[Music] [Music] all right guys what is up youtube what is up everyone man in today's video i want to do something that i've not done since the beginning of this channel which is actually go over once again how i became a developer in three months if you have known me from the beginning you know my story i shared parts of the story throughout all my videos the last four years the reason i want to make this video again and how i became a developer in three months is that when i first shared this four years ago and the video unfortunately went viral right when i first shared this i shared it as a story and that was it i just wanted to share my story with the world and how my life has changed just because i wanted to study code but in this video today what i want to talk about is something entirely different well it's the same story but i don't just want to tell you a story today i want to tell you my entire thought process and what i was doing why i did what i did in detail hoping that at least there's some little nugget that you'll find at least one little golden nugget in this video that can help you get your foot into the door and become a developer all right so to go ahead and talk about this topic man i need to give you a titan context bros let's go back to five years ago a year before five years ago so six years ago life was hard as hell right just like everyone else who's struggling who lives in california who doesn't have a good job man so about six plus years ago dudes i was living in bellflower bellflower california man and in this ghetto i literally did live in the ghetto the main person at the house i was renting she was going to a car and someone actually came into our driveway put a gun like pointed at her face and they literally jacked the car in her bag right in front of the house like it was that get it where i lived and fortunately rent was really cheap i only had to pay 250 bucks a month to live there actually i couldn't even afford that but i had no choice but to do that and i was i remember for literally nine months sleeping on the wooden floor and just like dude it's not comfortable man and doing that for so long to be honest and living in a situation and barely having enough food to eat every single day and asking people for money is the most humiliating and humbling thing i've ever had to go through and i never want to go through that again but you have to understand when you're in that situation what goes on your mind is what did i do to get here like why do i deserve this why is this happening to me but the reason i was in that situation is because it's literally this i did nothing i literally did nothing to make sure that i can have a good future have a good career because i was just thinking after struggling for so long thinking that this is my reality forever but i did not want to accept that i didn't want that to be me so i tried to do so many different things from that point on they changed my life i tried to be an electrician i failed because i didn't graduate college i almost dropped out of high school so i wasn't good at math at all even though i enjoyed it so i filled the entry exam i tried being a nurse i went to community college again i dropped out because i freaking hate school right i try to do so many different things man i did regular jobs trying to work in the office and i'd even did sales which i was really good at but sales is not something i'm in love with even though i know i'm good at it man so i was in a situation dudes man i felt like the whole universe was out to get me because no matter what i tried i kept failing but even though that was the fact even though that was the point of what was happening in my life at the time i did not want to accept defeat now i want you to understand man this is the reason i generally believe that i'm where i am today is that i never accepted defeat even though when i felt defeated i did not allow myself to stay in the ground news i kept getting up over and over and over again until i found something and so when i finally had a decent job paying like 18 bucks an hour working 110 beach for this audio visual company as the executive assistant i saw a video for i was watching videos doing work yes i was doing that during that job i watched a video of bill gates man watch a video bill gates and not even just that even mark zuckerberg and even jack the founder twitter and even what's his name from black eyed peas will i am right and even chris bosh was in this video who was with the miami heat they said this that coding was easier than it realized that you do not need to be good or smart i mean to become a developer that you don't need to be good at math to become a developer and when i read that i'm like whoa what the heck that's crazy and when i heard all these people that we all know who are freaking intelligent as hell say that you don't need to be as smart as you think to code then i believe them and i'm like wait maybe this is my way out maybe this is my way to actually survive and make a good living and so what did i immediately do after that i started learning code i mean i literally just went to google and i googled how to learn code yo there are so many videos that popped out it is insane i found so many coding websites there's so many places you can learn from me from udacity from free code camp from all these different companies right and unfortunately the first link that was at the top was teamtreehouse.com and yeah i gotta be honest man i clicked the website i did the seven day free trial i tried learning code for 30 days and then i gave up i don't tell this to many people i gave up i gave up because i kept thinking yo this can't be me this