[Music] folks i hope you enjoy this video it's about the wood mizer lx25 not a big one for being on camera so just sit back and relax enjoy this shaky camera work of an amateur sawyer [Music] well good morning folks today we're going to be doing an honest review my opinion after one year of using wood miser lx25 it's april it's 2021 i've had this mill about one year i ordered it the morning after i saw the email from wood mizer i've been thinking about a mill for quite a while i had never milled before probably like many of you watching this video and i had decided that i had a certain budget but also certain capabilities i wanted to have and when wood mizer released this particular model i got excited called the 9am the next morning and made my purchase this video is really for two people one considering a wood miser lx25 and two those that have never milled before and are did take me a little bit two hours a day for seven days to build this mill friends and family in close circle this is what to expect if you're an amateur sawyer it should be noted this is the entry level okay this is not i'm an experienced sawyer this is not i'm going to do production and make a living with this i think that would be tough however it is in my opinion a great mill a great way to get started and a ton of fun let's talk about some of the finer points so today on the mill we have about an 18 inch pine log now this mill is excellent at this type of work i want to talk about a few things that wood miser sends you first of all they send you these log stops now this is the shorter pair they're going to send you two pairs this is the short pair i find i use the long pair a lot more by the time this short pair which only stands about one foot tall sits in there in that uh in that bracket okay it's not holding up much of a lock so you really gotta want something out of that log for it to count now as you're looking here at my rails you're gonna notice the tops of the rails are pretty much worn out and paintless this is something i've noticed on several parts of the mill not just the top of the rails the paint job in my opinion not that tough and hasn't held up really well i'll show you some other areas on the top of the post that's not really a wear spot and yet the paint she's just kind of peeling now to combat that i've hit it with some wd-40 and some other elements so is it a reason not to get the mill no is it aggravating to have to deal with yes i opted for the upgrade i went with the kohler command pro 9.5 now standard purchase price i believe it's a seven horsepower motor in my experience nobody has ever said i wish i have less power this nine and a half runs through the pine and walks through the hardwoods take your time don't overwork the mill and get plenty of lumber out of it one thing i have to say is you stand back here at the control station this water container is just too small i find i have to refill it nearly every log i think it might not even be a full gallon now the rate of water i use and those kind of things may play a factor but i think it would not have been hard to have that increase by maybe 25 or 50 percent let me get a little more milling time blown plastic is cheap and it could make a big difference the other thing is we're back here on the mill this handle folks it's a two post mill and when you're pushing a two post mill what tends to happen is i tend to reach to the middle bar to keep the push through steady and even or even sometimes here on the get top of the gas tank as a result my grip goes inverted to keep the throttle and clutch engaged they're on the same cords as i'm doing it it puts my shoulder at a weird angle now originally would miser designed this to be a top grip on the outside and your left hand to ride on the inside but i just haven't been able to find a nice even push rate that i like with that it's a small thing but if you mill for a couple hours in a row you'll find your shoulder gets a little sore now if you are an amateur beginner never done it before which i suspect like me a lot of you are who are watching this video and thinking about this purchase i'm gonna tell you the first two serious beams you mill should be made into log ramps this has been a great great addition okay for my productivity to be able to stage things like a chef on a counter and have all my materials close by very very valuable all right the second part i would say is whether you want to call it a cant hook or a pv or any other type of name get yourself one of these units here incredible value yeah they go a hundred hundred and a half to get just a standard unit but maybe you can find one in the flea market in your area a little cheaper it's worth it it's worth it all day long you find yourself in the ground trying to dig out logs it's just not worth it with this little i think it's about a four or four and a half foot stick i've been able to move some of them big oaks and maples running eight nine ten feet and all the 20 or 22 inches which by the way is the exact maximum i would expect out of this wood miser lx 25 it's going to eat the pine like i said before it's going to walk through the hardwoods now i know on the spec sheet what it says it'll do don't kid yourself and don't be daydreaming about those specs okay it comes close they're not lying but every log has just a little curve or a little bend or a little loop or divot or warp or whatever you want to call it as a result unless you're milling number two pencils that are perfectly straight you're not likely to hit those max numbers now there's a couple things you can do to help okay this little log dog here right here this is a nice unit works well it does a couple of tasks well this little hook is when you're on that bottom board it can grab a square board or can't it has a point so it