How FERRARI WON the 24 hours of Le Mans in 2023 (Ferrari 499P hypercar)

2023 marked the 100 year anniversary for the famed Lamont 24 hours although the desire to win remains just as high as it has always been over these past 100 years the racing itself has changed dramatically it's now more flat out more aggressive and more Tactical so for this Centenary race we are going to follow the number 51 crew of X Formula One driver Antonio giovannazzi and his back-to-back GTE world champion teammates James collado and Alessandro Pierre guidi as they attempt to bring Ferrari back to the top step of the overall Podium after a nearly 50-year drought with the 50 car on pull position and James collado just one spot behind Ferrari had a perfect start to this weekend but since this is a 24-hour race where you qualify is nearly irrelevant and as this pay slap continues we can see that it's drizzling out on the mosa on straight but it's dry everywhere else this is going to make the start of this 24-hour race especially challenging but as they head through the fortune cane Nicholas Nielsen and his Ferrari 499p is going to lead this field of 62 cars to the green flag James collado is hard on the throttle down this front straight As LeBron James waves the French flag we can look back and see a field of hyper cars swarming Behind These two Ferraris Felipe Nazar locks up into turn one and clips the back of Sebastian bohemy's Toyota who just barely avoids getting into the back of James collado the Ferraris are able to stay ahead but just barely I should mention that they're starting on medium tires but the Toyotas behind are starting on softs so James collado is going to have his hands full trying to stay ahead of Sebastian whimmy in the number eight and Mike Conway in the number seven but as they head onto the most on straight it is a venture into the unknown because as I mentioned this wet track is going to be especially challenging on the Ferraris with their harder tires and we can hear that as Nicholas Nielsen heads into the first chicane he is being so delicate on his breaks trying to be as cautious as possible while maintaining the lead these two Toyotas are all over the back of James collado and as he puts the power down heading onto the most on straight Sebastian puemi has already passed in the number eight and his teammate Mike Conway is going to follow him through Toyota has the advantage early on with these soft tires and they're going to look to make a move on the number 50 car as well heading into the second chicane when he looks to the inside but is blocked by the 50 Ferrari of Nicholas Nielsen the Ferrari is able to maintain position into the second chicane but it just looks like a matter of time until these Toyotas find their way by [Music] and as they head into fast Indy Sebastian whammy makes the move around the outside on the number 50 Ferrari despite locking out the front row Ferrari will not be leading at the end of the first lap and heading into Arnage Mike Conway is going to look to find a way past but Nicholas Nielsen just defends into the slowest corner on the track keeping that Toyota behind for one more corner but as they come through to complete this first lap they are no longer at racing speed as a yellow flag has come out the safety car is going to temporarily save these two Ferraris which are struggling on their harder tires and allow the field to stay bunched up for the next 35 minutes or so but as the race goes green one more time Toyota is going to have the advantage once again on these softer tires it's a slide for Mike Conway coming out of the final Corner looking to press that Advantage as early as he can Mike Conway is going to get a good launch out of most on Corner though and tuck in behind Nicholas Nielsen in the number 50 car as they head down the street Mike Connor is going to pop out to the right hand side before the second Kink and make his move up into second place we'll have to wait to see if Ferrari can find more Pace as these medium tires heat up a little later on in the stint though as they exit Ted Rouge and head onto the most on straight we can see that Ferrari have started to find the pace and Nicholas Nielsen is going to look to put pressure on Mike Conway in the number seven Toyota in front Mike Conway guides his car over to the right hand side of the track to defend heading into the first chicane Nicholas Nielsen looks to the outside but there just is not room but Conway is deep into this first chicane pushing that Toyota as hard as he can Nicholas Nielsen gets the better exit gets right back in the draft without Toyota heading into the second chicane once again Mike Conway is going to defend the inside but Nicholas Nielsen forces the issue goes onto the shoulder of the road and breaks as late as possible up the inside of the Toyota who breaks later and Mike Conway once again is able to hold position from this number 50 Ferrari behind all of this fighting though is allowing James collado to catch up in this number 51 Ferrari he's gonna get the draft of both the Toyota and his teammate in front and looks to the inside but thinks better of it and lifts out of the throttle still a long way to go in this race but Nicholas Nielsen up front is being as aggressive as possible breaks it late heading into most on