economy was in absolutely dire straight still this slot sound like Dumbledore's just announced a holiday at Hogwarts hello I'm James O'Brien broadcaster and author it is three years since I recorded something called James O'Brien versus the government to go with the release of my first book how to be right and I think it's fair to say that quite a lot has happened politically in the intervening period so here is more James Brian versus the government just seen reports on Twitter that there was a Dow Street Christmas party on Friday night do you recognize those important I went home his fictional party was a business meeting even now nearly two years later not since the party since the footage emerged the entitlement and arrogance and contempt in that room is off the scale obviously important thing to remember is that that is a about an atmosphere that was in place all the time this isn't some sort of freakish breakout from normal service this is the attitude that they had to policies and privations that prevented you and me from visiting our mothers or even being able to attend funerals of loved ones but to them it was all a big chuffing joke extraordinarily poor Behavior became absolutely ordinary both in the the in the micro if you like of of government and Street and then in the macro of the country Su gry is the civil servant who investigated The Gatherings and now her full report is out it details multiple events and she tells us what took place at many of these gatherings and the way in which they developed was not in line with coid guidance at the time then there was this event on the prime minister's birthday for which he's now been fined I have been as surprised and disappointed as anyone else in this house as the revelations have unfolded let's start with the obvious that Boris Johnson said there were no parties and then he said that there may have been parties but that he certainly hadn't been aware of them and then he said that well actually there had been parties and he had been aware of them but he was not aware that they were actually parties even as he attended them think about what the media must have become to allow a prime minister to do that succession of wriggling and lying with more or less impunity with two or three exceptions getting absolutely cart blanched from the organizations and organs that are supposed to hold power to account in this country it's still blamed by some people for bringing Boris Johnson down and it probably was the the penal the biggest nail in the coffin but it wasn't the final nail in the coffin that was him lying about appointing Chris pincher to be deputy chief whip so they're still claiming that there was something unfair about this and of course Sue Gray's report although it was maligned and attacked by all of the right-wing media probably didn't go as far as it could have done because long after it was published we were still hearing stories of of yet more parties that had been attended by yet more people in Downing Street it's also worth remembering that the the birthday party where he that he got fined for sunak got fined for that as well that tends to get overlooked and forgotten in the in the mess that Johnson created is that everyone around him gets infected too and in this case the current prime minister I think that he somehow managed to infect everybody around him by a form of kind of Behavioral osmosis with a similar sense of entitlement stroke impunity and that to me is is a large part of why when the lid finally came off no one could quite believe just how much had gone on it is clearly now the will of the Parliamentary conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister the process that finally got rid of him was so long and drawn out because he would never admit the truth it's mad to think that it happened in the way that it happened because there are at least five events that would have ended any other Prime ministerial career by the time that Liz truss had run out of Road he was thinking about having another crack he was very very serious about coming back there's it's almost enviable that absolute absence of conscience I think it's a symptom of being a sociopath or being a psychopath just having abs absolutely no concept of what conscience feels like without even a cintilla of consideration for anybody's feelings but his own and that isn't just about other people it's about an entire country it's about Democratic Norms it's about all of the things that actually hold civilizations together if the people in charge of them treat basic decency and simple rules with complete contempt we're all screwed what what do you have a you you work in a business do you want some I'm I'm homeless and I'm actually homeless I managed to start changing the funding formulas to make sure that areas like this are getting the funding that they deserve because we inherited a bunch of formulas from the labor party that shoved all the funding into deprived urban areas uh then they you know that needed to be undone I started the work of undoing that therefore I give notice that Liz truss is elected as the leader of the conservative and unionist party come up it had an almost surreal flavor this battle cu the people who get to make the decision didn't want to be in the position to make the decision at all cuz they would have kept Boris Johnson it's just the pesky parliamentary party in the rest of the country that had finally run out of patience with