[Music] it's an ancient church 3:05 London Heathrow gateway to the world Heathrow is a huge melting pot is one of the biggest hubs in the world flying to 194 destinations in 82 countries Singapore which class so the front the size of a small city its Europe's busiest airport expecting four to five thousand passengers there's best of one half hour as Heathrow gets ready to build its third runway this year is set to be the airport's busiest with more than 76 million passengers meaning to stay on schedule a plane has to take off or land every 45 seconds with this all the time it's relentless trouble trouble operating at full capacity there's no room for error disgrace even the smallest problem can cause chaos and cost the airport and Airlines millions of pounds in fines and lost revenue every minute every second here is money but working against the clock there's an army of stars we're gonna try our best to get you there from plumbers starting to get their little smell of sewage now two pilots they're just such pretty shape and specially trained police until we've left the plane you cannot leave the playing yourselves all battling to keep Britain's busiest airport fly [Music] there we go one two three four five six the six on drugs no four nine left in language nearly half a million planes flight in and out of Heathrow every year and numbers are rising and then which I can get departures in between as well and I think it's 6:00 a.m. primetime for long-haul arrivals from the Far East and us more flights will land now than any other time of the day spirit three four good morning remain 0 9 8 6 wind 1 0 0 6 months due to overnight noise restrictions most planes have had to wait until now to learn tea Pakistan 562 air traffic controller Gavin must now land one flight every 80 seconds to ensure he throws day starts on time at 602 you can have anything up to 35 to 40 aircraft in the air waiting to come in to land 6 knots number two we are alternating runways were London one on the left one on the right and we're doing that for an hour spirit 7 8 follow the green standard 3 351 check our agenda and 7:00 a.m. Gavin's already landed 43 planes and that's just the beginning of what promises to be another very busy day [Music] while the plane stuck up in the sky air traffic control also have to deal with all movements on the runway including engineering vehicles I don't know where pilots is still the one up there how am I supposed to that you should be telling me today air side engineer mo is teaching that princess mat how to check the runway arrival lights the pilots use the guide planes in same thing be on the left hand side pilots did something like that oh yeah I was watching her let's solo the policies and the lip steaks that are playing I'm never really working on the runway or that close to it I've always been kind of around in the surrounding areas doing jobs there I'm looking forward to seeing ways that she'd like to be that closer to get to the lights engineers Matt and myomas first across the live runway and there's no let-up in the oncoming traffic [Music] knowing that actually gonna go across the live runway that you could actually be enough planes flight path is kind of a big deal ready hit with six flights on approach and planes landing at speeds at 180 miles per hour the crossing must be expertly timed by air traffic control Matt and Mao are being escorted by specially trained air side safety drivers so basically he's given up a permission after Drupal 7 we can go Cara go freeze here are go go go [Music] punch it Bert punch it there's less than 90 seconds until the next plane lands he's obviously giving us at that time slot between during that plane and the next plane line lagna to its amazing cross here there are four arrival lights at the left of each runway they must be set to their own unique angle to safely guide in landing planes so you see that now that that's in the middle okay so you know that's bang 12.25 yeah precision is vital one wrong angle and a plane could crash land bringing Heathrow to a standstill 2.45 yeah so that's 2x - yeah so you go down to two points [Applause] I didn't realize you can actually get this close to do work it's quite strange a pineal and why next year what you didn't work yeah obvious guess the next one was the plank that fits Hillary yeah - yeah we're hopefully close I'll win would you hear that next they need to drive a mile south to check the lights but the take-off runway planes here trouble even faster after 200 miles per hour that's a large plane it's only a baby playful [Music] approaching is one of the world's largest aircraft the 747 weighs around 380 thousand kilos its wingspan is the width of a football pitch and any moment now there'll be just seven meters from it [Music] [Music] thanks to the job [Music] well airline Air China again Taiwan we don't have Taiwan here stop which airline you're flying which way learn you flying wish airline new sign you're in the wrong terminal bit Taiwan nearly one and a half million people passed through Heathrow every week there's an intermission there you can use to check