two and a half months ago on December 15th I embarked on a journey from the East Coast Where I Live Now back to Wisconsin to visit my family and friends there for the next 40 days and I decided I needed to pack over A month's worth of clothing including holiday attire all suitable for a very cold climate in one relatively small carry-on plus I of course gave myself the added challenge of maintaining a fun colorful expressive personal style because wearing only solid neutrals for 40 days simply would have sent me into a depressive episode so I put an extensive amount of time and effort into curating a collection of clothing that was versatile all worked together and still contained a lot of fun color pattern and my own personal sense of style so let me show you what I did by the way I did also document what I wore throughout those 40 days and some things I learned from the process so if you want a part two to this video about what I actually wore and how it went let me know in the comments but for today let me show you how I put together my colorful capsule wardrobe my first step in creating this capsule wardrobe was to make a mood board of the style I wanted to emulate during this trip I've seen other creators do style mood boards for vacations a season or just their personal style Tori catapusin and Amy Serrano have made some of my faves I highly recommend checking them both out in general I love both of their style for my own mood board I was thinking less about practicality and more just Vibes like what would be my ideal style for winter 2022 2023. basically I just pinned stuff I was drawn to with that time period in mind and I did this over a matter of weeks by the way not all at once which I definitely recommend because a it's just kind of fun I felt like I was curating inspo for like fashion editorial or an upcoming runway show it's just like a fun little activity and B this will also give you more time to think about what you actually want to bring so you don't get stressed out trying to decide at the last minute or make unwise impulse packing decisions thinking about The Vibes I wanted to channel over these 40 days ahead of time also helped me make sure I factored in any events but also the kind of lifestyle that I would have over this time like originally I was really thinking like holiday Vibes Christmas New Years and then I was like okay Liz you're two of the weeks are gonna be like the holiday season and then six more are going to be regular life so make sure you're collecting inspo for both so I collected all these pictures over a matter of weeks saved them in my little winter break 22-23 Pinterest board and then when we were like a week out from the trip I also went back through and removed pins that just weren't resonating with me anymore any images I was no longer feeling so I was just left with the looks I was really into [Music] at this point I went through all the pictures and took note of recurring themes so looking through these it was clear that I was feeling some rich Vivid colors especially red along with some neutrals there was also a lot of shiny and metallic pieces different cozy luxurious Fabrics like velvet quilting and faux fur and a few different patterns especially plaid in the case of silhouette I would say it was sort of a balance of straight lines and tailoring would still somewhat oversized or sculptural shapes and overall to me all of these elements add up to a generally funky vintage sort of 60s 70s inspired slightly glamorous holiday party Vibe so that's what I knew I wanted to look for in my own wardrobe to pack this Pinterest board is also linked in the description by the way foreign my next step was to choose items I wanted to bring from my own wardrobe that would be able to channel the style I was going for while also being practical for the circumstances so first I just kind of pulled out everything I wanted to bring I knew I wouldn't be able to fit everything but this was just my starting point and then I would narrow it down from there this included clothes that fit the style of the mood board like pretty much all my pieces with metallic faux fur plaid fun sculptural Silhouettes and fun 60s 70s feeling patterns and then also all my realistic comfy warm clothes that I knew would work for winter in Wisconsin spent mostly at home like jeans comfy lounge pants and numerous sweaters my next step is going to be to make some cuts of course but I just wanted to note the majority of my cuts were made on the basis of practicality for the weather practicality for the comfort of sitting at home and limited room in my suitcase not due to colors or patterns not being able to match each other I feel like there's often this really limiting idea when it comes to capsule wardrobes that they have to be this minimalist neutral aesthetic when that's simply not true so many colors and patterns can be paired together interesting shapes and details in clothing can still be super versatile and also it's not like all your sweaters have to match each other you're never going to wear your three sweaters at the same time I just wanted to touch on this because I feel like I can't talk about capsule wardrobes without mentioning this wider belief that neutral subdued minimalism is somehow the superior aesthetic oh but we're getting pretty off topic here so with all that said we gotta move on to the next step [Music] clearly there were many pieces I would have liked to bring that would have been great for the mood the vision The Vibes but I had to