How are gemstones cut faceting a 30ct Brazilian amethyst

[Music] hi I'm Andrew Stewart from Stewart chimps today I'm gonna be cuttin this beautiful Brazilian amethyst this Brazilian amethyst is a pinkish purple color I'm gonna facet it in a Portuguese style cut the Portuguese style cut is designed to maximize the color of the stone they make it appear more deeper in color but yet give it good brilliance also it weighs just over 91 carats I will be faceting it in this round Portuguese design with 145 facets [Music] I start by supergluing he brass top to the rough gemstone her reinforced the super blue wood epoxy once the epoxy is fully cured the DAP is placed into the coil of the faceting machine I start cutting on a two hundred and sixty grit flap [Music] water is used to cool and lubricate the gemstone while cutting [Music] [Music] after the first role of pavilion facets the girdle facets are cut this will complete the outline of the gemstone now I change to a 600 grit lap this will remove the heavy scratches left by the 260 grid line [Music] [Music] with the scratches removed I move on to cutting the rest of the pavilion facets with the 600 grit lap there are four rows of pavilion facets in this design the cuffing of the pavilion is now complete the next step of the process is to pre polish all the pavilion facets [Music] [Music] pree polishing is done on a zinc alloy lap with 3000 grit diamond powder [Music] the last stage is polishing this is done with cerium oxide on a composite lap here you can clearly difference between a polished and a pre polished facet the pavilion of the gem is now complete and the gem is transferred to a new dock using a transfer jig the old doctor is removed by gently heating it with a butane torch with the Jen successfully transferred to the new dot the durable facets are polished [Music] [Music] now it's time to cut the crown facets the same process is used to cut the crown facets as the pavilion facets [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the last facet to be caught is the table facet it is the largest facet and is cut using a 45-degree table adapter this completes all the cutting stages of the gem the final step is to polish the crown the finished gem is removed from the drop by soaking it in acetone overnight so here we are all finished what a lovely stone it's turned out to be and at over 30 carats I'm pretty pleased with that result [Music] [Music] thanks for watching and see you next time
