[Music] foreign let's have a closer look at the new Ferrari 499p we already took a first look a couple of months ago when the Prototype was first spotted check the link below but now the car was officially revealed and there are lots of interesting features to talk about let's start with the background of the project why is where are we going to the mall again after 50 years and now competing in F1 and Lamar in recent years Ferrari was spending more than 400 million dollars per Formula One season and if you wanted to successfully compete in wec he would have needed the same budget so manufacturers either did F1 or wec but not both in 2021 a cost cap has been introduced to F1 with a maximum budget of 145 million dollars per year so suddenly Ferrari had to reduce the Formula One cost to almost one third of their normal spendings but not just Ferrari has that problem other teams deal with the same situation too so teams tried to reassign development work away from their F1 operations and created projects that were high technology like F1 but are officially not F1 like Red Bull started when you hypercar Project rb17 Check the link below and Ferrari decided to join the World Endurance Championship so experiences from these side projects could help their F1 business without being counted in the budget cap calculations on the other hand the Endurance Championship has become very attractive to manufacturers you can either compete with the lmdh Prototype and use lots of standardized Parts compete in North America and Lamar and all that for around 20 million dollar per year or you compete with the lmh Prototype which allows you to design the whole car yourself but for around 60 to 100 million dollar per year so compared to the Past still pretty cheap for Ferrari if you want to know more about the new hypercar regulations check out my other video below so instead of firing lots of Highly qualified stuff from the F1 department and canceling F1 development projects Ferrari decided to join wec with the lmh Prototype and could move people over to this project that on the other hand makes this project very interesting because we have one step is now facing a new challenge and a new set of rules let's start with the structure of the car Ferrari developed a completely new monocoque which has to be designed as a two-seater but if we compare it to the Porsche lnd H car which uses a standardized multimatic lmp2 monocoque the Ferrari's cockpit looks a bit slimmer also we can see here that the Porsche's front overhang is a bit longer Ferrari's driver sits on the left so they have enough space for driver changes on the left where the car is being refueled on the right in limo also villamon track is clockwise so the driver has better visibility in most corners only Audi's lmp1 cars had the driver on the right hand side in an attempt to have faster driver changes but then got in the way of a guy who was refueling the car underneath the front body work the Ferrari needs a bit more space because of its front electric motor with 200 kilowatt it's connected to a 900 volt battery and Ferrari can use the F1 experiences here behind the monocoque sets the three liter 120 degree V6 engine we know from the 296 GT3 for more info on this check the links below why 120 degree because the four-stroke engine needs two revolutions to complete all four strokes so 720 degree if we want an even firing order you divide that by the number of cylinders and get 120 degree for a six-cylinder engine for standard road cars that's not a very practical idea because the engine is too wide but for a mid-engine car it works front engine cars compensate the angle difference at the crankshaft but that's creating areas of smaller cross-section so weak points in the crank in the past the little space for the exhaust primaries underneath the engine was a problem but Ferrari turned the heads on this engine which then gives him enough space between the heads for primaries and two turbochargers so the larger Bank angle creates an engine with low center of gravity but also a wider engine but since this is a two-seater race car that's not a problem here interesting will be if Ferrari will use air-to-air intercoolers like on the road car here or water to air intercoolers like an F1 so it's great they can use the same engine like in the road car here which will help to develop it further on the road and on track but the problem with this engine is that it's not designed to be a stressed member the 296 is using a classic frame and the engine is sitting between the structure for a race car however it's a huge packaging Advantage if the engine is a stressed member because you don't need an additional rear subframe so the rear can be Slimmer which saves weight and allows for much better aerodynamics so Ferrari took the 296 engine and redesigned it to be a stressed member and before 99p behind the engine sits an extracts sequential 7-speed gearbox great about this drive trainers that because of the short engine there is no gearbox hanging behind the rear axle which in return allows to have a huge diffuser and now let's talk about aerodynamics the special thing about hypercar regulations is that they don't give you geometrical restrictions like in the past they check the result in the Wind Tunnel so they give you a performance window your car has to be in for example the aerodynamic efficiency so lift divided by drag shouldn't be higher than 4. if you have more downforce you have to add drag to your car maximum downforce is 5.2 minimum drag is one and that enables design departments to also have a go at these new hyper cars and add some draggy features like the Peugeot which is not using a rear wing more information below and also Ferrari's Styling Center was involved in the design of the 499p but since we know that F1 Engineers are involved in this we already knew we could expect some out of a box thinking here one feature that stands out are the little vertical fences we can see on the Ferrari the Porsche for example concentrated on a smooth design and avoid separations but the Ferrari