his lies and moral corruption but looking back now my God what did we do to deserve this it's like having to choose between a sandwich and a ice cream made of hair when he made that speech about taking money away from God deprived urban areas CU who the hell would want to provide funding in deprived urban areas is and bringing it instead to Leafy tumbridge Wells he was in a homeless shelter when he asked that bloke queuing up for his breakfast if he was in business but truss's Victory is the other fascinating thing about this when Johnson was still in Downy truss's approval ratings were really really high and it was briefly puzzling as to why and then you realized she had inherited the mantle of snake oil salesman exactly what they wanted the sort of crack cocaine of brexit bollocks I mean how else could a fairly effective remain campaigner go overnight to being one of the most unhinged and and committed so-called brexiters so how did she win by actually becoming almost the embodiment of most of the things that are now wrong with Britain she was propelled to Downing Street upon a tidal wave of support from these dodgy Lobby groups that call themselves think tanks and never reveal who funds them but Lobby ceaselessly for the interest of the super rich she had captured the Ence of brexit by understanding that the bigger the LIE the bigger the Applause from the people that had voted for it kind of understood that keeping loyal to Boris Johnson would be the final piece of the jigsaw for a conservative party membership who would have put him ahead of her on their wish list for next leader 45p tax cut gone corporation tax cut gone 20p tax cut gone her supposed best friend the former Chancellor he's gone as well they're all gone so why is she still here Mr Speaker I am a fighter and not a I've been told that sella bman has resigned as Home Secretary Grant shaps who she sacked when she came into office in Downing Street just over a month ago is the new Home Secretary I really shouldn't say this but I hope all those people that put Liz truss in number 10 I hope it was worth it because the damage they have done to our party is extraordinary given the situation I cannot deliver the Mandate on which I was elected by the conservative party I will remain as prime minister until a successor has been chosen thank you to my shame I don't Rec I didn't recognize the Tory who told the truth that barely contained rage and dismay about what they have done to our party that was his perspective mine of course is what they have done to our country and of course the reason why we have moved on as I touched on earlier is because there's nobody really in the conservative supporting media which is of course almost all of it who is being as honest as that MP was being there and just saying this is this is just bloody awful how did this happen because the minute you start answering the question how did this happen you get to discover who is culpable who is guilty and and who is still as Liz trust demonstrates perhaps better than everybody refusing to take any responsibility with whatsoever for what they've done to all of [Music] us you cannot hope to bribe or twist thank God the British journalist for seeing what the man will do unbribable of Ace wondering which one was going to last longest but even they could read the writing on the wall and yet there's Liz truss claiming she's a a fighter not a quitter and and giving every impression of somebody who would have to be dragged out of Downing Street by her fingernails just like Boris Johnson did before her and we're back to that point about them all learning from the master which again gives you an idea of how boners everything has become don't forget that she not only had to resign in disgrace after a security breach that she executed herself I'm mistakenly thought that a it would be brief as in they'd all take each other out like that final scene of Reservoir Dogs and B that I'd enjoy it you keep remembering that the porns they were playing with and the and the stakes that they were gambling with that that it's us and our futures and our country and for them it's still still just one big game I can confirm uh that we have received one valid nomination and rishy sunak is therefore elected as leader of the conceptive foret the country was on fire economy was in absolutely dire straight still this slot sound like Dumbledore just announced a holiday at Hogwarts absolutely incredible the the the Detachment the level of Detachment and arrogance that you need to be engaging in that sort of behavior when the same people cheering in that room had put Liz trust in the top job just a few weeks previously it's truly breathtaking I thought well this has got to be better it can't be worse than Johnson's sort of moral corruption and utter delinquency followed by truss's just almost superhuman stupidity in ways it has been at least as bad and in some ways possibly even worse and and um that's where we are now still video has been circulating on social media showing an individual failing to wear a seat belt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire after looking into this matter we have today issued a 42y old man from London with a conditional offer of fixed penalty innocuous sounding enough if it weren't for the fact that that 42y old man is the prime minister and it's circulating on social media because he put it up there himself one of the reasons why all this keeps happening actually