can't be me like yo like i'm not that smart like i don't i couldn't grasp it i was learning html only html and i gave up thinking that this won't happen anyway what am i doing i'm literally just wasting my time man and then what happened is that literally after i gave up let's just say six months later okay six months later what happened was that the company wasn't doing that well so even though i was making 18 bucks an hour they decreased my hours to like 30 hours a week instead of 40. so dude my pay decreased significantly and so i left a job to work for them for more pay and then they decreased my pay by decreasing my hours and because of that meant i became desperate again and i was like what do i need to do what do i need to do and what's crazy that when i went on youtube.com all my recommendations what did i see the exact same video that you do not need to be smart to learn code it was like all right is the world trying to tell me something and so when they come in hours a minute i had no choice like literally my back was up against the wall because i could barely afford to pay for health insurance which is really expensive my medicine which was even more expensive right i couldn't do all that and so what did i do because my back was up against the wall yo i'm lazy i'm really lazy and it takes me a long time to learn but because my back was up against the wall i had to do something so what did i end up doing i went back to treehouse.com and i started learning code again man it's crazy and so what i did was like all right you know he cut my hours it was kind of like payback for me too because even then let's say when i went back in treehouse because i'm an introvert to be honest guys believe when i'm an introvert i didn't like making friends with people at that company because i just didn't feel like i related with them no one talks about gaming and i'm just the executive assistant work in the office while everyone's in the warehouse and etc and they actually said chris if you don't make friends with people here like you don't even go out to lunch with anyone you're just doing your own thing and it literally knows because i was trying to find a better job they threatened to fire me and so because they threatened to fire me at this company in huntington beach i was like you know what after you guys i'm gonna do something i'm gonna change my life right away and there's something really important i wanna talk about when this happens okay i hope i remember to say this later oh my gosh this is crazy so all right you know what that motivated me when it threatened me like you know what i'm not gonna be treated like trash no more i'm not gonna allow myself to be just trash and be someone who's life and future depends on whatever my boss says and so what did i do i freaking went all out learning code during work i would study whenever there was nothing to do and my boss wasn't looking i would study code i didn't own a computer i couldn't afford one so when i was now work what i would do with my girlfriend at that time with me dory i would actually borrow her laptop to learn code on the weekends then i give it back to her at the church go back to work monday and do the same thing over and over again then it got to the point when i started building websites i went to the ceo and i'm like hey i can make a better website for you and he said no right but this was three months man i've already built up a basic portfolio because using treehouse that's it and you look description below if you guys don't check them out by the way i built a basic portfolio i just went to a youtube video you know and i copied how to build a basic website using bootstrap literally there was a youtube video they built a bootstrap website in front of you they showed you all the code and how to do it i literally copied and pasted not copying pasted i had to type out all the code that i learned and boom voila i made my first actual website found treehouse but i use a youtube video and so this time three months later right three months after learning code the boss well the boss says both of them went up to me i'm like chris uh we got to give you another warning because chris you seem distracted during work i wonder why you don't seem to be focusing it seems like you're missing a lot of things here and there and really it's because i just really hated that job by this time and i was just focused on code to be honest because i was actually starting to enjoy code for once and then they told me chris like we got to give you one more shot that's it like they gave me another warning and after they told me that i'm like you know what why am i going to wait one year to learn code why am i going to wait one year to become a developer why do i have to wait one day to start applying and so i told myself man i need to start applying to jobs now i need to start fine even if i don't look like i qualify you know what chris you never know so i started trying to motivate myself i try to give myself more opportunities by encouraging myself to go out there and put yourself out there and yes i'll get rejected so what i started doing is that every week i made it a goal even if it doesn't make sense even if it doesn't look like i'll get the job even if i do not qualify whatsoever three months of coding remember this i will apply anyway so i did that i made sure to apply to at least three jobs every single day monday to friday during work i didn't do it on the weekends and so every day and just you know what why not and what's crazy that on my second week i saw this job ad on craigslist it was for a christian company okay and they were looking for a developer they're looking for someone who