you love countermeasures and you love speeding and he's gonna need a lot of help being able to break this record [Applause] [Music] back in the mid-2000s and I think that I got a speeding ticket so I've decided well there are probably ways to mitigate that risk that goes back to my high school years and I've been a fanatic ever since I had a ton of radar guns xkk a band I've broken a couple of old x-band guns but I have K 55 and I have a couple old mph models I had one from the mid 70s and it was kind of like my grandmother's original microwave oven that had the little mixi tubes and it made some really weird sounds and it was just all this cheap seventies pot metal but it worked until I broke it I have a lot more modern stuff like mph k55 it does pop a stock or a TR Decatur Genesis probably Decatur Genesis too hard to keep up with as many radar guns as I have in my collection just one laser gun right now custom Pro laser - and it's about the nicest one that was ever made in terms of optical quality I actually met the inventor who's a local he was interviewing me for some completely unrelated job and I'd found that 20 or 30 years prior he'd invented this gun it was kind of fun being not as much of an expert as he was but no I'm way too much for what he was expecting somebody to know coming into an interview not having to do with radar laser or anything like that so I had mentioned about producing some countermeasures at one point when I was at Tech and I was still furious at cops I was introduced to edit a party this mutual friend said well you need you two need to be introduced because he's wanting to break this Cannonball Run record and you love countermeasures and you love speeding and he's gonna need a lot of help being able to break this record so we were introduced some time around 2007-2008 and we have been good friends ever since it had purchased this big white s-class which it was a big car lots of radar cross-section so you'd have a huge amount of reflection it could be easily tracked and traffic it's that one car that the radar guns not going to have any problem picking up same with the lasers big headlights big windshield and it's white so it's highly reflective and two of us kind of looked at it and we realized well we're gonna need a lot of help here so I started doing a little research on laser especially so I found a product it was a epilim product had some number at the end and it's something like three hundred dollars a gram probably more than some of your best decorator drugs and and it was completely opaque to this laser wavelength about 905 nanometers put it on the most reflective surfaces like a chrome bumper or license plate or headlights and normally they would be like mirrors and now they're like mirrors spray painted with a matte black finish it worked really well well I noticed about a week later that this dark green was not as dark and I'd purchased a clear coat that had the UV protection and it just didn't seem to make the difference so after about two weeks there I was the EPEL in was completely just destroyed and the laser was getting punched through with no problem and I just had to hang it up there because it was an expensive project and it was a total money pit and I couldn't see going any further with it without you know spending ten times as much the FCC controls sort of the jurisdiction of radar countermeasures the FDA controls laser countermeasures at least at the federal level so with laser countermeasures you have a whole lot less to go up against because what does the FDA really want to do with people speeding on the other hand the FCC is sometimes a tyrannical organization and they will go out and just try to you know get you first off there were some ideas some very very good ideas and it they could have been realized but I just can't say that they were realized he was running three radar detectors it was running two independent laser jammers or parking sensors which at least at that time were completely legal it also mentioned needing to be able to control traffic lights and strangely enough I had toyed around with that concept several months prior I had purchased this infrared illuminator at Fry's and so I made a little just a little breadboard circuit the microcontroller and a button and a couple of transistors took it down Peachtree one night went traffic light after traffic light and it was doing nothing and then we finally made it up to another traffic light traffic in the other direction went and then their lights turned yellow and then they turned red and I pushed it again and their lights turn green again and I was apparently triggering the sensor for the other direction back in the 90s there had been some pretty successful jammers like the arc interceptor which worked against old analog X and K ban guns they ended up with X K and K a for a new product called the scorpion so it was the scorpion ultimate so the regular old scorpion you'd get X and K and a lousy design that wasn't anything as nice as it had been the product and the 90s that was actually I think sold by a sharper image or somebody until they were cracked down on because it was a working jammer there was a guy on the internet just this totally eccentric guy and he went by scammed by scorpion as user name on radar detector forum he drove all the way down from North Carolina to Atlanta wanting to test his guns so he found a spot to test it and there was one gun and it was a custom Falcon old 1980s 1990s analog k-band gun jammed it every single time the other ones sometimes you would get nothing is a Noah factor you would get a bad reading like we were doing 25 miles an hour in this long parking lot and it might have been reading 50 or 70 miles an hour which is not a particularly good thing Richard Rawlings is free to believe whatever he wants to believe that product was a hunk of junk I have a spectrum analyzer plot oscilloscope plot and radar data to prove it idea for Ed's 2013 Ron was ok we'll give it a try but it's still kind of a dry run if we don't get it we don't get it but let's go ahead and try to get everything as setup as possible a few weeks before had left we set for hours and it was a unit and bearcat scanner we've got the unit and software went online got a bunch of frequencies you're going through about a dozen states and each state you have at least 10 counties that you go through so we ended up sitting there for hours programming in probably a few thousand frequencies it was one of the most grueling experiences that I have had in my life it was like a week of final exams at Georgia Tech you cramp for it you hate doing it you never want to use it again it's just total complete and utter busy work but we had to do it so it had a bunch of gps's setup he had a windshield units GPS tracker from a third party and all of that data was enough it would have been very hard to afford anything like that and nobody before him had even come up with that much data it's this whole concept of going really quickly in a car for ridiculous amounts of time that has really brought us all