corner and finds his way past Mike Conway in the number seven Toyota bringing Ferrari back up into second position overall Nicholas Nielsen though is now giving a draft to Mike Conway in the Toyota behind so he is going to weave from side to side to try to break that draft and not allow the Toyota to catch up James collado looks to the inside but thinks better of it but now Mike Conway has the run on the Ferrari up front who's just gonna squeeze him off the road as they head into fast Indy Nicholas Nielsen able to fend off that Toyota behind and is going to consolidate his position up in second place but before the end of the lap Nicholas Nielsen is actually going to pull off the track and have an early pit stop that number 50 crew which will promote James collado in a number 51 car up into third position and he will now work to hunt down this number seven Toyota up front heading into the first chicane Mike Conway is going to break as late as possible but it's slightly too late he goes really deep into the first element is compromised on the exit and that allows James clotta to get his nose on the inside of the Toyota as they go through the s's but just thinks better if it bleeds out of the throttle and allows Mike Conway to slot back in front heading into tetrus James collado is all over the Apex curb and uses so much curb on the exit as well he carries much more speed onto the straight these medium tires now working perfectly on this 499p James collado safely in the draft of Mike Conway who defends to the inside but James collado is easily around the outside and up into second position we can look back from his Ferrari and see a line of hyper cars behind this number 51 car but as this lap goes on he is going to slowly start to extend the lead on this Toyota and the rest of the hyper cars behind and by the end of the stint he will have outlasted his competitors on this fuel tank and be in first position as he Ducks into the pit Lane but we're actually going to jump ahead to the end of James collado's triple stint because with a slow Zone on track he is going to pit a bit earlier than he normally would this will Shuffle the number 51 car behind a number of its competitors but obviously the strategists think that the time saved by pitting now will outweigh the cost of having to work their way back up through the field on track as the 50 car pulls away Antonio giovannazzi is going to jump behind the wheel of this number 51 and the crew is going to bolt on a fresh set of tires for him the pit stop done jovanazi pulls away from the pit box and unleashes his 499p back out onto the Le Mans track jovanazi is quickly up to Pace in this number 51 car and is already closing in on the hypercar field up front we can see that 9x8 is stuck in traffic as they head to the Fort chicane jovanazius all over the curves on the inside and the outside and is hard on the power gets a better exit than that French made hyper car up front is going to look to the inside of the wingless monster as they head into the Dunlop curve and jovanazi finds his way up into sixth position trying to quickly work his way through this hypercar field to bring the Ferrari back to the front of the pack [Music] as they head down the street into Indianapolis we can see one of the 963s making his way past that beloved Rexy and Geo Nazi makes his way past as well this Porsche gets caught behind a slower hyper car though and this allows jovanazi to close the gap as they head into Arnage and if we look at his windscreen we can see a little bit of rain starting to fall as well as they head into the slowest corner on the track the Porsche is going to get hard in the park it gets a big this allows giovannazzi to easily find his way past that factory Porsche and he's closing it dramatically on the privately entered jota Porsche which is right up front through the forge of cane we can see how much more aggressive jovanazi is on the curbs compared to that Porsche 963 up front he slams The curbs in the left-hand side slams The curbs on the right hard on the power coming out of the final corner and Tucks into the draft of this Porsche 963 into the Dunlop curve he's going to look to the inside the Porsche defends the inside and jovanazi goes around the outside through the Dunlop curves at aggressive pass brings that X Formula One driver up into fourth position [Music] the next time coming out of our knowledge into the Porsche curves the rain has increased dramatically though it has become almost undrivable on these dry tires as he goes through the Porsche curbs he's going to get a big snap of oversteer and the 94 9x8 is going to slide past up into third position but with the weather conditions becoming a torrential downpour that is going to bring out a safety car and the Ferrara team is going to change from their dry tires onto the wets oh it's the lollipop guy barely gets out of the way in time that number 51 car it was a long safety car period though and Ferrari is going to roll the dice again with strategy and both on a set of dry tires with this safety car still out on track this will once again put them to the back of the hypercar field but with track conditions drying out it does seem to be a safe bet for them to jump onto these dry tires [Music] and as the race goes green we can see that immediately