him then just come back to his own name in Terminal two passenger experience manager soon is responsible for keeping the halls of passengers moving smoothly to avoid them missing their flight so can you write down please sue might have 23 years experience but every day brings a new challenge today she's been called to deal with a disruptive passenger often it's just that they've raised their voice they're not really aggressive but you do have to hurry just in case that they are some do become a little bit difficult she calling you because he's not listening whatever everybody's saying I am kidding them and yep going to invite my channel is studying yeah I came from path after London London from London to Dublin I have a ticket I have to get fortunately this passenger isn't aggressive but he is struggling he's arrived from Doha and needs to connect to Dublin but his connection is booked out of Gatwick 38 miles away London and Dublin oh okay you guys alright it's a different very poor sir sometimes you get passengers and you can explain it to them a million times and they just don't understand London EE no yeah no listen London Gatwick London Heathrow Doherty London Heathrow London Gatwick unfortunately what the lady said is correct you'll have to purchase your tickets and then speak to your travel agents when you get back there's a good government why did you make all of you feel me the next fry from Heathrow to Dublin leaves in under an hour so is desperate to get him sorted so the ticket desk can deal with other passengers to double it because you're going oh my very bit I don't know pound is too much for me well then there's no choice I love her very very poor country you got in this country like you the guide for this flight now closes in 40 minutes in the one your Parliament what sir are you already paid no yeah you have no choice you rather need to buy a ticket and catch the flights or you need to sit down and consider what your next alternative is I was being dumb I read you're paying the money yeah okay let's buy the ticket let's buy the ticket you're good for nothing have you got it when you take what seven more pounds yeah no no right you give me yes because that is the only way you'll go very life have you told him it isn't common for me to use my own money to pay complete strangers flights no that isn't the case just came to the Irish state it's better that we've got him on his flight to his son rather than him be here maybe for days on end thank you very much that was the reason my game is ten pounds you saved my world later on keeping Heathrow safe is a 24/7 job to police it the airport has 300 dedicated officers and its own police station where today training is taking place for coppers who are new at the airport they see Gary Lancaster is leading this session I've been a policeman now for almost 20 years and in the opportunity to join the airport came up I just saw it as a really exciting opportunity new boy steve is just transferred from diplomatic protection our light planes I love planes I could probably sit and watch the planes all day at the risk of people taking the mickey out of me but um yeah I just think it's great how big lumps of metal can take off in this guy all new coppers at Heathrow need to learn how to make an arrest in the restricted confines of a plane it sounds easy enough without using any strikes just try and pull my arms away from my body into a position where you get your outside wrist lock on okay let's go stop resisting like chance [Music] let's stop resisting okay how much ever is that what is working against you is the chair and your position so we can look at some techniques to make it a lot easier for ourselves the reason we're doing a training for these three days is because the airport's massively different it's not like working in the center of London we're gonna have to take you off the plane my friend okay getting off the plane get off the phone from customer service why why is that yeah I've just been treated like rubbish in fact I'm not even gonna speak so I'm gonna sit here for hours to see other moment you're under arrest for disruption here right grab there's nothing wrong get your arm out so we can see it put your arm out looking forward to my first shift a lot yeah so you got seatbelts on no taking off already bad thing I'm most nervous about he's mucking up don't want to muck up okay and then we could move Jesse off the plane I might come crashing down in there players of glory with absolutely nothing happening whatsoever or it could be the busiest day ever aircraft behind rumors just start an engine the sound hopefully the because of attacks in the cabinets there are over 10 different models of passenger planes at Heathrow from the massive double-decker a380 with up to 600 seats to the smaller a320 carrying just a hundred and fifty each one relies on the airport's network from engineering to air traffic control to keep them flying what time do you need to be able bite they don't think that's gonna work that unfortunately yet that is not yet time seed today senior first officer Dave sprout is on a special