works with lots of little Vortex generators and large deflectors behind the front wheels similar to F1 because these F1 aerodynamicists are very familiar with vortices and know how to use them to improve performance and here could be a little trick in the Ferrari's design if you designed a hypercar it will be tested by the FIA in zalba's F1 wind tunnel for European races and in Wind shears wind tunnel in North Carolina for the North American races drag and downforce numbers will be measured but as far as we know in a straight line low drag is important in a straight line but you want downforce in corners and this is where all the little vertical fences of the Ferrari come into play on the job these fences will block the flow from streaming to the site and create higher pressure on top of the Bodywork so that's additional downforce the fences on the doors will help to keep high pressure on the roof Inlet like the competitors do but for where we added two more fences on top of the roof scoop in a corner the outside one could create an in-washing Vortex that helps to keep the flow attached close to the car's Center Line and for vertical fences on the rear wing work the same way again as the ones at the front but increase the pressure on top of the wing under your so Ferrari could have found a way here to have downforce within the regulatory limits in a straight line in the Wind Tunnel when the car is being assessed but it creates more downforce once it's actually driving in a corner also the high front splitter with its curved shape tells us that this is a Ferrari it allows lots of air underneath the car and has a fat profile to avoid separations at the side it gets Slimmer and curls down to catch the in-washing sight Vortex that seals the front if we take a closer look we can see that we are using three elements at the front wing with a much lower sitting side flow behind it just like in F1 Ferrari's hybrid system is only located at the front with the electric motor on the front axle and the battery in the cockpit so the low temperature cooling cycle could be either completely separate in front and these air inlets and Outlets could be formed with front radiators or they do it like an F1 and combine the water intercoolers with the low temperature cooling Circuit of the hybrid system in that case these inlets could be for brake Cooling but I would usually expect Ferrari to use F1 style ducts on the inner side of the wheels we can see that the center fence is cut at one point to make space for the tall eye as located here so they can easily change the nose during a race we can also see the pitot tube for reference pressure in the center and the cockpit air inlets the front wheel cut outs are interesting too it looks like Ferrari intentionally designed for wheel arches too small and now uses replaceable covers with different shapes and gurneys to cover the wheels also a way to change the car's setup a complete contrast to the Porsche is with far forward reaching side point on the lower side we have a path for the lower rear and led switch could be for brake Cooling the rear section has some interesting features again first of all we can see the far forward reaching support cable which means the next solid piece is a lot further forward which helps to keep the mass moment of inertia around the z-axis low in other words the car could be more responsive because of the two turbo charges in the center before 99 has two exhaust pipes in this Center too they then have a two Element rear wing and another element below which holds the rear light it looks like a flat plate from the outside but changes to a wing profile towards the center and they use a gurney on this element underneath is the Bodywork separation lying with a granny 2 and a mid-sized cooling air outlet it looks like Ferrari is using some side expansion behind the rear wheels to have a smaller wake in the center that and also the compact drivetrain allows them to have a massive diffuser in the center the exhaust pipes are now blowing directly to the lower separation line with its Gurney that means that together with the wing above and the diffuser below they would be able to work where we are harder under Full Throttle when the exhaust gas is accelerating the flow in the center and that's another question for the FIA wind tunnel test duvet assess the cars with or without exhaust flow in the Wind Tunnel because if they don't the Ferrari could produce more downforce with exhaust gas on track the shark fin has an interesting shape that allows more flow to the rear wing under your in hypercar regulations teams can decide if they use a device at the front or one at the back to balance the car we can see that Ferrari is using the rear wing flap to do this and in these pictures the flap is in the middle position so they can adjust it steeper or flatter also we see here the three cutouts with in-washing profile and the rear wing and plate together with the larger side Gurnee flap Ferrari creates extra outwash and hence increases expansion behind the rear wing this increases the airspeed underneath the rear wing which results in more down Force so in terms of technology and aerodynamics with Ferrari 499p is an impressive vehicle the fact that they are using a modified streetcar engine will also help future street cars maybe we will see the fully stressed V6 engine in a broadcast soon Ferrari tries to keep the expectations low and they expect a difficult first year they admit that they're a bit late with this project compared to the competition they will compete in Sebring 2023 for the first time but only test the car since July 22. until now they could only cover 12 000 test kilometers where they are aiming for 30 000 kilometers so there's still a lot of work ahead Ferrari will only bring two cars which will be operated by their trusted partner AF courser and because they want to improve reliability first they are not offering cars for customers in the first year so what do you think about the new Ferrari 499p let me know in the comments below and see you at the next video