three hyper cars peel off the track to change over to dry tires just as the Ferraris did and coming to the fortune these two Ferrari drivers are going to look to put pressure on the hyper cars up front of them field once again hurdles across the start Finish Line and up into the Dunlop curve jovanazi is going to break as late as possible heading into the chicane putting pressure on his hypercar teammate up front he clatters the curb on the left-hand side clatters the curb on the right these hyper cars nowadays are built so tough but as they head into tetrus Miguel Molina is all over the back of this Cadillac up front who gets a bad run through the corner but there's a slow Porsche on the exit of tetrus they're gonna go three wide around the Porsche Miguel Molina is going to use the draft of this Cadillac to get ahead and up into third position jovanazi is going to try to follow his teammate through and pass the Cadillac he makes it three wide with two wheels on the shoulder we could look from on board the number 50 car and see a Porsche up the end died and passes Joe manazzi who has to take the runoff through the first chicane that Porsha from absolutely nowhere as Molina now gets to better exit coming out of the chicane the Ferraris are side by side but jovanetti has the draft from the Porsche up front and is going to try to stay ahead of his teammate jovanetti now closing in on the Porsche as they close in on the second chicane looks to the inside two wheels on the shoulder once again he sends it late on the brakes up the inside of the portion goes two wheels on the curb and narrowly avoids hitting that Porsche as he slides through the Apex the Porsche gets a big slide on the exit and now Molina around the outside with a massive snap of oversteer on the exit once again ahead of Joe vanazzi it is an absolute dog fight for this final step on the podium and as they head into fast Indy we can look up the road and see the Porsche has made it around one of the 9x8s and the two Ferraris are gonna look to follow their way past that French made hypercar coming out of slow Indy and into Arnage Miguel Molina closes the gap and coming out of Arnage that 9x8 just has no grip and Molina easily finds his way around the outside on the exit that 94 car losing two positions in the span of three corners jovanazi is going to try to make it three in the span of four as they come into the Porsche curves giovannazzi is up the inside of the 9x8 who is struggling on this first green flag lap and makes it Ferrari 3-4 with the factory Porsche up in second position and the Privateer hurts Joda Porsche up in first heading into mohsan Corner we can see that Dane Cameron in this number five Penske Porsche has now fallen behind Miguel Molina in the number 50 Ferrari then Cameron's gonna get held up at the Apex by this Aston Martin GTE car and it's going to allow gymnastic to close the gap on this number five card jovanazi closes in the draft of this Porsche as they head into fast Indy but just isn't close enough to go for a move quite yet coming through slow Indy and into Arnage he looks to consolidate the Gap once again as this Porsha finds GT traffic through the Apex of our knowledge jovanazi tucks in as close as he can to this Porsche 963 up front which is hard on the throttle passing another Aston Martin GTE car going down the straight into the Porsche curves Joe Nazi looks to the outside but there's a yellow flag up front Joe Nancy has to pull out of it a loud Dan Cameron to pass once more and he's going to settle in behind this Porsche through the slow Zone with the slow Zone ending jovanazi is free to once again hunt down this 963 Porsche which is caught behind a GTE Ferrari as they go through the s's jovanasi is up the inside of that Ferrari aggressively passing the GTE car as he hunts down this number five Porsche through tetrouge juvenatti is going to hammer the Apex curb and use all of the road on the exit as he tries to close the gap on Dane Cameron this number five Porsche as they haul down the most on straight into the first chicane Dan Cameron is as late on the brakes as possible but slightly too late slides the rears locks up goes wide and allows jovanazi to find his way through up into third position now just two cars ahead of jovanazi his teammate and the number 50 and that privately entered jota Porsche which is surprisingly still leading the race overall as they head to the Porsche curbs the number 50 Ferrari up ahead is cut behind a slower lmp2 car and as they exit the Porsche curves there's a slow GT car up front the lmp2 tries to go around the outside that holds up Molina who has to slam on their brakes to avoid jovanazi is through past his teammate but look to the right because that's the jota Porsche as well the leader has crashed leaving debris on the track and Jovan Nazi is through into first position two passes in the span of about five seconds for the number 51 car which now leads the race overall but despite leading the race something really surprising is going to happen jovanazi is going to pull to the right hand side of the road and allow his teammate to pass as they enter the pit Lane we can remember how tight these pit boxes are and if jovanazi had pitted first it would have blocked his teammate from entering the pit box so jovanazi