takes us right back to the first clip of algra Straton ask yourself who'd want to to work for people like this who who would actually want to go and work on their communication side or on their PR side or or as advisers for them the only people that would be attracted to to working for this sort of level of ridiculousness in politics so that's how it happens because he hasn't even got anybody with him who says you should probably put your seat belt on you have someone in your life whether they're on the payroll or they're just doing it from a place of Love or concern they will just quietly say and you're being a bit of a pratt now there's none is there in that setup there aren't any haven't been for years but bis Johnson probably got rid of the last ones Theresa May I think had Pratt alarms there aren't any and so that's how you end up with the policy equivalent of not knowing how to operate a debit card or being film not wearing your seat belt the policy equivalent of that you know abolishing a war on motorists that doesn't exist or or getting rid of a meat tax that no one's ever paid that's it's interesting I've not spotted that link before but it must be to do with the caliber of candidate for the jobs in the background for the jobs around them but for the conservative party and we need a decent functioning conservative party to have a decent functioning democracy just as we saw what happens when you don't have a decent functioning labor party under Jeremy Corbin saw in Johnson's cabinet on the public level things being so utterly diminished that absolute inadequateness obviously something very similar has happened as well three stories high you can see it has 222 uh bedrooms and uh from this summer uh will'll be home to 500 single male Asylum Seekers what's missing so far from this analysis immigration the great trump card the mother of all Jokers that these people pull out of their feted pockets whenever they desperately need to distract attention away from what they've done to the country after 13 years in power we put calls in actually to his office several never never got a word back we wanted him to provide us with evidence of an asylum Seeker in enjoying fourstar accommodation because what happens is a hotel that was previously a fourstar hotel ceases to be a four-star hotel and becomes instead an asylum Seeker Holding Center so even if it's still got a sign outside with four stars on it they're trying to create the idea that they're ringing down to reception and asking for um you know room service to be delivered to their room so if you struggle to understand as many decent people do the level of vitriol and hatred that is directed at at refugee or at Asylum Seekers that's why there is a perception that they've got a better life than you have which when you think about the number of people that die in the channel or the number of people that die trying to get to a place where they can get into the channel is palpably absurd but it's stoked up very very deliberately and very very disgustingly by people like soel braan and in this case Robert jri honest Bob jich those who travel to the UK by illegal and dangerous routes including by small boats across the channel may be relocated to Rwanda they have ruled that the government's decision or policy of deporting Asylum Seekers to Rwanda is unlawful they have reversed the earlier decision of the high court the requirement is to prove to a court that the destination to which these refugees are being shipped is safe General Sir Richard danet former head of the British army has spoken on the record about his experiences in Rwanda after the genocide there and how ridiculous he finds it or how wrong actually he finds the idea of sending anybody there let alone some of the most vulnerable people on the planet so when this thing was announced people like Ian Duncan Smith and other Tories were touring Studios saying well if the application is successful they'll come back here and they'll make a life here that's not true they would be taken to Rwanda and regardless of whether they turned out to be genuine refugees people who had fled persecution famine War people perhaps who had even helped the British Army in theaters of War if their application was found to be completely kosher they'd stay in Rwanda forever I'm announcing today that we're going to ease the transition to electric vehicles you'll still be able to buy petrol and diesel cars and vans until 2035 is this all because you're panicking about losing the election I've been thinking about these issues for a long time this is not actually about politics right this is not about the politics this is about doing what's right for the country in the long term we watch that back again actually you can hear the lie in his voice I like to think he's imagining his daughters watching it because he used to use them as the reason why he cares so much about the environment and he used to talk about how cross his daughters would be if he didn't speak up for it and do everything in his power to recognize the urgency of addressing climate change but the reason he did it was the Oxbridge by elction result where the tour is hung on by a whisker after Johnson got handed his sandwiches wrapped in a road map because an awful lot of people in the constituency believed untrue things about the ules scheme uh the ules expansion scheme ues of course was brought in by Boris Johnson as mayor but the expansion has happening