narrow it down to things I knew I would wear ideally on an everyday basis but at the very least for some particular occasion like Christmas or New Year's and like I already mentioned the context in which I would be wearing these things was a cold winter in Wisconsin mostly chilling at my parents house in like a random Suburban town so Comfort was really a top priority so at this point I took out things like any cropped shirts and shorter skirts and dresses except for the two I picked for New Year's and Christmas that I knew I could also layer with other skirts or pants on other occasions I also just brought one heavier long skirt because I knew most days it would be too cold even for a longer skirt and if it was warm enough to wear one a thicker fabric would be the way to go I also tried to choose my comfiest versions of every item even just Basics like t-shirts sweaters everyday pants Etc because I just knew that's what I'm most drawn to and realistically enjoy wearing the most especially if I'm just hanging out at home like obviously Comfort is always important but if I knew I would be leaving the house every single day and seeing people the Wardrobe would have been less Lounge heavy you know eventually I had to narrowed down to things I knew I would wear if I brought them but I didn't have room for all of them so now I had to pick the ones that would serve me the best over this time be the most comfortable and versatile that I would really want to wear again and again so first I looked at items all called duplicates things where I would wear both versions but they're similar enough that I only need one so for example out of my two plaid coats I chose the warmer one out of my two more formal pairs of shoes I chose the ones that would take up less space in my suitcase and out of my two vests I chose the more oversized one that would be better for layering over a multitude of things I also decided I wanted all my tops to look good on their own and be layerable under sweaters and jackets so tops that were too sheer to wear on their own were out tops that had giant sleeves that when layer well under things were also out and tops that I didn't like with the jackets I had already picked out also stayed behind the bottoms were actually extremely easy to choose because I own mostly neutral Bottoms in the first place so they go with all my fun tops and I knew they had to be really warm and comfortable so it was easy to just pick my coziest and most practical pants plus one skirt for the slightly less cold days I don't even really own enough pants to have to narrow these down so here they were it was pretty straightforward finally I did also allow myself a couple of what I'm going to call versatile indulgences things that weren't necessarily the most practical possible items but were worth it for me in the name of style and were still practical and versatile enough in the different ways they could be used that I decided they were worth bringing these pieces include the two dresses I brought with the holidays in mind along with this plaid midi dress which I knew would work better for slightly warmer weather but I brought it anyway for those slightly warmer days because long dresses are just so Central to my style it gave me also a more colorful option for the bottom half of an outfit and it did still match with all my sweaters while also bringing in more color I also brought this gold tank top for any more festive activities or nights out with friends obviously not weather appropriate on its own but I knew I could layer it over or under a number of other items and it took up such a small amount of space in my suitcase I thought why not add it in so after all that mood boarding choosing pieces and making the tough decisions and cuts based on Comfort weather matchability versatility packing practicality and personal style here are the final pieces I decided to bring we have eight tops five bottoms which also includes a pair of overalls six over layers such as sweaters vests or light jackets two coats three dresses and two pairs of shoes which totals two 26 pieces not too bad for 40 days both not too bad in that I think I did a good job narrowing it down but also not too bad in that that's still a lot of options for 40 days I also did bring some accessories which I didn't count as wardrobe pieces because they're not clothes and they take up virtually no space so I think that's fair but we do also have one pair of sunglasses one purse some tights and interesting socks some hair ribbons a few pairs of earrings and a necklace and four hats which might seem excessive but I love hats and it hadn't even been cold enough in DC to wear them and I wanted to get use out of them and let me tell you I did get use out of those hats and out of everything I brought so I would say this process was quite successful for me and I also had a lot of Reflections and thoughts and observations that I thought were interesting throughout the experience of trying the capsule wardrobe so again if you'd want a video on that showing what I actually wore every day and what I learned from it please tell me in the comments please also tell me what you think of this capsule wardrobe creation process did I miss any important considerations do you think this process can be improved upon did you learn anything from it that was valuable to you let me know in the comments oh and I heard if you do leave a comment watch another video such as this one that the algorithm thinks you would enjoy and subscribe to the