was actually playing the team game here giving up the lead of the race so that his teammate could have a clean Pit Stop I can't imagine how difficult it must be to give up the lead in the Le Mans 24 hours that's really impressive stuff in my opinion and shows you just how seriously this entire Ferrari crew is taking winning at this Le Mans 24 hours as the stint continues though jovanazi is closing in on his teammate in number 50 car just because he let him pass heading into the pit Lane does not mean he's going to let him off the hook for the rest of this stint heading into the most on Corner this number 50 car is caught behind a GT no sends it up the inside in the breaking Zone and so does jovanazzi closing in even further on the number 50 car and as they exit mohsan corner and head down the street into Indianapolis the number 50 car ahead is going to lift off of the throttle and get team orders to allow jovanazi to take the lead of the race one more time and as day turns to night this 51 car will continue to lead the race but despite these fireworks going off in the distance there is no celebrating for this Ferrari hypercar team because they know that at any moment anything could go wrong and that especially here at night danger lurks around every corner and as alessandre peregrity hurdles done the most on straight into the first chicane an lmp2 car hits the back of a GTE and Alessandra peregrity spins in avoidance ending up in the gravel and as he tries to pull away we can see that the car is beached he is stuck and will have to await rescue in order to get back on track this Spin and crash is gonna cause a slow Zone and that slow Zone causes some confusion as an LP2 stops and the number seven Toyota is hit from behind by a GTE Ferrari this race contending Toyota involved in a major accident heading into the slow Zone caused by the Ferrari is going to try to continue under the car's electrical power but is not going to be able to do so Ferrari's biggest rival at Toyota now down to just one bullet in the gun we will jump back aboard the number 51 car though as Alessandra pure guidi is brought back onto the track and released once again onto the most on straight and as he gets back up to speed this massive wreck is going to bring out the safety card this will once again allow the 51 car to catch back up to the front of this hypercar field [Music] so despite having spun and beached this number 51 Ferrari as the race goes back to green Alessandra Pierre guidi is just a few hundred meters behind the overall lead and as they head into the first chicane Antonio Fuoco in the number 50 Ferrari is pressurizing Alex Lynn in the number two Cadillac which is in third place overall we can see that Van Wall which is a few laps down straight line but she came though is going to allow them all to slide past as they go down through the S's the next car up ahead of Alex Lynn is some more lap traffic though this is one of the glicken houses which is a few laps down and as they head up into Ted Cruz Alex Lynn looks up the inside of the glickin house but there's no room to pass there he gets held up slightly and that allows Antonio Fuoco to tuck up behind this Cadillac and get a great draft along this mohsan street as they head into the first chicane Antonio foco Pops to the inside of Alex Lin and that gives Alessandra peregrity a double draft behind here in this number 51 Ferrari he will close up before the breaking Zone attorney foco is going to break as late as possible up the inside we can see sparks flying from that Cadillac through the breaking zone of this first chicane but Antonio Fuoco is up into third place shuffles Alex Lynn in the Cadillac back into fourth and Alessandra Peregrine is going to try to get a great exit we see that Ferrari is held up behind the glicken house now flashing his lights that allows Alex Lin to get the better exit but that Cadillac just doesn't quite have the straight line speed to make it past the Ferrari and now pure greedy in the draft is going to pull up alongside Alex land almost gonna look for a move on his teammate as they head into the second chicane more sparks flying as a number 50 car crosses the crown of the road in the braking Zone that glicken house is just holding up these hyper cars behind but it has good straight line speed and it just can't find a way past it heading into most on Corner Antonio's going to look to the inside of this clicking house still flashing his lights trying to find a way past but the Glick and house does not yield and holds this number 50 Ferrari behind and as they head to the Porsche curves there is nowhere for Antonio Fuoco to go he is firmly stuck behind this glicken house and that's just allowing the 9x8 and the Toyota up front to extend the gap coming down to the s's Antonio Falco is still flashing his lights and the glickin house goes a little bit wide on the exit and that will compromise the run up to tetrouge and allows Fuoco to find his way up the inside of the glicken house who gets a worse exit because he had to run wide through tattoo Rouge and it's going to allow Alessandra peregrity to find his way past as well and a few laps later as they are once again heading down the most Sun straight into the first chicane Antonio Fuoco is going to look to pass another last car this