this winter don't forget that you can grow nutrient-dense sprouts in your very own kitchen hi everybody thanks so much for stopping by the homestead my name is sarah from living traditions homestead and today we are going to talk about growing your own sprouts over the winter or really all year for that matter right in your own kitchen now before I get started I want to welcome anybody who's new to our channel as if if this is the very first video of ours that you're watching welcome and for all you faithful followers thanks for coming back a couple days ago Kevin did an awesome video do-it-yourself low-cost way to make your own sprouting lives now we have sprouted over the last year's and you know sprouting lives if you get them on Amazon are actually pretty expensive but he has developed a way to make them for like under 50 cents I think he said in his video like 35 cents and that's awesome so today in my video I'm gonna be using his frauding lids to show you how to sprout all winter long now over the summer a lot of us spend a lot of time growing all this wonderful lettuce and salad mix and kale and all these kinds of greens you know for the most part that kind of stops especially during the winter there are ways that you can extend that growing season for you know kale and those kinds of winter hardy greens by using hoop houses or little greenhouses those kinds of things but in the situation where that is not an opportunity for you all hope is not lost if you sprout your own seeds we're going to be doing mung beans today you can do alfalfa seeds broccoli seeds are like a nutrient dense powerhouse you can get a lot of those nutrients that you receive in the summer when you're growing your own veggies and and stuff like that so it's important for you to continue getting these nutrients over the winter and you don't have to buy them from the grocery store so today we're just gonna get started this is really a multi-day video and a multi-day process but it's not hard don't get discouraged okay so really we just need a mason jar and a sprouting lid now you can make one like Kevin did or you can just buy them on Amazon or whatever but it it's a lid that has a screen in it and that's important that screen part okay we're gonna choose whatever kind of seeds that you want to sprout now let me say that it is important for you to get better either specifically for sprouting or at least those that are for immediate consumption you don't want to use like broccoli seeds that you just get from the nursery for planting and the reason is this the seeds are specifically designed for sprouting are going to be sterilized they're not going to have bacteria and at least those that are available for consumption like to use in your soups and those kinds of things they have specific standards that they have to go by that will make them safe to consume but those that are that are produced to put in your garden you know they might have remnants of you know either artificial fertilizer or organic fertilizers manure and that kind of thing and you don't want that kind of bacteria to be breeding inside your jar and then consuming it you can get really sick so that is my warning for today okay so I'm gonna start out like I said using mung beans and when you're sprouting you really don't need that many seeds I would say 2 to 4 tablespoons of seeds and today I'm going to be using 2 2 tablespoons so this is pretty easy right 1 tablespoon 2 tablespoons now we're going to add some water I suggest using some filtered water just something that doesn't have chlorine in at no city tap water that kind of thing we have amazing well water and so that's what I'm going to use so just pour some in there a little bit and we're just going to swish it around if there's any dust or debris or anything that's in there basically we are just kind of rinsing that away I'm gonna put my sprouting lid on it and then I'm gonna take it to this thing and just dump all that water out and the next step for day 1 is to add 1 cup of water we're going to tick off the sprouting lid so that the water doesn't splash everywhere and add 1 cup of water and this is going to give those feeds an opportunity to soften that outer layer that hull is going to soften by soaking in this water now you will let these seeds soak in this water for 8 hours or overnight before you do anything else so we are just going to put these in in a location that is out of the way and come back either tomorrow morning or in 8 hours whichever one comes first and is convenient ok well then this jar of mung beans have been soaking in this water overnight and now comes the routine where we're going to be rinsing and waiting rinsing and waiting rinsing and waiting we're gonna do that twice a day for anywhere from 3 to 5 days until these sprouts have basically filled this whole jar so like I said we are going to dump these out and rinse them so dump it out and then we are gonna rinse these with water put this cap back on here we're gonna rinse this while we've rinsed it we're gonna dump that all of this water okay we're gonna let it drip a little bit until all of the water is out and then we need to ensure that this jar stays at an angle and it's okay for some of the beams to be resting on the side of this this match here but there needs to be enough of the mash you can see that you can see the beans down here and but there needs to be enough of this mesh open to allow airflow inside of there okay so this is gonna remain damp in here we poured out as much water as we could so that it's not you know totally super wet but we need to allow this to stay at an angle put away for about 12 hours so twice a day we're gonna do this we're going to rinse them and dump them out and then lay them in a way that this can stay at this angle now my solution to that it's just a bowl okay so this metal bowl I will just set this in here and it allows it to be at the perfect angle okay see how that rests and so it allows it to stay like this there's still air flow inside of there so will stay moist in there but not too wet okay and so every 12 hours we're gonna do this we're going to rinse dump and put in this bowl at this angle and put it away now bean sprouts need to be done in complete darkness other sprouts do not but bean sprouts can get bitter tasting if they're grown out in the sunlight so I have a cupboard then I'm gonna put these away and so that they can start sprouting in here without any sunlight the only time we'll take them instruments and then coming back if you have like broccoli sprouts or alfalfa sprouts or whatever it is that you're sprouting bales can be done just out on your counter but not these guys these need to be put away in the cupboard so that's what I'm gonna do and now I will come back tomorrow after I've rinsed them and let them rest twice and then we'll see what they look like we'll see if there's any activity so it's been 24 hours since I started this process since thieves have been upside down in their bowl and getting ready to sprout and I just wanted to check in with you so that you can see after one day and our environment here in the house how quickly these have sprouted and how fantastic they are doing so you can see they're already starting to get little tails and they're doing a really great job so I've rinsed them for the first time today so I'm gonna put them back up in the cupboard and like I said yesterday we're gonna be doing this a total of twice per day well it has been five days and don't they look fantastic they filled up this entire jar two tablespoons of bean seeds and it filled up this entire jar of mung beans is what I used so they're done and now it's time for us to eat them I have plans to make some egg salad for egg salad sandwiches and put these on top instead of lettuce and they're gonna be fantastic look how beautiful there get this little seed thing out there you can eat those I just weird look at how fantastic they're well they're so good I'm so excited to eat these they're gonna be so good on a sandwich now that these are done they need to be stored in the refrigerator you can either store them in this jar with the regular lid on top or you can take them out and put them in like a paper towel in a ziplock bag you need to eat these so quickly they need to be eaten within two or three days there's a chance that they will mold in your refrigerator or grow bacteria even though it is pretty cool in your refrigerator so eat these quickly before they go bad you guys these are so nutritious you need to try these try other sprouting seeds as well make sure you get the ones that are just for sprouting so that they don't have any bacteria and stuff on them so be safe okay I encourage you to be brave and try these it's winter you can't really grow lettuce and stuff for yourself and most people aren't growing kale or greens outside in a greenhouse try these they're nutritious and a great alternative for lettuce and stuff on your sandwiches so you guys I'm so excited that you stopped by to watch my video on this thanks so
