Jacob ker is proof that wrong notes don't exist and he proves this time and time again through his incredibly unique use of Harmony and his ability to understand how to navigate even the most complex Transitions and key changes and every once in a while we like to check in and see what Jacob has been up to recently and I was particularly Blown Away by his recent song called little blue little blue be my Shel be my CR be my w be my B Be My River be the still okay yeah one thing I love about a lot of the music that Jacob has done recently is it feels a lot like he came onto the scene especially his first album in my room which was loaded with just amazing music but for a lot of people it was a lot and I remember I would always show it to people and be like no you have to understand what this is and and sometimes the reactions I got especially from non-music people would be kind of like it sounds cool it's just like I don't know what to make of this cuz it's just so much but it seems like Jacob has developed this incredible balance where he's making so many things especially recently that really tow that line amazingly well of being very accessible for most people while still having incredible Harmony hidden inside and as we can see with the opening of this song I mean it's it's quite simple [Music] we have a very very straightforward dionic chord progression in E Flat starts on the four goes to the minor 6 and then I think we end up like I think we do just a 251 here so beautiful cuz you're not so far away I hear you say You'll Never Walk Alone okay that right there is such a great example of how Jacob will use clever harmonic tricks and especially in this context where they're super subtle but they still create this incredible passage that does very small things to subvert our expectations enough that it sticks out as like whoa what just happened there let's take a look at what that [Music] was where do we expect that chord to go right there then we go back to the G and I feel like this is really setting up an expectation where where it's going to go you know what I mean it just sounds like it's going to resolve right to there but instead of doing that Jacob throws in a little alteration here that takes it somewhere different while still ending up in the same place check it out C Minor 7 there's that G minor 7 Shar 5 a flat but then here we go instead of this going to f Minor 7 it goes to B flat minor 7 raise up a whole step another going up to to d flat and then finally resolve to E flat that is so slick and it's very subtle right it doesn't jump out at us it's like a crazy whacked out voicing that we've heard from Jacob many times in the past it's just it's very simple but it does a small thing to make us go ooh what was is [Music] that tasteful that's that's the word be afraid of in your heart you going to find a way to that's so beautiful one 2 [Music] 5 and then 2 3 four and then we get a little five before going [Music] back it's just a beautiful chord progression there's no other way to explain in the melody too the way the melody works with these chords is astounding come on this is where we get our taste a little taste of something that's very out of the key Center enough for our ears to go what without pulling us out of it entirely listen to this just so subtle but beautiful B major here B major 7 technically here right and that's kind of one of the first things we hear that's like ooh that's different because we've established this very dionic all those chords kind of work with an E major scale right that B major 7 really really changes that feel for just a moment because then we get a d flat major chord this is this is one of my favorite chords of all time so we have B major 7 d flat C Minor 7 sharp 5 and then the same chord but on G and then a quick four 51 oh it's so [Music] good a home did you hear that okay wait a [Music] minute all right here's what I think that is the first chord in that change is be E flat minor 7 and what I think he's going for here is we hear this transition of f to g flat to G and then the root goes it's like how how where did this come from B flat minor 7 and then we have a d I'm like 98% sure that's a d down [Music] there before going back to a flat major 7 I can definitely tell first chord is B flat minor 7 and then we have this going on it's a d of some kind with an FP is the melody so it's presumably a D major of some kind going to a flat major 7 but just what a subtle just tiny little thing but your ears pick up on it because it's so different it's so out of left feel that you're like what was that and that brings us to the part of the song that I think fascinated the most people this is probably the musicians favorite of this uh particular song and it's [Music] this you say You'll Never Walk Alone every moment you think that this is gone to its new place it gives you something additional that's new and it just every turn your ears just like like ooh ooh ah it's like this constant opening up right which is very fitting for the song I mean it's just every movement it feels very hopeful it feels very like it's brightening up I don't know if that makes any sense it's just like the feeling you get as these modulations work their way through different Keys here's what's going on there we start that section that we did earlier in the song and we expect it to go to a flat major 7 like it did before but we don't now we go to this this feels like an F major just with the a in the Basse right and from there now we've entered a new world we've entered the world of like and we're only there for a moment so you could say well what is that feel like does it feel like C major is the place does it feel like f is a four to me it kind of does but that's debatable and it kind of doesn't matter because we're immediately off of [Music] it that's very clearly like a two three four in the key of a major but only for a moment because then we [Music] get that move movement there which is like B major and then what is this here is that an F half diminished is it an A flat minor 6 maybe an A flat minor 6 right and then I think there's a slight switch right at the end before we go back where we get it transitions to a flat major and the reason I think it does that is because the melody the melody goes like that right I think at the very end it has to switch from a flat minor to a flat major just to facilitate that Melody motion but that whole thing in [Music] transition why wow but it's this complete harmonic freedom to just go anywhere and the method by which he's moving from key to key here is absolutely fascinating because the melody didn't change we still go to C but instead of going to a flat major 7 where it went the first time we're switching it just like that that is one of the most effective things you can do to throw the audience's ear for a loop and just kind of be like whoa there's a cord that nobody expected if you take the melody keep it exactly the same but now change the chord that's underneath it by using a common tone right it's the third C is the third of a flat major and if we're calling this like an F just with the third in the base then C is the fifth of f so it works for both keys it's just a different function in each key and now we've landed on a and we simply use that a to go to our next [Music] [Laughter] [Music] key and here we get the audience choir that he's been doing L live shows that those are some of the coolest videos I think I've ever seen that's got to be a transcendental [Music] experience don't be afraid of the light that's what you get when you have musically inclined audiences right [Music] your the of the world on your shoulders you're going to find your way unreal absolutely unreal and for me I think the thing that makes this so mindboggling is just the Pure Balance of something that is so subtle simple and beautiful and being able to put in that incredibly unique and creative Harmony and use musically brilliant devices to move around the harmonic spaces without getting in the listener's way that is such an art form and it's something that we've seen Jacob do time and time again this this song blew me away it's just absolutely fantastic but I want to know in the comments below what's been your favorite work from Jacob