time the 311 wheel and Engineering Cadillac Focus gonna break really late as the 311 car allows him to pass and he slides wide through the middle of the corner though that compromises his exit the 311 is actually gonna get a better run and close in as they come back onto the most on straight and Pierre greedy gets a beautiful draft off of both of these hyper cars up front [Music] Cadillac as Alessandra peregrity pulls to the right hand side of the road out of the draft of the Cadillac and looks to find a way around the outside of his teammate number 50 car who breaks really late once again into the second chicane again it's slightly too late he has to shortcut the chicane this time it's going to once again compromise his exit and Pierre greedy getting the better run on his teammate as they exit the second chicane and head into mohsan corner we can look aboard the number 50 car of Wilco and watch that number 51 Ferrari just pull a nose ahead heading down into mohsan corner [Music] with a clear Road up front Pierre greedy can now work to start closing the gap on the 9x8 in the Toyota with James collado back aboard number 51 we can see this 94 9x8 up the road and as he exits most on Corner James collado is going to start to get a very slight draft from that French book hyper car up front and as they head into fast Indy that Gap is just starting to close on the pojo [Music] slow Indie we can see how much more grip this 51 Ferrari has at low speed now into the slowest corner at our Notch James cloud is going to flash his lights at Nico Mueller letting him know that he is here and he needs business as they head down this little Street into the Porsche curbs this will give us a good chance to see the relative performance of this French built wingless hypercar compared to the Italian Ferrari the 9x8 breaks late into the Porsche curves and carries a lot of speed through the first Apex actually extending the Gap to James collado in the Ferrari behind that 9x8 really struggled in those low speed Corners coming into the Porsche curbs but now that we're going through the Porsche cribs look how it's extending the gap on this 499p o Mueller really makes all of his speed in the high speed corners and seems to lose all of it in the low speed corners but as they head into the second chicane we can see the rear of that number 94 car sliding around as Nika Mueller tries to put the power down coming back onto the most on straight James collado now closing in on this number 94 car as they head over the crest on the most on straight now firmly in the draft of this number 94 car he is closing the Gap and looks to the outside through most on corner but thinks better of it there Nico Mueller breaking as late as possible carrying a huge amount of speed through the Apex but he is late on the front on the exit as they get hard on the power James collado tucked up to the rear diffuser of that 9x8 looks to the inside but it's covered off by Nico Mueller who makes him go the long way around the outside we see traffic up in front of James collado but it changes Lanes goes in front of Nico Mueller and is going to cause a pick and allow James collado to easily get through into second place as he goes into fast Indy and then through slow Indie and chases after this number eight Toyota which we can now see ahead of us heading into Arnage [Music] throughout this entire race the Toyotas and Ferraris have been so evenly matched but it does just seem as though in these cooler temperatures the Ferrari just has a slight speed advantage over these Toyotas but as they head across the Front Street no matter what team you care about or which team you support this is what we endurance fans have been waiting for Ferrari versus Toyota two Titans of the sport battling out for the overall victory at night at Le Mans what more could you want [Music] and as they fly down the pitch black musan straight only illuminated by their headlights James collado just starts to slightly close in on Sebastian bleming who is now stuck behind the garage 56 NASCAR through the first chicane this is going to allow James clauder to close up and blemy's exit is compromised as well behind that NASCAR he's gonna peel to the outside and the NASCAR is going to have an awkward moment as colada went to follow blemmy through and the NASCAR went to follow buemi as well they nearly collided on this most on straight but when we is now weaving from side to side trying to break the draft of collado who flashes his lights to tell him he's not a fan of that blemmy pushing the car to its limit to the first element of chicane sliding the rears ever so slightly on the exit and uses all of the road pushing this Toyota to its absolute limit to keep James collado in the Ferrari behind as they head into the mohsan corner whammy breaks as late as he possibly can but collado is able to start to close the gap as they go through the Apex and into the exit collado now firmly getting the draft off of this Toyota but there's a gaggle of traffic up in front there's an lp200 GT and bohemmy goes off the road onto the shoulder kicking up dust to make his way past James colada was going to breathe out of the throttle not being as aggressive as whammy as they head into fast Indy that lmp2 car is going to just cut off James collado who now flashes