How Do You Make Transparent Glass In Blender Eevee And Cycles ?

[Music] hello in this lecture we'll learn how to make glass material and blender with ev and cycles render engines we have a cup and plate 3d model we want to make glass material for it first of all let's make glass shader with cycles render engine make sure that your render engine set to the cycles let's go to the shading menu and select the cup let's click on the new button and add new material firstly let's set the transmission value to 1 to make transparent material then let's set the roughness value to zero as you can see it will make our surface smooth and reflective if we increase this value our surface will become rougher it will be just like frosted glass finally let's set the base color value to white exactly because white color reflects all colors but black colors absorbs all colors [Music] however if you want to make colored glass you can set the base color value as you want there we go we have glass material now [Music] let's rename this material as glass now let's select the plate and assign the same material for it [Music] [Music] let's switch to render preview mode as you can see we need scene lights to get render we can add light but i want to add hdri image instead of the scene lights hdri images can be used for lightening of a 3d scene you can find and download hdri images for free on the web now let's switch to world mode in shading editor press shift a and add environment texture connect the color node to other color node as you can see the background looks pink color it means we need an image let's open new image file i will add a hdri image i downloaded before there we go we got great result with cycles render engine because the cycle's render engine computes all reflections and refractions for us [Music] let's switch to ev render engine as you can see we cannot get realistic result as cycles render engine to get better result with ev we need to make some settings first of all let's enable screen space reflections expand the menu and also enable refraction [Music] then let's go to material properties menu and scroll down to settings and enable screen space refractions we cannot see through the glass so we need to add a transparent shader to glass material let's go to shader editor window and press shift a to add transparent shader now we have two different shaders and we need to mix them let's press shift a again and add a mix shader connect the shaders nodes to mix shader and connect the mix shader to material output as you can see it still doesn't work when we slide the factor value because blend mode is opaque we need to switch it to alpha hashed there we go we have added transparency information to our glass material now we can slide the factor value and determine how much transparent or glass will be the material also we can control which part of the cup will be transparent to do this we need to add fresnel node press shift a input and select the frame l let's connect the factor node to the mix shader factor node as you can see the edges of the cup will be pure glass and center of the cup will be more transparent fresnel node works just like thickness of the glass it means fresnel node computes how much light is reflected off a layer where the rest will be refracted through the layer ior is index of refraction it determines how much the light ray changes direction at one rays pass straight through like transparent higher values give more refraction let's set the ior value to 0.9 as you can see transparent part of the cup is too transparent we want to decrease the transparency so let's add a math node press shift a again converter and math node [Music] let's switch to multiply function set the value as 95 enable the clamp option there we go we have more realistic glass shader with eevee render engine thanks for watching see you in the next tutorial