mission to collect the newest addition to British Airways fleet at Heathrow he's on his way to the Boeing factory in Seattle to collect a brand new 787 dreamliner worth a cool 200 million pounds an innovative model that it's thought will change the face of air travel it's almost like watching the birth of a child really and even many years later sometimes I've got in airplanes that I've delivered and it really does give me a bit of a thrill to say yeah I was like we brought this back but before Dave gets to fly his new plane he's got nine hours as a passenger sneakingly I sort of probably wish um flies the plane rather than the set back here [Applause] major emergencies are few and far between a patron but the airport's 100 firefighters are always on cool [Music] / - and fire ground surrounded by fuel batteries and electrics aviation fires require quick response times just three minutes today's watcher on their weekly drill and firefighters grant and Terry are taking the lead aviation fuel phones you mentioned twice the calorific value of petrol so we have to be prepared for very hot CRS he throws specially adapted fire engines hold 11,000 litres of water six times more than standard fire engines in charge is Airport fire manager Carrie I'll rig he's a 747 front with an old dc-10 back we have to train on the size of aircraft that come into this Airport some aircraft can carry up to 300 thousand litres of fuel and Heathrow must be ready to deal with the worst-case scenario [Music] these powerful cannons dispense up to 6,000 liters a minute so here they are using their turrets to pry out the fuselage and the engine fire one of the front one of the back and another vehicle the other side protects in the other side of the aircraft they use a little bit phone here as well once the blaze is under control on the outside the firefighters head in to rescue trapped passengers the team have only 90 seconds to complete an evacuation of up to 600 passengers he throws last major incident was four years ago when a short-circuit caused a fire on the plane Jolly Green Giant 15 plus years old so he's looking a bit burnt so in the next five years we've got to renew the rig and I've got a look to procure a new one not cheap about fifteen million quid on the perimeter road Steve's on his way to terminal 2 on his first shift as a police officer at Heathrow major loss Airport I fancy change your language yeah semi plain geek I'm paired up with a guy called Michael who's very experienced from that he's gonna show me the ropes I have no idea what to expect today it's just a case of finding that what comes my way really and taking it from now we're going through and inbound flights there's a lady on board who's been circulating on the national computer is wanted for assault it's alleged that she's had a road rage incident and she's punched somebody in the face and in the body and plans to go find her on board the aircraft and bring her back to the police station any passenger on an inbound flight to Heathrow who is wanted in connection with a crime is immediately flagged to police today suspect is a British national returning from holiday in Turkey again it's a brand new experience this suppose it'd be almost like when I first joined the police and then when we got my first shoplifter from the shop [Music] this says it's landed if only doing ten knots just waiting for the aircraft of the moment should be here in a couple of minutes once it arrives in the gate will speak to the crew go on board and hopefully find the person that we're looking for 20 night buddy there's only one way off the plane it's only a matter of time until Steve puts his training to the test to my experience of being on a plane as soon as it stops everyone's out a seat fingers crossed they made an announcement beforehand for once they see last year at Heathrow police made two thousand arrests across the airport pcs Steve pathos and Mike Perfetti are about to make another they've received Intel that a British national on board this flight is currently wanted for assault [Music] ladies and gents colossi to return to seats please will be on and off as quick as we can but we can't do it until you return two seats and you won't be our get off the plane until we're off if you can return to your seats please be very very grateful thank you very much thank you thank you very much [Music] Thank You first night now could you grab your bags for us and come join us at the front of the plane you would explain it all when we got off the plane there's no point doing amongst all these people thank you very much for cooperation welcome to London if you got your passports most pizza thank you you have any idea while we're here okay no worse basically you've been circulated as one is on our national computer for assault thank you remember any sort of altercation in my bed with anybody the passenger is suspected of assaulting someone during a road rage incident in the UK what's gonna happen because the allegation has been made against you and Ashly weird to be bound to investigate here at this stage you're under arrest on suspicion