This is a fun reminder of just how different Big Fish was. Notice it’s probably the least used movies in the clips besides Big Eyes (only saw one shot). Also, Big Fish was his last truly great movies. There are good movies in there (Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, and Sweeney Todd were solid), but everything else was either boring or actively bad. I’m hoping Dumbo is a return to form.
Commentary from the guys
This one's a cool, listen cause they have this little mini-discussion about Burton and his influences.
Even if somebody doesn't really like any of his films, I think they should look deeper if they don't see a sharp decline in quality regardless, as time goes on. I do get annoyed when all his movies are lumped together. The clichés apparent in his filmography weren't clichés at the start and the same goes for any director whose work becomes formulaic.
Besides, the jokes about Burton, even if he arguably deserves them based on his recent output, are just about as tired as the ingredients in his movies. We get it, he casts the same exact people much of the time.
Here is my take on Tim. A quick google showed his first child was born in 2003. I suspected it would be around this timeframe because after Sweeney Todd his work was more sanitized (so his kids could watch). Additionally, sanitized and mainstream works lead to bigger paychecks for his family. He also might not be in the same mindset now then he was back then. He just doesn’t know how to break out of his tropes, but he doesn’t know how to properly use them anymore.
Tim Burton is just an artist who lost his inspiration and creativity. There is no denying that Tim Burton is a legend. His 80's through early 2000's run was very good and gave us some one of a kind pictures. It's a bummer that he has become a cliché because he used to be one of my absolute favorites growing up.
Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Sissorhands, Ed Wood and Big Fish are perfect IMO.
He’s made a bunch of bad, sloppy films, but when Tim Burton is good, there’s no one else like him. Sweeney Todd and Edward Scissorhands are excellent.
This was just one extended ad for Dumbo .... I feel tricked