bites into the bark and the sapwood and you can get pretty good torque and leverage on it with this little six inch bar however this is not attached in any way and it's not supposed to be it falls off all the time and it needs to rotate it gets lost in the sawdust pile it's a little bit of a pain in the butt but i don't have a better idea either so it is what it is with that however if you get maxed out to the edge of this mill okay you can take this off and just use to threaded bolt part to push in the log and buy this guide system pulls out okay to run your blade guide through now my experience with that is the logs you're milling on this size mill are all 16 to 20 inches so you tend to set it and forget it gets a little jammed up in the corners right by that built in the usa sticker the sawdust will jam in there it's tough to move it all the way maximum out so you typically if you're going for a max cut make sure that's cleaned out to pull it out now speaking of sawdust that brings me to my second and probably most frustrating task after what i think is cheap paint wood miser would probably argue different and that is this thing clogs with sawdust all the time now i'm sure you're watching this video going joe got a lot of sawdust around and it's true i do it's everywhere okay but i think maybe those engineers would miser scale down that whole mill when they scaled it down they gave a pretty small okay sawdust exhaust if you will and on the inside of that there's a little grate and it clogs constantly and so you're cleaning it quite often in fact in just two cuts on a pine or soft wood of some kind fur you're probably cleaning it halfway through the log otherwise it's going to jam up and you're going to run into the problem i have been while i'm milling these couple of pine it gets caught up in the guides and all on the interior of this fine machine now listen that's not a reason not to buy it i'm just saying be prepared for it maybe you make a modification i think i'm going to open that exhaust up it just bolts on with a couple of bolts i think i'm going to come in and modify that somewhat in order to get myself a little better better offshoot because collecting all this boy that's a chore so let's talk about some of the chores around being an amateur sawyer or a beginning sawyer you have to have a plan with what to do with all these off cuts this is my plan okay i take all those half moon camel back slab wood waste wood what have you it goes in my buck saw stand and i chainsaw it up you might be thinking that's pretty good and i used to take my axe and split it myself problem is a lot of these are super thin they tend to just kind of fall over when you stand them up that could be frustrating so i would recommend getting a kindling maker they're anywhere from 50 to 100 little two pound hammer i found that to be a lot more effective that's what i do with my hardwoods my soft woods half moons they go over here in a wastewood pile and i have an area where i load up the tractor and go dump them over the cliff it works for now but i'm gonna have to come up with a better plan get a lot of off cuts and rough cuts now my method i cut the waste wood my next cut is a one inch piece of slab board if it's softer woods they get made into the stickers it's hardwoods i'll save them for friends neighbors who want to make birdhouses and that kind of thing i got a pretty good spring pile going like i said i've had this mill about one year and i've run no less than 100 logs through it really happy with the product um it's kind of like the boats though once you get one you always want a bigger one now i don't need a bigger one but that might not stop me from getting the next bigger one all right i hope you've uh found this video enjoyable um i'm gonna be putting a couple videos out all right i'm gonna make a video just of me millin this 18 inch pine on alux 25 i feel like that's pretty standard use okay a lot of guys contemplating this probably have those logs available all right but uh before i let you go i do want to show you some finished product by the way you don't have to have a tractor but i strongly recommend you get one that was my ls mt 225 purchase last year i suspect i'll do a review on that shortly but here are some two by eights i milled okay some future coffee table candidates some four by fours all right some other two buys and over here i threw some thorn bushes i pulled out but you could see anywhere from 8 to 12 all the way out to 15 foot pine cants ranging anywhere okay from you know 10 by 12 to 8 by eights and so forth those are gonna get re-milled once i decide the best candidates and we're gonna build a sawyer shed for the wood mizer lx 25 there's a lot more to talk about i hope to make future videos if you like this video feel free to like subscribe the channel spirit of 76 and i hope to talk again with you folks real soon enjoy your day once again folks i hope you enjoyed today's video um if you're like me i wondered how this little kindling maker worked and so i've included it as a little bonus here at the end this is mostly black locust i'm splitting that i did for a customer the milling job i've had a lot of fun with the wood mizer lx25 i think it's great mill like i said i've run about 100 logs and got no plans of stopping anytime soon hope to do future videos of building a sawyer shed the ls tractor review mill and pine oak and maple and maybe some projects i've done with them so feel free to subscribe to the channel it's free and it sure does help me out and uh just a fellow up here in northeast connecticut having fun um adventures with tractors sawmills nature dadding and uh appreciate you folks tuning in uh really enjoyed this process and hoping to have more content and reach out through youtube in the future have a great day folks