of ABH do not to say anything we may homie defense with the momentum question so Mitchell over line at all via do so no commitments reason for your arrest is for a prompt and effective investigation of the offense the suspect is taken to Heathrow's police station she was later charged with assault and found guilty at trial I first finished I know someone for plane was alright actually it was a it was a bit easier therefore he wasn't a bit more difficult and I was expected if that makes sense just have a safe running about five minutes away okay mind your head is you getting it my first it's been great it makes me look forward to doing the next one [Music] [Music] you couldn't ask for a nicer day to go and pick up a new airplane four and a half thousand miles away Dave's arrived at the Boeing Factory in Seattle [Music] and here she is here she is they're just such pretty machines such a nice airplane the new ultra high-tech plane has taken four months and around two and a half million components to construct and a lot of it is revolutionary up until now every aircraft has been made pretty much of aluminium this aeroplane is made of carbon fiber effectively the same thing they make a Formula One race of tar out of carbon fiber is really light this airplane is tens of tons lighter than it would be if it was made of metal 56 tons lighter than a 747 means that it's 25% more fuel-efficient and therefore better for the environment and cheaper to fly they're really expensive assets when they set on the ground they're certainly not taking our customers anywhere so actually is really important for us to get on and get going and take the aircraft back to Heathrow where she'll live for the rest of her life in a few hours an engineering team in London will prep the 787 for its first passengers [Music] back at Heathrow the City of London's animal reception center stands as the first line of defense against diseases imported from abroad offering protection from bird flu to fowl pests to rabies think about working here is you're always prepared for the unexpected in 2016 the airport's animal health officers processed 16,000 dogs and cats and 200,000 reptiles unless thoroughly checked they could carry the risk of disease whatever is arrived you just kind of deal with it today Animal Health Officer Vicki must check two dogs for rabies inoculations their owner Kailyn has just moved to Britain from the state's five to Foggs one is ten and her name is Fergie Duchess of a Vegas Fergie's white portney she's a portly pug and the other one is princess Lily Elizabeth the second all dogs entering the UK must have had a course of rabies vaccinations or faced quarantine what it is with a three year dog vaccinations the whole history yeah a one-year vaccinations done beforehand so that's what he's finding out and the other thing was there's no microchip number on the supporting document so therefore we can't verify that that is specifically the rabies cricket for Farragut Britain has been rabies free for ninety five years if the pugs paperwork can't be verified they'll have to go into quarantine for three weeks they have said that we're missing a trail of rabies shots essentially I'm missing paperwork I used to pet moving company so I was a shirt that it would be a virtual handover I paid embarrassingly enough probably five thousand pounds to ship to Docs I'm gutted I miss him I want to see him I'm anxious because I can't help the girls and they've been caged now probably traveling between 12 and 16 hours with no sign of the vaccination paperwork there are growing concerns for the health of diabetic Park Fergie so just kind of check up on froggy as we know now she's of diabetic so just want to make sure that she's okay okay I'm anxious Fergie hasn't had her medicine now for probably close to 10 12 hours takes medicine twice a day so she's new to medicine with the dogs in limbo Fergie needs a bets attention fast the older one forgets diabetic I just wonder if any we just double check on Fergie if that's okay [Music] I'm not black and white anymore you know I've got you know I've got quite a bit of pink and fluffy about me but that only comes out if it's required if it's not I just tell them [Music] back in terminal 2 veteran staff member sue is busy keeping the terminal as 45,000 daily passengers flowing ahead hello how are you I've heard I've heard okay this passenger missed her flight to Zurich yesterday because she was unwell and wants to rebook but the airline is refusing to accept her rather excessive hand luggage it Sue's job to find a solution all these bags it's a huge amount of weight it was just one of the few grams they threw so no no this is a fee that I can put know this is a huge amounts away these these are a huge amount of weight so you'll add five kilos hand luggage or possibly ten and I explained better I'm allowed one piece of hand blood yes plus the lady's bag or whatever that's what I use every day is my respect and I've been working with it were more than one or two years but they exactly the same way I'm used to work I'm allowed to my understanding to books and