was full stack they were looking for someone oh first please note that i replaced someone who went to nasa okay so they're looking for someone who is skilled really skilled and so i applied but they were looking for someone who knew php laravel html css javascript jquery who knew a lot who was a really good developer right and then so i applied but because they said to a christian company i'm like you know what wait i'm christian too so i sent them my application i sent them a link to my port well not even portfolio just the one website i made and of course no one responded to me but why would they because i'm a junior developer i have no experience at all whatsoever i don't even know javascript i barely know css i barely know html so i just had that hunch like you know what you can get a job here you're christian try to use that to help you right like why not i'm a christian so maybe they might help me and so what i did is that i called the company i called them and asked hey um my name is chris i just sent it on my resume and i was wondering if you guys are still hiring for developer position what's really funny though is because the cto or technical director who is now my good friend tony i think he was busy at that time so he couldn't speak with me about the interview so they literally forwarded me to the ceo who put that ad on craigslist i spoke to him and i was like hey my name is chris assange's resume etc i'm a christian too blah blah blah i told him like hey i'm really interested in your position i just started learning code but i would love to be able to get that opportunity to work for you guys and then what happened next he said all right awesome send me your resume again and i guess he didn't see it i sent out my resume again and then we actually ended up meeting the next day so i send them my application on friday and you wanted me on saturday when they're closed and i'm like whoa they want to be on saturday when it's closed that's probably a good thing i went to the office and then i was there arrived on time but then the ceo was actually like an hour late and he was an hour late because he honestly is really busy when i see how he works now he's really busy anyway man so we finally went into the office when we arrived we sat in the conference room i remember this vividly man set across from each other he asked me to show him the website i mean it was the bootstrap website because of a processing company i really want to show that i know how to make forms i made a form in bootstrap by the way showed it i did apple airplay shared my screen to the freaking monitor showed him and then literally after talking about just like church stuff too he offered me to position on that day he asked me what i wanted to earn he paid me way more than that job does threatening to fire me right so he he gave me the job at the moment i accepted the next few days he sent me the offer letter and i told him i'll join in a week and so that following monday man you have to understand how good this felt because my last job prior to that literally threatened to fire me i went to the office i went to the boss and said hey i need to speak to both of you guys or two bosses tell them i'm quitting yo that was so satisfying that was so freaking satisfying and what's so funny is that literally months down the line after let's say three months the manager from that company had quit saw me like chris because he's taught me my car and everything he was like chris how are you doing i'm like hey man i'm doing well i'm a web developer now full time and everything right it's so satisfying to see that person tell them that i'm actually making good money now compared to what you guys were paying me right but anyway like that's how it happened that's how i became a developer i know it's a long story but i guess the moral point of the story was even when it felt like the whole world was against me and i had reason to believe that i kept finding ways to encourage myself and motivate myself because even when things felt impossible for me i made sure to keep going now i did hope that before i became a developer applying for all these other jobs i needed i gained a lot of experience in just interviewing in general and i generally believe that by failing so many interviews it helped me become better at speaking answering questions than i did to prior interviews to that right that's how i did it that's how i became a developer in three months which is absolutely insane i'm just like three months of consistently coding you don't have to be the best to do this but i think what's really important is yes we have to know code but sometimes i think that people wait too long to apply to their first job sometimes i think that people wait until they're really good at it to even apply no don't do that because let's say you are learning code right now and you don't apply to particular jobs out there i'm gonna tell you this those jobs will be gone in the next few weeks so you have nothing to lose by applying anyway apply it to just say two jobs if not one job a day every single day while you're learning code because you never know what opportunities are out there waiting for you guys anyways man it's simply literally because of that i am where i am now today i hope you guys enjoyed the video i love you all if you can help this video go out there to millions of people man leave a like in this video and if you even can leave a comment let me know what your thoughts are how lucky am i what did i do to get here it was just luck but it's not just that i was persistent as hell love you all thank you guys for watching this is krishon this is a life of web developer and i'm out peace