on Sadi Khan's watch people in in arbridge believed that they were going to have to pay money to drive into the Zone it was geographically perfectly placed for this propaganda despite the fact that the massive massive massive majority of people who believed that wouldn't have had to pay money to move into the Zone I spoke to people on the radio who thought if you didn't have a 100% electric car then you'd have to pay the charge every time you drrive out of your own Drive whereas in fact you can have a petrol car a full pet don't even need a hybrid and you would be um compliant with the UL demand so having rushed to an a pic Victory if you like a kind of they lost loads loads and loads and loads squeaks over the line by a few hundred votes they thought well let's try and amplify that on a on a national scale and start wooing the people who think that climate change doesn't need to be seriously and urgently addressed by every government on the planet hs2 is the ultimate example of the old consensus the result is a project whose costs have more than doubled which has been repeatedly delayed and so I am ending this long running Saga I am canceling the rest of the hs2 project that might not necessarily have been a bad announcement I'm not an expert on hs2 it seems a bit stupid to me to build half a bridge and then call time on it before you've reached the other side of the river but 36 billion pounds of investment in transport infrastructure spent on a more Regional level might might be a might be a better idea it takes bigger brains than mine to know but within days of that speech the list of examples he gave of what would be provided by this spending was falling apart around his ear some of it already existed and then when pushed on detail they claimed that the things that were actually announced weren't actually announcements they were just examples of the sort of thing that we might spend the money on when we get around to spending the money again I this is the discovery of this little exercise today it's the people isn't it it's the absolute crapiness of of colleagues the whole machine is populated by idiots and charlatans and that's how you end up making a conference speech without anybody in the room saying hang on let's just check that tram line doesn't already exist well let's make sure that's actually something that people want no one did it so you just reads out a long list of things that are either being disowned denied or or or kind of binned before the memory of the speech has even even faded we will introduce the new rigorous knowledge Rich Advanced British standard which will bring together a levels and T levels into a new single qualification for our school levers it's as if all of the stuff that has been traditionally at the center of political decision making has been broken by by them so they can't really claim that they're going to look after the NHS for example or that they're going to look after the economy all of the big issues that matter most to us they've kind of quered their own pitch so that's why he's making announcements on subjects that you'd possibly never thought about before so when was the last time you woke up in the night and thought Oh we need urgent action on a levels it's just bizarre but probably the thing I hear most often from uh listeners and members of the public is how Keen they are to to have an opportunity to exercise their Democratic right or at least to have an opportunity to change government people really want an election if you were really serious about the long term why don't you just go to the country because that's not what the country wants that's I go out and about every day that not what anybody wants what people want is the politicians making a difference to their lives completely out of time thanks very much for having me very nice to see you next time next Party Conference will you still be here as prime minister yeah we've got lots to get on and deliver okay so you're going to be prime minister after the next election of course I'm working very hard to deliver for the country be okay he must wake up in the morning and think what that what am I doing I could have been living in California as a sort of tech bro in a in a$1 million house with my lovely wife and children and instead I'm dealing with this and I'm I'm trying to claim that things are going well or that people don't want an election it's it's you almost see it in his eyes you heard the catch in his voice earlier as I say I have to guard against feeling sorry for these people because they haven't ended up in these positions by accident and they sat on their hands while uh Boris Johnson kind of ruined everything and while brexit got ushered through but good grief it's incredible isn't it to see the contrast between observable reality and political rhetoric and of course that contrast now has been almost completely eroded by the failure of the much of the media Beth Rigby being another glorious exception to hold these clown com to account we could be here 3 years from now contemplating even more Decline and diminishment and if we don't have a change of government then we almost certainly will be or they could seek to return to the territory once occupied by by John Major um and as a patriot I hope they do the latter thank you for watching you can get the book how they broke Britain in hardback audio book or ebook by clicking on the link below and don't forget to subscribe to penguin for