instead of two books I decided to take a lot of documents of right this may be the case that you use this as a hand luggage this may be the case but just come with me for a second just come with me with space on board at a premium this airline allows one bag of up to eight kilos plus a lady's handbag which can't be bigger than 40 centimeters by 30 by 10 it's 13 kilos it's the first time I've been called to a handbag that weighs over ten kilos and Porcia those other huge bags as well I understand by point of view that it is heavy right and I acknowledge imaginable stuff but I also have my full of view which I would like you to understand Swimming's handbag it is not stated it is it was right okay I'm not gonna of you but I'm telling you that it is right approach said this is my hassle no but actually might imagine let me finish with every matter Miller finished sweating he's written finish with so unable to resolve the situation it looks like the passenger won't be flying today they are creating all this problem now and they started to create a problem about this bag they were trying to find any excuse so it's not to take you forward she properly had a total of something like 30 or 40 kilos to take into the cabin and that was unacceptable [Music] back at the animal reception center it's not looking good for Kalin's parks so I'm just a bit concerned over station she needs her insulin you know it's just a she'll need to be referred again sort of for the evening so we'll need to give her the insulin Animal Health Officer Vicky can't release the dogs without confirmation of their rabies jabs if she doesn't get that there's no option they'll have to go into quarantine in my head just played out that we would have been home by now the paperwork would have been seamless if we would have shared some kisses we would have gotten in the car gone home I would have given her her shot probably more 45 minutes ago I'm in distress the long wait on paperwork now Maine's diabetic pug Fergie hasn't had injured in for 12 hours vets emma has been called in I'm gonna see if we get a blood test of a pose with the view that if it's high we can give her an injection of insulin first mini mall's so that's really high should be 5 to 12 and she's really 13 so it's verified means we can give us something to she said good you let you go back with your friend yeah after five hours of waiting there's finally news on the rabies vaccination paperwork but it's not what Caitlin wants to hear so there was a gap in paperwork for both girls so even though they've always had a course of vaccines bonobos there was a gap at one point in time which then apparently eliminates the fact they've ever been vaccinated so they need to go into quarantine for 21 days so so go to plan it's really difficult as not much you can say so really cancel them kind of got to just understand that this is their family a lot of the time they love them so much you can understand their frustration especially when they've paid for a service and the dogs go into quarantine spirit three four good morning Romy's here and I left clear to land surface wind zero zero six months today senior first officer Dave is flying a very special new arrival to Heathrow nine one five eight after a nine-hour flight the brand new 787 is touching down for the very first time what 111 paper nine one five nine if you follow the Greens understand three four zero who are now can overlook at the engine on this aircraft for Heathrow based engineers Derek and seunggi the pressures on to get the 787 ready for its maintenance oil it's quite unique to the 787 is a very quiet engine and as you can see from the sculpted code on the back there that's all to reduce the noise footprint of the engine the plane is 60% quieter than the 747 every plane needs an engine run to check its oil levels before takeoff after every flight it normally needs 1 or 2 litres extra [Music] but there's nothing in the way there's no foreign object let's get to me the clock is ticking every minute it's on the ground it's not carrying passengers and earning its keep [Music] so somebody's going to start these engines now we just look at the temperatures and pressure so we're looking for oil pressure or temperature and we've got good pressure for looking good there are now only two hours until departure they have that new aircraft smell just like a new car and everything's brand new and shiny and it looks immaculate over 200 passengers will be on board okay my checks are all finished the plane is ready to go customers are boarding and should be going on time with the last checks done the new plane can fly its first passengers the six thousand miles to Tokyo [Music] as you can see the terminal is quite and write down now everything is fine and it's looking for you see form in terminal 2 long suffering passenger experience manager sue has been keeping everyone moving for the past eight hours as the evening draws in she's now on the lookout for passengers stuck at the airport overnight where have you come from and you missed the flight because of fog it was no there was no train from where