the number one question I get from people about the Ford Lightning is how far can the truck actually go so today we're going to find out let's charge it to 100 take it out on the road drive it as far as we can and see what happens let's go [Music] charged up to 100 and you that it's telling us we have 242 miles of range on a full charge this is a standard range XLT which is the 98 kilowatt battery pack and according to Ford a full charge should be 230 miles of range in what's interesting is four months ago when I bought the truck I charged it to a hundred percent I had 236 miles of range so the range has eked up a little bit even though the truck's telling us we have 242 miles of range I can guarantee you we're not going to be able to get 242 miles of range out of this on a full charge but I think you'll be surprised at the end of the video to see exactly how far we can go before we take off let's talk charging when you buy a Ford Lightning it comes with this charger from the factory you can plug this into a standard 120 Outlet or 240 volt you do not want to use this charger unless it's an emergency I did a video I'll post it here where I plug this into the 120 volt charger to charge the truck and it took days like four days to charge it up which just doesn't work so this is an emergency only what I did is installed this Juice Box level 2 48 amp charger I did a lot of research on my own this is the one I ultimately picked not a paid sponsorship this is just the product I like the best I'll put a link in the description for this charger this charges it and um about 10 hours if it's totally empty however for day-to-day use I usually plug the truck in when I get home at the end of the day overnight it's more than enough to drive around um on a day-to-day basis so let's get started see how far we can go with the full charge so we just hit 50 percent battery range left which is also 110 miles and we started with 242 and we've gone 124.2 miles and we're averaging about 2.4 miles per kilowatt hour which is actually pretty good on the energy usage temperatures have been in the 70s and 80s during the winter when it was cold the truck was averaging about two miles or less per kilowatt hour oh that's a good example so there's the pre-collision assist warning um if you're coming up on someone without slowing down it starts to do that another option that I really like about this truck is the one pedal drive so what that does is it um it allows you to just take your foot off the gas and I'll do it right now so right now just let off the gas and it starts to slow down and it's using the regenerative braking which is giving you um energy back to the batteries it's really cool I like it it did take about a week to get used to that so if that's new to you there's a little bit of learning curve to just figure out what that slow down rate is but it's a really nice feature of the lightning so we've been driving along here and we just got the dreaded driving range low alert so this comes on when you um go below 50 miles of range left so as you can see we've got 49 miles of range 23 battery life and so far on our trip here we have gone 190 miles and the efficiency's actually gone up slightly we're now at 2.5 miles per kilowatt hour so we're going to keep going here run this down as far as we can without getting stuck and see if we can surpass the 230 miles of estimated range for the standard battery pack on the lightning so we're getting down to the end of our test here in this warning just started popping up Chargers unreachable the nearest Chargers outside of your range please plan on finding a power outlet where you can charge so I just stopped the truck I went as far as I felt comfortable without getting stuck and having access to a charger so I've got one percent battery left and three miles of estimated range this is the standard range XLT which is rated from Ford at 230 miles and if you remember at the beginning of the video when we charged it to 100 percent it gave us a range of 242 miles so the big question you've been waiting for how far did we actually go I think it can be as surprised as I was so here we go one percent battery left three miles of range and I went 245.6 miles with an average of 2.5 miles per kilowatt hour efficiency this is phenomenal the trucks rated at 230. I bet you could have eked out 250 if you drove it until it absolutely died this beats my expectations for this truck I was really excited with this test let me know what you guys think in the comments [Music] okay [Music]
