getting like I'm thinking if it's like a 20 minute video you gave me a dislike on the first few seconds of uploading the video you haven't yun listened so the job I mean I did a video the other day and it was like an hour long and after about 15 minutes f ed any dislikes but I'm thinking well waste my for regulars yeah I hope you hope they're not sick I think it's the same person by the way well thank you guys for watching I hope you enjoyed it I have to end the video by myself because Paul's mic just stopped working but please do make sure you subscribe to my channel subscribe to Paul and make sure to keep an eye out for the new show that he's doing and it's been quite of a long video and I think a time like this I've got a lot of time on my hands and I'm just going to be putting up as much content as I can and I hope you enjoy it and again don't forget to give the video a thumbs up and hope see you soon in next one take care