okay right okay so calm yourself down she obviously had a flight to Belfast and perhaps the connection was quite tight and anyhow she's missed the flight and now she's distressed first of all wait till tomorrow morning to get honest the fly and and that is it really I'm not quite sure what else to say now this passenger faces a long night at Heathrow so what is the point in getting yourself you've been all around the world all around the POW and getting yourself like this there aren't any planes tonight now so you know there isn't any so you've got all your things here that you can sell yourself down you want to bring your mum use my phone ringing right so you can ring your mum and say mum mum just is laid you know what time the flights are tomorrow 9:15 nine five votes 9:50 in the morning the trades terminal 2 was delayed by 10 minutes there's a security thing it's time for some straight talking from soon there is no reason to be this stressed out my fault I'm sure I don't understand why you're working yourself into such a state we click on home earlier it was that bad well there we go there so you're making yourself into a terrible state making yourself feel because you spend in one night you throw I don't understand the logic you've missed the flight that's all you've done is mr. five and here you are acting like what did you say you was acting like what would you say absolutely exactly most of the time I would say that the passengers just want to be heard but sometimes you do have to adapt to kind of been a bit motherly you know and pacified them and kind of it there there don't worry you know if it's gonna be all Ryan you know he's a bag of sweets kind of thing with her flight rebooked and a hotel room for the night it's another happy passenger for soon yes so now she's on the way home which is a lovely into my shoe but I can go home now and know that she's happy safe warm in the bandages [Music] [Music] the way we go I want to kick they come every time right the wish Bobby audience is gonna take off they could retire I don't know what Bertrand you see him coming it's a late takeoff in it as a very low second it's midnight and he throws last flight is departed but the day is not over for engineer Moe and apprentice Matt it can be interesting to be working from the night obviously the runways are inactive so you're doing jobs on the natural runways and it's just it's like a different world when you don't know March if compared to a day shift tonight Moe and Matt are carrying out essential maintenance checks on the lights that line the center of the runways why is it so important that we do this whole job so it is important so imagine like it was foggy their planes landing and they can't see the runway because the lights to dim yeah so they put the brilliancy up they can all land safely right we basically check that those brilliant T's are our correct levels right clear yeah let's do this go oh wait I've got a handbrake on a safety first for the handbrake down right gotta go start up the Senate life the LED lights are almost twice as bright as a normal household bulb a sensor trailer at the back of the vehicle checks their brilliance yeah literally I fancy anything just try to follow the straight line for the data to be accurate Moe must drive directly over the lights every time it beeps it's hitting a light Matt's tablet shows if Moe is in the correct position or if he's veering off to the side mostly white you just tell me yeah yeah yeah I left yeah see it's just a bit surreal to be honest just three hours ago there was planes taking off landing literally every 30 seconds to a minute and then all of a sudden peace just dead silent like that it's it's strange the lights of what are in your face that's what you can see but in the surrounding area is pitch black [Music] yeah so when it starts saying red white you know we're coming to the end of the runway if we were playing we should have taken off by now but check the distance and tell me how long I've got left you've depth 200 meters with ya just keep carrying it down for me and then I know when to stop 150-day 520 yeah okay driving quality moderate and lamps okay yeah so of inquiries anymore but ya know I was doing I was proving to you that like if you go left or right I'm gonna stop calling you moderate mo tonight is Matt's last shift with air side engineering before he moves on to his next seconded in terminal 2 I'm sad to go but as an apprentice you have to experience everything the airport are you gonna miss me Matt I'm gonna miss you your moderate mode will come to the end all right thanks stop to say oh your God have my hours were driving you get moderate again and I about get better going good that's it especially can get you got graded too good Momo good [Music] [Music] Oh [Music] next time a hunt for explosives the threat to UK mainland is deemed too severe there's a suspicious whiff underground we had smell-o-vision if we appreciate the rather lovely aroma of excrement and there's trouble at chicken it's busy it's a full flight I mean you can see the queue they're all business class yeah [Music]
