[Music] thank you [Music] welcome back so I get thrusted into this college experience I get accepted to A M I joined a t Camp which is basically they teach you the Traditions you meet people before you get transferred into the college and they were having a get-together at the rec center and as I played basketball my entire life up until that point I went and played a pickup game and after that pickup game I met a person that we will call Brad and him and I bonded immediately because we both had a podcast so that was instant got each other's phone number and uh in the next few months he actually started a organization on campus specifically centered around content creation and one thing I want to highlight is if you start something in this case it was an organization a student org if you were to start a Discord or some sort of resource that people can connect and network through that will have opportunities drop in your lap because that is what I saw happen to him and I was just a part of it now that I know him personally we both are like the only two that know how to run a podcast or do one that really got us acclimated in our relationship and we figured out very fast that who was better at what and it was kind of like this nice set of skills that we both had that kind of met and meshed together he was more of the creative Savant type of what it takes to be a host what questions to ask the more thoughtful process of a podcast I was more of the technical stuff so I could be the the technical muscle behind the camera do the mic focus on the recording make sure that everything looks good the lighting so that was like very clear so as we brought our ideas together our skills together it made a lot of sense for him and I to work together so with that organization he was approached with two projects one of them was tasked with uh developing a business plan centered around the college so the college would have this studio and uh I worked on the business plan along with four other people at the time and it eventually got approved and what that taught me was not only how to make a business plan but I had to learn a lot of nuances on trying to build an equipment list it's like okay I'm gonna have to figure out what equipment to get that isn't my money I'm not spending a dime on this stuff and I need to make sure it's good and it actually works and that was kind of my first experience with a lot of responsibility with other people's money I have a lot of stories with that I had to kind of travel across the state to get experience and ask a lot of questions that I didn't even know to ask because I was finding out what good equipment is out there I was finding out Brands how to shoot and how to do this how we could do this and building out a studio for my first time the thing about a college institution is that it takes a very long time for them to make decisions anywhere between six months to two years basically it takes a a lot for the ship to turn in this process some people were graduating out of the project and some were just getting tired of it but at the same time the other opportunity that came to this student or organization was that since Brad and I were the only ones that had podcasts we were approached by the business school to start a podcast so naturally he's like hey man I just got reached out by the business school uh do you want to have a conversation with them I think you could do the technical side I could I don't know do some of the marketing and all that stuff I was like yeah that's awesome let's do it and the ultimate kicker was like hey also we're getting paid I was like what we get to get paid to make a podcast that's what an insane concept so of course I was all I was all for it meetings went well we met with the co-producer and uh the head of the department it was for an MBA programs because monetarily you wanted to pitch the idea of the podcast being a resource for not only media presence but it could be a lead magnet for the program itself and if anyone is familiar with MBA programs I believe the school offered executive full-time and professional programs and any of those range from 60 to 120 000 a student so really long story short on that end we actually got the testimonials from at least two of the three students that joined the MBA program so at the time I was eventually the only producer on the show the whole show fell on my shoulders because of Brad basically got fired because he didn't want to do anything as that came on to me I produce a show for like 150 episodes every single week straight for two years and with that opportunity those two to three students that actually listened to the show liked the content and checked out the program because of the show we talked about the experiences what it's like to be on campus what it's like to be a student what opportunities it has provided that brought those listeners in and I cost close to I think ten thousand dollars to produce the show for a year and with those two students okay so if we're looking at ten thousand dollars and two students just got into the program that's anywhere between a hundred and twenty thousand dollars to two hundred thousand dollars so a nice Roi for the program and an absolute no-brainer to keep the show going that was kind of The Proven path but we didn't get those numbers immediately it probably took about a year and a half to get that first student and then shortly after we got the second one probably at the close to the two-year Mark and then I'm sure there's more because the show is still going on uh I did it for about four years and it was a nice contract to have and it absolutely upped my skills so I mentioned the studio that got off the ground but it died pretty quickly because the Innovation Department that approved it eventually had to move and then they actually dissolved into a different program so all of that equipment went to somewhere else I don't even know where it is now but both of those experiences uh got me familiar and made me figure out the nuances because if I was going to be the head of both of these two projects and not only spend a lot of time and have a lot of conversations to people to help me with the projects I needed to make sure that they were right and that they were usable and that we could actually use it for a long time and and I got really lucky because not only what was I working with good people but I just absolutely fell in love with it and there's a lot of luck in that I didn't know I would be so involved with media at the time I was just freaking stoked to get paid for it and uh and it really propelled me into what I'm doing today it made me figure out a lot of the nuances not only in the software but just physically I'm gonna keep trying to tell as many stories from that experience as possible but this is the basic rundown of where I started really professionally on my own and as an expert is from these two experiences with with building out Studios also producing this podcast and what's really beautiful about the whole thing as we brought things online is that Sarah my fiance has been with me the entire journey and she's and she's seen all of it so it's like a really cool experience for us to kind of look back on how this is all started I really want to thank my mentors at the time can't say their names on here but uh they know who who they are if they have some really important conversations with me and uh most importantly there's a lot of times where I failed I would ask for a few hours or a day because I was doing so much up until that point I never said no all these opportunities were coming my my way because I I never said no I always said yes and once they kind of sat me down to have that talk the co-producer and the head of the department for the podcast they're like hey you're doing a lot you know we recognize that everything that you've done so far is because you said yes like you're gonna have to learn to say no my friend and being young and dumb and really uh persistent those are some of the hardest lessons and probably one of the bad worst habits that I have now still still working on it but uh I want to of course thank my fiance because she's gotten me a lot better at it to work on things that are not only worth my time but that are going to overstretch me and stress me out because I would always take those things on having those failures I want to kind of jump into the next episode because uh seeing your mentors not only care about you but letting them down really has an impact on you and it did for me so I'll see you in the next one thank you [Music]