his lights at the United Autosport lmp2 car flashing his lights once again blemmy now able to build a gap with this lmp2 traffic and James collado is gonna have to work to close in once again as they head into the Porsche curves and as they head through the s's these hyper car drivers have more GT traffic to contend with as James collado closes up on this 33 Corvette and Sebastian bohemy closes in on the iron Dames Porsche as it goes up the inside of both of these GT cars through Tech Rouge that Ferrari having to go wide to avoid making contact and James Plato is gonna have to lift out of the throttle to avoid hitting the back of that iron Dames Porsche Sebastian bohemi is taking massive risks in that Toyota trying everything he possibly can to stay ahead of James collado in this Ferrari into the breaking zone for the first chicane one more time it is deja vu all over again as Sebastian Bohemia is caught behind this NASCAR his exit is once again compromised as he has to pinch to the inside to get around this Camaro James colada was gonna pull over early to avoid any confusion with this NASCAR and bohemi once again is going to start weaving up front to break the draft of James collado and to do anything he can to stay ahead of this Ferrari [Music] because the head of the Porsche curbs James collado is going to look to close the gap on this Toyota because these two cars are at the end of their stint and both need a pit stop and the closer he can be to this Toyota the better chance they have at passing this number eight car in the pits James collado all over the curb the inside and uses all of the road on the outside through the exit of the Porsche curves and the number eight Toyota is going to dive into the pit Lane and so does this number 51 Ferrari they break as late as possible through this little chicane re-accelerate again and then slam on the brakes one more time as they hit the pit lane speed limiter and Sebastian blemmy pulls into his number eight Toyota's pit box James collado falling in short order in his 51 pick box as well this Pit Stop is gonna be fuel only for the number 51 car and as soon as that feeling is done they pull the nozzle James collado peels away and with the Toyota needing a fresh set of Michelin tires this is going to put the number 51 Ferrari back into the lead of the race but as this stint continues that number eight Toyota is pumping in fast laps behind this number 51 Ferrari and a Porsche GT car is sent wide through the s's James clawder tries to go around the outside but the Porsche just squeezes him and as they go through tetrus James collado is stuck behind this slow GTE car he finally gets hard on the power as they get on the most on straight but the damage has been done and if we look to the left of James collado we can see an additional pair of headlights Illuminating the road those headlights become a nose a front wheel and the number eight Toyota which takes over the overall lead once again from this number 51 Ferrari heading into the first chicane James collado is pushing this car as hard as he can to stay with that number eight Toyota but as the stint goes on that Toyota will just ever so slightly begin to pull away but as Knight turns into Dawn Antonio giovannazzi and Alessandra Pierre guidi continue to push this number 51 Ferrari to try to catch up to this number eight Toyota and as Dawn finally breaks we can look up the road and see Rio hirikawa in that number eight Toyota just ahead of this number 51 Ferrari these two endurance racing juggernauts pushing flat out for overall honors at the Le Mans 24 hours heading into mohsan Corner we can see that ryokurikawa who was once a little dot on the screen is now appearing larger and as he is stuck behind a GT car Alessandro Pierre greedy closes the Gap even further on this number eight Toyota the daylight now Illuminating the dirt and grime that has accumulated on these race cars after 16 hours of intense battling with Alessandra Pierre greedy now firmly in the draft of this Toyota as they head into the Porsche curbs this Gap continues to close through the Apex or the first corner kirikawa is wide and completely understeers Pierre greedy now closes the Gap dramatically through these high speed Corners that Toyota is hurting for grip as he goes through the final element of the Porsche curves and as these two cars prepare for a pit stop I'll admit that I buried the lead a little bit because that Toyota has suffered a bit of front end damage and lost some front end downforce which is why it was understeering so much to those Porsche curbs so as Rio hirikawa pulls into his pit box the Toyota crew will have to replace the nose of that number eight car and as Pierre greedy pulls into his pit box he will jump out and allow James collado to jump in to this number 51 Ferrari and with the driver change complete the door closed James collado will get a fresh set of tires and then peel away from the pits in this number 51 Ferrari to once again retake the overall lead after nearly 16 hours of battling with that issue for the number eight Toyota Ferrari is now firmly in the lead of this Centenary 24 Hours of Le Mans and that is the way this epic battle would end with zero minutes on the clock Alessandra Pierre guidi will filter through the four chicane one last time and
